The Wiki now has (beta) dark theme!

 Unresolved (see all...)

The Wiki interface now has a dark theme! This theme is still in beta - expect issues. You can enable it in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering. Please report any issues you encounter on this CP topic or in the Wiki forum topic.

We're already aware of some compatibility issues, but please mention whatever you see. Please report issues by adding them to the list in the following format:

* Issue https://link.to/screenshot~~~~

Please use an approved Image Host for your screenshot. Note also that we are prioritizing cases where the interface is actually unusable (e.g. dark-theme-white text on light-theme-white background) over cases where regular light theme styling is appearing in the midst of dark theme styling.

https://scratch-wiki.info

 Unresolved (see all...)

The page [1] has some visual problems. The link "Scratch" in the description is colored very similarly to the background. Also, the wiki logos are on a dark background, which makes some parts unreadable. For example, the "wiki" in the English wiki logo does not have a border, which means it is difficult to see. Also, the Dutch wiki logo has background removal mistakes which are easily seen. Could this page be improved to remove these problems?
CrazyBoy826 icon.png CrazyBoy826 | Talk | 8,233 edits | Scratch 23:28, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

I agree with you on the first point; the link does seem very similar to the background. I don't think it necessarily needs to be changed, however.
Filmlover12 Icon 2.png Filmlover12 Talk Contribs Scratch 15:07, 20 January 2022 (UTC)
I'm not sure what you're seeing, but for me, the header is purple, the link to "Scratch" is blue, and the wiki logos are on a white background. What device are you using?
Kanga logo.png KangaCoder talkcontribsprofile 16:55, 20 January 2022 (UTC)
@Wangat Not sure if this is directed to me, but yes, you are correct. They just mean that the blue link looks fairly similar to the purple header.
Filmlover12 Icon 2.png Filmlover12 Talk Contribs Scratch 17:15, 20 January 2022 (UTC)
@Filmlover12: I was asking CrazyBoy826, but I suppose it could’ve been for you as well. However, I switched devices to my phone (rather than my laptop) and the page shows up as is described in the OP.
Kanga logo.png KangaCoder talkcontribsprofile 17:20, 20 January 2022 (UTC)
This probably happens because I am using dark mode and the website did not specify a background color, so it defaulted to black.
CrazyBoy826 icon.png CrazyBoy826 | Talk | 8,233 edits | Scratch 23:19, 20 January 2022 (UTC)
Adding a background color to the CSS should fix this.
CrazyBoy826 icon.png CrazyBoy826 | Talk | 8,233 edits | Scratch 23:10, 21 January 2022 (UTC)

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────Yes, it has a bad contrast ratio of 2.21 which makes the link color appear similar to the background color for colorblind people. The header link's color should be changed to #d3f0ff, and the interwiki links at the bottom's color should be changed to #0074b5. Really wish someone would fix this.
IviedwallUserIcon (circle).png -iviedwall- talk contributions 🐱   06:20, 22 August 2022 (UTC)

The site is intentionally styled differently based on whether your browser indicates it prefers dark theme or not. This includes the background color - it's not dark because it's missing.
It so happens that someone noticed these issues and opened a GitHub issue about them already.
Since the source of the site is open, you can try your hand at fixing the issues yourself. I'd welcome a pull request. However, the logo images cannot be modified (though the English one should be updated to match the current logo) - what if you try body > main > ul > li > a > img {background-image: radial-gradient(white, transparent 75%);}?

New Election System Proposal

 Unresolved (see all...)

Hello! In the most recent Experienced Wikian election, there were only two candidates: myself and Jammum. Due to this, the admins at the time decided not to use Borda count system (in which candidates are ranked from favorite to least favorite), and instead did a more simple way of voting.

Basically, you could vote for either candidate (or, choose not to vote for either) and vote if you approved the candidate(s). If the candidates had 50% or more of a support vote, then they were elected EW.

I feel like this way of voting doesn't pit candidates against eachother and create rivalries over who'll get the higher number of points since voters can abstain from voting for one candidate or the other (or both, I suppose); each candidate is focused more on themselves, rather then their opponent.

To get to my point, I feel like that, if/when the Wiki administration decides to have another election, we should use this new system, not the Borda one, no matter the number of candidates.

