For the scratch team :)

I do not know if you have seen this already but you should if you haven't seen it already. To go to the project click here.
Jandrewg (talk | contribs) 12:14, 6 April 2014 (UTC)

That's neat. However, I should point out that I'm not on the Scratch Team. I am just an "Experienced Wikian", which gives me a few extra privileges on the Wiki.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 12:58, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
Oh.
Jandrewg (talk | contribs) 14:00, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
To learn more about who's on the Scratch Team, you can read the Wiki article. ;)

Archives

How do you archive? Why do you want to?
Jandrewg (talk | contribs) 12:16, 6 April 2014 (UTC)

I archive my talk page by moving all of the discussions to User talk:Jvvg/Archive X (X being the archive number, so the first archive is number 1), then I ask an admin to protect it. I do this to keep my talk page from getting too big.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 12:57, 6 April 2014 (UTC)

Is your bot down?

Hmm, your bot seems like it is not telling users about categorizing new files being uploaded :)
Anamation2.gif KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 02:09, 8 April 2014 (UTC)

Apparently a series of requests failed, so it crashed. I restarted it.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 11:46, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
What's with all of the links? (And why link to Special:Upload instead of Help:Images?)
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 12:32, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
Ok great! (Ps I am practicing linking so it will get easier for me to link key words in articles faster!) ;)
Anamation2.gif KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 14:54, 9 April 2014 (UTC)

Does your confirm account system detect alt accounts?

I mean, someone could create 5 accounts and make them sign up for the wiki any then they would have 4 alt accounts :)
Anamation2.gif KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 04:08, 10 April 2014 (UTC)

No, but I can usually tell. I can also ask a bureaucrat to ban any extra alt accounts if I do create one by accident.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 11:47, 10 April 2014 (UTC)
How? Do you have IP address records which can record alt accounts? And PS, I think there is no real way to prevent alt accounts because there might be two people!e using the same computer ;(
Anamation2.gif KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 19:33, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
I don't use IP records at all. Usually a user actually tells me if it's an alt account (saying something like "Accept me! I'm XXX's alt account!"). Occasionally one gets through, but I can catch the obvious ones. It's also good just to have the policy written.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 19:39, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
Yeah. That is true :)
Anamation2.gif KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 19:45, 15 May 2014 (UTC)

Bot linking to categories

In this WikiMonitor notification, the bot left a message on not categorizing a category. However, it linked directly to the category, essentially categorizing it. (After the category was deleted, i took down the link.) I noticed that you already special-cased the File: namespace; adding Category: shouldn't be too difficult, right?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 17:59, 10 April 2014 (UTC)

Oops, I didn't. This is awkward... Anyway, patch time.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 00:42, 11 April 2014 (UTC)
Should be fixed now. :)
jvvg (talk | contribs) 00:46, 11 April 2014 (UTC)

Please categorize new pages

It appears that when making the page Category:PLEASE IGNORE ME, you did not include any categories. Please remember to categorize all new pages and files. Check out Help:Categories for details. Thanks!
Please note that this message was sent by a bot. Please do not remove it or reply to it. If this message was sent incorrectly, please notify my owner, jvvg on his talk page.
WikiMonitor (talk | contribs) 14:11, 13 April 2014 (UTC)

question

How do you create category pages without it showing in the recent changes? I couldn't find your deleted category with the N next to the edit!
Anamation2.gif KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 16:18, 13 April 2014 (UTC)

I think it didn't show up because it was deleted.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 17:15, 13 April 2014 (UTC)
oh thanks!
Anamation2.gif KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 17:45, 13 April 2014 (UTC)

JVVG, how do you create contents? Someone deleted this question for some reason, which I don't like.
SuperSmashScratch (talk | contribs) 19:07, 11 May 2014 (UTC)

I didn't delete the question. I simply moved it to the bottom
jvvg (talk | contribs) 19:25, 11 May 2014 (UTC)

Mod Share

In Mod Share, could you add the Scratch Mod Explore to the list of Mods?
Jandrewg (talk | contribs) 14:05, 18 April 2014 (UTC)

Oh and could you add the file extension .ep (which is the explore file extension, e=explore and p=project so the extension is really .exploreproject)?
Jandrewg (talk | contribs) 14:49, 18 April 2014 (UTC)
As stated here, we are no longer accepting new mods.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 20:30, 19 April 2014 (UTC)

WikiMonitor Failed to Recognize Category

On How to Make a Tower Defense Game, I had the Template:In Progress which automatically adds a category to the page. However, WikiMonitor seemed to still notify me about categorizing.
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 18:45, 21 April 2014 (UTC)

