March Featured Images

Yes Resolved (since 20:52, 1 July 2021 (UTC))

Hello everyone! It's time to decide on featured images for March. If you have any suggestions, please leave them below.

What can I suggest?

You can suggest any image(s) on the English Scratch Wiki that have not been featured previously.

How do I tell if an image has already been featured?

It will have the featured template on it, shown as a star icon in the top right corner of the image page.

Is there a limit to the number of images I can suggest?

No. However, please don't suggest too many... :P

How do elections work?

Yes Resolved (since 02:33, 21 February 2021 (UTC))

So, I'm a bit confused about the Scratch Wiki elections. How do people vote? How is it decided when to hold them?
Jackson49 (talk | contribs) 23:12, 20 February 2021 (UTC)

See this page for a lot more information about elections. Here is a very brief overview:
Elections are held on an as-needed basis and there is no regular schedule. The need is determined collectively by the existing EW+ by asking ourselves if the active EW+ we have now is sufficient to keep everything running smoothly or if we think we need additional people to help us out. We also bear in mind that holding an election is often a weekslong distraction from actual article editing, so we try not to have elections more often than we have to.
People vote on an external site that allows you to log in with your Wiki credentials to cast a vote. You rank the candidates from first to last, and then whichever candidate has the best average ranking wins (we usually select the top two).
When we do hold an election, we announce on the Community Portal (i.e. here) well in advance letting people know about the dates everything will happen. Then we will allow candidates to nominate themselves, and once nominations close the existing EW+ will look over the list and determine who we think should run. Then the selected candidates will write speeches, and then people will vote.
We do not have any plans to host an election in the near future.

json Editing

 Unresolved (see all...)

Many pages have similar instructions on how to access the json inside sb3 and sprite3 files:

Page Steps Taught
Making Invisible Code extracting, opening, editing and recompressing
Hidden Blocks extracting, opening, editing and recompressing
JSON Tutorial extracting, opening, editing and recompressing
Scratch Lab#Custom Fonts extracting, opening, editing and recompressing
Layer (value)#Viewing the Specific Layer Value extracting, opening
How to Save a Project#Uploading a Project extracting, opening
Exporting and Importing#Scripts extracting, opening
Scratch File Format#Project Files extracting

This could be simplified by using templates with instructions for each step, so maybe such templates should be created.

How are "April Fools pages" made?

Yes Resolved (since 08:46, 2 March 2021 (UTC))

As that some pages have "April Fools Pages", I'm curious on making one. I am not sure how to make one. And I am curious on can I, as a new Wikian or even an Wikian, can make such a page. Do I need to be an Admin or EW? If I can make one, please inform me on the process. If I cannot, in what stage of Wikian do I have to be to make one? Thanks.
MitFieldatdawn (talk | contribs) 08:43, 28 February 2021 (UTC)

Any user can create an April Fools page. To make one, create a subpage of Scratch Wiki:April Fools, although AF pages must be corresponding to a page on the Scratch Wiki which is not a redirect or disallowed (see the link earlier in this reply to find the link to the list).
Jammum Icon.png Jammum (💬 Talk - ✍️ Contribs - 🐱 Scratch) 09:43, 28 February 2021 (UTC)
I also just want to add that we do have some rules for April Fools' pages (in the link in Jammum's reply), please make sure to read them before creating the page.

MitFieldatdawn (talk | contribs) 08:14, 2 March 2021 (UTC)
At the top of every April Fools page, add the AF template on it. It will mention the corresponding article for an AF page and adds a category to those joke pages.

Thumbnail issue has been (mostly) resolved

Yes Resolved (since 22:43, 1 March 2021 (UTC))

Hi everyone,

We have had an issue for a while where large files were causing the thumbnail generator to crash. I think I have resolved the issue, and have spot-checked large files I'm aware of and they seem to have properly-generated thumbnails.

Note that the existing policies about filesize are not changing, at least for now. Files larger than 200KB and larger than 1920x1080 (or equivalent number of pixels in a different aspect ratio) will still be blocked, as generating thumbnails for large images still has the potential to slow down the server and also cause issues for users with slow internet connections. Everyone is also still expected to compress images prior to uploading.

Hide 'Save changes' in the editor until Show Preview is clicked

 Unresolved (see all...)

This might not be possible, but I think the Save Changes button in the editor should be hidden until Show preview is clicked. If this is possible, this would decrease WikiMonitor warnings for editing too many times.

Apart from the possibility of this being a major problem, some users might be confused that the button is missing.
Jammum Icon.png Jammum (💬 Talk - ✍️ Contribs - 🐱 Scratch) 18:04, 2 March 2021 (UTC)

I think it is a good idea but I'm not sure if the change would be 100% necessary. There are some downsides but if someone thinks of a solution to those minor problems, then I think it is a very good idea.
Filmlover12 Icon 2.png Filmlover12 Talk Contribs Scratch 09:05, 3 March 2021 (UTC)
I've just had an idea. Well, one of the problems you said was that some users may be confused if the button is missing. Maybe, if it's possible, the button could still be there but not able to be clicked on until show preview is clicked. That way, users would still be able to see the button but not be able to press it.

RFC on Preview Warning

Yes Resolved (since 21:00, 12 March 2021 (UTC))

I have built a bit of sample JS code that will show a warning if pressing "Save changes" without previewing. You can see the code at User:Jvvg/previewWarn.js. I have done a cursory test and it seems to work (it by default ignores talk pages). It works similar to the existing sig warn tool and will show an alert if you try to press "save changes" without previewing. However, unlike the sig warn tool, all you have to do to bypass it is just close the alert and press "Save changes" again. The goal is to encourage users to preview changes to avoid having a lot of repeated edits to one page.