Of course, the Borda system does have its ups when there are many candidates; however, I think a mix of the two might be helpful to the administration in the future (possibly requiring all voters to vote for each candidate, and maybe increasing the minimun support percent to 60 or 75%). Any thoughts?
Kanga logo.png KangaCoder talkcontribsprofile 22:13, 16 February 2022 (UTC)

The reason we normally have an election using the Borda count system is we want to limit the number of Experienced Wikians, as the more we have the harder it is to coordinate, and the saying goes "too many cooks spoil the broth." We used the confidence system this time because we only had two selected to run (we wanted two), so there was no issue of adding too many. Unfortunately, I think some amount of pitting candidates against each other is inevitable if we want to achieve the result of not having too many EWs. That being said, we are open to potential alternative voting strategies that still ensure we avoid having too many EWs elected (for reference, we usually want two per election).
jvvg (talk | contribs) 03:57, 17 February 2022 (UTC)
Fair point. :)
Kanga logo.png KangaCoder talkcontribsprofile 20:35, 17 February 2022 (UTC)
I have an idea on this topic. Why not have polling system. This is only for 3 and more. In this a person can only vote 2 people. 1 person will be voted 1 who the person wants the second most and 2nd will be voted 2 and it is first preference and as you are electing 1-2 people then count which person has most points will be EW. Through this there are pretty less chances of many people being elected

Suggestion: Rule page for welcome templates

 Unresolved (see all...)

If it is considered necessary, I think a page on rules on custom welcome templates could be created. Some things it could mention include the 5 welcome templates maximum per talk page, that users should think that they know enough about Wiki contributing to state that they can help users on talk pages, and possibly less likely (although covered by the Wiki guidelines as well), using proper spelling and grammar in welcome templates.
Jammum Icon.png Jammum (💬 Talk - ✍️ Contribs - 🐱 Scratch) 15:19, 18 February 2022 (UTC)

I support this. We already indicate in the userspace policy that only five are allowed, I think it's reasonable to have more fleshed out rules to ensure that these give a fitting welcome to the Wiki.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 15:46, 18 February 2022 (UTC)
I have some objections.
First of all, I don't think that limiting the amount of welcome templates on the talk page is very helpful, in order to encourage users to edit more, unless requested by the user. While the users definitely should not only limit their contributions with non-mainspace edits for continuously maintaining the wiki, I don't see any harm if users also focuses outside of the mainspace. And, in my opinion, this also keeps the wiki thriving because the people find a reason to check the wiki - and hence not cutting their ties with the wiki.
However, if there'd be a guideline (like how Bigpuppy led about standardizing signatures before) to standardize welcome templates (i.e those shouldn't be too flashy, shouldn't cover the whole page, etc.), or maybe listing some suggestions as common sense (for example not posting too much templates at the same time); then that would be nice indeed.

Encourage user talk page topics that only say hello to go on Scratch profiles instead

 Unresolved (see all...)

I think that user talk page topics where users only say hello (except welcome templates and messages) should go on users' Scratch profiles, as I think they are not very Wiki-related, might be a very broad and/or generic topic, and they take a very short amount of time to write.
Jammum Icon.png Jammum (💬 Talk - ✍️ Contribs - 🐱 Scratch) 10:55, 21 February 2022 (UTC) modified 16:24, 21 February 2022 (UTC)

You are free to do this on your own talk page if you wish, but I personally don't see any problem with messages that simply say "hello." We allow non-wiki-related messages on user talk pages. The Scratch Wiki is a community, and sometimes people in our community wish to greet each other for no reason other than to be friendly. I don't see why they should be required to go to a separate website to be able to do that. :)
Bigpuppy Logo.png bigpuppy talk ▪︎ contribs 15:52, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
This talk page contains a long streak of messages (the users who posted them all joined the wiki after I became EW) that only say hello. I think these could be more convenient to the user and keeping the talk page more wiki-related or formal if those messages went on Scratch profiles instead.
Jammum Icon.png Jammum (💬 Talk - ✍️ Contribs - 🐱 Scratch) 07:56, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
Like bigpuppy said, you can enforce it on your own page, but unless it becomes spammy I see no reason to do it for all talk pages.
78ch3ProfilePic.png 78ch3 : [My talk] | [|Contribs] | [|Main] 02:50, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
Yes Support. It could be very annoying for some users when it gets spammy and makes it hard to focus on more important discussions about the wiki than random greetings. However, if a user was blocked on Scratch or can't access Scratch, saying "Hi" and not making it look spammy is still reasonable since they probably just want to interact with people.

