My own personal welcome
Welcome to the Scratch Wiki! I look forward to the useful edits you'll make and hope you'll have fun here. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me on my talk page, where you can talk about the Wiki, get my help with templates, or even ask personal questions, and more! If you need quick help with wiki markup, take a look at Scratch Wiki:Cheatsheet. You might want to go to Category:Articles to Expand to find pages that need editing. I get my inspiration from Special:RecentChanges however, so looking at that helps too. See you around, -ShadowOfTheFuture-; |
Template aside, I'm really glad you're here. Wish you well!

For help with wikitext
I saw you said on your userpage that you have no experience with wikitext - for a tutorial of that, take a look at Help:Editing (or if you don't have time, Scratch Wiki:Cheatsheet). Actually, anything you need should be in the big welcome box at the top of this talk page :)

I know you say you can barely read or write Chinese, but...
你會說普通話?
I come from Hong Kong, and therefore I'm trilingual (English, Cantonese, Mandarin) and biliterate (English and traditional Chinese). It's always cool when I find someone else who speaks some form of Chinese. (Though I'm less ethnically Chinese than you are - I don't have Chinese parents.)
Anyway, I just wanted to drop by and say it's cool you can speak Mandarin. Also, don't worry about vocabulary - if you speak it often enough, you'll absorb vocabulary at a modest rate.

- Hi! (You... something. I can't read the rest. :P)
- You're from Hong Kong? Cool!
- Lol, I speak it all the time with my parents and yet my vocabulary's still limited to like 100 characters... I guess I just have to speak it in more circumstances when I can pick up new vocabulary.
-ShadowOfTheFuture- (talk | contribs) 00:26, 9 October 2018 (UTC)- (It's "you can speak Putonghua [Mandarin]?")
- Yeah, I go over my "where are you from" question in some more detail on my userpage (linked in my sig)
- Well, I guess you know some household vocabulary, yeah? That's more than me - I know a lot of obscure words, as well as classical Chinese words, and a few complicated ones, but I don't know the simple words, the ones for daily use. I don't think I know how you say "frying pan"!
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 00:31, 9 October 2018 (UTC)- I mostly just say stuff like "我要吃东西!" (我要吃東西 in traditional?) a lot, lol
-ShadowOfTheFuture- (talk | contribs) 00:40, 9 October 2018 (UTC)- Oh, yeah, you would write in simplified, wouldn't you? "I want to eat something"? :P Well, do you say anything else? You don't really know the language if you only know a single phrase, ya gotta understand the grammar and syntax. I do think you can speak it, but since this is text I can't ask for a demonstration :P
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 01:45, 9 October 2018 (UTC)- 我知道一点,但是我很多时候不用,所以我会忘记,让后我妈妈提醒我这么说一个词,让后我就又忘掉... (I probably completely butchered that sentence, to be honest I can't read at all)
- Basically, no I'm honestly not :P Yeah I can speak it, but if knowing a language means being able to recognize characters, then... lol I really don't (fifth edit for finding something else wrong in that sentence...) I mostly speak it with my parents.
-ShadowOfTheFuture- (talk | contribs) 21:58, 19 October 2018 (UTC)- *然後我媽媽提醒我怎麼說一個此,然後我就有忘掉 (though that's how it's written in traditional Chinese, so idk if 让后 is how you write "and then" in simplified).
- But that sentence does tell me that you do understand the grammar... do you have any opportunities to speak it besides at home?

Not that often, to be honest - some people I know at my school can speak it fluently, but we don't really talk to each other that often.
