I deleted a redirect you made

Hi there! I deleted a redirect you made (Terms of use), since the Terms of Use and Community Guidelines on Scratch are different (for what the Terms of Use is, see Terms of Use). The reason I didn't just change the redirect to go to Terms of Use is that we're not supposed to make redirects that simply change if a letter is uppercase or lowercase from the original page. I hope you understand; if you still think it's needed, feel free to re-create the page. Thanks, and thanks for all your amazing contributions to the Scratch Wiki!

Some people may want to refer to an old archive of your talk page, but they won't be able to find it. You can help people find it by linking it on your main talk page. P.S I know I'm not an Admin or Bureaucrat XD

Please stop making unnecessary redirects.

Hey. Just gonna ask you to stop making unnecessary, and/or obscure redirects. To be realistic, they are pretty annoying, and will not be used often, if at all, therefore rendering the redirect as unnecessary. Tip: If you don't think people are going to use the redirect often, consider it rendered unnecessary!

About your topic on blob's talk

Hi! I saw your topic on blob's talk page (linked in title). It's nice that you want to let blob know that what he wrote has problems, but there's a few problems with what you wrote too.

  • You're being very rude and borderline insulting when you point out the flaws.
    • "In the article you wrote, the language is hard to read, there is no clarity, and the formatting has been broken" - that's very offensive!
    • You then proceed to dryly list out problems with the article, half of which are invalid:
      • "At the bottom of each section, there is a space that looks like a talk page" - that's because it's supposed to be a mini-talk page! That space is there for people to discuss the bug.
      • "In the "::" syntax section, the explaining text just states that the "::" syntax doesn't work and nothing else, and the picture preview doesn't go much further" - that's because that bug was fixed years ago, and nobody updated that section.
      • "In the "If" section, the bug is untrue. You are supposed to use if () then. The "then" was added in Scratch 2.0." - that's because the bug was reported in the 1.4 days!
  • Blob's been inactive on here for a very long time. His last edit was in 2016.

Try to be nicer when you're letting people know some of the problems with what they've made! Instead of saying mean things like "your article is hard to read and it's broken and there's six more problems" say something like "your article looks really good! There's just a few problems I'd recommend you fix". Also, look into things more in-depth before you go yelling at people. Half of the flaws you gave were not flaws, and if you had read the article and tried to find out why they're incorrect before yelling at blob that it's incorrect, you'd have realized that it's just outdated.

So, I have a couple of recommendations for your future behavior:

  • Be more polite and, most importantly, nice when you're telling people about shortcomings.
  • Find out as much as you can before telling people what to do - there is almost certainly something that isn't obvious on the surface.

If you can't do that, then the Wiki might not be the best place for you. If you can, then please do! It'll make you be a lot friendlier, and consequently make you seem like a better person to approach for help or advice.

Try not to spam

Hi, I see you're playing with Wiki formatting! Having fun?

Thing is, you're using a separate edit for every test, when you could just be using the "Show preview" button. You're also clogging up the RC, a lot. Please use the "Show preview" button instead of submitting edits unless there's some function of MediaWiki you're testing that requries an edit. Thanks!

Banana439monkey.png banana439monkey (Talk | Contribs | Scratch | Edits (2,650)) 17:13, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
It's whitelisted because it's a page that tends to get spammed by new users, but it's still better not to spam-edit it, especially if you're not new.

PLEASE DON'T make several edits in a short amount of time

So uh... if you look at Special:Diff/204196/204385, it says "13 intermediate revisions by one user not shown." That's waaaaay too many edits in the same day. Please use the show preview button! If you don't like how it has to load the page again, there's a "live preview" option here. A full 100% of those edits would never have happened if you had used show preview - there would have instead been a single edit combining all of those 13 different ones. Just remember to preview. Thanks.

Don't do things until you know exactly how they work

Hi, I saw you added a bunch of __NOEDITSECTION__s to S:CT (the page, not the redirect). It looked like you were trying to disable editing a certain section. However, it seems like you didn't do your research, because that behavior switch disables section editing for the entire page, no matter where it's placed.

In the future, before trying something out on a real page (or even a real wiki) where real damage can be done, I recommend you test things on a sandbox or even on a separate MediaWiki installation. This'll let you know of the risks and side-effects involved before you try it on a real page. If you can, avoid edits altogether until you're sure of the effects - I always run new bot features under "confirm edit" mode before actually using it to spot any potential errors.

Thanks!

Changing the title of the Snap! page

Hi.

