WM's FPC updater script
It appears that nth curator is grammatically incorrect. Take the latest one. Two-hundred-ninety-sixth should not be that. It is incorrect. It should be two-hundred-and-ninety-sixth.- Oh yeah. I just noticed that. That should be fixed
asqwde talk | contribs 12:23, 17 March 2018 (UTC)- No, "two-hundred-ninety-sixth" is grammatically correct. However, I feel like it would be better to simply say

Confirmation Code
Hey jvvg, because you accepted my application letter I assume you know the answer to this. Why is my confirmation code not working? Also, how do you talk through a mouse
NYCDOT (talk | contribs)I AM THE ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 21:06, 16 March 2018 (UTC)
- Talking through the mouse is done with the HTML "title" attribute. So this:
<span title="talking through mouse">text</span>
- Makes this:
- text
- As for the confirmation code, why do you need one? You can't have more than one account on the Wiki.
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 10:43, 17 March 2018 (UTC)- I want the confirmation code to work so I can get email notifications for scratch. Where would you put the code for the talking through the mouse? wiki.
NYCDOT (talk | contribs)I AM THE ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 14:16, 17 March 2018 (UTC)- Oh, email notifications... But that doesn't need a confirmation code, you just need to click the link that gets sent to your email. Are you not getting the link? Check your spam folder if that's the case.

Archives
How do you add an archive to a talk page?
NYCDOT (talk | contribs) 19:49, 29 March 2018 (UTC)
- Hi! You can make a subpage of your talk page named "User talk:NYCDOT/Archive" or "NYCDOT/Archive 1" or something like that. Then, you can copy and paste the contents of your talk page into your new archive. After that, you can delete the messages in your talk page. Alternatively, you could use the move button.

How to create a message from the mouse
I've seen a large magority of users on the wiki that have a message talking out of your mouse-pointer. Could you help me make it? Thank you in advance! :)
PrincessFlowerTV (talk | contribs) 00:23, 11 April 2018 (UTC)
- You use the HTML "title" attribute (this question always comes up here every time he archives his talk lol). For example, this:
<span title="Hi">hOII</span>
- Makes this:
hOII
- The "title" attribute can go on most HTML elements, I think.

I got an incorrect notifacation from WikiMonitor. I did sign my post, even though WM says I did not.

Mrbumppo (talk | contribs) 13:01, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
- You actually did not sign your post. WM does not look at the contents of templates. Please sign your posts outside of the template.
- In case you're wondering why it doesn't look at the template contents, there are two major reasons:
- It would take extra processing time, and
- You could change the template later to not have your signature, and nobody would notice.
- Remember to sign your post on the top level next time. Thanks.

Deleted Images
You deleted my image Scratch-online-editor.png, thinking it was a duplicate of another image. Actually, that image was the offline editor, and this is for the online editor. CrazyBoy826 (Talk|Contribs)
- They both look the same to me. Both images have "Join Scratch/Sign In" at the top, while the offline editor does not, so it looks like the original image (the one I said yours is a duplicate off) was also from the online editor.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 22:20, 4 June 2018 (UTC)- It is not a duplicate because above the stage in my image, there is a texxt box, while the other one does not because it is offline.
CrazyBoy826 (talk | contribs)- There are no text boxes in your image that are not in the other image. The only text box I see in your image is the one for the project title, which is also present in the other one (File:Scratch Layout.png).

A mistake in the FPC list
Hello! Someone told me that there was a mistake in the list of FPCs. The mistake is that an FPC is listed twice. Since we're not supposed to edit some parts of that page (the parts that WikiMonitor edits), I didn't fix the mistake. However, could you please change it? I looked in the history of that page, and it doesn't seem that it's a glitch with WikiMonitor, so that's good.

Transit Systems
I see you are a fan of Transit Systems. So am I! I am in love, repeat, absolute love with the MTA (New York Metro Area). My favorite line is the 7 or the F or the E. What's yours?
NYCDOT [ Talk Page | Contributions | Directory ] 19:29, 24 June 2018 (UTC)
- I've only been to NYC a few times (you can see my pictures of the NYC subway here). My favorite line I rode while there was the A train, mostly because it has several long gaps between express stops, and sailing across Manhattan and Brooklyn on an express is really fun. I actually one time did the Subway Challenge, where I rode to and stopped at all 472 stations (it took me 29 hours). I really enjoyed riding BART in San Francisco (pictures), the Los Angeles Metro (pictures), the Cleveland RTA (pictures), and the Charlotte Lynx Blue Line (pictures).
jvvg (talk | contribs) 21:57, 24 June 2018 (UTC)- Nice! How is it possible to do the Subway Challenge? I would die if I had to do that! I don't like the A Train because of the amount of Homeless People that seem to get attracted to that line. I wish to ride on the BART and the LA Metro one day. Your photos are great too! Are you also a professional photographer?
NYCDOT [ Talk Page | Contributions | Directory ] 22:08, 24 June 2018 (UTC)- The way to do the subway challenge is to find a route that visits all 472 stations in the least amount of time possible (it must stop at each station at least once, not just pass through), and then actually get on the train and follow that route. I'm not a professional photographer, unfortunately. I'm just a college student who likes taking pictures and sometimes has too much free time.

