Forum Topics
Hi guys! I have a question about the forum topics. Should we change the dates of when it first opened to the dates of the first topic? Or is that already done? Also, should we include the first forum topic of each forum? NYCDOT [ Talk Page | Contributions | Directory ] 21:55, 1 July 2018 (UTC)
- I disagree, but even if I did, how do you intend to find the first created thread in a subforum, given that they will get bumped around a bit?
Jokebookservice1 (talk | contribs) 00:12, 2 July 2018 (UTC)
- I wasn't saying that we must add it. It was just a thought.

What I am trying to say is that for the forum pages, should we add the exact dates of the official opening, if we know it? And should we include the first forum topic of each forum?NYCDOT [ Talk Page | Contributions | Directory ] 13:01, 2 July 2018 (UTC)
- If I hadn't read what you said, I wouldn't have replied. I said "what are you talking about" because I didn't understand what you wrote on top.
- I think the exact date created is too easy to get wrong and too hard to get write to merit inclusion in forum pages. The forum could have been open for days before anybody noticed it.
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 13:02, 2 July 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, that is true that the exact date is very hard to get, even harder that the original guys (Lucario, JSO, Veggieman001, etc.) are gone. Do we think we could get the month from a ST member? And maybe even the first topic?

Translating Japanese articles into English
Hello! I'm an admin in Japanese Scratch Wiki. In that wiki, we have some articles that English Wiki doesn't have. (Of course, some can't be, due to the strict S:NOSP!)
- ja:音量を使ってScratchを制御する (Control Scratch via Loudness Block)
- ja:Some Blocks (An early extension of Scratch 3.0, which is removed later.)
- ja:画像のホスト/cubeupload.com (How to Use Cubeupload.com)
- ja:商標の方針 (Trademark Policy)
Please discuss whether they are useful. Thank you! Apple502j Talk/Activities 2,243edit 22:54, 15 July 2018 (UTC)
- Cool articles! I definitely think we should add the "Some Blocks" one; since it was a Scratch 3.0 extension just like the pen extension or the music extension, it's just that it was removed.
- I think the cubeupload one might work well on the Wiki - or at least as a section in Image Hosting.
- I think we could possibly add the Trademark Policy one - after all, we have articles for the Privacy Policy, Terms of Use, and Community Guidelines.
- Could you please explain the first one a bit more? Thank you.
- Anyway, thanks for pointing these out - in my opinion most, if not all of them, could be good articles on the English Scratch Wiki as well as the Japanese one!

Uploading ScratchBlocks files
I can't upload .sb2 or .sb3 files, even though I can upload the original .sb files. There's also the issue where I can't ignore the 'empty file' warning when uploading an 'sb2' file. 1a3c5e7g9i(Talk|Contributions) 22:15, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
- An .sb .sb2 or .sb3 is a scratch project file. If you want to use scratch block like this:
When GF clicked
then you use it as if you were using in the scratch fourms. You can also us this to help you make them as well: https://scratchblocks.github.io/Jakel181 (talk | contribs) 16:49, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
- I want users to download a project, not to painstakingly copy it block by block. The sb3 I'm uploading has some blocks you can't easily duplicate with ScratchBlocks.
1a3c5e7g9i(Talk|Contributions) 02:19, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
- It's much better, usually, to painstakingly copy it block by block, however. Downloading someone else's files and modifying them doesn't teach you as much as re-making the script yourself and attempting to understand it as you do so. A 3.0 scratchblocks is coming, and once it's out we'll use it.
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 12:22, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
- So if my project has 147 unique, lengthy scripts and utilizes sprites, it's more beneficial to duplicate it manually, right?

- @CrazyBoy Reproducible, using 68.0.3440.106 (Official Build) (64-bit) on Windows 10, Vector skin. From what I can tell, it's a problem just with Vector, which no updates are going to be made for that skin because it's a risk you wish to take when using the skin. Ken wishes to focus on updating the page if there's an issue with his own skin, SWS. Also, please provide your skin, browser, browser version, operating system (and build may help, if using Windows, press the Windows key and R at once and enter winver. It should be there) and resolution when reporting styling glitches.

