Welcome to My Talk Page, Leave a message here to contact me :)

You're not using a signature template

Apparently we're all supposed to use signature templates... you might want to do it as well. ;)

Oh, since I'm here - thanks for all your work on the wiki! :D
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 07:12, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

Quite a late reply :p Today I changed the signature system so no more signature templates; Everyone can just do ~~~~ and there you go :D And thanks, I'm happy you appreciate the work I put into the wiki :)
JSO (talk | contribs) 21:57, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
The new stuff you've done is really cool! :D But can I keep my old signature? :3
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 22:09, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
WOOOOOOOOO THESE SIGNATURES ARE AWESOME I WANT TO USE THEM :O :O :O
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 22:10, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
As you can see your sig has already changed for the new messages :p So it's not possible to keep it. For your old messages, well, it'd be nice if you changed your old sig page to <scratchsig>Jonathanpb</scratchsig> too, to match the style :) But you don't have to if you're a bit nostalgic :)
JSO (talk | contribs) 22:14, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
Lawl :P As JSO mentioned :)
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 22:14, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
Oh I see you already changed your old sig to the new style :p Thank you ^^
JSO (talk | contribs) 22:28, 2 October 2010 (UTC)

Hey JSO

I saw how you put a header onto your pages. It inspired me to create my own header! You can see it on my User page. (Please don't edit it) User:Dazman

JSOadmin

Who is that? You? Are you on the Scratch Team? What's the other account for?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 11:54, 7 March 2011 (UTC)

JSOadmin was his first account, but he later created the JSO one for a proper username. :)
And he's not in the Scratch Team - rather, he's a Community moderator :D
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 01:23, 9 March 2011 (UTC)
OK. I knew he's a mod, but wondered what the "admin" was for. Maybe it was admin for the wiki or Scratch Resources.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 07:50, 9 March 2011 (UTC)
Yup :) I set this wiki up so I created an administrator account to start with.
JSO (talk | contribs) 22:12, 21 March 2011 (UTC)
But what would be wrong with this account? Also, JSOadmin isn't even a Scratch user.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 11:20, 20 May 2011 (UTC)
When you setup a web application, it asks you to enter an administrator account. I didn't really look into MediaWiki yet (ofcourse not I was just setting it up) and often the user account entered during the setup process gets some kind of übermighty superfeatures you don't want your daily use account to have. But yeah, I just gave this account admin powers (which weren't all that übermighty afterall) so the admin account is quite pointless. But we can't delete user accounts. That was the whole story :)

Mod Central Wiki

Hi, TheSuccesor and me are coding a wiki for Mod Central, and I'd like to ask some questions. How did you make the whole default sig thing? Or any of the other things you have added on?
ProgrammingFreak (talk | contribs) 19:49, 18 May 2011 (UTC)

Uh, you may want to ask on JSO's talk page. :P
Mind if I move it there?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 13:33, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
Sure. ;)
ProgrammingFreak (talk | contribs) 20:04, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
This wiki is running MediaWiki. The layout is just a MediaWiki skin, so I can send it to you if you want. The signatures work with a plugin I wrote. There's some page you can edit to make signatures use the plugin. You have to make sure that all usernames on your wiki are identical to the Scratch usernames though. I can send the plugin too if you want :) Please let me know.
JSO (talk | contribs) 08:40, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
This would be very nice! Thank you! Should I give my email? I think you have done a great job with this website. :D
ProgrammingFreak (talk | contribs) 21:00, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

Umm.... Hello? (not to be rude, sorry)
ProgrammingFreak (talk | contribs) 12:02, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

Sorry! Please mail wiki at scratch dot mit dot edu and I'll send everything you need :)
JSO (talk | contribs) 21:39, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
Its okay. I bet you're busy! :D I'll do that.
ProgrammingFreak (talk | contribs) 21:57, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
Please do!
JSO (talk | contribs) 22:00, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
Done.
ProgrammingFreak (talk | contribs) 22:19, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

I still cannot create accounts.

You said you activated it for me? Quote Icon.png Quote:

JSO (talk | contribs) 20:48, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
Am I supposed to use my wiki pass or main site pass?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 10:25, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
Main site password (it says :P).
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 11:40, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
Quote Icon.png Quote:
Text:  Invalid username/password or not an admin Please log in with an Administrator account (scratch.mit.edu login)

I've tried changing the pass and it still doesn't register. :(
Scimonster (talk | contribs)

Are you typing in "scimonster" or "Scimonster"? If you're doing the non-capitalized one, I had the same problem with Scratch Resources. I had to capitalize my username for it to work.
BWOG (talk | contribs) 13:31, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
I've tried both. It decapitalizes it automatically.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 13:36, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
In the source, it says the script is at [1]. In there, it says
var validchars = "0123456789abcdfghjkmnpqrstvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ";

Does that mean I can't have anything else in my pass? (Sorry for bugging you.)
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 10:23, 25 May 2011 (UTC)