Tip of the Day

 Unresolved (see all...)

The Tip of the Day project was started some time ago. I think it is a very good idea, but not much work has been done on it. It will take a very long time before we have 366 tips (one for each day of the year).

Instead of having that many tips, we can start with the tips we have and randomly post one on Scratch Wiki Home each day. There are already enough tips to start doing this. Having the tips on Scratch Wiki Home will also encourage more editors to add tips. (At User:CrazyBoy826/Scratch Wiki Home, there is a version of the home page with a section for tips.)

Instead of having one tip for each day of the year, we can have a human (or bot) randomly select one of the tips to be posted on the home page (similar to how News works). This will encourage more editors to suggest tips that we can post later.

Thoughts and suggestions?
CrazyBoy826 icon.png CrazyBoy826 | Talk | 8,233 edits | Scratch 19:10, 20 March 2022 (UTC)

I currently believe this is a good idea as I think it would be a useful addition to the homepage. Just one question, would the tips be related to articles on the Wiki? For example, a tip about using a certain type of block and having a link to that block's page on the Wiki.
Adzboy (talk | contribs) 19:22, 20 March 2022 (UTC)
The tips would have links, but they would not necessarily be related to individual articles. See User:Bigpuppy/Tip of the Day for more information.

Nice idea, I support. There are only 365 days and there are 2 type of tips and also there can be enough tips for 365 days soon but why not start with putting 1 tip for a week? and once we get enough tips we can start with the original plan of a new tip everyday and Bigpuppy itself update the homepage maybe. We can first check all tips in both scratch and scratch wiki tip of the day sections and delete the duplicates. We can use the same tips which display there 1st on the project page.

Give the navigation box, tools box and for editors box the position: fixed; property

This would help a lot. For example, if I'm at the bottom of the community portal, I have to scroll all the way up to purge it. But is the boxes had the position: fixed; property they would stay in one place.
SpiderLogo.png Vdiu | Talk | Contributions | Scratch Profile 02:44, 31 July 2022 (UTC)

I agree that this should be added. It's really annoying having to scroll all the way up.
link:User:Starhero5697 starhero5697 talk 229 contributions scratch profile 11:23, 31 July 2022 (UTC)
I agree, this would make navigation more convenient. Now this isn't implemented yet, so you have to add this:
.left {
position: sticky; /* Sticky is better than fixed because it doesn't overlap the footer ig */
    top: 0;
}
into your CSS page. Hope this helps.
IviedwallUserIcon (circle).png -iviedwall- talk contributions 🐱   03:34, 1 August 2022 (UTC)
Oh. That works pretty well, but I still think it should be set as a default as not many people (Me, as a example) know what a CSS page is.
SpiderLogo.png Vdiu | Talk | Contributions | Scratch Profile 11:56, 1 August 2022 (UTC)
Btw, I found the page for Wiki CSS: MediaWiki:Common.css
IviedwallUserIcon (circle).png -iviedwall- talk contributions 🐱   09:14, 5 August 2022 (UTC)
Hi, I'm the person who made the skin. I realize this is a necropost but I wanted to provide some context.
I did consider this when I was originally designing it. The problem that arose was if the boxes became taller than your screen, either you wouldn't be able to access the bottom parts of the last boxes, or there would be an ugly scroll bar on the right of the boxes, to the left of the page. I didn't want to make that choice for everyone, including viewers, so I did it this way instead.
You can use user styling to make that choice yourself. I recommend putting it in skin-specific CSS rather than common CSS; i.e. in Special:MyPage/scratchwikiskin2.css rather than Special:MyPage/common.css.
The MediaWiki:*.css pages follow a similar rule, but they apply to the whole site instead of specific users. So MediaWiki:Common.css applies to the whole site no matter what skin you use; while MediaWiki:Vector.css applies to the whole site when using the Vector skin. They also augment the existing skin styling which can be found here for SWS2.