I'm not ignoring issues with Vector because it's not my skin; they're not as important because anonymous users don't use Vector and can't set it to that. Styling problems mostly only require operating system and browser versions; occasionally resolution is also important. kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 03:09, 20 August 2018 (UTC)
- Okay, I've tweaked the widths of the scratchwikiframes, which for me on Vector (same browser and resolution specs) doesn't cause the Featured Images box to block the FA and TSW boxes. Does it work for y'all as well?

Other Language Tutorials
Created - more discussion goes on the project talk page.
Ken and I have agreed that there is a lot of potential in creating tutorials in other programming languages which compare the syntax of that language to Scratch. We are roughly aiming for ten tutorials per language at the start of this tutorial. The pages could possibly receive a bar at the end of the front page (i.e. a try this out bar). We were thinking of having Python (3), C++, C#, C, Ruby, Java, PHP, JavaScript and we are looking for more suggestions. The suggested page hierarchy is (Programming Language)/(Tutorial Name) Makethebrainhappy (talk | contribs) 15:16, 24 August 2018 (UTC)

I forgot to mention: We have syntax highlighting now!
I installed SyntaxHighlight a few days ago, and I forgot to tell you about it. This will come in handy for the Language Tutorials.
- Usage
<syntaxhighlight lang="python3">import random print(random.randint(1, 5))</syntaxhighlight>
yields
import random
print(random.randint(1, 5))
and
Hello, <syntaxhighlight lang="javascript" inline>"world"</syntaxhighlight>!
yields
Hello, "world"
!
If the <pre> tag is being used for code, replace it with <syntaxhighlight>. Replace <code> tags with inline syntaxhighlight tags.

- Please do not edit other people's messages. People's messages are considered part of their userspace, which is to remain inviolate.
- As to your question, there are likely not going to be any new bureaucrats, as EWs do their current jobs well and bureaucrats mainly exist to transfer privileges, block users, and anything else unique to the usergroup that you can find in Special:ListGroupRights.
- Essentially, there are not going to be any new bureaucrats for a loooong while.
- Please post any new questions as a separate topic.

Changing minor edit box to major edit
All those times when you forget to click the minor edit box... Most of the edits on the wiki are major edits. So why not have the minor edit box already ticked and if it is a major edit untick it, or change the minor edit box to a major edit box. If you look at RC most nearly all edits are minor so that is why i am suggesting this change asqwde talk | contribs 12:59, 8 September 2018 (UTC)
- Ahem! There is a user preference in Special:Preferences that will do exactly that - check the minor edit box by default. I don't think everyone should be making minor edits by default (especially newer users - on Wikipedia anonymous users can't even make minor edits at all!). If you think your own edits will be minor by default, set your preferences that way (check the "Mark minor edits by default" box).

Like Wikipedia, the Scratch Wiki should have locking.
Full protection prevents editing by everyone except admins and EWs. Fully protected media files cannot be overwritten by new uploads.
Semi-protection prevents editing by New Wikans
Creation protection prevents a page (normally a previously deleted one) from being recreated.
Move protection protects the page solely from moving (renaming).
Upload protection prevents new versions of a file from being uploaded except by admins and EWs, but it does not prevent editing the file's description page.
Pending-changes protection means edits by unregistered and new contributors are not visible to readers until the edits are approved by an admin or EW.
Extended confirmed protection, also known as 30/500 protection prevents editing by users without three months and 500 edits on the English Wiki.
What do you think?
Whatsfordinner77 (talk | contribs) 04:23, 15 September 2018 (UTC)
- Correct me if I'm wrong, but we can already protect pages. I'm pretty sure that since our wiki is hosted by MediaWiki (?) we either can already do it or can but we're not using that features. I'd ask an admin or EW for more help on this one.
Redglitter (Talk ~ Contributions ~ 541 edits) 07:12, 15 September 2018 (UTC)
- This wiki indeed uses MediaWiki (we're not hosted by Wikimedia, but we use their software), so we already have full, semi, creation, move, and upload protection (though with different implications), and we don't intend to add pending-changes protection or extended confirmed protection.