Using templates for WM
Hi! I saw that every time WikiMonitor comments on a talk page, it re-creates the three messages over and over again. You could put the three messages as templates instead to save space and time. Can you change WM to just use user subpage templates?
CrazyBoy826 | Talk | 8,242 edits | Scratch 18:40, 8 August 2018 (UTC)
- The space savings would be minimal (a few hundred bytes per message), and I don't see how it would save time. However, this would also lead to having extra dependencies, where old messages would depend on current templates, and this would also mean that if I ever decide to change the message, then it will change for everyone who has ever received it.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 00:52, 9 August 2018 (UTC)- I mean new messages will use the template, old ones stay the same. By saving time I mean that more text uploaded will take a longer time to get through. If users want, they can change their bot messages to the template.
CrazyBoy826 | Talk | 8,242 edits | Scratch 01:57, 9 August 2018 (UTC)- Using templates would also mean that the messages would be cache-dependant, and directly posting them avoids that; besides, templates increase the link indexing that needs to be done, so in reality the space savings are near zero.

Questions about some edits
So I uploaded a new version of the header at File:ScratchHeader.PNG but it got all squished and I don't know how to fix it...
Also, do we need the citation needed tag at Navigation_Bar#Scratch_Wiki about the headers?
Jandrewg (talk | contribs) 21:29, 5 January 2019 (UTC)
- The header image looks fine to me. Your browser was probably just trying to display it in the size of the old image. Refreshing the page usually takes care of that. For the citation needed tag, that was probably put back before we had an authoritative source saying what the Scratch 3.0 header would be, so the header was basically us guessing that they would use that header for Scratch 3.0. Since it now is the header, I removed that tag since the Scratch website header can be considered common knowledge.

Hey, I noticed you place a welcome template on all new users' talk pages. I made one and I know how to paste it (it's Template:Welcome By EIephant Lover, but with two brackets on either end). Welcome Message
hi there, a while ago bigpuppy was trying to teach me how to set a welcome message to automatically go onto a new users talk page, he said something that i cannot remember, i tried what he said and it didnt work, would you mind telling me so i can get it to work?? many thanks,
JJBullet ( u • t • c )
- You can store your welcome message as a template in your userspace (for example, User:JJBullet/Welcome) and then whenever a new user joins, you can just comment
{{User:JJBullet/Welcome}}~~~~
to leave your message. However, it is not possible for you to make your message be included automatically on new users' talk pages without use of a bot (and we will not approve any such bots). You can see when new users join by looking at the user creation log though.

Hey There,
recently i have been thinking about elections,
and i was just wondering if you (the Bureaucrats and admins) can perform an election soon as i feel some wikians would benefit from an election
many thanks,
JJBullet ( u • t • c ) 13:51, 13 February 2019 (UTC)
- Elections are not held periodically, but rather when the existing admins feel that more administrative help is needed. For now, we are doing fine with the amount of help we have, so there won't be any elections for the immediate future.

Can you explain why I can't edit a lot on one page?
FrenchBread49 (talk | contribs) 03:29, 2 June 2019 (UTC)
- Editing the same page multiple times clogs up the recent changes, which has to show one entry per edit. Instead of editing many times, use the "show preview" button! It's right next to the "save changes" button and it shows you what your edit will look like before you save. Once you're happy with how the edit looks, then you can save changes.

Congyingzhou (talk | contribs) 05:06, 14 August 2019 (UTC)- As banana pointed out, you should use "Show Preview" to see how things look while you edit. When you save a page, it makes an entry in the page history as well as the recent changes log (which a bunch of people look at to monitor how things are going on the Wiki), and saving frequently creates a ton of entries, making it harder to keep track of what's going on. If you want to save your work while you're working, the best thing to do is save it somewhere else (like a Word doc or something).

About WikiMonitor
Hi. I just wanted to inform about WikiMonitor. WikiMonitor doesn't work as well in Scratch Wiki:Sandbox. I have no idea about why the bot doesn't clean the page. For your information.
ahmetlii Talk Contributions Directory 19:20, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
- WikiMonitor is a script that is running in the background, and when it sees an edit to the sandbox it will clear it four hours later. However, for various reasons the script stops running (like today, my Pi had to be unplugged to install an air conditioner) and doesn't resume until I manually restart it. In cases where I know it stopped, that's usually pretty quick, but in other cases (such as a power outage when I'm not home or even a power loss that only lasts a second and I don't otherwise notice) I don't know it's not running and thus don't restart it for a while.