Well, my password contains more than letters and numbers - I don't think so.
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 10:25, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
So I cannot figure out what is preventing me from accessing it. Maybe it should be changed to just any admin can, not just by "personal invitation" XD.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 10:28, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
As you probably figured out the Scratch Wiki account approval thingy technically has nothing to do with the Scratch Wiki. It doesn't know who the admins are over here, it just allows a list of people (hard coded - yeah), and matches them to their scratch.mit.edu login to know if they're really the person they pretend to be. It's coded really badly and certainly doesn't do valid char tests on your passwords, don't bother. You have to you correct capitalization of your username though (check your userpage on scratch.mit.edu to know what your correct capitalization is - you know, above your icon ^^) I think something went wrong when trying to add you because I tried twice already and it keeps getting reverted, let me get this fixed.
JSO (talk | contribs) 14:13, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
Oh. I'm using the lowercased version, which is what it really is.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 14:16, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
Fixed (for real this time.) please try.
JSO (talk | contribs) 14:19, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
THANK YOU!!!! :D :D :D :D :D
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 14:20, 25 May 2011 (UTC)

Scimonster (talk | contribs) 14:32, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
It's fun! And now that I know how this works, I can say that you can reply to Jon here. :P

I would like to contribute more!

Hi JSO I'm StealthGus I would like to ask to contribute more to scratch. I have enjoyed Scratch more then I enjoy video games this is a fun program to learn programming and a good opportunity to help others. I don't know how I would be able to contribute more by leaving this message but I hope you do!

A new category for Scratch Resources

You want to add a category "workaround scripts" for sprites uploaded to Scratch Resources? Read this to see what it's about.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 14:41, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

Rejected accounts

You know, the accounts page is a little crowded. You should add a button: reject. It just deleted them from the page instead of listing it under "on hold". On hold could be for ones we're not really sure about or aren't ready (i.e, not enough projects). What do you think?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 19:02, 11 July 2011 (UTC)

That *is* what "on hold" is for.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 22:03, 11 July 2011 (UTC)
FYI I think JSO is on vacation, so he might not be online for a while, or at least limited internet access.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 22:04, 11 July 2011 (UTC)
I'm glad that we can see what accounts have been put on hold - it's quite useful actually.
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 05:22, 12 July 2011 (UTC)
IMO it makes the page just take longer to load.
"On hold" makes it sound like they're not ready. What about the ones that say they want to make articles on projects and users?
Maybe there could be a separate page for rejected ones so we could still see them?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 05:30, 12 July 2011 (UTC)
Well that would be fine with me :P (and I guess "on hold" could be renamed xD)
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 07:41, 12 July 2011 (UTC)
I meant three buttons. Approve does what it does, on hold does what it does, but is used for stuff we're not sure about, or they're not ready. Reject would move it into another page.
Currently, when there is one I would set "on hold" in this format, I just leave it pending. Pending would only be for ones that haven't been read yet.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 07:50, 12 July 2011 (UTC)
I think naming the status "on hold" was a design decision -- "rejected" has a negative connotation, and makes it sound like they can't re-try to get approved (which I believe they can). But yes, whatever the reason is that the user is not currently allowed to be approved, they should be put "on hold".
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 14:04, 12 July 2011 (UTC)
I indeed used on hold just to make clear they can still be approved after some time. It gives you and new account approvers a good view on what we 'reject', and allows me to check through the rejected accounts every now and then to see if there are some we should still approve :P But yeah, it's getting quite crowded so maybe I should do something about that. (PS: I was indeed on vacation and I'm back now).

User CSS

Scratch Wiki talk:Community Portal/Archive 31#User CSS

This was a while back, and it seems you missed it. Could it please be enabled? :3
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 08:41, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

I doubt that's really useful ;P Do you question my CSS skills? Instead of altering your personal wiki look, you could also post CSS suggestions that would be useful for everyone ;D
JSO (talk | contribs) 15:15, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
But some people want things personalised, like I'd like to be able to expand the main container and change the font. :D
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 15:22, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
I'd rather have everyone using the same CSS. I can see all those, 'hey this looks odd now' complaints coming just because they messed up their own CSS. Just like "bug reports" in troubleshooting that are only there because they modded Scratch.
JSO (talk | contribs) 15:23, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
But if a user knows about it and knows how to use it, surely they'd know how to debug their CSS? I think it'd do more help than harm.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 18:17, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
Also, shouldn't articles be designed to fit the available space? Say you'd edit your wiki box to stretch to 100%, you would probably use images very differently, for example. You might remember what the wiki looked like when we ported it from wikia ;) ;)
JSO (talk | contribs) 19:35, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
The main reason I'd do that isn't for articles. On the regular Scratch skin, you can't see the descriptions of image uploads very well, and I'd expand it slightly so I could see them.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 14:49, 22 April 2012 (UTC)
Maybe just have a short guide telling what not to do with CSS. :/
I have some personal CSS in a Stylish style, I'll post it here and you can review if it can be for everyone. :)

	.mw-plusminus-neg {color: darkRed;}
/* Colors the values in Recent Changes */

	a[href*="Special:Log"], .mw-usertoollinks {text-transform: lowercase;}
/* Lowercases links to [[Special:Log]], and the (Talk | contribs) to be more like the (diff)/(hist) links, and (Talk) like (contribs). */

	div.patrollink, li#feedlinks {display: none !important;}
/* That stuff was just annoying, so, goodbye! */

	#scratchpagefunctions span.selected {font-weight: bold !important;}
/* Bolds the tool you are currently viewing, such as page/talk history/edit etc. */
What do you think of stuff like that?