Category:BYOB Images
I was just looking through Special:Categories and the eigtheenth one that shows up is Category:BYOB Images. Back in August, CrazyBoy826 moved it to Category:Snap! Images. However, there are still pages categorised undder this category. The edit summary included:

A question no one thought of before
I was looking around the Wiki when suddenly I came up with a problem: what if a user coincidently shares the name of a bot (but not connected to it) and decides to come on the Wiki? This is a very unlikely situation, but if it happened, the whole wiki would be scrambling for ways to fix the problem. What should we do to fix this problem, if the need ever arises? Userpages
Recently, I've seen a few newer wikians without userpages. I know that generally when a new account is created, a userpage is created with it. I don't know how to phrase this very well, but should I make a list of the users who don't have userpages, make them myself, or just leave it so they can create their own? Examples:
Biran4454,
HR18K,
Cris524.

- Userpages being created automatically was a bug, not a feature. (Well, the extension treats it as a feature but since we don't use the "biography" section it's a bug.) After the transfer, with jvvg's new version of CA, we could finally turn off automatic userpage creation. Also for some people their userpages were created by Krett12 and his "NoRed" movement, but that was stopped quickly.
- TL, DR: when a new account is created, it's not supposed to have a userpage. It's up to the user to visit their own userpage and find that it's not created.

Hello! I would like to suggest to add the category Category:Uncategorized. Why you may ask? Well even though Wiki Monitor reminds you to categorize pages sometimes you forget to add it. A bot (The one I am suggesting here)(Or WM) could add the Category:Uncategorized category and wiki editors can easily find what pages need to be categorized. Thoughts? - New users on Wikipedia can sometimes have literally no experience with the site, so they need a more experienced user to help them along; we have a much more strenuous account request process that ensures that new users already know some things about this wiki; therefore, mentoring is essentially unnecessary on this site, and if it is necessary usually one of the admins ends up watching specific users for a while.

- Three things:
- Make sure to sign your post after the whole thing with "~~~~", not just after the header.
- When linking to a page inside the Scratch Wiki or Wikipedia, you can use internal links instead of using the normal URL format. Use this syntax:
[[Wiki Page Name#Section (Optional)|Link Name]]
When linking to Wikipedia, add "Wikipedia:" before the page name. - Why not post this on the page's talk page so future people editing that page can see it?
- Thanks.

Having a list of explicit images isn't enough. To actually use WM Commons, we need to be able to censor any explicit images from being included at all, which is not possible with any of our current tech. I will not listen to any more arguments for using WM Commons files, unless you can point out a simple way to censor explicit images. Rejected

Why there was an IP ban
No, it wasn't a MediaWiki ban. Because the page title had a website domain in it, and I attempted to view it, I apparently triggered some sort of anti-commercial spam mechanism that caused me to be IP banned. The ban just got lifted (which is why I can talk to you now), but I've censored the page title for its misdeeds.
To be safe, in the future do not put other websites in page titles. kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 14:27, 8 October 2018 (UTC)

We can now use images from other wikis, on other wikis!
You can now include images from any wiki, on any wiki! This means if a file exists on one wiki it can be included on any other. There's no special syntax to include cross-wiki images, it's just a normal file link. As an example, scroll to the bottom of my sandbox; The QR code there is actually a file on the Japanese wiki: ja:ファイル:ウェブサイトのQRコード.png! Note that the "File:" part has to be in the correct language for your wiki.
Enjoy! kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 14:29, 8 October 2018 (UTC)

I think that they will add alot of possiblites with Userboxes like WP. I'm not saying that they should be used beacuse its used on WP, but they will be handy for alot of users. What do you think? Whatsfordinner77|💬Talk|🔧Contribs|🐱Scratch 08:04, 11 October 2018 (UTC)

