Good Idea

Clearly on April Fools, we will still want real pages available for people who want real info. However, what we should do, and I think mrsrec had a similar idea, make a template that if the date is April 1, then at the top of the page, provide a link to the funny version, which will be a parameter in the template. Like it?
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 02:27, 22 January 2014 (UTC)

Hmm. You should ask this on the CP because frankly I wasn't sure what to do with all these pages. :P
Mathfreak231 (talk | contribs) 14:35, 22 January 2014 (UTC)

Heaps of praise!

This is beautiful.

Just sayin'
Scratchisthebest (talk | contribs) 01:47, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

My personal favorite so far is Suggestions (forum).
Mathfreak231 (talk | contribs) 01:54, 28 January 2014 (UTC)
The Suggestions forum article sounds like the real Suggestions forum. xD
derpmeup (talk | contribs) 15:25, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
Well, that's what's funny about it. It's writing from the heart. :)
Mathfreak231 (talk | contribs) 20:26, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
Yep! :P

We Really Got to Plan this Out and Get it Started

We really have to get this going, because April Fools is in 13 days already. Are we going to use this template I proposed? Also, we need to discuss:

  • are the fake pages going to replace the main ones on April Fools?
  • are the fake pages going to simple provide a link to the real one? Or will the real articles provide links to the fake ones?
    Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 22:36, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

My thoughts are this:

  • if a page has a joke version, then there should be a link at the top of the real article linking to the joke version using the Fools template I proposed in 2000 B.C.
    Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 22:37, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
Also, it just came to me, we're going to need to move the prank pages over to UnScratchWiki/name instead of a subpage of Mathfreak's user page. I will also design a new TOC for the UnScratchWiki while we're at it. And we could use some more pages.
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 00:43, 19 March 2014 (UTC)
I was thinking have the prank pages be the default. Otherwise, what's the real point?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 09:03, 19 March 2014 (UTC)
True. But that brings up another issue. Will the normal pages still be available to read, or will we just revert back to them when April Fools is over? Also, how do you like this idea: At the top of each page, it has a link to the actual page in the history?
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 23:02, 19 March 2014 (UTC)
See User:Scimonster/Sandbox2 (Spam example) and User:Scimonster/Sandbox3 (template) :D
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 09:10, 20 March 2014 (UTC)
Anyone? Also, for the contents, we might as well list the joke pages, so that people can easily find and appreciate them.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 08:30, 23 March 2014 (UTC)
Good idea. So let me type this all down
1) The normal pages will simply be overwritten on April Fools Day. If people want to read them, they can read the page history. The templates Scimonster showed above should mention that.
2) We need to decide when April Fools starts and ends due to different time zones
3) The contents on the UnScratchWiki home page will list all the pages, and I plan to make a lot this coming week, so can someone modify the contents section to scroll?
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 12:45, 23 March 2014 (UTC)
Did you see the way the page would actually look? The magic is that it shows the joke page, and lets you uncollapse the actual page — all without modifying the page's contents.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 13:59, 23 March 2014 (UTC)
Awesome sauce!!!!!!!!!!! How do you do it? I couldn't exactly find the template in the page source that changes it. Anyways, could you make it so once it becomes April Fools the joke page will then appear?
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 14:32, 23 March 2014 (UTC)

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────Do you think we could make a more formal template like this:

{{April Fools|sourceOfJokePage}}

And what it would do is if it is April Fools, then it will collapse the real page and show the joke page?
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 14:35, 23 March 2014 (UTC)

The template is here, and the code is actually pretty straightforward.
First there's an April Fools' warning header. That's plain and simple {{Header Template}}.
Next we transclude the joke page. It would be {{{{{1}}}}} in the actual template.
Finally, we collapse the rest of the page by using {{collapse top}}. We don't need {{collapse bottom}} here, because the HTML is automatically closed at the end of the page.
Remember, this is all at the very top of the page. For things like {{stub}}, it might be better to also modify the original template for April Fools', because the collapsed element won't be automatically closed. It's simple to then use code from the original {{fools}} to only have this display on April Fools'.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 15:19, 23 March 2014 (UTC)
Guys, we should really just wait until next year because of my inactivity. Just saying.
Mathfreak231 (talk | contribs) 20:19, 27 March 2014 (UTC)
You're joking, right?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 20:40, 27 March 2014 (UTC)
I think it's a pre-April Fools joke. :P
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 21:49, 27 March 2014 (UTC)
No, I'm fairly serious. We have, like, 21 pages of 800+. And April Fools' is in, like, 3 days. You can go ahead with this if you want, but keep it until next year as well so we can get more parodies done. If I were to say the most important category of pages, do the forum sections.
Mathfreak231 (talk | contribs) 21:02, 28 March 2014 (UTC)
We were never planning on making parodies of all 800+ pages. That would be a waste of time and server space. On April Fools, the Scratch home page will be replaced with the joke one, and that joke page has a table of contents linking to all the joke pages. They will be fairly easy for users to find, and honestly, the pages we have made so far are among the most popular pages of all. Plus the intensity (?) is coming and I'm too excited to wait one more year!!!
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 21:26, 28 March 2014 (UTC)

