Question
Can I create a really nice-looking Scratch Wiki:Elections November 2014 page using good CSS styling and formatting for the elections? For some reason I want to make the page. Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 01:18, 24 September 2014 (UTC)
- Sure. You can draft it as a subpage of your userpage. Please just include all the info on the current page (Scratch Wiki:Elections/October 2014), but add anything else you think would be important.

A new question about ScratchR...
Remember jvvg how you uploaded a copy of ScratchR and shared it in the CP? I just unzipped it and got a .vmdk and a .ovf file. I also downloaded virtual box to run the vmdk, and added the vmdm: http://tinypic.com/m/idhj82/1
After that, I ran the vmdk and got: http://tinypic.com/m/idhj6o/1
I'm not sure what to do after this to open the Scratch 1.4 website, or if I'm doing anything wrong. Can you help me? Also, I'm running OSX Mavericks. ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 20:14, 24 September 2014 (UTC)
- That's odd. You should be getting an OVA file by itself.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 21:56, 24 September 2014 (UTC)
- An .ova file? I'll try redownlaoding ScratchR then.
- In the meanwhile, since several Wikians liked the story I submitted for KrIsMa's speech collection effort earlier in the CP, would you mind if I submitted a CP topic about a new narrative? Or would you consider that off topic?

I thought I might share it with you: Multiple Personalities
What do you think of it? ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 01:24, 26 September 2014 (UTC)

jvvg (talk | contribs) 01:26, 26 September 2014 (UTC)
- Actually, hold that thought. The problem is on my end. Since you shared a piece with me, here's my latest one: [1]. Please note that it is unfinished.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 01:27, 26 September 2014 (UTC)
- Listening to it on another computer, it sounds pretty nice.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 01:38, 26 September 2014 (UTC)
- I had to record my piece with my laptop, which is apparently a worse recorder then my iPod touch. You'd expect the opposite.
- But anyway, I'm glad that you liked my piece! I liked your piece too, especially the chords (which is at least half the song). I even think I started to see some patterns in how you write your music. You like lots of tetrads in your music. It's interesting to note.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 21:28, 27 September 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah, 4 note chords always seem to convey the most "stuff" in them for me.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 21:42, 27 September 2014 (UTC)
- Have you ever tried experimenting with chords that aren't just c e g c? (Or the same thing in other keys?)
- By the way, what's this talk about a negative ticket balance?

Well, my Modern Piano Sonata has more variety in chords. I wrote it after taking a thing on chord progression in piano theory. jvvg (talk | contribs) 00:35, 28 September 2014 (UTC)
- Wait, so you could teach me about chord progression? Could you? Pretty please?
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 00:41, 28 September 2014 (UTC)
- Well, I can only give you the bits I know about it, and I only sort of follow the traditional rules. The basic rule is that you need to include all three elements of a chord (1 3 5) in every chord. You also need to avoid certain things, such as parallel fifths or octaves (that's the rule I break most). I was only sort of following the rules (e.g. having the long note be VII, B Major in C# Minor at the beginning; that's discouraged).
jvvg (talk | contribs) 00:45, 28 September 2014 (UTC)
- pretty much down 5 up 4 for the root chord, jvvg
KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 00:49, 28 September 2014 (UTC)
- Parallel 5ths means having fifths in two chords in a row (e.g. c e g c, g b d g).

PHP
Because I know that you have some knowledge with PHP, can you tell me like where a workspace is, so that I can type in code and I can render it? Jandrewg (talk | contribs) 20:57, 26 September 2014 (UTC)

User getting around a ban
I believe Tcodina who recently proposed a Spanish Wiki, is banned on the main site. I don't know how you want to do this but for backing up, look at Superdoggy's comment on Tcodina's profile. -PRO- (talk | contribs) 13:15, 27 September 2014 (UTC)
- Actually, a common misconception, we no longer ban users on the Wiki unless they go and continue their trouble here. In one case, Molybdenum, they were banned because they kept complaining about it and nobody could get anything done.
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 13:27, 27 September 2014 (UTC)
- However, part of the point of the verification code is to make sure that you have not been banned on the main site.

Krett12 (talk | contribs) 17:53, 27 September 2014 (UTC)
- WM on GitHub is only the RC crawler. The other tasks are stuff that aren't really specific to WM, so I hold on to them myself. Also, if you think the crawler is poorly documented, the scripts are much worse. They are near-impossible to use, and they all take different input formats.