Scratch CDN links for images
These don't work. Seriously, there Scratch. I can understand Commons and WM being blocked, but why is Scratch CDN not working. This website is for hosting Scratch Project/Studio/PFP Images etc. This seems pointless. Ken, can you fix this? Whatsfordinner77|💬Talk|🔧Contribs|🐱Scratch 10:35, 19 October 2018 (UTC)
- Scratch CDN is not a wiki, so you need to use another way:
(see source)
- However, we do not recommend using this. It's not so hard to upload an image. And why do you need to use CDN?

Whatsfordinner77|💬Talk|🔧Contribs|🐱Scratch 21:54, 19 October 2018 (UTC)
- External images can't be resized. If you need resizing, upload it to the Wiki.
- (I should also clarify that "external" images are when you use direct image links to include image files; "external wiki" images are when you include images from another wiki with [[File:]] syntax.)

Hi! May someone remove the Italics from the SDS entry in the scratch news by replacing '' with " please. Jakel181 (talk | contribs) 16:21, 22 October 2018 (UTC)
- Actually, italics are often used to indicate quoting. Besides, in this particular case, the description spans multiple lines and therefore can't be quoted with normal quotes; the {{quote}} template is overkill.

Hello! I haven't been here in a while, and it's nice to be back. :) I just clicked "Random Page" and it brought me to the "Projects Loved By Scratcher's I'm Following" page. H: shortcuts for Help pages
I am suggesting that shortcuts for Help: pages to have shortcuts under the H: prefix.
An example would be H:BLOCK, which is meant to redirect to Help:Blocking users. Jammum (talk | contribs) 17:00, 26 October 2018 (UTC)
- I think short cut should say as "S:" as S stands for shortcut, If we use H: for a shout cut on help pages then we can use T for talk U for user, a letter for all the namespaces, and at that point there would be 15+ Different trypes of shortcuts to use and it would be confusing and hard to keep track.
Jakel181 (talk | contribs) 17:41, 26 October 2018 (UTC)
- You get this idea from Wikipedia, I presume? We don't have enough need for shortcuts to help pages to separate help shortcuts from project shortcuts, I believe. If we had many more help pages, with much more interest in them, then maybe we might consider adding help shortcuts.
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 03:06, 28 October 2018 (UTC)
- Firstly, I didn't get the idea from Wikipedia. Secondly, I think T: shortcuts and U shortcuts might be a bit spammy and unnecessary. Thirdly, I think S: does not stand for shortcut, I think it stands for the "Scratch Wiki:" namespace, as there is B: shortcuts for bots.
Jammum (talk | contribs) 16:55, 28 October 2018 (UTC)
- It is indeed true that S: stands for "Scratch Wiki", but B: doesn't stand for any namespace, does it? Also, I think you missed jakel181's point: if we were to have another shortcut prefix for a specific namespace, that would open up the possibility of more prefixes for even more namespaces, causing clutter. Anyway, help pages are not referred to frequently enough for a special prefix to be necessary - if you need to create a help shortcut, use a plain S: shortcut.