What are everyone's thoughts on enabling this globally? Also, if anyone has any ideas for how this could be improved, I would love to hear them.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 02:16, 7 March 2021 (UTC)

I think it's a good idea, but it would be kinda annoying if you just wanted to delete a space and you had to press the preview button
Leahcimto scratch profile picture.png leahcimto talkcontribsprofile 18:08, 7 March 2021 (UTC)
You don't have to necessarily press preview - pressing "OK" on the alert and just pressing "Save changes" again will let you save without previewing.
I personally would suggest adding a bypass on minor edits as well (though possibly disabling the bypass on the most egregious namespaces (though at that point it might not be worth having the bypass in the first place (just something to consider, then))).

Ahmetlii logo.gif ahmetlii  Talk  Contributions  Directory
20:12, 7 March 2021 (UTC)
I think this could help prevent edits to a single page littering Recent Changes, as it is way too easy to get a WikiMonitor notification for it. Additionally, I think edits should be blocked (the edit should be prevented from being submitted, not having the user being blocked) if it would trigger a WikiMonitor notification.
Jammum Icon.png Jammum (💬 Talk - ✍️ Contribs - 🐱 Scratch) 15:52, 8 March 2021 (UTC)

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────No, blocking edits would just make people mad. Oh, and how would you block the edits? AbuseFilter? Anyway, this could be useful but many people (including me lol) would just click OK every time.
Lovecodeabc Links: talk (new topic) | contribs (659) | directory 17:27, 8 March 2021 (UTC)

I don't think fully blocking edits is necessary, and doing so would either require some messy JS (that could be easily defeated) or using AbuseFilter (I'm not sure it's even possible to do this in AbuseFilter) or writing our own extension. I do plan to keep WikiMonitor in operation so users do get a notification if they continually disregard the warning.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 17:38, 8 March 2021 (UTC)
I'm seeing no major opposition, so I have enabled the preview warning. Please let me know if there are any issues or suggestions to further improve it.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 17:43, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
It looks like this does not always load properly due to some timing issues in loading the page. I will investigate further as time permits.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 17:52, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
Would this be enabled on edits that the user is using the visual editor?
Dogsmakemehappy (talk | contribs) 17:53, 10 March 2021 (UTC)
I did not test this on VisualEditor, but a cursory look indicates it would not affect VisualEditor since it does not use the same ID on the save button.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 17:58, 10 March 2021 (UTC)
I think it should only occur in your second edit in a time period, like 10 mins. It shuld be a browser message box (like the leave page without saving one)
Ideapad-320 (talk | contribs) 17:52, 12 March 2021 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── The message is a browser message, very similar to the one you get when leaving a page without saving. It would be much harder to implement checking for duplicate edits in JS, that would require making AJAX calls, while the basic preview warning was a very quick fix.

Report about Spoofing Vulnerability

Yes Resolved (since 17:10, 13 March 2021 (UTC))

TL;DR: A bug made it possible for someone to impersonate other users and request Scratch Wiki account. However, no account was abused (as far as we know), and it was fixed.

On March 13th (today), I, apple502j, discovered spoofing vulnerability in the Scratch-ConfirmAccounts3 extension for MediaWiki. MediaWiki is, as you may know, a software which is used to power this Wiki. The extension was made last year and powers Special:RequestAccount. There was a bug in the extension where usernames were not properly compared, when requesting accounts. For example, it was possible to request an account named 1234567890 by registering a Scratch user with zero-prefixed name (01234567890) or exponential notations (123456789e1) and using that account in the account verification, even if the user didn't own the account.

The CVSS3.1 score is 7.5 (High) by my calculation - CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N.

Unlike other vulnerabilities, this one did not compromise security of existing users. We also believe that no accounts were requested using this bug. This bug is now fixed.

Many articles on specific Reporter Blocks have paragraphs at the top with messages like:

This scratch wiki talk is about the block. For more information on the value this block reports, see Direction (value).

There could be an About the block template (or one with a similar name) to take a value's article's name as its argument, and create a paragraph with:

{{about|the block|more information on the value this block reports|{}}}

Such a template could be used on the pages:

Auto Delete Old News

I was just going to random pages in case they needed editing, and found the page on the guidelines for adding news. While I was looking over it, I saw that it said to delete news items more than a month old. I was just wondering, why do this manually when you can have a bot that will automatically delete it?
PokemonRocks07 (talk | contribs) 16:26, 16 March 2021 (UTC)

It looks like WikiMonitor does delete old news items.
Mlcreater (talk | contribs) 16:34, 16 March 2021 (UTC)
Currently we keep the news to the latest five items, and WikiMonitor automatically removes anything extra when updating the news (for adding the curator). Since we get a new curator every week, this means the news will never be much older than a month.

Expanding 3D projects

 Unresolved (see all...)

So it looks like a few users are creating more articles on 3D projects, so we should probably have a well-defined approach to this. We need to decide: what is worth including/not including, how will we organize them, what deserves its own article vs. being part of another article, and what amount of depth they should go into.

You have not previewed your changes warning

Yes Resolved (since 16:28, 30 March 2021 (UTC))

Whenever I update my profile page, it has the extremely annoying "you have not previewed your changes" warning. I can't seem to turn it off in the preferences. How do I turn it off?
HiPeeps124816 (talk | contribs) 15:38, 30 March 2021 (UTC)

The warning cannot be turned off. It serves to make sure people preview changes before submitting edits and avoid making a lot of repeated edits (which happens the most often on userpages by the way). The easiest way to avoid it is simply to preview your changes to make sure they look right. If you really don't want to, you can simply dismiss the dialog and hit save again.

