"File" redirects here. For the Scratch file format, see Scratch File Format.
The file button
This article or section documents the current version of Scratch (version 3.0). For this article in Scratch 2.0, see File Menu (2.0). For this article in Scratch 1.4, see File Menu (1.4).

The File Menu is a drop-down menu with options about creating, saving, downloading, and uploading projects.

Online Editor Features

New

This will create a new project in the editor. When signed in, it will not overwrite the existing project, which will be saved before a new project is created. When signed out, the existing project will be overwritten.

Save now

Save now saves all of the changes made to the project since the previous state. If an Internet connection is available, the save will be updated to the server properly; if the Internet cannot be accessed or the project is too large a message will appear saying "Project could not save." with options to try again or download it.

Save as a copy

Save as a copy generates a totally separate, identical project to the one opened in the editor. If the project is owned by someone other than the user logged in, this button will say "Remix" and it will function like the remix button.

Load from your computer

Load from your computer is a feature that allows one to upload projects that one has saved on their computer to the Scratch Website. The file extension for a Scratch 3.0 project is .sb3; Scratch 2.0 projects with the extension .sb2 and Scratch 1.x projects with the extension .sb can also be uploaded into the online editor.

Note Note: The uploaded project will replace the contents of the current project.

Save to your computer

Save to your computer allows one to download projects from the online editor to their computer, which can then be uploaded, shared, or edited offline at a later time.