Hi I created a reply template (Here) and I am wondering would it be something that you would use? If so would it be ok to move it to the template mainspace? @Ken Wouldn't it have to be built into the mw software to automatically tell someone that they were pinged? Also, if this template won't be accepted, then we could make it so that whenever our watchlist was changed, we would get a banner. Watchlist topic 12944qwerty Talk Contribs Scratch 22:55, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
- I'm not ken but I can certainly answer your questions.
- No, you can use a bot or an extension for detecting if you were pinged as wiki monitor can automatically tell if you added a signature to a post.
- As for the watch list question, I did a search and couldn't find any extensions or configuration variables, but it is not said it couldn't be created. :)
Something about the vector skin
When I was viewing kenny2scratch's userpage in the vector skin, I clicked on a link, where it went back to the normal skin. To fix this, I recommend that links when viewing in the vector skin to have ?useskin=vector at the end. Jammum (talk | contribs) 16:55, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
- That is because when you click on a vector link, the page and only the page you clicked on will be vector. If your default is the sw skin. So if you click on a link that is normal (No specified skin) even if you are viewing it in vector but your delfault is the sw skin then you will see the sw skin when you click on the link.
Jakel181 (talk | contribs) 20:29, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
- I think I understand you right... you mean that links to pages when viewing in a skin other than your set skin should have
?useskin=skin
? I.e. if you're viewing in another skin, links should not take you back to your set skin? - Good idea. Now is it worth the effort?
- Changing links on the server-side is likely the most elegant solution, but also the most difficult.
- Changing links with MW JS is hackier, but easier. Thing is, it also eats up processing power, especially when there are a lot of links. It's also difficult to discern what links are internal and what links aren't.
- If you want to preview in a certain skin, though, you can use my useskin.js file (add the line
mw.loader.load('https://en.scratch-wiki.info/w/index.php?action=raw&ctype=text/javascript&title=User:Kenny2scratch/useskin.js');
to your common.js file) which adds a dropdown that lets you choose what skin to preview in.kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 03:30, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

The server transfer: what it is and why the last try failed
So I want to clear up several things... Sorry I didn't bring this up before. (For the sake of making grammar work, I will speak in future tense here.)
What it is
There is another server transfer upcoming. (For those wondering what I mean by "another", see Scratch Wiki#Server Transfer.) The purpose of this transfer is as follows:
- To move the Wikis onto their own dedicated machines
- To give the admins more freedom and power on the servers
- To release us from the constraints and worries of being on someone else's company's server
For those who don't know:
- MartinWollenweber (talk | contribs) is the person who financially supports the Wikis. Currently, the Wikis live in a folder on his company's server.
- To prevent us from doing any potential harm, he only allows we admins to access the servers via FTP, which does not let us do any advanced configuration.
- I am an exception to this. I currently have command-line access on his company servers for the sake of preparing for the transfer.
Why it failed
I attempted to perform this transfer at 10:00AM (UTC) last Friday. However, the attempt ended up failing. I was presented with MySQL error 2013 (search it up for more info) when dumping the wiki databases to transfer to the new servers. There are two possible causes of this error:
- The database is corrupted (doesn't seem to be the case)
- The database is too large, and MySQL times out when reading from it (very likely)
When the next one is
We're not really sure on this one. We're still trying to arrange a time. But do be warned that while the transfer is ongoing, the Wikis will be set to "read-only" mode. This means nobody can make any database changes.
Questions?
Hopefully that explained most of everything. Any questions? kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 11:53, 7 November 2018 (UTC)

I would like to create a template for when a page needs its name to be changed.
Tarekzaki (talk | contribs) 18:09, 9 November 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for suggesting this idea. What would be the use of the template though? Why can’t you just move the page yourself? If it is move protected then that means the title is suitable, if you disagree you can bring it up on the CP. I don’t see the use for this.
No support!

Suggestion: Request for a new page.
Hi! I noticed that when you are logged in the wiki and search for a page that doesn't exist like Goldfish, it says: "Create the page "Goldfish" on this wiki!" but when you are logged out all it says is "There were no results matching the query." So my suggestion is instead of saying "There were no results matching the query." when logged out it should say "Request the page "Goldfish" on this wiki!" Thoughts? Random Page
I don't know if anyone else notices, but sometimes the random pages give the same pages multiple times. If we want more pages to be better and more improved, this should make sure that the random page gives a new page since, let's say, the past hour or two. Support? 12944qwerty Talk Contribs Scratch 22:47, 7 December 2018 (UTC)
- Random page is a feature built into MediaWiki, so it's not something we can just change on a whim. I also just opened it 15 times and didn't get any duplicates, so it was most likely a coincidence that you got the same page multiple times.