Create a Page Expansion Invitation System

This would be similar to the Discussion Invitation System, but only, it would be for inviting people to expand pages. I know this might sound like it's not needed, because there is already Category:Articles to Expand, but no one sees this much. There are almost a 100 pages in this category, so obviously not many people are seeing this category.
SpiderLogo.png Vdiu | Talk | Contributions | Scratch Profile 16:10, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

I actually think that a "pages that should be created" list would be useful too. With such, the people would get motivated to write more new articles.
Ahmetlii logo.gif ahmetlii  Talk  Contributions  Directory
18:46, 20 August 2022 (UTC)
@ahmetlii I think that would be a good idea. The only issue is what sort of articles could actually be included, as there are not many more articles as such to create.
Filmlover12 Icon 2.png Filmlover12 Talk Contribs Scratch 18:57, 20 August 2022 (UTC)
I feel like that it the issue with missing articles. It is hard to find the last few pages that are needed, like it is hard to take the last few impurities from water. I also feel like the invitation system should only be used if needed in a hurry (rush/emergency), like for current effects or if it is linked from a featured article or image/wiki Wednesday.
29590234_18x18.png Ideapad-320 | Talk | Contribs | Scratch 02:05, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
@Ideapad-320 Yes Good idea. There should also be a list of people who are free so they can respond quickly in an emergency. But I feel like this system would be rarely used then, like once or twice a year to create pages for special events like April Fools Day that will be gone in a few days.
IviedwallUserIcon (circle).png -iviedwall- talk contributions 🐱   06:00, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
@ahmetlii, good idea. but the problem is - how are we going to get people to look at the list?
@-iviedwall-, well, the system will be in use until all 100 pages in Category:Articles to Expand are expanded. After that, we can see.
SpiderLogo.png Vdiu | Talk | Contributions | Scratch Profile 12:12, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
@Vdiu I kind of feel like the emergency thing needs to always be there to create new pages and sections for special activities and news.
IviedwallUserIcon (circle).png -iviedwall- talk contributions 🐱   11:16, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
@Filmlover12: You're quite right about it, but even if any active user would put an article per year, that would make at least 20 articles. And I think there are many, many things that conform to the existing Wiki rules but waiting to be documented. Even the calls and functions inside 3.0 might worth documented: we have many articles about Squeak function calls but not much about Scratch VM (Though JA wiki made some good ones as far as I've understood).
@Vdiu: good question. Most of the people don't even notice Special:WantedPages so I am quite suspicious about it as well. There might be something fancy like "Create-A-Page Marathon" for a certain period so that the people would be more willing to contribute on something. There might be also like a monthly cooperation project with different themes each month (like expanding stubs, translating missing articles from other wikis or vice versa - namely, DE and JP, this would also motivate some bilingual or multilingual users that knows the language as well; or creating pages on a certain topic - say, Forums).

Regarding the development builds of 1.x (2003-2009)

Hello, i'm a member of the 'Block Coding Archive', an archive that focuses on block-based programming by the Lifelong Kindergarten and Playful Invention Company corporations.

I would like to clarify that we've found over 173 new builds that were compiled throughtout the development of Scratch 1.x (2003-2009), found on John Maloney (one of the people that worked on Scratch during the early-mid 2000s)'s former website.

The reason why i'm posting this is because i want to document all 173 and also remove some misinformation on the already existing pages for 14Feb04, 13Oct04, etc. We also found new obsolete blocks in some of the builds (There were scrapped file blocks!), so i'd be happy if they get listed on the List of Obsolete Blocks page.

All of the new development builds can be found under the '2003-2009 Development Builds' folder in the Google Drive archive: (link removed - unmoderated chat an you can't link this on scratch)

Anyways, this is all i have to say for now. I'll update you guys when a new build comes out.

Peace out!

(Oh yeah, one more thing that i forgot to mention is that the earliest build we have now is 11Oct03.)

The link should be added back because i'd think that people are curious about the builds, second thing is that i don't want people to search Block Coding Archive on Google because their Google Sites website isn't even the first result.

  • I actually don't use AOL lol, that's actually the account of one of the archive's founders. Also, i don't think we should put all of the versions in a single subpage, that would cause lag for some people.
    • Oh yeah, small update; by reverting changes in some of the versions we have, we were able to find more builds! (albeit fragmented)
      • One more thing is that there's a spreadsheet that lists all of the versions we have and do not have (currently it goes all the way to 1.0): [removed]

I understand that these specific files may not contain unmoderated chat or insppropriate language, but they could lead to it. Google Drive is strictly forbidden on Scratch, so you may not link it on the wiki. Could I link to a closed Discord server and have it be allowed? No. Because it's still on contrabanned website.

