Intellectual Precursors
The "intellectual precursors" section needs subsections on mesh networking (clearly related to the One Laptop Per Child mesh networking also from the Media Lab, but which came first?) and nestable sprites (an independent invention by Jens afaik, but with interesting parallels to the nestable line segments on the General Turtle Inc. 2500 Logo computer).
This may be more than people want to know, but I think it's always a good idea to be clear about the provenance of ideas. —Brian Harvey (talk) 00:18, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
- I think you've used one too many big words for my brain :P
- intellectual precursors
- subsections
- mesh networking
- nestable sprites
- independant invention
- interesting parallels
- nestable line secments
- provenance of ideas

Block Pictures
Maybe someone could upload some pictures of blocks made in BYOB? I don't have it, so I can't. But could somebody else?
- Done —Brian Harvey (talk) 18:58, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Redirects
Could/should I make a redirect from "Lambda Calculus" (or maybe just "Lambda") to the first class data subsection in the BYOB article? "First class data"? —Brian Harvey (talk) 23:40, 1 September 2010 (UTC)
Title
The title "Build Your Own Blocks (BYOB) (Scratch Modification)" appears to be excessively long. Would anyone have a problem with moving it to "BYOB (Scratch Modification)"? Even the main BYOB website calls it BYOB.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 03:31, 21 February 2011 (UTC)
- Well, "Build Your Own Blocks" is the correct term for it. :/
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 04:28, 21 February 2011 (UTC)- There's a Wikipedia article called Night of the Day of the Dawn of the Son of the Bride of the Return of the Revenge of the Terror of the Attack of the Evil, Mutant, Alien, Flesh Eating, Hellbound, Zombified Living Dead Part 2: In Shocking 2-D, so to be honest this title isn't that long... Also, as Jonathanpb said, Build Your Own Blocks is the correct term, and we prefer to use the correct terminology on the wiki...
WeirdF (talk | contribs) 08:02, 21 February 2011 (UTC)- And there are redirects from BYOB, Build Your Own Blocks, BYOB (Scratch Modification), and Build Your Own Blocks (Scratch Modification). (Or will be, soon.)
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 11:39, 21 February 2011 (UTC)- I know this may seem a little weird, but doesn't BYOB stand for "Bring your Own Beer"?
Dazman (talk | contribs) 19:10, 15 March 2011 (UTC)- It does commonly mean that, yes. But I don't think it matters that much. I mean loads of words and abbreviations will have other meanings, which are often extremely inappropriate (not so much in this case, but "Scratch" has some inappropriate meanings). You can't really avoid it...
WeirdF (talk | contribs) 20:15, 15 March 2011 (UTC)- What bad meanings could scratch have?
Dazman (talk | contribs) 23:52, 15 March 2011 (UTC)- This is the official Scratch Wiki, and I believe it has similar rules to the main site. Posting inappropriate content that people of all ages could see is not a good idea, is against the rules, and would probably result in a ban.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 01:45, 16 March 2011 (UTC)- And we don't want to break the wiki's clean record of no bans :D

Adding BYOB
I'm adding that the name is changing to "Snap," because of what BYOB stands for. Should I put "Bring Your Own Beer?"
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 05:15, 8 April 2011 (UTC)
- This is on a — mainly — kids' website...
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 05:17, 8 April 2011 (UTC)- Grr. This is why we're changing the name: because of a few people bending way over backward. "Beer" is not a four-letter word, despite having four letters. :) Nobody seems to have noticed that "BYOB" (in its pre-Jens meaning) doesn't mean "go get plastered"; it means "the host of this event is not providing alcohol, but won't kick you out if you bring some for yourself."
Bharvey (talk | contribs) 19:09, 15 May 2011 (UTC)- You shouldn't have to change the name just because of this D: But yeah, Scratchers tend to overreact...