Active Users
The Active Users List shows people that are active from the last 30 days. The only flexibility is to hide bots and admins. I feel we could add a little more flexibility of seeing the active users from most active to least activeness instead of alphabetically. Thoughts? 12944qwerty Talk Contribs Scratch 15:23, 10 December 2018 (UTC)
- Special:ActiveUsers is built into media wiki directly, I don't see any configuration settings or MediaWiki interface pages for it. (Not to say that there isn't I just haven't found any) So this most likely would have to be done with an extension which is kind of impractical for us.

Step-by-Step publishing
In the editing section in preferences, there is a option for step-by-step publishing which adds the publish button on the top of the edit box. Image Needed Template
Hi everyone! I came up with an idea for a new template.
Sometimes I want to put {{citation needed}} next to something, but I can't, because what I actually need is an image - which I can't get hold of. Has any of this ever happened to you?
I made a template in my userspace called "Image Needed Template." Here it is:
What do all think? Do you think it could become a proper template?

Dedicated page for requests for admin/EW action
I propose that we create Scratch Wiki:Requests for Privileged Actions (WIP title) - basically, if something needs an admin or EW to handle it, post a message there instead of on one of the admin/EW's talks or on the CP.
Pros:
- Makes requests for privileged actions more public and easier for all admins/EWs to see.
- Clears up clutter on admin/EW talk pages as well as the Community Portal.
Cons:
- New page.
Thoughts? kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 13:34, 8 November 2017 (UTC)
- Any examples of what would required privileged actions that is not covered by a template (such as {{delete}})?

Purplewolves (talk | contribs) 19:02, 8 November 2017 (UTC)
- There actually is a template for protection but no-one uses it - they simply post on an admin's talk.
- As for other actions, it's true that tagging pages with {{delete}} guarantees that it'll be deleted sooner or later... good point.

KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 14:33, 9 November 2017 (UTC)
- @Apple502j: interwiki is only done by bureaucrats (i.e. Scratch Team members) on this wiki.
- @KrIsMa: I think we can just use both - it's always helpful to have multiple points of contact and if the categories for those templates have a large backlog we can post on that page too, instead of here.

New "Report" Extension
A new feature has been added to this wiki: It's an extension of MediaWiki made by Ken named Report. Users(who logged in) can use this to report vandalism/something against CGs. It keeps what you sent a secret, so only EWs+ can see the reports.
Okay, maybe you are interested in this. First, go to the history/difference page. Next, click "Report" of the revision you report. And then you can type the reason. If you have already reported one revision, you can't do it again for the same one.
EWs go to a page to handle them. This page is hidden for non-EWs.
AND IT IS MOST IMPORTANT THING! Don't abuse it. It can only make them angry. Of course, if you really found something illegal, you can use it.
Apple502j Talk/Activities 2,243edit 03:23, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
- This post is a bit incoherent, so let me reword it here:
- I've installed a new extension, simply called "Report". If you are logged in, a "report" link will appear next to every revision, like so:
- Clicking it will bring you to this page:
- After filling in a reason to report the revision, EWs and admins will see a message like this in Special:RecentChanges:
- Clicking that link brings us to a page listing current reports. Each report displays the revision it is reporting, and the user who reported it. There is also a link to look at a specific page about the report; on that page, admins can mark the report as "handled", so that it no longer shows up in the list.
- Do not abuse this feature. It is made for when you see something inappropriate that bypassed the abuse filter. If you report a revision that is perfectly acceptable, you'll get a verbal warning. As with most other transgressions, too many (how many is decided by admins) warnings will lead to a block.
- Ideally, this will never be used. In practice, it's probably going to be the case that it'll get used at some point. Use it when actually necessary; don't test it, either, I've done all the testing required on my own test wiki.
- All that aside, please do use it if you find something inappropriate; it'll help us keep the Wiki a safer place.
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 04:27, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
- If you are on the fence about whether something should be reported or not, go ahead and report it. We won't get "angry" if we don't see the case as having merit. This feature displays our continued committment to taking input from the community in addition to the New Users Recommendation portal.
