Help Wanted

Oh, I see that you are active at this moment. Could you please help me edit some CS articles with urgent care needed, please?--
Chibi-Matoran (talk | contribs) 02:53, 23 May 2016 (UTC)

Sure! I will in a bit. I am currently in the International Scratch club meeting.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 19:28, 23 May 2016 (UTC)
Hi, these articles need some love:
Please help me edit these pages:
https://wiki.scratch.mit.edu/wiki/Efficient_Programming
https://wiki.scratch.mit.edu/wiki/JSON
https://wiki.scratch.mit.edu/wiki/Object-Oriented_Programming
https://wiki.scratch.mit.edu/wiki/Programming_Language
The programming language one was even slated for deletion. Thank you!

Chibi-Matoran (talk | contribs) 20:11, 22 May 2016 (UTC)
I ended up getting caught up in a side coding project. By the way, thank you for the links! That is always helpful.
By the way, there was a section in Programming_Language where you were talking about forms. That did not feel clear to the point that it was hard to understand, so I attempted some clarification. What did you mean there?
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 02:27, 24 May 2016 (UTC)
Do you mean "special forms?" I did not write that part. Special forms are basically special cases where the inputs are not evaluated, and which cannot be replicated within the language. It's essentially a exception. At least, that was my understanding of the concept, from what I know.
Chibi-Matoran (talk | contribs) 04:28, 24 May 2016 (UTC)
I re-read the section, and the reason why it was so confusing at first was because I had skipped over the paragraphs above it. My mistake!
I'm truthfully having some trouble finding how to contribute to the pages. Efficient Programming was the easiest of the four to add too, mostly because it's something I'm more familiar with.

Scratch 3.0 Blocks

This article has pictures of blocks for Scratch 3.0. I noticed that you got the pictures. Where do they come from?
Ziggy741 (talk | contribs) 16:34, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

At the Scratch Conference @ MIT 2016, there was a discussion panel named "What's Next for Scratch?" One of the things they discussed is Scratch 3.0. The panel also used a slideshow to help their presentation.
After the panel ended, I asked Andrew (@thisandagain) if I could have a copy of the slideshow for Wiki purposes. He agreed. That slideshow is where I got the Scratch 3.0 block images from.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 03:22, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
Cool! The blocks look different from the blocks now!

Hello Banana439monkey! It's so nice to see you! :D
I myself just finished a 24 hour programming competition. It was tons of fun for sure! Even though I didn't get any sleep, it was a great experience. Some of the problems on there were super difficult, which got me really thinking.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 00:16, 23 October 2016 (UTC)

I think that Scratch 3.0 should be protected because there is an edit war and there shouldn't be the custom block picture.

Link possibly harmful

Hi, I found a link on this page: https://wiki.scratch.mit.edu/wiki/Experimental_Viewer. It is in the Removal part. When the download is clicked it says it can harm a computer, I'm not sure if this should be removed?
Pig9992005 (talk | contribs) 18:58, 22 December 2016

The first external link is to Scratch; that's trustworthy. The second external link is to subversion.assembla.com, and I know that Assembla (Wikipedia) is a trustworthy company. I think it's just your browser acting up.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 01:16, 23 December 2016 (UTC)
I decided to do some IP digging, trace-routing, and investigating on them. They look OK.

The Wiki Times

Hey Ernie! So I am working on starting up The Wiki Times (the Scratch wiki newspaper) back up and I was wondering if you'd be able to help with it.
Also, I will start working on the Spanish Wiki again.

AghaCool (talk | contribs) 21:33, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

I'm actually down for that. What rules are there, and how would I contribute?
Thank you for the good news on the wiki! Is there something I could do to help make editing easier?
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 07:19, 17 January 2017 (UTC)

Hello :)

I'm new to the wiki and I have a few questions for you. So first whats a user page? And whats a sandbox page?
Skuller06 (talk | contribs) 10:11, 16 January 2017 (UTC)

Hey Skuller06. :)
A user page is a page about you, for you. You get to put whatever you want in it. I like to be creative with mine.
A sandbox page is a page where you can experiment with page features to learn how these features work. CSS alone is a bit tricky.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 07:15, 17 January 2017 (UTC)