Articles That Need Made

The most popular pages of Special:PopularPages could use joke articles.
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 01:02, 26 March 2014 (UTC)

I changed the linking guidelines. Anyone want to update the pages now to conform to the new guidelines?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 08:27, 26 March 2014 (UTC)

What linking guidelines?
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 23:54, 26 March 2014 (UTC)
NVM I got it.
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 00:18, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

Actually moving the pages

How do we plan on actually moving the pages when the time comes? Should I write a bot task to do it or will somebody just move them manually? Also, what do we do with the original pages?
jvvg (talk | contribs) 01:29, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

Do we need to move them?
We can also move this page, User:Mathfreak231/UnScratchWiki, and automatically move all the subpages and talk pages with it.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 05:26, 27 March 2014 (UTC)
What about the templates? Should I copy those tonight?
jvvg (talk | contribs) 18:55, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
I did those now.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 19:16, 31 March 2014 (UTC)

8 Articles We Should Push to Create

We need to create the following articles in joke form:

  • Sprites
  • Role-Playing Game
  • Backpack
  • Scratch 2.0
  • Curator
  • Variables
  • Scratch Wiki (How could we forget the most popular page on the Wiki- the page on the Wiki?)
  • Alternatives to Scratch

Those are among the very most popular articles. We should be good then. April Fools is Tuesday! Let's push and get these finished!
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 15:04, 30 March 2014 (UTC)

I might make a joke page for the curator article. ;)
derpmeup (talk | contribs) 05:01, 5 June 2014 (UTC)

Extending the time for about 4-5 hours

Many people are in different time zones, so we might want to have the joke pages up about 4-5 hours after the UTC time of April 2. This would require a little change to the template code. Agree?
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 22:35, 31 March 2014 (UTC)

All working!

I had to purge the cache a bit to get some pages working, but they're all good now. Once this is over, we'll need to clear the cache again. Here's how: http://wiki.scratch.mit.edu/w/index.php?action=purge&title=TITLE_OF_PAGE_(suffix_if_applicable). We'll need to do that for every page affected, sadly.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 00:24, 1 April 2014 (UTC)

Wait, I thought we just have to remove the template from the pages when done?
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 01:17, 1 April 2014 (UTC)
True. That does it too. :P
jvvg (talk | contribs) 01:51, 1 April 2014 (UTC)

Houston We Have a Small Problem

The table of contents for the real article still displays. Couldn't we also hide the contents somehow?
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 01:34, 1 April 2014 (UTC)

It's not a big enough deal IMO. Other than that, it looks great.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 01:51, 1 April 2014 (UTC)
No. Not without removing the TOC entirely. :(
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 04:20, 1 April 2014 (UTC)

Keeping these pages

Please don't delete these pages after AF day is over, as we put a lot of effort into them and I will probably want to read them again later. Also, some parts of the AF suggestions forum page are actually more accurate than the original article.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 01:53, 1 April 2014 (UTC)

Hey! Can I help make some UnScratchWiki articles? Thanks! :D
derpmeup (talk | contribs) 17:12, 15 May 2014 (UTC)

Of course! Just like a certain OTHER Scratch Wiki, we always welcome new editors. :)
Mathfreak231 (talk | contribs) 20:12, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks! I made an article on Questions about Scratch. :)
derpmeup (talk | contribs) 15:22, 16 May 2014 (UTC)

April Fools 2015

Are we going to use these pages for April Fools 2015?
derpmeup (talk | contribs) 16:10, 18 May 2014 (UTC)

probs. we need to make more tho
Mathfreak231 (talk | contribs) 00:56, 20 May 2014 (UTC)
Shouldn't we figure out something new to do next year?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 06:00, 20 May 2014 (UTC)
*falls* oh that's so far away!
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 22:40, 20 May 2014 (UTC)
We wouldn't do it yet. :P (I added your nowiki tag btw.)
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 04:18, 21 May 2014 (UTC)
@Scimonster: Well, I think having a joke article on some of the Scratch Wiki articles is a good thing to do for April Fools. :)
