Thanks
Thank you for telling me about the image thing. Also do you need to do the cache thing right away?
Ziggy741 (talk | contribs) 23:30, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
- Yes, you need to take the necessary steps to clear your cache if you want the new image to display. Usually refreshing the file page will do the trick.

Even Worse
I was going to upload another version of the page that shows instead of a project you reported. I didn't make the file size smaller, and the quality was even worse. How do I make it so it won't be terrible quality?
Ziggy741 (talk | contribs) 15:17, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
- Take a screenshot of the page when the browser window is full sized.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 21:18, 18 August 2016 (UTC)- When I did the screenshot I was in full screen mode. I tried pasting the screenshot on GIMP and PaintTool SAI, but they seem to ruin the quality. I used Paint for the current one. (The simple program.) Also do you report projects? If you do, then maybe you could reupload a new version of the file.

Question
Why is the Los Angeles Metro one of your favorite subway systems?
Swampert11 (talk | contribs) 19:49, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
- I like it because of the way that it is all a single interconnected design and the fact that the station designs are generally more elaborate than those on other systems.

I've got a question about the wiki!
How do you categorize new pages? I'm asking because there is no tutorial on how to categorize.

F1lip (talk | contribs) 11:30, 20 August 2016 (UTC)
- Use [[Category:CATEGORY]] at the bottom of a page. 16:53, 20 August 2016 (UTC)
- I figured that out anyway...

F1lip (talk | contribs) 17:03, 20 August 2016 (UTC)
Out of interest...
Would the edit I made to Scratch_Wiki:News_Updating count as vandalism, or grammar fixing? Will it be reverted at all?- Grammar fixing is ok when you're not editing something that belongs to another user (i.e. another user's talk page message or a userpage). In this case, since the page wasn't protected, you were allowed to edit it.

It is nice to see that you are still here because without you I think the wiki would be seriously lost. I would like to congratulate you on being accepted to Case Western Reserve University! Images
Is it possible to prevent users from uploading new versions of an image?
Ziggy741 (talk | contribs) 15:57, 28 August 2016 (UTC)
- I don't think so, you probably just have to trust people enough to not change it.
- Pianogirl84 ♬ Talk ♬ Contributions 17:14, 28 August 2016 (UTC)
- Admins can protect it, but that's it. Unless it's considered an image that shouldn't be changed (i.e. ST-maintained, for a featured article, etc.), then a user has the right to upload a new version if it's better.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 17:16, 28 August 2016 (UTC)- The image is not for a page in the Scratch Wiki, it's for use in the forums. I don't want someone to ruin the pictures I used.

Bug
In the archive count, it suggests you have two half archives. After archive 10, they should all end in .5 (or ½)- That's not a bug. I just called it archive 10½ because it wasn't a normal archive and put the ½ at the end to put it between archives 10 and 11.

Heya
Hey there. Could you teach me PHP please?- PHP is a pretty complicated language and it would take me a long time to teach it, and there isn't really any good channel for me to do so. However, w3schools has some decent tutorials that you could try using. You can also read some introductory material on the PHP website.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 12:54, 18 September 2016 (UTC)- Ah. Can't you teach in categories, like easy to hard? 17:08, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
- In programming (as in everything), easy and hard is subjective. The way I learned PHP was by just jumping in and starting a project, learning relevant stuff as I needed. I'm currently doing the same thing right now learning the Android libraries for Java, and it's working pretty well. It feels like you're coding blind, but it's a good way to learn stuff, as you actually know the practical applications of what you're doing immediately. If I (or anyone else) were just to teach you concepts, you probably would not learn them as well because you would have to find ways to use them, which can be difficult. Practical knowledge is much more important than book knowledge, so I recommend learning by making a project.