Add GCC

I noticed that when you revamped the Alternatives to Scratch page, you removed the GNU Compiler Collection among other items and added a warning to only add prominent alternatives. May I add GCC back or is it not significant enough?
Chibi-Matoran (talk | contribs) 02:11, 29 January 2017 (UTC)

The GCC is more of a code compiler, and less of a coding language. That's why it was initially removed.
However, if you see a nice section in the page to insert it back into, that would work. It does sound at least somewhat notable.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 22:44, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
In the tex-based programming section, should I add another column called "implementations?"
Chibi-Matoran (talk | contribs) 02:12, 4 February 2017 (UTC)
I'm against that on the basis that the purpose of the page is, partly, to help Scratchers find places to go to after Scratch. By having a language first approach where possible, Scratchers have a more concrete lead.
Edit: On second though, gcc is the main way to compile c/c++ code. It should be mentioned.
An extra column would make the table more confusing. A "compiler" section would be cleaner.
The simplest solution would be to mention the "Command Line" under column "Editor(s)", and mention gcc briefly.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 06:44, 4 February 2017 (UTC)
I'm not completely sure... I think that people who want to move on from Scratch should understand the process of building a program instead of being pampered by an IDE. Also, the IDE may not necessary ship with a compiler or interpreter, so a list of implementations could be needed.
Chibi-Matoran (talk | contribs) 23:15, 4 February 2017 (UTC)
Okay, a new section would be good. Constraining everything to the current layout was constraining.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 05:57, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
I added implementations and noticed that you deleted Scheme. May I add it back?
Chibi-Matoran (talk | contribs) 21:42, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── I found a resource called the TIOBE index that measures programming language popularity.

According to TIOBE, Scheme ranks #35 in programming language popularity. As for the alternative languages to Scratch, all are either related to Scratch, or are ranked in the top ten in TIOBE. (HTML is not listed, but is obviously very significant. Also, Lua ranks #28, which makes me wonder if that should be removed...)

Another indexing system, called PYPL, also lists all alternatives in the top ten. (HTML, Lua, ActionScript, Logo, and Scheme being exceptions.)

From this information, Scheme is not prominent enough to warrant being on the page.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 00:42, 10 February 2017 (UTC)

I believe that Scheme is significant because it influenced Snap! and is used by a famous computer science textbook called Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs. (Some of Snap!'s example projects are based on Scheme programs from that book.) Also, Scheme is popular among some ATers.

About the changes you made to Template:E

I believe that the cat face is done with "=^..^=" not just ^..^
Kenny2scratch logo.jpg kenny2scratch  Talk  Contribs  Directory
00:28, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

I am aware that the cat face is done with "=^..^=", however the equal signs cause massive trouble for mediawiki. Mediawiki thinks we're trying to assign template parameters. It's also why the =), =D, ect... emoji aren't supported by the template. Supporting ^..^ is a fair compromise.

On a different note, what's that Skype chat you have like and what do you usually talk about?
Kenny2scratch logo.jpg kenny2scratch  Talk  Contribs  Directory
05:38, 26 May 2017 (UTC)

On the Skype chat we talk about various issues. We talk about S:CONTRIB, Wiki Wednesday, account requests, the community, Mediawiki's API, etc... Sometimes we do stray and Jvvg shares his pictures, which are really good.
Thanks! Right now I'm helping with maintenance for the international wikis. Oh, the fun you get when server providers are switched.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 03:44, 29 May 2017 (UTC)

What's it like being a massive interwiki editor?
Kenny2scratch logo.jpg kenny2scratch  Talk  Contribs  Directory

Jvvg likes to take pictures of subway systems. It's one of his hobbies.
Being an interwiki editor is a little bit strenuous, and a little bit fun. I perform some server work, and mistakes do happen.
At the same time, I like coding for the interwikis, and sometimes surprises happen (ex: @kunwoo2005). :)

Request for when creating pages

When creating a page for protection purposes, can you put in a placeholder that's better than a single character? (I'm looking specifically at Scratch Wiki:Elections/June 2017/Results.) Thanks.
Kenny2scratch logo.jpg kenny2scratch  Talk  Contribs  Directory
10:13, 23 June 2017 (UTC)

When creating a page, the minimum text required is 1 character.
At the time, I hadn't settled on what to put on the page. Hence, the single character.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 17:13, 23 June 2017 (UTC)

Kenny2scratch logo.jpg kenny2scratch  Talk  Contribs  Directory

True. However, at the moment, the page history can't be edited to use that.