Suggestion

Uploading .txt files

Hello! Is there any reason we can't upload text (.txt) files?

Many thanks!
Blob8108 (talk | contribs) 09:23, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

Because textual content is better included in pages, or posted on a separate wiki page :) It allows for discussion, editing, and a lot of other useful features.
JSO (talk | contribs) 10:52, 22 April 2012 (UTC)

Let us set our theme in preferences!

I saw your awesome 2.0 theme that you're working on. You should so allow people to use it! (For others: add ?useskin=scratch2 to the end of any page to use it!)
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 02:14, 22 April 2012 (UTC)

Holy wow.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 02:22, 22 April 2012 (UTC)
Right now it's currently being tested, so I don't think we're going to be publicly releasing it yet. :)
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 02:59, 22 April 2012 (UTC)
Well, there's a userscript for everything, including this. :P
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 03:07, 22 April 2012 (UTC)
The reloading does get a bit annoying though. :I
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 03:08, 22 April 2012 (UTC)
The 2.0 theme is still heavily under development, and not supposed to be used just yet.
JSO (talk | contribs) 08:09, 22 April 2012 (UTC)
Meh. It's a cool theme. I can always disable the userscript if something isn't working.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 08:32, 22 April 2012 (UTC)
+1 to JSO: I tried the userscript and found the new theme quite annoying (no offense to JSO, I understand it's under development and all the box model problems will be sorted out at release; my in-development CSS looks much worse). So I'm gonna be sticking to the old one for now. :)

Some things

Are you lurking or what? Some things i'd like cleared up: Scratch Wiki:Interwiki, 1.x info on Wiki 2.0, some more info about the 2.0 theme, and also 2.0 blocksplugin. It's just that you haven't posted for a long time...

Scratch 2.0 Skin

Will you still be able to make the skin even though Lightnin moved the wiki over to Amazon (or something like that, I think)? I hope so. I like the skin you were making. It looked like it would match the beta site perfectly, and probably the final 2.0 site as well. Haven't seen you on in awhile. Can't wait to here your answer. Also, the Interwiki problem in the portal hasn't been solved yet. I don't know if the German Wiki was moved over to the same database ours was moved to. Hope to here hear (spell fail) from you soon.
Curiouscrab (talk | contribs) 22:12, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

If you'll look at Lightnin's post on the community portal, he's said nXIII will be making the skin with help from JSO. The German wiki is an independent project, so I don't believe it was moved (since they're hosting it themselves).
veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 00:28, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
If somebody could, can someone tell them about the move so they feel a little more informed (they still annoyed about Interwiki).
Curiouscrab (talk | contribs) 00:34, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
I'm admin and co-funder of the DACH-Scratch-Wiki ( see http://scratch-dach.info ). We are completely independent and host it ourself, after Scratch Team adviced us to do so. Perhaps the Scratch Team didn't want us to start here in 2/2012, because they first wanted to see, how our Wiki would develop. Bút they helped us with the Skin and the Block AddOn. At some point mid 2012 we hat a virus problem and we solved it by upating our Wiki to the latest version of Wikimedia (at this time the Wikimedia Version of the original Scratch wiki was much older). I saw that you are changing to a new skin - surely because of Scartch 2.0 - but this process isn't finished jet (as 1.3.2013). So we will wait, until your new skin is established and will change to that later. I will be in Barcelona and hope to meet JSO and discuss our proposal about World Wide Scratch Wikis and other Wiki-issues there.
MartinWollenweber (talk | contribs) 13:23, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

Could you help us to prepare Scratch Connecting Worlds 2013 in Barcelona?

Hi JSO!

did you see our proposal about World Wide Scratch Wikis ? We need a third person for the Panel Discussion and perhaps you have an idea who it could be? Perhaps yourself? ;-) Jens Mönig convinced me to go to Barcelona and I will bring Jonatan with me, who was alread in mail-connection with you about our DACH-Scratch-Wiki ( see http://scratch-dach.info ). We also convinced Prof. Eckart Modrow a great BYOB-Evangelist who spred BYOB amongst many teachers in the north of germany and who just published Vorlesungsskript: "Informatik mit BYOB / Snap!" (PDF) to come to Barcelona. Perhaps you can also have a look at Interwiki Diskussion in Community Portal and Scratch Wiki:Interwiki. It would be great, to have something prepared before Barcelona, that we could present there. Thank you in advance for your help!