Suggestion
Can you make your bot not send a message when you've over-edited a page because you couldn't use show preview because you were using {{DISPLAYTITLE}}? https://wiki.scratch.mit.edu/wiki/User_talk:Banana439monkey#Please_don.27t_make_several_edits_in_a_short_amount_of_time- I am not going to modify the code of WM for that special a case. This happens exceedingly rarely, and I don't want to set a precedent of coding in something for exceptions that aren't fairly common. If you know you are going to be messing with the display title and don't want to receive a notification, you can either use the Scratch Wiki sandbox (WM is set to ignore that page for making too many edits too quickly) or add {{NoBots}} to your talk page while you make the edits. Also, I just tested it out myself and found that the modified title does show when you hit "Show preview". However, the template is ignored if you change the text of the title (you can only change the formatting of the title with DISPLAYTITLE). See Wikipedia's documentation for more information.

Category... Help?
Hi @Jvvg! For my user page, I uploaded a few pictures. I read that you needed to use the code Category: User's Images in the Summary box. I had done that, and I had gotten messages from you saying that I didn't. I was wondering what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks!

-unsigned comment by AllAboutTheFries (talk | contribs)
- When you put a category on a page or file, you need to put it like a link (in double square brackets, so in this case
[[Category:Users' Images]]
). You didn't include the brackets, so the Wiki didn't detect it as a category. I went in and fixed the images for you. If you have any other questions, check out Help:Categories or ask me (or any other active user) for help. Welcome to the Wiki!

jvvg (talk | contribs) 23:03, 19 November 2016 (UTC)
I got a false positive from your bot.
Your bot has placed a false positive even though I had signed the post. I'm sure that is from bad programming, but I want to know how to safely post a custom sig.
I did two signatures because if I only did my custom one it would do the same thing.
BF10 (talk | contribs) 22:54, 25 November 2016 (UTC)
- This mistake is not, in fact, due to bad programming. You need to include the timestamp for WM to mark a post as signed. In order to include the timestamp in your posts, go to your preferences and set your sig as your custom sig and then sign with four tildes to insert the custom sig and timestamp.

Couple of questions
Heya, Jvvg!
I had a couple of questions for you. One question is of tutorials to teach new editors the code used in the Wiki, and a Testing Page. Another is what is the actual code used in the Wiki. Lastly, I wanted to ask if there is a list of articles that need editing. I thank you for your time and effort on this Wiki.
Thanks, Customhacker
Customhacker (talk | contribs) 03:55, 12 January 2017 (UTC)
- I don't quite understand your first question. What are you asking me about tutorials and testing pages? For your second question, the Wiki is running a standard installation of MediaWiki with a custom skin and a few extensions. See Special:Version for more information. The extensions specific to Scratch are ConfirmAccounts, ScratchWikiSkin, and mw-ScratchSig2. For your final question, we have a few lists. Check out Category:Article Stubs, Category:Articles to Expand, Category:Inaccurate Articles, and Category:Wiki Standards.

Heya! I got more questions for you! So first off, I was wondering if it was acceptable for editors to create templates for public and/or personal use. When you talk about making Wiki tutorials on the main site, do you mean creating a tutorial on how to use the Wiki or a tutorial like our how-to pages? If it's a tutorial on how to use the Wiki, we would prefer you keep it here (though we won't stop you if you make one on the main site), and if you mean something like our how-to pages, there are plenty of forum posts explaining how to do things, and that would be a good place for tutorials that might not necessarily fit on the Wiki.

