New Wikian Tips!


Cool tips on how to edit
  1. To edit, click the pencil icon at the top of the page next to your username. Then, click edit. If you don't see the button it may be because the page is protected for certain users.
  2. After you are in the editor, check out the cheatsheet for editing tips.
  3. You can also check out the help pages for more detailed information on editing.
  4. You can test editing features out in the community sandbox (it will get cleared every few hours), or you can make your own sandbox here.
  5. Before making a page, make sure it does not already exist. You can do this by using the search bar located at the top of the page.
  6. If the page you wanted to make is already created, you can create a redirect page! For more info on redirect pages, see this.
  7. To make a page, go here, or type the page name you want in the search bar and then press the link that says "create this page by editing this!"
  8. For information on magic words, check out the MediaWiki Documentatation.


Cool tips for finding pages to edit
  1. Use random page
  2. Check out articles to expand
  3. Check out article stubs
  4. Look at edits on recent changes and see what you can do to improve it even more.


Cool tips for posting on talk pages
  1. To post on someone's talk page, simply press the pencil icon and then press "New Topic". Type in the subject and message.
  2. Then, make sure you sign your post with 4 tidles (~~~~)
  3. When replying to a talk page post, edit the section that has the message and then indent your post with a colon (:). If someone already replied, use one more colon then they used. (See example conversation below)

Check this to see when new user accounts are created instead of going round randomly. Also please remember to indent your posts using one more colon than the previous person, in this case you should type ::: before your post. You can see that your post is on the edge while mine is correctly indented.

You don't need to start a new line for your siggy. Just place it immediately after your post. In this case you haven't so it has caused a formatting issue. Just place ~~~~ immediately without any spaces or new lines.

Hi there, it's great that you're eager to welcome people to the wiki! I just wanted to let you know of the following points:

  • Please only welcome users who have joined recently (I'd say within the past week, but others might say something different). You can find new users at Special:Log/newusers.
  • Please always add new talk page messages, welcomes included, at the bottom of the page. You can add a new message to the bottom of the page by clicking the pencil icon, then "New topic" (assuming you're using the default Scratch Wiki interface, or "skin").
  • Please always add headings before your posts. If you're using the aforementioned "New topic" button, a heading will automatically be added to your post from whatever you put in the subject line.
  • Please always sign your posts with ~~~~.
  • If there are already five personal welcomes on a given talk page, please do not add any more as per S:USERSPACE#User talk pages. I removed some of your welcomes because of this rule.

Please note that you're not in trouble, I just want to help you understand how to most effectively welcome new users. If you have any questions about this, please feel free to ask on my talk page or the Community Portal. Thank you for reading and understanding! :)