Weekend Article

Yes Resolved (since 18:24, 2 April 2021 (UTC))

So I was looking at the rules for making a new page and I was wondering if Weekend is a notable enough project to have an article on the Scratch Wiki.
Evanzap (talk | contribs) 20:08, 30 March 2021 (UTC)

I would go with no, the only real importance of the project I'm are of is that it was the first project uploaded to the Scratch site (or at least the first one that's still there).
jvvg (talk | contribs) 20:48, 30 March 2021 (UTC)
A redirect to a section of Scratch Timeline which was created by me a few weeks ago was deleted a short time after it was created. So, it might not be notable enough to have its own article.
Jammum Icon.png Jammum (💬 Talk - ✍️ Contribs - 🐱 Scratch) 05:34, 31 March 2021 (UTC)
I have been wondering similar things. The rules say not to make articles for tutorials, but I have seen several, so what are the rules about that?
Zebrastripesagain (talk | contribs) 18:01, 31 March 2021 (UTC)
It is directly written in the rules that tutorials are allowed on the Wiki (though there are rules about what sorts of tutorials are allowed). I don't know where you saw in the rules that you shouldn't make them.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 18:37, 31 March 2021 (UTC)
I saw that, I was just wondering about kinds of tutorials. Because I have seen platformer tutorials which I had thought were not allowed.
Zebrastripesagain (talk | contribs) 17:07, 1 April 2021 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── The general rule for tutorials is they should not be overly specific. In my opinion (note that this is not official Wiki policy, just my personal opinion), platformers are general enough to merit a tutorial since platformer is a broad class of games. However, describing how to make a specific type of platformer would be too specific. The tutorials also should generic and not be tailored to how someone built a specific project, since that risks becoming an article about a specific project.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 17:48, 1 April 2021 (UTC)

I see your point, but I don't think it's notable enough either.
Jackson49 (talk | contribs) 20:02, 1 April 2021 (UTC)

Yes, you are allowed to put a welcome template on a new user's talk page. However, there is a limit of five templates per page (first come first serve), so if five other people have already left welcome templates on a given user talk page, do not add another one.

April Fools cleanup

Yes Resolved (since 01:10, 5 May 2021 (UTC))

Hi everyone,

A lot of the April Fools articles have started to become kind of bloated, as people just keep adding more and more onto them. Going forwards, I intend to start trimming them down, since keep in mind that the longer you make the article, the less likely people are to read the whole thing. As stated in the April Fools policy, EW+ do have the authority to act unilaterally on April Fools pages, and I will use this privilege as necessary. I also encourage others to help me in this endeavor by trimming articles (in general if something was already featured for this most recent April Fools Day, feel free to remove/replace it). Also, I would encourage everyone to use proper spelling, grammar, and Wiki formatting when writing April Fools articles, even if the content is supposed to be humorous.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 17:55, 4 April 2021 (UTC)

Also, another note: please stay on-topic. I know this sounds weird for joke articles, but please at least try to keep the content of the article related to a humorous version of the original article and don't go off on random tangents that aren't really related.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 17:57, 4 April 2021 (UTC)
I agree with most of this, but personally, I think that some of the articles have had too much cut out. For example, the page for the Scratch Cat has been cut to just two (very short) paragraphs.
Jackson49 (talk | contribs) 18:01, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
What I did at the time was just a first pass, and I was trying to work quickly (and not really able to take the time to look closely). Certainly some stuff can be added back, but immediately making the article nearly as long as it was originally isn't going to help.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 18:10, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
Alright. Thanks for the clarification.

Images of alerts

Yes Resolved (since 19:22, 5 April 2021 (UTC))

I recently noticed that this image was taken in dark mode (probably with an extension enabled). I want to upload a new version of the image, but without any extensions. How do I simulate such an alert? Should I edit the HTML to make a normal alert look like an extension alert? or should I break the rules deliberately (using an alt)? or is there anything else I can do?
PUNNAMOODU (talk | contribs) 12:21, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

I'd always wondered about that image, I didn't realise that it was taken in dark mode! I would say that if you can avoid breaking the rules (even on an alt) to get the new image that would be the best, after all, if you use an alt to tell other Scratchers to use browser extensions, some might end up downloading an unsafe one, and you might also set an example for New Scratchers that it's okay to advertise browser extensions on Scratch. Do you already have a normal alert that you could edit the HTML of? Additionally, I did come up with another idea - I don't know how authentic this would be, but someone could edit the existing image (using Photoshop or similar) to change the colours?
Redglitter Profile Picture Mini.gif Redglitter (Talk ~ Contributions ~ 541 edits) 13:19, 5 April 2021 (UTC)
I don't think editing an image would give an accurate representation. Also, I had an alert in my test account which I never felt like dissmissing. I will edit HTML to make it look identical. That would be okay, right?

Horizontal Blocks

 Unresolved (see all...)

The user on the forums suggested that we make an article about horizontal blocks, pointing out that the French Wiki already has one. (You can see a Google translated version of the French Wiki article here) I am hesitant to make that its own article here since horizontal blocks were never actually released, and we are not a Wiki about ScratchJr (we document that it exists and what it is, but that is mostly just contained within that article). However, it may be worth including in Development of Scratch 3.0. Thoughts?
jvvg (talk | contribs) 17:13, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

I agree that it shouldn't get its own article. I remember it being discussed in the early stages of development of 3.0 that horizontal blocks were going to be used instead of vertical blocks on mobile devices but nothing ever came of it... it was never included in any public betas. Keeping in mind that it was only really considered briefly at the start of development and was scrapped later on, I don't think it deserves anything big, perhaps just a few sentences at some point in the article explaining the concept and how nothing ever came of them - they were essentially just an idea. Redglitter Profile Picture Mini.gif Redglitter (Talk ~ Contributions ~ 541 edits) 18:49, 5 April 2021 (UTC)
Creating the article would be a bad idea, however including it that article would be a good idea since it was part of its development.