Glitch(?) with ConfirmAccounts
Hey jvvg, I'm not sure if you know about this already (I faintly recall talk about a similar glitch in the past), but today I experienced a glitch with ConfirmAccounts — specifically with this account request: https://en.scratch-wiki.info/w/index.php?title=Special:ConfirmAccounts/authors&acrid=6397&wpShowRejects=1
Instead of directing me to the correct profile, the link directed me to a ten-year-old inactive account. I'm glad I checked the Scratch account verification project, as otherwise the correct user would not have gotten notified via Scratch and if the wrong user ever came back to Scratch, they could have been worried that their account had been compromised.
I didn't mention either username here due to the sheer publicity of talk pages, but you can click the link inside the ConfirmAccounts interface to go to the 10-year-old inactive account, and you can go to the Scratch user verification project to find the correct user (it's pretty obvious which user it is due to the similar username to the inactive user).
Again, I remember there being an issue in the past with the system getting confused if a user had two consecutive underscores in their username (if I remember correctly), but I don't remember exactly how that got resolved so I decided to notify you anyway.
Also, while I'm here, do you prefer stuff like this to be posted on your talk page or your Scratch profile?
Thanks!
bigpuppy talk ▪︎ contribs 03:03, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
- Also, don't get me wrong, it's a rarity that someone has a username like this, so it may not be worth fixing (if it's even possible to fix).
bigpuppy talk ▪︎ contribs 03:05, 28 May 2020 (UTC) - That's not the only issue, wfGetLBFactory was deprecated in 1.27, which means by 1.28, it had the potential of being broken. Future updates to MediaWiki will result in ConfirmAccount not working at all unless the modifications are rewritten entirely. 08:40, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
- I'm not sure there's much I can do about this, as this is more of a MediaWiki issue. Ultimately the extension (using the original code) uses a built-in function to convert usernames to the MediaWiki format, which I think eliminates consecutive underscores.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 23:24, 30 May 2020 (UTC)- Ah, okay. Thanks for replying. If I get directed to a user who probably didn't apply (like this ten-year-old inactive account) again, I'll just check the account confirmation project to make sure it's the right account. Thanks!

- We should tell future EWs to check the verification project first if the account requester seems inactive.

WikiMonitor malfunction
I don't know if WikiMonitor is supposed to work like this, but the page I just created, had only the Introduction, and WikiMonitor said I needed to add catergories when there was not enough info on the page to put in catergories.
Garnetluvcookie (talk | contribs)Garnetluvcookie 14:37, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

{{NoBots}}

ahmetlii Talk Contributions Directory 14:46, 17 June 2020 (UTC)- You still need to add categories to a page, even if there is very little content. That helps us keep things organized on the Wiki. Also, please don't use {{NoBots}} just to avoid notifications for not putting categories, as it really is something everyone needs to do when creating pages. The page also usually doesn't need much content for you to know what category it belongs in, you can often tell just by the title.

WikiMonitor asked me not to do several edits in a short amount of time, edits on User:Col_Cat228 which is my userpage, when i was just adding and moving stuff to it. Could you please make it so WikiMonitor has no effects on people's userpages? It's annoying. Thanks
Col_Cat228 (talk | contribs) 11:47, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
- See: WikiMonitor (talk | contribs). One of WikiMonitor's purposes is warning users about fast edits. If you don't want to add a notification, simply add {{NoBots}} to your talk page or your main page, but it's not recommended by myself.
ahmetlii Talk Contributions Directory 14:03, 26 June 2020 (UTC)- Col_Cat228, all edits you make to the wiki have to be patrolled, so it's helpful if people don't make a lot of edits in a short amount of time. WikiMonitor is there for a reason; I recommend you do not add {{NoBots}} to your talk page because you may end up missing some important notifications. Thanks, and thank you for editing the wiki!
bigpuppy talk ▪︎ contribs 15:59, 26 June 2020 (UTC)- Also, I recommend you use the "Show preview" button. If you still make a mistake and end up making too many edits on a page, that's okay. But the WikiMonitor notification will help remind you of that.
bigpuppy talk ▪︎ contribs 16:03, 26 June 2020 (UTC)- Userpages are actually one of the most common places where people make a lot of edits rapidly, so it was very much intentional that I included them. ahmetlii Talk Contributions Directory 19:32, 29 June 2020 (UTC)
- That was created because the built-in account request system (Special:RequestAccount) didn't work. However, since we have since fixed it, we no longer use the system you linked to. It still exists, but no longer link to it in any official capacity. Thus, it doesn't really matter that the links may be broken, since nobody should be using it anyway.

