Who I am
Hello! I'm jvvg (he/him or they/them). I'm a professional web developer based out of Chicago. I used Scratch a lot when I was younger. Keep reading to see more about me.
What I do on the Wiki
My main job on the Wiki these days is maintaining software. That means that I...
- Make sure that the MediaWiki software is running smoothly and often am involved in various technical maintenance tasks
- Help install and develop some of the extensions we use, including...
- The account request system (lead developer)
- The Scratch Login page (co-lead developer with kenny2scratch)
- Rate limiter (lead developer)
- The current iteration of ScratchSig (co-lead developer with Naleksuh)
- Operate WikiMonitor
I also am a bureaucrat, so that means I...
- First and foremost, be a helpful Wiki community member and help to improve the Wiki articles
- Handle account requests
- Perform administrative actions that may need to be done
Also, I have written a collection of essays about Scratch and the Wiki in response to various things I've seen. They're worth a read if you want some insight into my thoughts on all this.
What I do off the Wiki
I'm a web developer, so I spend a good amount of time on my work. I am a full-stack engineer, and basically if it involves technology and web, I probably do it. I have done everything from relational database design to backend development to frontend development to managing DevOps and build pipelines. Platforms and technologies I work with include C# with ASP.NET, JS (including React and server-side JS), Microsoft SQL, Optimizely Content/Commerce Cloud, BigCommerce, and Shopify.
I also program some outside of work, though these days it's mostly just stuff for the Wiki.
In addition to that, I am a very big railroad enthusiast, especially about urban rapid transit. I volunteer at a railroad museum as a train operator and conductor, and I maintain an ever-growing collection of photos I have taken of railroads (and other things I find interesting) on my Flickr page.
Other fun stuff about me
- There's no special pronunciation for my username, just say the four letters as letters
- I speak English and Spanish, though I don't know much programming vocabulary in Spanish
- I absolutely love Chicago
- I have a gray tabby cat (one of these days I'll get around to updating my user avatar, which currently features my parents' cat)
- I like to bake
- I have perfect pitch
- I really, really like chocolate