Hi i'm bobcat0701 i'm cool! 16:24, 8 April 2021 (UTC)
-unsigned comment by Bobcat0701 (talk | contribs)

The Scratch Wiki follows the same rules as the main Scratch Website, so the rule against promoting or linking browser extension extends here. Also, when the rule was implemented in Scratch, a Scratch Team member deleted an article about one extension.
Jammum Icon.png Jammum (💬 Talk - ✍️ Contribs - 🐱 Scratch) 17:27, 8 April 2021 (UTC)
In general, per Scratch Wiki:Guidelines, all Scratch Community Guidelines apply here. Thus, the extension policy applies as well. The one exception that may apply (though this would need to be discussed for each case individually) is extensions that were advertised on Scratch before the rule came into place that were extremely notable in their own right. One such example may be the "Antidote," an extension which reenabled [img] tags on the forums while they were disabled for a period of time.

Is there a list of image categories so I can see which category my pictures are in?
HiPeeps124816 (talk | contribs) 16:42, 8 April 2021 (UTC)

If you go to Special:CategoryTree/Images you can interactively find all image categories. Simply go down the tree until you find one that fits your image. If there really is no category that fits your image and you do need to create one (this is very rare), make it a subcategory of the most specific category that encompasses it rather than putting it directly under something like the "Images" category.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 17:35, 8 April 2021 (UTC)
I also added this to the warning that shows if you try to upload an image without a category so others can benefit.

Hello. I wanted to make a disambiguation page about something. When I decided to create the disambiguation, I noticed it was a page before, but it was deleted for being a 2 page disambiguation. I found 3 pages that the disambiguation could cover. So should I make it or should I not?
TheTrillion (talk | contribs) 03:50, 11 April 2021 (UTC)

What page was this for?
jvvg (talk | contribs) 17:28, 11 April 2021 (UTC)
I wanted to make Comment (disambiguation) which used to be a page but was deleted for being a 2 article disambiguation. I wanted to put Comment (website feature), Comment (programming feature) and Topics and Posts (comment on the forums) in the disambiguation.
TheTrillion (talk | contribs) 15:30, 12 April 2021 (UTC)
I think making a disambiguation page for that would be reasonable, and as far as I'm aware there aren't any rules against having a disambig if there are only two items, as long as one isn't obviously more likely to be searched than the other.

Bobcat0701 (talk | contribs) 15:51, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

I'm not sure. Although the forum stickies would be a nice article, I have a few problems with what you're asking here. I'm going to list them here.
1. What forum(s) would be in this article? Announcements? Suggestions? Maybe even Help With Scripts?
2. Would all the stickies be featured here or just the top ones?
Finally, 3. Would this potential sticky topic feature the stickies of hidden forums (i.e. the Welcoming Committee Forum)?
And that's all I have to say about this. Please, answer the questions, because otherwise this might not be an okay article. Thanks for reading.

Bobcat0701 (talk | contribs) MEOW yes my cat told me to write that. 00:16, 21 April 2021 (UTC)

My two cents (not speaking in my official capacity as an admin here, just my personal opinion) is that this isn't significant enough to warrant its own article. Most stickies are by users (including one by me), and we do not create articles about user-generated content.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 01:07, 21 April 2021 (UTC)
I think that would be unimportant. First of all, here is the lacking points:
 1. Is it really possible to maintain an updated list regarding sticky topics? They generally tend to be replaced/unstickied when there's no longer a need for them.
 2. It would be a kind of user-generated content. (as jvvg pointed out; though there might be dissident voices questioning this rule, like the opinions expressed in this stale discussion. Under the current policy, it's banned.)
 3. I'm not really sure about notability, even though we have had a list like this before the introduction of user-generated content ban.

I disagree with these new titles.

These are not correct names.

These versions did not have any proper names, and putting the distinguishing term (14Feb04…27Jul06) after the name "Scratch" sends the tone that the title might be an official name (imagine an experimental, informally-distributed Scratch image with everything colored aqua, having been a developer's experiment; "Scratch Aqua" would look like a formal, published name).

I feel that the previous names were slightly better, but perhaps "14 February 2004 Image", etc. would be best, not looking messy like "5up3rcal1frag1l15t1c3xp1al1d0c10u5" nor assuming any version numbers not known to be officially assigned.
Mlcreater (talk | contribs) 02:12, 18 April 2021 (UTC)

These are the official names of the Scratch versions. Before 1.0, Scratch didn't use any version number system. Therefore, it's the correct name.

While the criteria for completeness are generally much lower for a FAQ than a regular article, there is no reason an FAQ cannot be a stub. If an FAQ doesn't include enough information to give a complete answer to the question but does at least include something relevant to the question, that would be a stub.

According to Special:ActiveUsers, we have 91 active as of the time I write this. I'm assuming you're referring to the welcome template? It uses the keyword "NUMBEROFACTIVEUSERS", but I don't know how that actually works under the hood. I can verify it's not just a caching issue, since running "show preview" on that template still shows 72. So, to answer your question, it is probably not accurate.

Looking this up, apparently this has happened to others too. I ran the update script just now so it will probably start saying 112 for future usages, but I don't know how to properly make it update automatically other than using a cron job, and I would prefer we not use a cron job for something that simple and as a workaround for what may be a bug in the underlying software.

I would recommend marking it as obsolete feature instead of deleting it, because than it can be used for historical purposes. Also, when linking something, never use underscores, instead, use spaces so it can follow the style guide, specifically at no-link-underscores

Is it possible to embed a Scratch project in the Wiki? I tried using <iframe src="link"> but it does not work. Any idea?
Kccuber (talk | contribs) 16:08, 21 May 2021 (UTC)

I believe not. That is a HTML tag, and in the Scratch Wiki, only some are allowed. That tag is not part of the some. You can find a list of allowed HTML tags here.
TheTrillion (talk | contribs) 17:11, 21 May 2021 (UTC)

Kccuber (talk | contribs) 18:02, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
An extension does exist to enable it, and some other Wikis (such as French) have it enabled, but we do not have it enabled here because we have determined embedding projects in articles does not significantly improve their quality.