isOnline
Would it be against the Wiki Guidelines to create a article about isOnline by World_Languages? (Sorry if I was not supposed to say the user's name!) All the guidelines say is "Topics that have been considered important/notable enough in Scratch's history by a majority of wiki editors that they deserve an article. (ex. Kaj, Removed Pac-Man Project, etc.)"
Customhacker (talk | contribs) 02:49, 16 January 2017 (UTC)
- Could you please give me a quick explanation of what that is?
jvvg (talk | contribs) 02:50, 16 January 2017 (UTC)- Essentially, it was a extension created by World_Languages that would show if a user was on Scratch or not. It was banned by the Scratch Team.
Customhacker (talk | contribs) 02:54, 16 January 2017 (UTC)- No, that doesn't seem worthy of an article.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 02:59, 16 January 2017 (UTC)- Many users complained (I forgot that part!) The creator told me to say "tell him isOnline received 80 downloads in two days, one day Scratch being down for 5 hours" .... The creator is also a wiki editor. (I am not trying to argue. I am having 2 conversations at once. Also, according to the rules, it says that it should be considered by multiple editors. Does that mean I can ask some other editors?)
Customhacker (talk | contribs) 03:03, 16 January 2017 (UTC)- That still doesn't change the policy. It is not a major part of Scratch history. Other editors would probably agree with that. I actually created a similar extension back in the 1.4 days that showed peoples' post counts, and the Scratch Team banned that one, and that's not on the Wiki either. In the brief time it was out there (a few hours), a bunch of people started using it.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 03:06, 16 January 2017 (UTC)- Ok. Thank you for your opinion. I completely understand.

Custom Sig Tests
Hello! I was just testing out my sig on my sand box when i discovered that when you use User:USER/sig it works, but not with 5 tildes. https://wiki.scratch.mit.edu/wiki/User:Customhacker/Sandbox
Customhacker (talk | contribs) 05:25, 16 January 2017 (UTC)

- <br/> {{User:bigpuppy/Signature}} ~~~~~
- The 5 tildes at the end are for the timestamp.
bigpuppy talk ▪︎ contribs 15:11, 16 January 2017 (UTC)- That might be the problem. Is there a shorter way to write the sig?
Cυƨтσмнαcκεя ( тαʟκ | cσптяıв ) 15:31, 16 January 2017 (UTC)- If you go to your user preferences (click your username at the top right and select "Preferences" from the dropdown), you can set your signature to your custom sig (the part in curly braces) and check the Wikitext option. This will make your signature show when you type in the four tildes.

List of Rejected Suggestions
This is about the main website, but I figured I'd post it here because you are more active here. I have tons of Ideas for your list of rejected suggestions, but it only gets updated about once per week. I was wondering if I could do it, as I am active in the forums everyday and see most posts. (I also manage to find tons of duplicates). I thank you for considering.
Cυƨтσмнαcκεя ( тαʟκ | cσптяıв )
- Remember that a lot of people already don't read the list, and making it long will only make it less likely for people to read it, so it really should just be for the most important ones.

Cυƨтσмнαcκεя ( тαʟκ | cσптяıв )- I'm saying that it's probably not going to help anybody so it's not really a good idea to make an even longer list of rejected suggestions.

Cυƨтσмнαcκεя ( тαʟκ | cσптяıв ) - The thread is full of spam simply because it's a sticky and people post on the first thread they see. If you make a thread that's a sticky and don't close it, it will also find itself full of spam. You are welcome to make one (I'm not a forum moderator or Scratch Team member, so you don't need my permission for anything forum-related), but I am warning you that it probably won't help, as we already have two sticky threads detailing the list of rejected suggestions and many people still suggest stuff listed in both of those. I also can't guarantee that the Scratch Team will sticky it, seeing as there are already two other similar threads.

Bureaucrats
Hi, it's me again. I was wondering how people get bureaucracy? Is it only ST members, or are there some selected Scratchers (or I should say, Wikians) with no relation to the ST who did well enough on the Wiki that they became bureaucrats? I'm not interested in the responsibility, I'm just curious.

