Scratch can import WAV files and some MP3s. Other sound formats cannot be imported directly, but can be converted.[1]

Converting sound files

You can use an external audio editor (such as Audacity, which is open source and safe to use) to convert many sound file formats to the correct formats. One can also use iTunes to convert a sound to .mp3 format. If you don't want to use software, then Online Audio Converter can be used to convert files online.