You're part of FutureSight, right?
Hey, I am browsing the Wiki on Silvinet. And there are some problems. The skin doesn't work, all the links are orange, Silvinet keeps saying that "scratchBlocksPlugin is undefined", and it is showing 2 logos. The 2.0 wiki one and the 1.4 one (without the text underneath) Krett12 (talk | contribs) 19:51, 27 September 2014 (UTC)
- That's because it uses the .NET browser engine. Unfortunately, not much can be done about it.

How did you learn PHP?
PHP is the one thing I really need to do in order to, I don't want to say master, but excel at web design. I passed the course on Codecademy but it really did not apply it to useful situations nor teach how to use it with MySQL databases. Where did you learn PHP? Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 13:06, 28 September 2014 (UTC)
- I would like to know this too.
-PRO- (talk | contribs) 13:19, 28 September 2014 (UTC)
- Well, at least to get started, I actually had LS97 give me a short crash course in it. I then just started creating stuff with it (my first project was "CodeShare", a website to upload code). For a long time, I never learned SQL because I just stored everything in files. SQL is pretty complicated, but if you want, I can try to give you a crash course. However, doing so would probably require a better medium of communication than the Wiki.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 14:10, 28 September 2014 (UTC)
- I actually passed PHP on Codecademy but felt it did not provide all the necessary uses of PHP. Suppose I have a text file in the same directory as my PHP. What would be the PHP code for modifying that text file? That's all I really need to know honestly :P I just need to know how to modify and access a server-side text storage file with PHP.
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 15:29, 28 September 2014 (UTC)
- Oh, and how to pass on HTML form parameters to PHP. Also I found this http://stackoverflow.com/questions/12489033/php-modify-a-single-line-in-a-text-file which helped.
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 15:33, 28 September 2014 (UTC)
- Just wondering, how much experience do you have in other languages? If you have significant experience in Java or C(++) then PHP may be difficult for a couple reasons. PHP, unlike most other languages, is hybrid procedural and object-oriented. It also has weak data typing (values have types but variables don't), and arrays are extremely weird (keys can be strings, and the sizes are not fixed).

Despite the fact that PHP has a kind of high learning curve, it is an extremely powerful language that allows rapid development of large-scale web stuff. Anyway, if JS is your only experience in a C-based language, PHP should be a little easier. jvvg (talk | contribs) 17:19, 28 September 2014 (UTC)

Update on ScratchR
I just re-downloaded ScratchR and unzipped it. When it finished unzipping, I got a .ova, but then about 10 seconds later, that got replaced by a .vmdk and a .ovf. Any ideas why? ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 02:04, 29 September 2014 (UTC)
- Is that after you opened it with VBox? If so, that's the files storing machine information.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 11:05, 29 September 2014 (UTC)
- No, this occurred outside of VBox, or about 10 seconds after unzipping.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 16:30, 29 September 2014 (UTC)
- That's odd. It must have a background daemon or something. Did you try importing the .ovf file? If that doesn't work, try setting up a machine with OS as Ubuntu Server 64-bit (it must be 64-bit, if it's not available, you can't do it) and the first HDD as the vmdk file?

Hey D: (and this time the bad kind)
Since when do I get nobots overridden? I don't need that...do I? \:( The only "exceptions" I need is for it to comment at /OtherThings Krett12 (talk | contribs) 01:20, 30 September 2014 (UTC)
- Well, you've gotten enough notifications from WM recently that I figured you should probably keep getting them (I don't mean that to be rude, I just want to make sure you remember to fix any mistakes). Anyway, I'm not going to reprogram WM for one user's preferences. Even if I decide to reorganize my talk page (I won't do that, this is just hypothetical), I would leave the main talk available for WM.

- I understand about the talk page thing, but for the override list, I wasn't trying to permanently put an end to it, I just wanted a quick break from it.....could I come off that list for a few weeks?