Question!
Why hello there! (Please click all links so you get the whole story) So, @customhacker, (I'm sure you know him) made a studio called the Forum Wikian Helpers, for people who help out on the forums and are wiki editors. He invited me and some others. And then he had the idea of making a forum shop for Wikians (I think those are what they are called, right?) to request wikicode, and other stuff for editing the wiki. And then when he made the forum topic for the shop, he added an order form for wiki application grading. Basically you would be able to have us grade your wiki application. But then a thought came to my mind. And I asked @customhacker about it. I asked him "Hmm.... I think we should ask @jvvg before we add an application grading order form. Because maybe they want people to do their applications themselves. So maybe we should ask @jvvg for that." So basically, that is what I am asking you about! Could you please reply as soon as possible? Thanks!
P.S.: It is fine if we cannot do wiki application grading, that is why I am asking you about it.

A Wiki feature I think should be added
Hi jvvg! I think there should be a new feature of the wiki for editors. You know on the left there are Scratch Wiki Home, Random Page, Community Portal... I think we need one more thing there for editors to see, and that is Stubs. It would help editors a lot when looking for something to do (like I always have to). Thanks!
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 10:55, 28 March 2017 (UTC)
- You could always just go to the guides section of my stuff, where there are links to Stubs.
Cυƨтσмнαcκεя ( тαʟκ | cσптяıв ) 11:09, 28 March 2017 (UTC)- No, what I'm suggesting is a link in the bar on the left (the one with frequently used links, I use random page most often) to the Category:Stubs page. This would only appear when logged in as a wiki editor. It would be quite helpful for us editors when we want to take a look at things that need improvement.
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 12:17, 28 March 2017 (UTC)- I tried adding it in the interface editor, but it doesn't appear to be displaying properly (once I can figure out how to make it display properly, my plan was to make a page with links to stuff to work on, including stubs, wiki standards articles, etc.)
jvvg (talk | contribs) 02:38, 29 March 2017 (UTC)- If that's the case, I wish you luck making it work. Can all editors edit that page (or will they be able to if it's protected right now)?
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 02:46, 29 March 2017 (UTC)- I couldn't get any links to show up on the sidebar, so unfortunately this would probably require a lot more in-depth work. However, only admins can edit the sidebar and once I create that page, I would probably protect it.

Your status on the wiki
You're a wiki admin, but you're not in the ST. In that case, you're not a bureaucrat? How did you become an admin?
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 08:15, 30 March 2017 (UTC)
- I originally became an EW because I implemented the account request system that is currently in use. I later became an admin basically because I asked to (after being an EW for over a year). The normal process is that we elect EWs whenever we see a need for more and at the election time we promote all the active EWs to admin.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 18:35, 30 March 2017 (UTC)- EW? Please define. You made the account request system, so you became one. What other ways are there to become one? Are there particular reasons for electing them? Or is there a nomination system? (Sorry about the influx of questions; I'm very curious about this.)
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 04:56, 31 March 2017 (UTC)- Experienced Wikians. When needed, there is an election. See Scratch Wiki:Experienced Wikians for more information.
Cυƨтσмнαcκεя ( тαʟκ | cσптяıв ) 11:28, 31 March 2017 (UTC)- To become an Experienced Wikian, you need to run in an election when we have one (we don't have any plans to host one in the immediate future, but we will post on the CP when one is coming up). Generally the way it works is that a bunch of people (usually it ends up being around 10) nominate themselves, then the existing EWs and admins pick a few of them (usually 5 or 6) to run, then the Wiki community votes on the people chosen to run and the top two become EWs. Also, there's no need to apologize. Questions are how we learn.

- Experienced Wikians. When needed, there is an election. See Scratch Wiki:Experienced Wikians for more information.
- EW? Please define. You made the account request system, so you became one. What other ways are there to become one? Are there particular reasons for electing them? Or is there a nomination system? (Sorry about the influx of questions; I'm very curious about this.)
Originally we had a Wiki page to vote (see Scratch Wiki:Elections/October 2014 for an example), but now it's an offsite thing that I designed (users verify their Wiki credentials and then vote, but the votes are not shown publicly like they were before). I say my username as each letter (i.e. "jay vee vee gee"), but you're welcome to pronounce it however you want.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 02:42, 1 April 2017 (UTC)
- Any screenshots or mockups of the offsite system so I can see what it's like? While waiting for your answer, I idly tried to pronounce your username as if it was a word, and ended up with something that sounded like "juvg" . Where'd you get the username/why choose that name?
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 02:25, 3 April 2017 (UTC)- I would have to set it up again to get any screenshots, but it's just a form that lists all the candidates and you rank them in the order you prefer them. My username is just my initials.