I do not mean that we should put them on all on one page. I just think we should clump a few together (eg. 10 lost versions in a row)
29590234_18x18.png Ideapad-320 | Talk | Contribs | Scratch 00:17, 3 October 2022 (UTC)
@han614698:
Google Drive is strictly forbidden on Scratch,
Just looked at the forums, the reason for this particular ban is that the email address is shown (on particular setups as far as I am aware), which is an understandable concern and something that I didn't realize at first to be in violation of the CG. I'd expect reasoning of the concern to be exactly mentioned on this thread though (nobody is a soothsayer), and there is the point that the site - on many cases - itself does not directly redirect you into unmoderated chat (otherwise we wouldn't mention many more sites, for example Wikipedia). Still, it'd be otherwise fine to put those files under other file sharing services.
Also Discord is essentially different, it is totally focused on chat services so the reasoning of that ban is quite apparent.
Edit: But still, making the info that can be easily used for unmoderated chat available on the linked page is not allowed under CG.

I've uploaded the entire archive to the Wiki servers instead - https://en.scratch-wiki.info/w/images/Scratch_2003_-_2009_Development_Builds.zip - so I've now safely removed the Google Drive link. Google Drive links have been removed by the Scratch Team before so I'm not taking chances.
Note Note: This is a direct file transfer, not a Special:Upload, so there is no File: page for that zip. The direct link is all we have.
@MixelFanUTP - you're free to create whatever pages / make whatever edits you feel are appropriate. I'm not seeing any consensus on the proper format so just go ahead and people will likely clean up after you.
You can use the link I gave above as a citation if necessary. Let me know if the Google Drive is updated significantly enough that the file stored on the Wiki should be updated. I've bookmarked your original link so you don't need to break guidelines by posting it again.
Thanks for doing this. Archival is an important part of documentation.

MediaWiki 1.39 upcoming upgrade

Hi everyone,

As some of you are aware, our current practice is to keep the Wiki on the long-term support (LTS) versions of MediaWiki released every two years. The next LTS version, MediaWiki 1.39, will be coming out relatively soon. Our current plan is to upgrade to it when we believe it is ready.

MediaWiki 1.39 includes a number of breaking changes for extensions we have relied on. For our in-house developed extensions and skin, we are currently in the process of making the necessary changes to ensure compatibility. For third-party extensions, we will need to conduct an audit and see which ones have updates available. As a result, we probably will not be ready to upgrade immediately when it comes out, but hopefully not too long after.

What does this mean for everyone here? Odds are the experience of viewers and editors won't change much, though of course each update adds new features and fixes bugs. There will probably be some downtime associated with this upgrade, but hopefully it will be minimal (the upgrade to 1.35 resulted in less than an hour of downtime, and we can probably significantly reduce that this time). We will post updates as we have them.

I also want to specifically thank apple502j for their work in modernizing a lot of our extensions in preparation for this. Their work gave us a massive head start on this and is going to make this process a lot easier.

Just an update, MediaWiki 1.39 has been released. The current aim is to get this upgraded in January, but we will keep everyone posted.

Han614698 H Logo.png han614698 talkcontribsprofile 12:36, 5 January 2023 (UTC)
More work has gone underway to get our extensions updated. You can track the progress here: https://github.com/orgs/InternationalScratchWiki/projects/4 However the upgrade itself has not yet happened. We will make a separate announcement once the upgrade is scheduled (and likely update the site notice while it is in progress).

Add a mentioning system

 Unresolved (see all...)

So, when you type @ and then someone's username, there should be a feature that pings you. Sort of like the bar which comes up when someone posts a message on your talk page. I know this suggestion was rejected on scratch due to spam, but that's not a problem here. You can only have one account and if you spam you will be banned. Another alternative would be pinging you when a page on your watchlist has been edited.
SpiderLogo.png Vdiu | Talk | Contributions | Scratch Profile 11:13, 17 November 2022 (UTC)

This had been discussed before as far as I know. jvvg has been developing a feature for the Scratch Wiki Skin that would integrate Echo extension better and thus making the ping notifications available on the Wiki, though the development is stalled from what I know. If one would like to peek on it, here is the GitHub issue.