Put all resolved discussions from the main talk page on the archive page and remove them from the main talk page, and then put archive header at the top of the archive page. Finally, put protect at the top of the archive page to ask an EW+ to protect it.

scratchblocks is updated, now with Scratch 3.0 extensions!

Yes Resolved (since 09:37, 9 June 2021 (UTC))

scratchblocks, a library used to render Scratch blocks, is now updated to version 3.5.2. This update include support for Scratch 3.0 extensions.

Now you can write the extension blocks, without adding ::microbit for example. You'll still need to add in some cases where there is a conflict; e.g. when using tilted [any v]? block, which exists in there different extensions. In most cases, they fall back to micro:bit extension.

This update also adds icons for ::gdxfor and ::boost:

cool block::gdxfor
boost this wiki::boost

This also updates translations, so new languages are available and blocks are properly shown in other languages. There is a known bug that may happen in other languages when a translation is inconsistent, but this should not affect English.

TheTrillion's Profile Picture.png  TheTrillion • Talk • 2,288 contributions • Scratch  21:00, 9 June 2021 (UTC)

__INDEX__ signals that the page should be indexed, if by default it would not be. If I'm not mistaken, it has no effect on this wiki because all pages are indexed by default.
__NOEDITSECTION__ disables the [edit] links next to section titles (and possibly disables editing sections even if you manually try, though I haven't tested that).

Put at the bottom of the page. Also, articles do not get deleted because there is no category, it will be deleted for other reasons, which you can find by looking at the deletion summary (and bots do not have the power to delete articles, that is a power reserved for Administrators and higher (Experienced Wikians can also delete articles, but only ones that do not have a large history of edits)). Also, make sure to sign your post with four tildes (~~~~).

Maximouse (talk | contribs) 16:19, 21 June 2021 (UTC)
Yes, since Roblox has a very strict filter, too strict in many people's opinions (I can confirm this as I am an active player and have been for the last few years), and the private chat deletes messages with only one word filtered, correctly or incorrectly.
garnetluvcookie (talk | contribs) 15:43, 18 July 2021 (UTC)
Adding on to what others have said, "discord" is censored, and users under 13 years of age cannot send or recieve private messages (excluding your automated welcome message and news), and users over 13 years of age can control if everyone, friends or no-one can send them messages. However users of all ages can "friend" each other, and can chat with each other. However, as @garnetluvcookie mentioned, Roblox has a very strict filter so that shouldn't too much of a worry.

So, once, I found this file. I wanted to edit it (not the image itself, the description.) So, I click the pencil icon, and where the edit option should be, there was create (it was really the menu if you were going to create a page). I clicked it, and then I get a deletion message. Then, just to test it out, I click "Upload a new file". Same thing. A deletion message. So, that file is uneditable. Also, this is the only file I found it on.

As far as I can see, Scimonster deleted the page in 2013, but the servers seem to still have it stored and can load this file. As for your question, this is definitely a glitch, and it seems to be on the servers end.

Legal Terms in Languages Other Than German

Currently, the legal terms for the wiki are only in one language: German. Because of that, some Wikians like me can't read them, and even if they have a translator, it does a trashy job. I think there should be legal terms for every language on the wiki.
ScratchCat1038 (talk | contribs) 14:57, 1 July 2021 (UTC)

ScratchCat1038 (talk | contribs) 19:36, 1 July 2021 (UTC)
We could provide a translation into English (or any other language), but it would have to come with the disclaimer that it's provided for convenience only and that the original German version is still legally binding. The reason we don't even have that is that nobody has gone through the effort of creating that translation. I personally do not speak German so I can't help much with that.

TheTrillion's Profile Picture.png  TheTrillion • Talk • 2,288 contributions • Scratch  23:58, 10 July 2021 (UTC)
Out of curiosity, why does the Flawed Article need to be rewritten?
Jackson49 (talk | contribs) 02:38, 11 July 2021 (UTC)
When users request Scratch Wiki accounts, we want them to read S:CONTRIB in full and follow all of the instructions that are located there. As you know, this includes pointing out flaws and things to add in the Flawed Article. However, we also want users to do this themselves, without outside help or guidance. This is because the Flawed Article is a venue to check the requester's skills; not someone else's skills. However, after a while, as the Flawed Article gets known by more and more people, there is a greater chance that information about the flaws in the Flawed Article is being distributed. Changing the Flawed Article nullifies this information. It's not that we don't trust people; it's just a precaution. Keep in mind that the Flawed Article doesn't need to be changed too often, but it is still good to change it every once in a while.
That was a very wordy way of saying that we don't want people to, well, cheat, for lack of a better word. Plus, even discounting the reason above, it's always fun and refreshing to change things up once in a while. The current Flawed Article about Scratch 3.0 is our second Flawed Article (the original was about the Paint Editor), and eventually it will be time for a third. The Scratch Wiki:Flawed Article/Draft page is our head start on that third article (and hopefully will be used for the fourth, fifth, sixth, etc.!). ;)
Bigpuppy Logo.png bigpuppy talk ▪︎ contribs 03:17, 11 July 2021 (UTC)
Thanks! That makes sense.
Jackson49 (talk | contribs) 03:23, 11 July 2021 (UTC)
I think Blocks or Discussion Forums could be used. Both pages are major features of Scratch and might be easy to add second person to it. Some things that could be absent from the flawed versions might be the list of Blocks or categories of them (for Blocks) or the list of forums (for Discussion Forums) (so requesters can mention that it could be added).
Jammum Icon.png Jammum (💬 Talk - ✍️ Contribs - 🐱 Scratch) 09:50, 11 July 2021 (UTC)
Maybe New Scratcher? It's controversial, so the flawed article could include lots of opinions.
Jackson49 (talk | contribs) 19:09, 11 July 2021 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Username might also work. It could have problems like the writer saying their username, and saying that you should be able to change your username. It also probably wouldn't be hard to add other flaws, like dead links or missing citations.