Check It Out!
I have been working on a small chat for my site which uses txt file storage. Basically, the chat stores up to 25 posts, and when there are more the last one gets deleted. Inspired by you, I wrote the PHP for the storage and HTML form submitting! I was thinking maybe you could just tell me of any flaws/issues before I actually implement it into my site if you wouldn't mind. It's pretty short:
<?php $i; $count; $text; $index; if(isset($_POST['submit'])) { $file = 'posts.txt'; $handle = fopen($file,'w'); $length = strlen($text); $text = file_get_contents('posts.txt'); $code = "<div class='post'><p><span class='grey'>" . $_POST['name'] . "</span>" . $_POST['text'] . "</p></div>"; //the new code if(substr_count($text) > 149) { //If there are 25 posts, it'll have to delete the last one $count = 0; for($i == $length; $i>0 && $count < 6; $i--) { if(substr($text,$i - 1) == '<') { $index = $i; $count += 1; } } $code += substr($text, 0, $index); } fwrite($handle, $code); fclose($handle); } ?>
I am sure there are syntax and other errors so I wanted an expert to review it! Also, just so you know posts.txt is the file that stores the chat data, which actually stores HTML content in form of a text file which will be echoed to the HTML document.
The whole 'for' loop's purpose is to detect, if there are more than 25 posts (which would be 75 < symbols of elements) where the last post begins in the file, and to cut it out.
The only problem I have is I think that this writes to a file rather than overwriting the file :/ but any help/advice appreciated! Thanks! Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 01:55, 30 September 2014 (UTC)
- I am also thinking of a better way to detect the amount of posts, I'll probably just have it stored as a comment in the beginning of the file.

Thoughts on Making Users Read the Pages Before Requesting Account
There has to be something we could do about this. I am not sure how much control you have over Wiki code, but my idea was that when they read S:CONTRIB a cookie is stored in their browser and the account will not be requested unless that cookie is present. We could also maybe make usage of Javascript alerts warning that reading the pages is extremely important and determinant on whether or not the account will be accepted or rejected. Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 00:59, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, I really don't have much control over Wiki code. Since I hardcoded much of the request system software too, it would be hard to change that without going through the whole mess on github.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 01:00, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
- hmm, can't users just go to the page, immediately leave, and try requesting? ;)::

Archive
If SysopBot was accepted, it would archive your talk page now. Can you do it for the bot since it was rejected? Krett12 (talk | contribs) 02:56, 3 October 2014 (UTC)
- There are still active discussions going on right now, which is exactly why a bot to archive everybody's talk page is a bad idea. Also, different people have different customs for how big the page needs to be to merit an archive.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 10:54, 3 October 2014 (UTC)

Candidates for the EW election october 2014
Who are the chosen candidates of the election? Is it limited to the six candidates who have posted their speeches? I nominated myself and want to know if I am a chosen candidate. Thanks, Jandrewg.
Please respond on my talk page so that I am sure to see it. Jandrewg (talk | contribs) 22:21, 3 October 2014 (UTC)
- The candidates are KrIsMa, -PRO-, Swampert11, SuperSmashScratch, Turkey3, and I - you would have gotten a message on your talk page and have been put onto Scratch Wiki:Elections/October 2014 to write your speech if you were chosen. ;)

Election Bot
How can I make the messages more respectful so I can turn the cheerleading back on? Since all the humans are talking about the elections, why can't the bots too? Krett12 (talk | contribs) 22:48, 4 October 2014 (UTC)
- Because your bot wasn't authorized to do this function.
- But anyway, maybe you could just post their current score, and nothing else? Like:
- "jvvg, you currently have 890 points in the EW election. You can view the full list of results here: link"

My Page (Deleted??)
Hi! I recently made a page called "Experienced Wikian" and I have searched for it as I have just logged on and there is no search results for the page, I made it all by myself! It took me 3 hours just to make the 1 page, I was wondering if a EW has removed it! I added a category and I had different sections! I have not even had a message or anything from anyone saying that the page has been deleted! I`m wondering what has happened! Cooldude5367 (talk | contribs) 19:19, 5 October 2014 (GMT)
- It was deleted because 1) We already have a page like that here and 2) We don't put articles about the Wiki in the main namespace. Hope this helps!

Bot Request
Hi! I would like to request a bot! Is there a easier and less-complicated way to request a bot? Cooldude5367 (talk | contribs) 19:40, 5 October 2014 (GMT)
- No, there's just Scratch Wiki:Bot Requests.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 18:42, 5 October 2014 (UTC)

Cooldude5367 (talk | contribs) 19:45, 5 October 2014 (GMT)
- Add a row to the table at the top, then click "Comment" from the pencil menu to explain in more detail what your bot does (the comment section should be in the format of a talk page).

- Edit conflicted by jvvg.
- First, you'll need to add your bot request to the table. Here is an example:
- Can you make a row in the table please? I don`t know how to? What do I write when I click on "Comment"?
- Thank you for the helpful tips!

- Make sense?
- Once you have that filled out, copy it, edit Scratch Wiki:Bot Requests, and paste your request under where it says: <!-- add requests below here, starting with |- -->
- That's the biggest step. The next step is getting a bit more in detail in what your bot will do, and why you think the Wiki needs it. At the bottom of Scratch Wiki:Bot Requests, add a new section describing your bot, why it should be accepted, ect...
- You're done!
