Exploring all projects

The Explore feature (commonly referred to as trending) allows users to find projects or studios that might interest them. After a user has chosen whether to explore projects or studios, they can also choose one of eight categories (based on Project Types) to focus on. Finally, one may choose from three modes for selecting different sorts of projects or studios in the same category.

The Explore page shows 16 results (either projects or studios) when it is loaded, and 16 more each time a "Load More" button is clicked.[1] There is a limit to the total amount of results (projects or studios) that can be displayed, which is equivalent to 10 000 results, or 625 pages of 16 each.

Categories

There are seven categories on the Explore page, each showing different types of projects or studios.

All

This category potentially includes "all" projects or studios, though it is unknown exactly what that means. Some users have recently started tagging their projects as #all, though it is unlikely that this has any actual effect on the trending algorithm.

Keywords

The categories "Animations", "Art", "Games", "Music", and "Stories" each show projects which include the category's name in their title or in their Project Information and Help text. The exact purpose of these studio categories is unknown, though it is possible that they display studios which include projects from the corresponding project category.

Tutorials

The Tutorials category shows projects which include the word "Tutorial" in their title or in their Project Information and Help text. The exact purpose of this studio category is unknown, though it is possible that it displays studios which include projects from the Tutorials project category.

Tag

On the 27th of September 2013[2] an update was made that added the option to search for a project by its tag. Before this was added some people campaigned for this feature because it could give more of a use to tags.[3] On July 8th, 2016, the explore page was updated so that one could no longer search by tag. Now, a tag can be searched for by using the Search Bar.

Selection Modes

There are three categories on the Explore page for selecting projects or studios based on their age, activity, and popularity. The active mode can be changed using a drop-down menu in the top-right part of the Explore page.

Trending

This mode selects projects that have received a high amount of loves and favorites in a short period of time. The projects are sorted via how many loves and favorites they have, in proportion to the amount of time they have been shared. The trending mode is the default mode. The exact algorithm used for this is not disclosed to Scratchers.

Popular

This mode selects projects that have very high amounts of loves and favorites (Usually in the 1000s and above), via how many loves and favorites they have.

Recent

This mode selects projects that have been recently shared. These projects are usually shared on the same day as the user is viewing it.

Sort By Filter

Below is an image showing the Sort By drop down box. In order to sort results by time periods, one could simply click the button next to "Sort by:" and another option would appear (in this case, it is "This month"). By clicking "This month" all the projects from the current month month would appear, the same rule applied for "This week" except only projects or studios created this week would appear. This feature is no longer available in Scratch 3.0, but one can still explore recent projects by filtering it using the dropdown box, which is usually set to popular as default, but can be changed to trending or recent.