Jackson49 (talk | contribs) 05:43, 12 July 2021 (UTC)

It might also be easy to add second person, and information about variable-related blocks could be excluded. A personal opinion could be added about something like cloud data (such as "I think there is no harm in New Scratchers using cloud variables" (this is not my opinion on cloud data)) or hypothetical cloud lists.

Yes Resolved (since 18:33, 15 July 2021 (UTC))

The Scratch Wiki's GitHub now has a repository for a MediaWiki extension that uses 'Arc CDN' and a widget appears in the bottom-left of anything on the Scratch Wiki (I think it applies to several users logged in on the Scratch Wiki). Why does this wiki use 'Arc'?
Jammum Icon.png Jammum (💬 Talk - ✍️ Contribs - 🐱 Scratch) 06:52, 15 July 2021 (UTC)

My fault for not posting on the CP up front about this.
Arc CDN is a Content Delivery Network. (That's what it stands for! Search up the term if it's unfamiliar to you.) The gimmick is that instead of having servers all around the world to cache content near you (like a normal CDN), you receive content from other people near you who are viewing the same content at the same time. If nobody is viewing the same content at the same time, or the people who are doing so are no closer to you than our own servers, then your requests go to our servers as normal.
What this amounts to is a peer-to-peer (P2P) CDN rather than a distributed-system CDN. Content should generally load faster if more people near you are viewing it at once. (And while our servers are in Germany, "near you" could just mean "in the US" if that is where you are.)
The second reason we're using it is because it literally makes us money. Arc has an interesting business model in that the biggest sites pay a lot for access to their P2P network, and (at least some of) that money gets paid out to all users as a reward for contributing to their network. Big sites do get money too, but they generally pay way more than they make. Smaller sites like ours will actually make more than we pay. This will help support the costs of hosting and other fees (though our current estimates suggest it will not cover it in full).
We're currently rolling out Arc usage incrementally. Today it's being randomly enabled for 20% of sessions; it was enabled for 10% yesterday; and it will be increased to 30% tomorrow if there are no complaints. (You had a good guess, but it applies to any user, logged in or not; but only a certain proportion of them at the moment.) Eventually it will be enabled for everyone.
I will add a user preference later today that allows any logged-in user to opt in (either to support us or just to test it out). However, once the rollout is complete, the preference will be removed.
Keep an eye out for any issues this causes, if any, and report them here. If all goes well, the Wiki will be faster, financially more stable, and generally even more reliably here to stay.

I have added the preference. Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering → Check "Opt in to Arc CDN" if you want to try it out without waiting for the proportional rollout to hit you.

Why is SyntaxHighlight disabled?

Yes Resolved (since 18:00, 16 July 2021 (UTC))

If someone were to go to Special:Version and see the extensions they would see SyntaxHighlight installed. While I know this is because MediaWiki 1.21+ come with this extension, I think it should be enabled, since the Language Tutorials would benefit from this.
Dhuls's Wiki Icon.png Dhuls (Talk|580 Contributions|Scratch) 03:49, 16 July 2021 (UTC)

Our servers don't currently have Python 3, which Pygments (the backend of SyntaxHighlight) requires. It used to actually work, because older versions of SyntaxHighlight used older py2-pygments, but we upgraded MediaWiki itself and that forced a SyntaxHighlight upgrade. A transfer is coming at some point, which should resolve these issues.

Speedy Delete-like feature

Yes Resolved (since 17:35, 19 July 2021 (UTC))

If someone thinks there would be a unanimous decision to delete a page, couldn't they just put the Delete template instead of the NotUseful template? If not, then I propose a feature similar to wikipedia:WP:PROP. It would basically skip the uneeded discussion that probably won't even finish anyways.
Dhuls's Wiki Icon.png Dhuls (Talk|580 Contributions|Scratch) 17:03, 19 July 2021 (UTC)

That is already a thing. If a page obviously doesn't fit the Wiki (for example, a chat article, a spam article, etc.), you can use delete. However if there is a small chance it might fit (for example, an overly specific tutorial) then still use NotUseful.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 17:34, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
I should also mention that EW+ will generally delete a page without discussion even if it doesn't have delete if we deem it as clearly not fitting the Wiki.

How to get post ID for references?

Yes Resolved (since 00:42, 24 July 2021 (UTC))

When making references for an article, how do you link to a specific forum post?
Jackson49 (talk | contribs) 00:09, 24 July 2021 (UTC)

Here is how.
 1. Press Ctrl+⇧ Shift+I.
 2. Turn on a feature where you can select parts of a website to see their HTML code (I do not know what that is called, you might not have this feature.)
 3. Select the date the post was made.
 4. Click it.
 5. Do you see <a href="/discuss/post/number/">Date</a>? After /post/, has the post number.
Now it is done.
TheTrillion's Profile Picture.png  TheTrillion • Talk • 2,288 contributions • Scratch  00:29, 24 July 2021 (UTC)
You can also just right-click the date in the top-left corner of the post, click "Copy Link" or a similar option, and the ID will be in the link that is copied, for example:
Or you could just (left-)click the date, and the ID should be the last number in your address bar, for example:
And then you would link to it via post:ID, for example post:3022659.
Of course, TheTrillion's suggestion of using Inspect Element works just as well. Just do whichever is easiest for you. :)

TheTrillion's Profile Picture.png  TheTrillion • Talk • 2,288 contributions • Scratch  17:03, 1 August 2021 (UTC)

Yes, I believe that's generally okay. That said, please keep in mind that there are at least two valid styles of indentation currently in use on the wiki:
 1. Indenting according to the indentation of the last comment on the topic.
 2. Indenting according to the indentation of the specific comment being replied to.
Whether we should even have two indentation styles in use on the wiki is a different question entirely. However, for now, please just try not to remove users' "purposeful" indentation (if that makes sense). ;)

User:TeamDAB_Official (talk) 09:31, 2 August 2021 (UTC)

Alternate accounts for Scratch Wiki accounts are not allowed on this wiki (according to S:JOIN) except for bots, and I think it is not possible for accounts to be deleted on this wiki.
Jammum Icon.png Jammum (💬 Talk - ✍️ Contribs - 🐱 Scratch) 14:10, 2 August 2021 (UTC)
We do have a process for handling GDPR deletion requests. However, if you get your account deleted using your GDPR rights, you are still not allowed to have another account and will lose your ability to edit the Wiki. The only time we allow renames is if the Scratch Team renames your Scratch account.