Garnetluvcookie (talk | contribs) 15:42, 1 July 2020 (UTC)
- You need to make sure to include a category in the file summary when you upload. It should be formatted like
[[Category:Users' Images]]
(replace "Users' Images" with the name of the relevant category). It looks like in that case, you misspelled "Category" as "Catergory".

Account naming
Hello jvvg,
I have been having some problems with my scratch account, the only fix for it may be to create a new one, which I would not like, but may happen nonetheless. I want to ask: Is it possible to change the username of a scratch wiki account so as to reflect the scratch account? I am asking this as the only fix might be to get a new account, and so I would like the usernames to match.
I haven't asked anyone else, and this is just an is this possible? question and NOT an actual request to do so yet.
I haven't updated the links at the top to this as, 1. I don't know how to, 2. I don't trust myself to try, 3. I have a sneaking suspicion it is automatic. Sorry for any waffling/overcomplicating.
Currently, I have put this as a warning on my talk/userpage:
Alert!: | Currently my scratch account has been deleted by accident (not by me), and so PLEASE, PLEASE always contact me until this is removed via my talk page. Thanks for understanding. |
Thanks.

WikiMonitor was disabled for a very short amount of time earlier this month using the disable page for an unacceptable reason. The edits were reverted by the user, but still, it's an unacceptable reason. What do I do? Sorry if this is the wrong place to do it, I don't want to report the revision just yet.

- I have already handled the situation, but thank you for letting me know.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 17:00, 27 September 2020 (UTC)- (edit conflict :P) I don't think you need to take any action, I've notified that user on their talk page
garnetluvcookie (talk | contribs) 17:02, 27 September 2020 (UTC)- Got it, thanks.

change the notice to the below
It's more noticable and won't be ignored.

- I think it's noticeable enough as-is.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 20:31, 27 September 2020 (UTC)- I don't think it's noticeable enough or my horrible eyesight is getting worse.

Hi jvvg ! This was the current pen extension footer :
What the 3.0 version will be :
Do you agree about that ?

- Just to drop in my two cents, I do think the navbox's heading colour should be changed, but I don't really see a reason to change the entire thing. Also, shouldn't it say "This block is a pen extension block", not was, because it still is?
Dominic305 Talk Contribs (1,791) Scratch Directory 14:39, 27 October 2020 (UTC)- Hi, just FYI a better place to put this discussion would be the talk page for the extension itself, since there's no reason this really needs to go by me specifically, and we want to include everyone in the discussion.

Edits made by a nonexistent user
Hi, so I logged onto my account today and looked at my watchlist, which showed that a user named Naleksuh had made edits to pages that I had edited yesterday. As you can see, this user no longer exists. I plan on reverting their edits on both pages because the edit that they made removed the "Not Useful" banner and the "Needs Updates" banner on them which were not yet resolved. Is this a result of vandalism which got this user banned/deleted?
84375 (talk | contribs) 17:58, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
- Naleksuh is a real user, they just don't have a userpage. See the user list.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 18:01, 9 November 2020 (UTC)- Edit conflict, I was gonna say that too, lol
Dominic305 Talk Contribs (1,791) Scratch Directory 18:02, 9 November 2020 (UTC)- 84375, you added an update template to a 2.0 page then claimed the 3.0 page was a duplicate of the 2.0 page. So yes, they are resolved-- the 2.0 pages and 3.0 pages are for different purposes and tags were not correct. If that makes sense, they should be removed.

WikiMonitor blocks custom signatures
Hi jvvg!
So, Wiki monitor left a comment on my talk page saying that I forgot to place a signature, but I just put my Custom signature. Here's my custom siggy for your reference:
Lovecodeabc Links: talk (new topic) | contribs (815) | directory
I'll sign with my regular signature now.
Lovecodeabc (talk | contribs) 20:34, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
- You need to include the timestamp for WikiMonitor to recognize it. To do that, you can either set your signature in your preferences and sign with four tildes (
~~~~
) or you can include the timestamp by itself with five tildes ({{User:Lovecodeabc/Signature}} ~~~~~}}
).
Privacy question
Can bureaucrats see your username and password that you use on the Scratch Wiki? Can sysops see the e-mail address of a user when their Scratch Wiki account is created?
Thanks for looking
4096bits | Talk | 836 Contribs 21:36, 10 November 2020 (UTC)
- We can see your username (in the same way that anyone else can). We cannot see your password, and the password is stored as a hash (even in the account request), so it is essentially impossible to recover your password from the request. Currently we cannot see your email, though that may change in the future, given that some users have trouble with email verification.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 21:41, 10 November 2020 (UTC)- Ah, I see. Thanks for the information!
Apology
I'm sorry about my behavior on the Project Review Status talk page. I see in retrospect that my messages were out of line and unnecessarily accusatory.