Deleted Page

I recently started using the Scratch Wiki again and I looked at my past page 'Abbreviations in Scratch' which was moved to another page titled 'Forum Terminology'. You claimed that Scratch twins-691 (Us) was the only contributor and you deleted the page. I don't think I was the only contributor. Shortly, after I created 'Abbreviations in Scratch', it was requested that I move the page to 'Forum Terminology'. In order for that to be requested, doesn't that mean that someone else originally made the page. So please explain the reason you deleted 'Forum Terminology' more thoroughly. I don't fully understand it.

Scratchtwins-691 (talk | contribs) 14:42, 23 July 2017 (UTC)

Hi Scratchtwins-691! The message "and the only contributor was "Scratchtwins-691")" is the automatically generated message by Mediawiki. I did not write that.
As for why Scratch Wiki: Forum Terminology was deleted, it's because the page was moved to Forum Terminology, hence Scratch Wiki: Forum Terminology was outdated.
As for Abbreviations in Scratch, the original is still there.
Do you have more questions?

Interwiki Bot seems not to work properly

Dear Ernie, Your User:InterwikiBot seems not work properly and I often added the missing interwiki links manually. This time I don’t want to add it again but give you the links as an example to find out what’s the problem, fix it and let the bot do the work it is created for. See for example:

I think there are enough interwiki-links to create all the missing links, but the bot did not create it.

MartinWollenweber (talk | contribs) 14:20, 29 October 2017 (UTC)

For your information, Emoji is a redirect - maybe you mean Scratch Emoji? I see that the Nederlands interwiki was added to that page, but only by EH7meow, and not InterwikiBot.
I think I can guess why: the other wikis have a higher MediaWiki version than this wiki, so things that work on those wikis do not work here. Another reason why we need an upgrade :) but that won't happen soon.

About InterWikiBot in the Test Wiki

Hi ErnieParke. I have a problem due to InterWikiBot. In the Test Wiki, InterWikiBot isn't working from two years and a lot of article is now outdated so I updated some articles manually. Real English Wiki has still a lot of outdated articles, I know, but also I'm wondering; why InterWikiBot isn't working correctly between the interwikis? This bot stopped due to an error, or somebody stopped it intentionally?

Dear Ernie, User:InterwikiBot/GA Stats seems to be not updated since September 24. Did you know and can you fix it? Thank you very much in advance! ~~

GA_Stats

On the page User:InterwikiBot/GA Stats where it says "If there is an issue, please contact the bot's owner." the part that says bot's owner does not link to you it links to it's self.

ErnieParke has been inactive for over a year, and InterwikiBot has not updated that page since September 2020.

See the topic above. The IWB code base is quite unmaintained since a long while, and throws problems from what I learnt in the past. It'd be really amazing if someone would rewrite it again...
However, I believe some bureaucrats already have access to the GA dashboard, and henceforth it's not necessary for them to have such a bot. I don't think an average user would care about those statistics either, but would be somewhat insightful.

Very late edit for the future readers: I totally forgot to mention that recently some courts in the EU have decided that GA is privacy-invasive (note that Scratch Wiki servers are hosted in Germany, which is a part of EU). Read more here. And hence, it's been decided that removing GA would be better for legal issues. However, as GA had been in use since a long time, it's hard to replace.

I think the data would be very useful to normal users (especially me), as I can see what articles users are reading a lot so I can focus on improving those.

We unfortunately had to disable Google Analytics due to concerns with GDPR compliance.

Sorry about the situation. The past two years have been an adventure medically to say the least.

The IWB codebase is throwing errors but I'm working through it. I've been wanting to rewrite it in Python, but for now, this is what we have.

It's important to note that IWB does more then publish GA statistics.