No No support per S:NOSP. We shouldn't have articles for things like this, Scratch Notifier, Ocular, etc. Additionally, there are a large amount of tools like this, and there would be many requests to make an article for those, though the Ocular banner thing may be notable enough for a section in Forum Trends.

Well, separating them and transforming the Portal into a decentralized one will make it worse, and that's actually why we have a portal: to discuss everything about the wiki on a determined space, to enable that everyone is able to participate discussions and noticing it on a faster speed, as well as acting as a noticeboard for important updates on software, wiki rules, etc. The Community Portal is also frequently archived for finished discussions to not to do it too way cluttered. Not to mention that there is a table of contents for finding the topic you're looking for.

I just unprotected the article since we are now featuring a new article for this month's Wiki Wednesday. You can edit it now.

Can I create a page with the Studio Update Questions all on it?

 Unresolved (see all...)

CodeLearnerSai (talk | contribs) 22:43, 28 August 2021 (UTC)

We already have a page about the studio update, so any additional information should go there. However, when you say "questions," what do you mean? Like frequently asked questions about the update and their answers? If so, could you please provide an example of such a question and the answer?

October Featured Images

Yes Resolved (since 00:52, 1 October 2021 (UTC))

Hello everyone! It's time to decide on featured images for October.

Large file dimensions not working

Yes Resolved (since 21:57, 7 September 2021 (UTC))

I recently uploaded a new version of File:Scratch 3.0 Program.png which had dimensions of 1920x1080. However, after uploading, the file did not display on any pages and instead showed a link to the file page. When uploading the file, I thought it would work because the file dimension limit is 1920x1080. Does anyone know why this is happening?
CrazyBoy826-Icon.png CrazyBoy826 Talk | Contribs | Scratch account
22:39, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

1920x1080 is also over the limit, so resize the image to, say 960x540.
Dhuls's Wiki Icon.png Dhuls (Talk|580 Contributions|Scratch) 22:59, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
What I mean is there used to be a bug where pages could crash if files on it were larger than 1366x768. Apparently that limit had been raised, but these larger files are still not working. For example, on Scratch 3.0 it shows a link to the image (after hard refresh), but on Scratch User Interface it appears as normal. Have there been any discussions on this matter before?

Looking at your test uploads, you seem to have things working with larger file sizes again. However, please do not use larger file sizes than necessary in order to ensure pages still load quickly.

Icons for Protection

Yes Resolved (since 17:35, 8 September 2021 (UTC))

So today I decided to make some icons for protection which are listed in my user page. These are topicons that should show when a page is protected, I predict that only around 5 will be used out of the 7 that i made.
DXLBandLokiBlaster 17:02, 8 September 2021 (UTC)

Please fix your signature. Your signature must be in a minisig and must also have a linebreak at the start.
None of these topicons will be used. This wiki does not use protection indicators (mostly because we've never found it necessary). Generally, please don't upload files with the presumption that they will not be used, unless they are archival screenshots or files of the Scratch website.
I have deleted the files you uploaded. If you didn't save your files locally, I can give you the original files upon request.
Thank you for your contributions nonetheless - they are merely somewhat misplaced here.

Are All Wiki Accounts Considered Wikians?

Yes Resolved (since 21:50, 8 September 2021 (UTC))

I was wondering,if all Wiki accounts are Wikians? And if so, how can we accept requests for Wiki accounts?
ComputerCole (talk | contribs) 21:43, 8 September 2021 (UTC)

No. Wiki accounts when they are accepted are New Wikians (see that page for what restrictions are applied to those accounts), and after 50 edits and 30 days, they become Wikians, but due to how the software works are still technically "New Wikians" (with the restrictions no longer applying). To handle account requests you need to become an Experienced Wikian, and those are chosen by elections on an as-needed basis.

Problem with interwiki links

Yes Resolved (since 16:51, 11 September 2021 (UTC))

When any interwiki link is clicked (or typed in the search bar), instead of getting redirected to the other language, I get a 421 Misdirected Request error because "the requested host name does not match the Server Name Indication (SNI) in use for this connection". Also, interwiki links on pages do not seem to appear. Can someone fix this?
CrazyBoy826-Icon.png CrazyBoy826 Talk | Contribs | Scratch account
03:24, 10 September 2021 (UTC)

The reason the links do not appear is when linking to another language Wiki, using the regular link format registers that on the "In Other Languages" box on the left. You need to use :de:Scratch to make a link. I also cannot reproduce the error you're getting, can you please give an example?
jvvg (talk | contribs) 14:03, 10 September 2021 (UTC)
When I wrote this, clicking on any language on the left bar on the homepage or typing "de:" or any other language in the search bar sent you to the error page, but it seems to be fixed now.