Development has stalled on this, and at the moment our main development priority is getting the Wiki onto MediaWiki 1.39 when it comes out. Once we have 1.39 installed and all the dust has settled I'll resume looking into integrating the Echo extension with the skin.

It kinda agree with that, because if we added something everyone already knew there would'nt really be a point in adding it unless someone else that didn't know looked at that page.
SpaghettiAG852097- (talk | contribs) 03:00, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
I agree with that too. Also, just so you know you forgot to add the unresolved.
Python_master20 (talk | contribs) 03:08, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
Well, on this case it is meant as a way to fence unnecessary new pages by new users, though the wording of example is a bit off in my opinion. Notability is a core part of this wiki as it's a selective place, and it's not as same as popularity. (see Notability as judged by Wikipedia, though Scratch Wiki is not Wikipedia so take with a pinch of salt).
If you still didn't acknowledge why is that has to be a rule, imagine if all the people started to write about their own forgotten, dusty projects around there. Not everyone knows those, but also not something informative or makes sense have on a wiki at all. But, that was the case before the introduction of the S:UGC policy, which outright banned user-generated content outside userspaces to create consistency among mainspace articles.
Feel free to see all the relatable mess with S:NOSP here: Relax S:NOSP even more.
Ahmetlii logo.gif ahmetlii  Talk  Contributions  Directory
21:48, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
I changed the wording a few months before this topic was posted from 'the majority of users' to 'a significant amount of users'. Now looking back at that edit, the wording might be a bit vague on how many users 'significant' might be. I think it could be changed to state that notable Scratch topics are significant to the program or website.

SpiderLogo.png Vdiu | Talk | Contributions | Scratch Profile 10:59, 28 November 2022 (UTC)

So yes or no according to you?
SpiderLogo.png Vdiu | Talk | Contributions | Scratch Profile 10:10, 30 November 2022 (UTC)
I'd err on no, at least not as a template. We use Andrew's unofficial 1.4 archive for old posts, but something like an unofficial Scratch Extension is a different level, IMHO. (despite the fact that I've seen many people linking it on the projects)
Ahmetlii logo.gif ahmetlii  Talk  Contributions  Directory
20:07, 30 November 2022 (UTC)
Well, the Scratch Team has noticed turbowarp and made some changes to make it more scratch-friendly, but technically Andrew's archive is a unofficial too, a extension isn't much different. And not all scratch policies are enforced on the wiki so...?
SpiderLogo.png Vdiu | Talk | Contributions | Scratch Profile 15:02, 16 December 2022 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── That's true, but it says on the same page you linked that "TurboWarp is not affiliated with the Scratch Team in any way". The External Programs template is designed to be used for linked websites "not trusted by Scratch or hosted by Wikipedia", which definitely applies to turbowarp. It seems contradictory to have a template suggesting to use a site that another one warns may not be safe.

That said, we know pretty much for a fact that turbowarp is trustworthy and safe. Also, although they haven't endorsed it, the Scratch Team seems to be completely fine with turbowarp. Such a template would definitely be useful. So I'm conflicted, but I'm leaning towards supporting this.

Did something happen to the wiki?

I'm noticing a lot of little changes - JS is taking longer to load on a page, I now have autocorrect while editing, it says edit source in the pencil drop-down instead of edit. And most importantly (and sadly) there’s no syntax highlighting in the editing. Everything is completely black…

I noticed the same thing. I checked the recent changes and there werent lots of edits. For me, I still cant use auto-correct. But when I click the pencil it says edit not edit source. Maybe its fixed now because for me the edit thing is ok.
SpaghettiAG852097- (talk | contribs) 00:42, 6 December 2022 (UTC)

January Featured Images

 Unresolved (see all...)

Hello everyone! It's time to decide on featured images for January. If you have any suggestions, please leave them below. Please also include an explanation for why you think the image(s) that you suggest should be featured.

What can I suggest?

You can suggest any image(s) on the English Scratch Wiki that have not been featured previously.

How do I tell if an image has already been featured?

It will have the {{featured}} template on it, shown as a star icon in the top right corner of the image page.