Oh yeah, KrIsMa gave me a list of templates with categories, but I forgot to add that to the bot. I need to remember to add that soon.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 18:48, 21 April 2014 (UTC)
Where is that list? I can't find it in your TP archives.
I disagree with the decision to whitelist some of these categories. A page with {{In Progress}} or {{stub}} on it should always have another category in any case. Therefore, the creator should be notified. {{disambig}} doesn't need another one though.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 07:47, 22 April 2014 (UTC)
KrIsMa gave me the list at User:VoxBot/UBBF#4. I will make WM only accept ones that actually have categories related to the content of the article, though.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 11:46, 22 April 2014 (UTC)
So it looks like the only acceptable ones are Template:Disambig, Template:Data Blocks, and Template:ListTOC.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 11:59, 22 April 2014 (UTC)
Later, I'll code those in.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 12:52, 22 April 2014 (UTC)

WM recategorizing on move

I'm suggesting this for WM because it involves watching recent changes. When a category gets moved, it would be nice if WM could automatically update all pages/files/categories categorized under it. What do you think?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 18:53, 22 April 2014 (UTC)

That seems more like a VoxBot kind of thing. However, I could try implementing that.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 18:55, 22 April 2014 (UTC)
Does it? I thought VoxBot was for general cleanup tasks, not patrolling recent changes.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 18:59, 22 April 2014 (UTC)
It is, but this is more of a cleanup task IMO.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 19:00, 22 April 2014 (UTC)
I have implemented the category template detection. For the current list, see User:WikiMonitor/Configuration/CategoryTemplates. I am also writing WikiMonitor B, a bot that will take care of tasks like recategorizing pages. To schedule a task, add it to the service queue.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 22:37, 22 April 2014 (UTC)
The recategorize feature is now complete! Please use it if necessary.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 00:35, 23 April 2014 (UTC)
Clearly there is dilemma present! If recategorizing pages were given to me, it wouldn't be automatic (my bot is semi-automatic) but it would categorize moved pages efficiently. On the other hand, Jvvg thinks that it is a cleanup job and it should be given to VoxBot :) although my bot does some mass editing, i think WM should have this task :)
Anamation2.gif KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 02:14, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Thanks jvvg. There was some category i wanted to move, but now i forgot which. :P

SS_Firedust.EXE

I have downloaded Firedust from http://futuresight.org/ and I have opened it and logged on to the admin account, and I click settings and then I click FireDocs I fill in the username box with: Admin and I fill in the password: AdminAccount and it says: The user already exists (incorrect password) or the server is down. Could you help? (Is this the right place to ask?) I have Windows 7
Jandrewg (talk | contribs) 18:26, 27 April 2014 (UTC)

You should probably ask on our forums instead, as I did not develop FireDust. It's also not under active development anymore, so I don't think the problem will be fixed.

Recent Account Acception

Thank you for accepting my account request.

However, you created my user page and talk page for me, which I was hoping to do myself.

I also find it an invasion of privacy because it's against the Wiki community guidelines.

I am not meaning to offend you in any way. However, I am request that you delete both my user and talk page.
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 20:50, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

We create the user page to help the new user because some new users don't know how :) it is only a breach when a user edits your user page afterwards. We can delete the page for you, though! Thanks for raising the issue, though!
Anamation2.gif KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 20:55, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
The software automatically creates the page. It's not really a breach of Wiki guidelines because it's a lot easier to keep of track of things (and avoid red links in signatures) when a page exists for every user, and I'm not actually putting any content on it. I also won't delete your user talk page because we don't do that. We never delete user talk pages because we need an archive of all of the messages a user has received.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 21:51, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
Weird, someones talk page got deleted and it was allowed :O anyways im not an admin/experiened_wikians like jvvg -oops :)
Anamation2.gif KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 23:43, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
I don't ever recall a user talk page being deleted (it's ok to delete regular talk pages if the article is also deleted). It is ok to delete user pages if necessary, though.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 01:00, 29 April 2014 (UTC)
my mistake, a user page got deleted :)

Should I learn PHP?

I think you said PHP is your best language once. Should I learn it? What are its uses?
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 14:10, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

Nah, PHP sucks! It has over 700 built-in functions, most of which you'll never need and are confusing. But it's very commonly used to write webservers, so you might as well get a basic understanding of it. I personally prefer using Node for servers now, because i know and like JavaScript better than PHP.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 14:37, 30 April 2014 (UTC)
Scimonster is exaggerating a lot. It's actually pretty easy to use. Like all languages, it just takes some practice.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 17:12, 30 April 2014 (UTC)
Fine, i am. It doesn't suck, it's just not top-choice.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 18:09, 30 April 2014 (UTC)
It's a matter of opinion.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 18:18, 30 April 2014 (UTC)
As is every single discussion about picking a language, or programming practice. :P
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 18:37, 30 April 2014 (UTC)
Well, let's not get into a heated debate! :P The reason I was considering learning it was because I don't really know too much about servers and related things. I would like, in maybe a year, to have a good site running, but I need more knowledge. I know JavaScript and it is my favorite language (not to mention its similarities to Scratch) but I thought I could maybe learn PHP too. Either PHP or C# I am going to learn next.
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 21:15, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────Well, I decided to instead learn C#. Plus, I made good use of ordering a book with my last day of Amazon Prime free trial.
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 13:35, 1 May 2014 (UTC)

