Since June 9th, 2021, one of Scratch's image hosting subdomains, cdn2.scratch.mit.edu, started having problems. This caused the broken thumbnail and profile picture bug. It was suspected that it was related to Fastly, the service that powers the domain, experienced an outage the day prior to the issue.[1] From then, many profile pictures and thumbnails had stopped working. Soon after,[when?] the problems largely stopped, and many profile pictures returned to their original state and the thumbnail problem was largely fixed, but many profile pictures were still corrupted. Many people trying to change their profile picture would have it turn into the default Scratch Cat profile picture.[2]
Eventually,[when?] the Scratch Team triggered the Maintenance Mode on the main website, however the forums are not affected. [3] and when a user tried to access it, they were greeted with an error telling them to reload the website, check Scratch's social media for updates, and to use the Scratch App to make projects instead.[3]