Is there a limit to the number of images I can suggest?

No. However, please don't suggest too many... :P

Even though it is several years inactive, Scratch Wiki:Community Portal/Holiday themes recommends not to create logos for religious holidays. Even if there was one, I do not think they would be related to the Wiki's content much.
Jammum Icon.png Jammum (💬 Talk - ✍️ Contribs - 🐱 Scratch) 15:56, 16 December 2022 (UTC)
It wouldnt be fair to have a logo for Christmas and not for other holidays, it would take a long time to create a logo for each holiday and a lot of people might not even know about some holidays. Therefore, i think it would be best to not add a Christmas logo. But the logo you created looks amazing by the way :)
Python_master20 (talk | contribs) 23:32, 16 December 2022 (UTC)
+1. It probably shouldn't be an official Wiki celebration. For example, I don't celebrate Christmas and relevant holidays. However, I think that celebrating Scratch Day/Month (often around May) or the 15th anniversary of Scratch Wiki (on 06 December 2023) would be a better idea.

  • Maybe a template that people could to articles that says that they reviewed the article and edited it and found no mistakes there. It would be helpful because it would let people know that someone found no mistakes and its most likely to have no mistakes.
  • A barnstar or something kinda like they have on wikipedia to let people know that they made good edits or to let people know they made a mistake.

The thing above is a issue, everyone makes mistakes. Multiple editors reading articles is better than 1 editor reading it, missing some possible mistakes and marking it as flawless so others skip it.
As for the barnstars, you can use User:Dominic305/Templates/Trout Selector and User:Dominic305/Templates/Barnstar/Selector or User:Vdiu/Cookie Selector. You just have to put it on your userpage and it will work.

Also, there are a almost 100 topics on the communtiy portal and if you scroll all the way up it says "Size of Community Portal: 125,514 bytes. Time to archive!" so shouldnt we archive it now? Thank you, Happy New Year! It feels kind of weird that it's 2023. Seems futuristic. We're now closer to 2030 than to 2015.

Replace the editing tips in the Help Box with a link to the Wiki tutorial

Yes Resolved (since 18:00, 3 January 2023 (UTC))

The help box for this talk page contains a section about Wiki formatting. I think that it might make the help box unnecessarily long, and could be redundant to the cheatsheet or the welcome tutorial. Additionally, most users who post here have already know basic editing knowledge, so I think it could be replaced with a link to the welcome tutorial (for users who have already not read it), which contains both basic editing knowledge and talk page formatting information.
Jammum Icon.png Jammum (💬 Talk - ✍️ Contribs - 🐱 Scratch) 17:09, 3 January 2023 (UTC)

I've collapsed it and made the title link to the cheatsheet.

Edit Source

Yes Resolved (since 16:59, 4 January 2023 (UTC))

Idk if its just for me but whenever I go to edit instead of saying "edit" it says "edit source" does anyone know why that is happening for me? Edit: Now when i click the pencil it gives me 2 options both edit, and edit source.
SpaghettiAG852097- Logo.jpeg SpaghettiAG852097- talkcontribsprofile 01:43, 4 January 2023 (UTC)

That's weird. It's not happening to me.
Jackson49 (talk | contribs) 02:46, 4 January 2023 (UTC)
You must have turned on VisualEditor. "Edit" will use the visual editor while "Edit source" will use the source editor. You can disable it in the Editing section of Special:Preferences.

New User Log Glitch

Yes Resolved (since 09:37, 12 January 2023 (UTC))

If you check the user log, it says user Prot0555 was created today (11 January 2023), however, the date of the timestamp of the standard welcome message is yesterday, 10 Jan 2023. When you search for users created yesterday and earlier, it shows up with today's date.
SpiderLogo.png Vdiu | Talk | Contributions | Scratch Profile 07:16, 11 January 2023 (UTC)

I might not see the date difference, it might be because of timezone differences; the user might be created when your timezone's day was ahead of UTC when the user was created.
Jammum Icon.png Jammum (💬 Talk - ✍️ Contribs - 🐱 Scratch) 07:21, 11 January 2023 (UTC)
Oh. So the log isn't in UTC?
SpiderLogo.png Vdiu | Talk | Contributions | Scratch Profile 10:31, 11 January 2023 (UTC)
Your user date settings might not be set to UTC, which causes the software to show localized time (as provided by you) in special pages. Check out Appearance -> Time Offset in Preferences.