- Why did you decide to make the new Wiki account request system? Why did the ST use it?
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 00:09, 21 April 2017 (UTC)- The Scratch 1.X website had an API where external sites could easily check a user's login, and on the Wiki you verified your identity by putting in your Scratch username and password. However, with Scratch 2.0, that was removed for security reasons (they said they were going to replace it with OAuth, but that never ended up happening). At the time, Mod Share was still active, and it also used that technique. Once that was no longer an option, I rewrote the registration system on Mod Share to use comment verification since that was the only good technique I could think of. Nobody had done anything new for the Scratch Wiki, so I emailed the ST asking if I could write it by reusing some of the code used for Mod Share, and they said yes. That's how we got what we have today.

- Sloppily. More specifically, it's a jumble of a bunch of pieces I added on one at a time and didn't think too much about putting together in an orderly manner. It started just as a way to check for excessive edits and unsigned posts, but I added on category checking and a few enhancements after the fact.

WM on my user talk
WM told me that I didn't sign my post after editing a user talk page. This is normal, right? However, the page in question was my own user talk and the edit was adding a little welcome message! Is this fixable or should I just deal with it?
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 09:30, 29 April 2017 (UTC)
- It only triggers the message if the content you add is at the end of the section (which in your case it was, even though it wasn't a new message). In the future, if you mark the edit as minor, then WM won't check it. Unfortunately it can be hard to tell what is a message and what is header stuff since as a human it involves looking at what content was added. However, now that you brought this to my attention, I am thinking that maybe if it's in the first section and the edit is made by the owner, then it could ignore it.

User:WikiMonitor/Configuration/UnsignedMessage
Hi, it's me again. About images
Is it possible to set the size of images relative to the element containing them? What I'm getting at is, in my Welcome template I have the font-size set to 1.75vh. This sets it relative to the height of its containing element (in this case the bordered div). Is it possible to use a File: link and set its size in vh rather than px? I want to set the font size to default and have the image size get set relative to the size of the div instead. Any tips?
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 08:04, 13 May 2017 (UTC)
- I've changed it now so that the font size is 12px, but I'm still afraid if the div's width gets too narrow it'll overflow the text again. I ask again: is it possible to set an image's size to a unit other than px?
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 00:39, 18 May 2017 (UTC)- You can use a percent, or alternatively you can use other attributes to determine how it fits in with everything else there.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 15:15, 18 May 2017 (UTC)- I believe percent is percent of original width though, not of container size, which is what I'm really looking for. I'm trying to make the div fit itself to the text inside, and change the image size accordingly, instead of having a fixed div height to fit a fixed image size, and changing the font size accordingly (which has been unreliable since two people contacted me about text overflowing outside the box). Is this possible?
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 23:08, 18 May 2017 (UTC)- It's definitely possible. I can't think off the top of my head how to do it, but if you want I can give it a try.

I made it as a table in my sandbox. If you like that better, feel free to use it. Because it's a table, it shouldn't break prematurely since it needs to include every element.

When I make a post like this, WikiMonitor believes that it is not signed when it is.
1a3c5e7g9i(Talk|Contributions) 02:31, 23 May 2017 (UTC)
- You need to go change your signature by going to username (top right) -> preferences and setting it. Then it can be included with four tildes and also include the timestamp. WM requires a timestamp in order to think your post was signed properly.

The colors of the text and background look extremely similar to me.
On a related note, please do what I did in my preferences for my siggy. Your current signature is substituted instead of transcluded, and that adds a lot to talk pages.