- …What does that have to do with this?
Jonathan50 (talk | contribs) 06:28, 27 June 2016 (UTC)- What does what have to do with what?
Bharvey (talk | contribs) 06:40, 27 June 2016 (UTC)- What does the fact that Scratch is a kid's website have to do with whether or not @Scimonster should have done what @Scimonster asked if they should do?
Jonathan50 (talk | contribs) 06:53, 27 June 2016 (UTC)- Oh. He was suggesting that we therefore shouldn't mention alcoholic beverages.
Bharvey (talk | contribs) 07:08, 27 June 2016 (UTC)- What is wrong with mentioning alcoholic beverages?
Jonathan50 (talk | contribs) 07:51, 15 September 2016 (UTC)- I suppose it's not the best thing to discuss on a children's coding website. Also, I'd like to point out that this thread is over 5 years old.
Hamish752 (talk | contribs) 09:17, 15 September 2016 (UTC)- I don't get why... Mentioning alcoholic beverages isn't going to make them drink alcoholic beverages.
- Wow, that's a long time.

"A very strange block"?
I'm not sure that "strange" (and "odd" in the next entry) is quite how I'd choose to describe lambda. How about "powerful"? :)
Also, "ChoiceOrExpressionArgMorph in Squeak" (for the LIST block) doesn't fit the tone of the other block descriptions; it's kind of intimidating for what's really a very simple block!
Bharvey (talk | contribs) 08:33, 2 June 2011 (UTC)
- That's a lambada? If you want, you can change it...
- Jut removed that.

Scimonster (talk | contribs) 11:05, 6 July 2011 (UTC)- I know dat :P
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 11:15, 6 July 2011 (UTC)- I understand some because Brian gave me personal tutorials on the forum, but, I don't think we can do it like that. :P
- HEY THAT'S WHAT WE NEED!! The Scratch Extension! We could have a tutorial that goes at a slow pace, so hopefully people can understand! :D

Title
Something about having two parenthesis text in the title doesn't really settle with me :P. I think it's weird that there's the "(BYOB)" in the title when the article says in the first sentence, "Build Your Own Blocks — often referred to by its acronym, BYOB — is ..." Do you guys think that perhaps the "(BYOB)" should be removed from the title?
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 04:25, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

Information
Snap 4.0 just came out, by the way.
3sal2 (talk | contribs) 19:01, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
- Erm, it's only still in alpha stage.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 19:03, 6 May 2012 (UTC)- True, but here's the page. I know it may not necessarily count, but the page with the experimental version was moved.
3sal2 (talk | contribs) 16:41, 20 May 2012 (UTC)- I think that was just because they started marketing to a wider audience. Like, the 2.0 prototype used to be on jiggler.media.mit.edu before moving to alpha.scratch.mit.edu. The new one is more suited to a larger audience.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 16:49, 20 May 2012 (UTC)- Yeah, our hypothetical schedule is beta in June, release in (late) August, but we're going to make it only in the sense that something has to be ready for classes starting the last week of Aug. It probably won't have the OOP stuff by then, so there will be a 4.1 before we're back to 3.1 features.

Content
This page and a few others require cleanup. I was suggesting calling this action to combat difficult-to-manage editing guideline violations Operation: Wiki Standards or Operation: Cleanup for more general stuff.
3sal2 (talk | contribs) 00:36, 2 March 2014 (UTC)
- @Mathfreak What in particular did you find problematic about this page that you added the {{Wiki Standards}} flag?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 12:29, 20 April 2014 (UTC)
Does this page really relate to scratch?
I'm not really sure if this page and all the other pages on BYOB really relate to scratch and if everyone agrees with me I want to ask for this page to be deleted can I have your opinion before I ask please?
Rohanite (talk | contribs)
- Well, it certainly relates to Scratch in my opinion. Blocks, based off of Scratch, I believe that the creators of snap have Scratch accounts, etc etc. Not exactly the wiki's best and most up-to-date article though, it just needs revision.
Scratchifier (talk | contribs) 21:06, 15 March 2015 (UTC)
Cool!
This is very interesting, telling me of a corner in Scratch I never even knew existed. This page should be kept on the Wiki.

There's a screenshot above the Page Contents that puts the whole page off a bit weird.
Should we move it after the Contents instead?