Visual Editor broken

Yes Resolved (since 18:10, 12 September 2021 (UTC))

Even with my adblocker disabled, the following error appears

Error contacting the Parsoid/RESTBase server (HTTP 404)

I usually prefer the source editor, but I like the visual editor for tables.
Dhuls's Wiki Icon.png Dhuls (Talk|580 Contributions|Scratch) 15:25, 12 September 2021 (UTC)

What page is it on? If it's on a subpage, this is a known issue that we cannot fix with our current server setup.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 17:36, 12 September 2021 (UTC)
It happened on my sandbox, but since this can't be fixed, I'll just stick with the source editor.
Dhuls's Wiki Icon.png Dhuls (Talk|580 Contributions|Scratch) 18:10, 12 September 2021 (UTC)
Probably a necro so I'm sorry but it happens on my own MediaWiki instance too so if you can find a fix that'd be great :D

Prevent custom signatures that are not minaturised from being used

Yes Resolved (since 02:59, 7 October 2021 (UTC))

Is it possible to prevent custom signatures that are not minaturised from being used? If it is, I think such could be implemented into the wiki (AbuseFilter could be used if possible). If this were to be implemented, it could improve the layout and/or markup of talk pages and users would know that custom signatures should be miniaturised.
Jammum Icon.png Jammum (💬 Talk - ✍️ Contribs - 🐱 Scratch) 16:38, 13 September 2021 (UTC)

This would be very difficult to implement, as AbuseFilter as far as I'm aware can't actually detect what is a signature vs. the rest of the message.

See wikipedia:WP:USERBOX.
Dhuls's Wiki Icon.png Dhuls (Talk|580 Contributions|Scratch) 02:03, 23 September 2021 (UTC)
(edit conflict) They don't really exist on the wiki (or at least, they aren't widespread) because people don't create them. But are free to create some in your userspace if you would like. :)
@jvvg: See Wikipedia:WP:Userboxes. :)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── I don't really understand that. Can you explain?

ILikeProggraming123 (talkcontribs) 20:33, 1 October 2021 (UTC)

@ILikeProggraming123: Just go ahead and create your own in your userspace. We are not Wikipedia, and hence we don't have any intents to create every single template on this wiki via just copying from Wikipedia. However, you can start a proposal (and feel free to do so!) to introduce the guidelines about userboxes to the wiki. But until that date, the commonly accepted practice is to create those boxes outside of Template space.

A draft namespace suggestion

 Unresolved (see all...)

I think there should be a new namespace (similar to Wikipedia's Draft: namespace) for mostly incomplete pages or for pages that have the Wiki Standards template and need a lot of edits to the entire page to meet editing guidelines. Such namespace could be called Draft:, WIP: or something similar.
Jammum Icon.png Jammum (💬 Talk - ✍️ Contribs - 🐱 Scratch) 15:55, 24 September 2021 (UTC)

A good idea- in theory. I don't really know how this works, and there might not be enough articles to count for the namespace. Maybe let someone more experienced handle this.
ILikeProggraming123 (talkcontribs) 23:54, 30 September 2021 (UTC)
As ILikePRoggramming123 said, I don't think we have enough articles to justify this, though this could be a chicken and egg problem (i.e. people don't create drafts because there's no "official" way to do so). For now our system seems to be create an article at Article Name/Draft for drafts, or alternatively your user sandbox.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 00:01, 1 October 2021 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) If you don't know how this works, try checking out wikipedia:Project:Draft.
Dhuls's Wiki Icon.png Dhuls (Talk|580 Contributions|Scratch) 00:25, 1 October 2021 (UTC)
My suggestion for a Draft namespace (based on Wikipedia's) is for articles that are expected to be actual articles soon (so incomplete tutorials and pages that need a lot of work before it meets wiki guidelines) that other users can edit (so Draft pages should follow all rules of mainspace pages, including notability guidelines (draft pages on subjects which are not notable enough could still be moved to userspace)). The namespace could be used to store pages that need some more editing before being presentable, with the title the article is expected to have with a Draft: prefix.

^ This. There is no rule requiring screenshots be generic. Also, if you really think there is a problem with a file, just use Bad Image, there's no need to make a template for a very specific case.

Where should the "References" section be added?

Yes Resolved (since 15:07, 6 October 2021 (UTC))

Should references be added before (or after) the See Also/External Links section(s)?
BarelySmooth (talk | contribs) 13:31, 5 October 2021 (UTC)

The editing conventions state that the References section goes after both See Also and External Links.
Jammum Icon.png Jammum (💬 Talk - ✍️ Contribs - 🐱 Scratch) 14:50, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
I thought that too (because it was like that in most articles), but this page says, "...at the end of the article, before a see also/external links section...". I think this is a mistake in the page about references.
BarelySmooth (talk | contribs) 06:56, 6 October 2021 (UTC)

This template should be used on user pages of users with all elevated roles.
CodeLearnerSai (talk | contribs) 23:53, 6 October 2021 (UTC)

I don't see how this is useful, as they could just say they have all roles.
Dhuls's Wiki Icon.png Dhuls (Talk|580 Contributions|Scratch) 00:27, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
I also don't see any value in this. It should be up to individual users how (and even if) they want to advertise their role on the Wiki.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 01:01, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
It would signify that the user has all the rights in the wiki, and if you vandalize, you may end up in serious trouble.
CodeLearnerSai (talk | contribs) 15:24, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
It's generally pretty well accepted common knowledge that users couldn't vandalize, and I think any user that was going to vandalize would not be deterred by that template, and they wouldn't even see it unless they were specifically vandalizing a bureaucrat's userpage.

"Scratch Contributors (disambiguation)" page?

 Unresolved (see all...)

I recently spoke with jvvg who thought that adding a disambiguation for the page Scratch Contributors was a good idea. That article is mainly about people who've made significant contributions to Scratch. However, I was thinking of having a disambiguation that shows all areas of Scratch you can contribute (ex. SDS, SWC, FPC, etc.). Thoughts? (I originally posted this on the page's discussion page, but never got a response, so I thought I'd bring it up here.)