BYOB, the precursor to Snap!, was a Scratch mod, but Snap! itself is a complete rewrite, in Javascript, and shares no code with any version of Scratch. That's why the title is "programming language" even though the BYOB title was "Scratch mod."

Of course Snap! is heavily influenced by Scratch, and we have adopted some of the new features of Scratch as 2.0 and now 3.0 were released. Similarly, Scratch has been influenced by Snap!, most notably in the addition of custom blocks in 2.0. That's why Snap! remains relevant to the Scratch wiki. But "modification" is wrong.

Thanks.

Discussion moved from userpage

Hello. I have been asked to correct the record concerning your comments. More than 90% of the Wiki's visitors have never been on the Wiki before (i.e. are New Users). We are constantly pulling in new traffic from all different sources. If you have any suggestions for how you want to improve traffic feel free to share your thoughts on the community portal.
Makethebrainhappy (talk | contribs) 20:30, 15 September 2018 (UTC)

Is the record how many visitors or how many views?
CrazyBoy826-Icon.png CrazyBoy826 Talk | Contribs | Scratch account 01:56, 16 September 2018 (UTC)
Moved discussion here from userpage because New Wikians can't edit userpages.
Kenny2scratch logo.jpg kenny2scratch  Talk  Contribs  Directory
03:51, 16 September 2018 (UTC)
I get to see much more than those two numbers. I'm allowed to differentiate by pageviews, sessions, users and new users (i.e. someone who has never visited the wiki before).
Makethebrainhappy (talk | contribs) 14:10, 16 September 2018 (UTC)
(Fixed indenting) That means about 20-60% of the Wiki's pageviews are registered users. I will stay, but I won't be as active due to time constraints.
CrazyBoy826-Icon.png CrazyBoy826 Talk | Contribs | Scratch account 02:03, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
How do you know 20-60% is from registered users? a) 20-60% is a very wide range, 講咗等於冇講. b) Do you have access to specific details? I don't think so. Please research the facts before posting them, especially on an international website like this. Tip: in some countries (most notably the UK), libel is illegal. Libel is a published false statement that defames someone or something. Your statement about most traffic coming from logged-in users was false, and since you published it on your userpage it was by definition published, and it was obviously defaming. Moreover, some people believed your libelous statement and you've caused Wiki activity to generally decrease because of it.
I'm being uncharacteristically harsh here because I want you to fully appreciate the amount of potential damage you have inflicted. I want your word that you will fully research your facts before posting them.
As a side note, from what I can see, you were operating under the misconception that IWB's "sessions" graph represents the number of views from logged-in users. I don't know if that was the case, but that's just my best guess. If it is the case, let me assure you that the sessions graph (at least in my understanding) represents the number of users "logged in" (i.e. visiting with some frequency, not necessarily actually logged in to the wiki), not the number of views from logged in users. Does that make sense?
But in any case, your word.
Kenny2scratch logo.jpg kenny2scratch  Talk  Contribs  Directory
12:22, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
I apologize. I knew that the sessions log was not just user accounts. At the time I thought that most users would have many sessions and definitely many pageviews, so one session isn't exactly one user. Also, what are things in your comments like 講咗等於冇講?

CrazyBoy, thank you for your apology. 講咗等於冇講 is a Cantonese expression that I wanted to use but couldn't translate, so I just used it directly. It literally means "said equals not said", meaning what you said had no meaning.

07:07, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
If 90% of our traffic comes from New Users, then obviously 20-60% is not realistic. "New Users" can't actually be editors because they are visiting the website for the first time. Just saying. ;)

About Scratch Wiki:3.0 Articles/Stack Block

So, let me clarify what I mean by "the blocks are bad". I'm not talking about the colors being wrong. I'm talking about the inputs being incorrect and the capitalization being atrocious. You CANNOT directly translate page titles into block names! It only works syntactically with scratchblocks because that's a bug. There is NO block that looks like this in any version of Scratch: Add () to (). Only this: add [] to [ v].

I've protected the page temporarily. If you have any edits unrelated to the blocks, leave them here and I'll make them, until the protection expires.
Kenny2scratch logo.jpg kenny2scratch  Talk  Contribs  Directory
04:01, 26 September 2018 (UTC)

The capitalization was copied from the old page and I was careful to not make any mistakes on the inputs.
CrazyBoy826-Icon.png CrazyBoy826 Talk | Contribs | Scratch account 02:34, 27 September 2018 (UTC)
The capitalization of the old page is wrong too, in that case. And the inputs had mistakes, no matter how careful you were. Again, if you want to edit the paragraph before the blocks, you can tell me what to change (until the protection expires).