IMO you should never use a book to learn programming. I learn it by reading the language manuals and looking at examples.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 13:36, 1 May 2014 (UTC)
I find it difficult to find online resources that explain things well. They always jump to parts without explaining anything, and the comments said this book is simply incredible.

can't delete file pages

File:ScratchWikiUserCreatedSitesPic1.PNG page deletion did not work :( next time, try putting {{BrokenImage}} on the image instead :)
Anamation2.gif KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 00:54, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

Yes, I know that file deletion doesn't work. I am going to Boston in a few weeks, I really want to go to drop in on the server room and fix this one and for all. :P (After all, I do know how to get to MIT on the subway, it's Kendall/MIT on the red line, on the Alewife side of downtown). But more relevant to that, I was just trying to delete the page. I will add that template instead. I don't try to delete files much, so I forget that.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 00:59, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
Hh I get it :) Sorry for the confusion / annoyance :)
Anamation2.gif KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 01:07, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
I thought you once said that Amazon servers were used for the Wiki???
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 13:21, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
Now that you mention it, they are. I now need to break into MIT, steal one of their computers, and find the login info.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 13:38, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
Sorry, I am the Uploader of the file. I am really sorry about this, It looks like I can't delete it either. If I could, I would delete it. I Honestly thought that the topic of user created websites for scratchers would warrant a article.

Actually, nobody can delete files. It's due to a technical glitch.

Replying

I was wondering how to reply on a comment on the Talk page. How do you respond?

Hi! I'm not sure if this message came through to your talk page - because I didn't see it there. How do you reply to a comment on somebody's talk page?

EDIT: Never mind, it came through. I thought the newer messages were at the top. :P
Derpmeup (talk | contribs) 03:05, 10 May 2014 (UTC)

You reply by putting your message directly below the bottom message, and put one more colon before it than the message above. Look at some of the discussions on my talk page for examples.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 20:03, 10 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks! :D

WikiMonitor

When I was editing my page to add some more to it, I got a message from WikiMonitor saying to not edit 6 times in the past 30 minutes. But, i wasn't trying to spam, i was just adding a feature, clicking Save, then i thought of a new one and edited it again. Was i allowed to do that? Thanks! :)

Derpmeup (talk | contribs) 14:23, 10 May 2014 (UTC)

The reason WM gives those notifications is the fact that a lot of new users make repeated edits to a page, without knowing that it's discouraged. We strongly encourage the use of the preview button and planning edits before making them.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 20:03, 10 May 2014 (UTC)

WM NSes that don't need cats

WM just sent me two messages about not categorizing pages in the MediaWiki namespace. You should add which namespaces don't need categories to the config pages. All talks, User, MediaWiki.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 12:53, 11 May 2014 (UTC)

Currently, user and talk pages are already ignored. I will set it to ignore MW pages too. Thanks for letting me know.

Content

How do you make those contents things on the Wiki page?
SuperSmashScratch (talk | contribs) 13:46, 11 May 2014 (UTC)

What do you mean?
jvvg (talk | contribs) 14:09, 11 May 2014 (UTC)
The things where you can select which Level 2 headline you want to go to.
SuperSmashScratch (talk | contribs) 19:10, 11 May 2014 (UTC)
That's the table of contents, which should be automatically included.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 19:25, 11 May 2014 (UTC)
It's not on there automatically...
SuperSmashScratch (talk | contribs) 21:31, 11 May 2014 (UTC)
Which page are you talking about?
jvvg (talk | contribs) 21:33, 11 May 2014 (UTC)
They are only included after a certain threshold of headers are placed. :)
Anamation2.gif KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 21:40, 11 May 2014 (UTC)
That threshold is 4 btw. 4 headers cause a TOC. You can also use the __TOC__, __NOTOC__, and __FORCETOC__ magic words to mess with the contents.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 04:20, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

Creating pages

How do you create pages?
~Angelblade (talk | contribs) 12:32, 12 May 2014‎ (UTC)

bot

Let say I changed the sandbox and then cleared it, would wm also clear it?
Anamation2.gif KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 19:12, 15 May 2014 (UTC)

Yes, it would. However, the header should now reflect that WM changes it, so hopefully it won't be a big issue.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 19:19, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
PS you should change the content wm replaces the sandbox with because scimonster changed the header :)
Anamation2.gif KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 19:24, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
The header is stored as a template. ;) Also, tt now will only clear if the following condition is met:
trim(get_page_contents('Scratch Wiki:Sandbox')) != trim(DEFAULT_SANDBOX_TEXT)
jvvg (talk | contribs) 19:26, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
oh nice idea! Better than my way - if there is text below the comment, the clear the sandbox. Nice!