Replying System

Yes Resolved (since 08:31, 14 January 2023(UTC))

Why dont we have a reply button for talk page messages like Wikipedia? I know, this is not Wikipedia but it would be helpful as you would not have to indent or outdent.
SpaghettiAG852097- Logo.jpeg SpaghettiAG852097- talkcontribsprofile 14:28, 13 January 2023 (UTC)

There is a MediaWiki extension called DiscussionTools that includes the reply feature that Wikipedia uses. Additionally, this Wiki is being upgraded to a new MediaWiki version (1.39 from 1.35) in the next few months, which would allow the extension to be supported here.

Can you change your Wiki signature

I was just wondering if it's possible to change your wiki siggy.

Porcupine2009 (talk | contribs) 18:04, 13 January 2023 (UTC)

Short answer: Yes. There is even a simple wizard, made by bigpuppy.
Long answer if you don't want to use the wizard:
  • First, create a subpage in your userspace for the signature (for example: User:Porcupine2009/sig would be perfectly in order. Easiest way to create a page quickly: search it on the Wiki and press the red link to create it.)
  • Then, fill it with whatever you want! You can use others' signatures as a layout as well - but please attribute them in some way, for example in your edit summary. And, the signature should comply with rules outlined in the S:SIG.
  • After saving your changes in the page, create another subpage (example: User:Porcupine2009/minisig), and follow the instructions at S:GOODSIG.
  • Finally you're good to go! Just one little thing, go to Special:Preferences -> User Profile -> Signatures and put {{SUBST:User:Porcupine2009/minisig}} under "New Signature" section. Also tick off "Treat signature as wikitext (without an automatic link)" box.

Scratch Modifications

What are our rules around articles on Scratch Modifications? We have one on Insanity but not Turbowarp. Confusion.
Han614698 H Logo.png han614698 talkcontribsprofile 21:12, 15 January 2023 (UTC)

There's a moratorium for creating new articles about user-generated content, however existing articles before the rule remain as per grandfather clause.

21:21, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
Yeah, I vaguely remember that. Can you link to where the moratorium was decided?
Han614698 H Logo.png han614698 talkcontribsprofile 21:34, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
S:NPP#Modifications mentions it and this is the edit where that section was revised in light of the ban. I'm having more trouble finding the actual discussion where the ban was decided (since it was at least 5 years ago at this point) but that should be official enough for your purposes.

Email options grammar mistake

Yes Resolved (since 05:37, 21 January 2023 (UTC))

Hello,

I noticed a mistake in the preferences in the email options section. It says "Email address is optional, but is needed for password resets, should you forget your password." The "should you forget your password" part does not really make sense. I am not able to edit it since I am a Wikian so I am telling on the community portal so someone else can edit it.

Thanks,

Edit: I meant to post this is admin/ew requests but I accidentally posted it here
SpaghettiAG852097- Logo.jpeg SpaghettiAG852097- talkcontribsprofile 03:43, 21 January 2023 (UTC)

It is pulled through TranslateWiki strings, so the issue is rather lying on MediaWiki software rather than extensions developed by bcrats. Feel free to search and change that script on there, but I don't think that there's a grammar issue. "Should you" (also called as "Should with inversion") is a grammatically valid expression, used on formal situations, and is equivalent of conditional sentence. In other words, "should you forget your password" is another way of saying "if you forget your password".

No, in fact there are 112 active users

Still seems pretty active to me. Maybe a bit less active than it was a few months ago, but I've see periods of relative inactivity quite often. That doesn't mean that it's dead.

Update on the MediaWiki version upgrade

Hi everyone,

I have mentioned before that we intend to upgrade the Wiki to MediaWiki 1.39. The main thing standing in our way was upgrading all of our custom logic and checking for anything that would be affected by the breaking changes. I am happy to report that I was able to set up a Wiki with all of our custom extensions, and all previously identified issues have been resolved. Some more testing will still be needed to make sure that there aren't any other breaking changes (version 1.39 seems to have a lot of them), but with any luck I'll have another update in a week or two. Thank you to our engineering team for their work in bringing everything up to date, especially kenny2scratch and apple502j.

Thank you everyone for your patience.
