2005

October

  • 21 — The first known Scratch project is created.[1]

2007

March

  • 5 — The oldest project still available, Weekend, was uploaded.

May

  • 15 — The first stable public version of Scratch, 1.0, was released.[3]

August

  • 6 — Automatic credit in remixes were implemented.[6]
  • 7 — Images donated by LEGO became available.[7]
  • 16 — The ability to post blocks on the Scratch Forums was added.[9]

September

  • 16 — Basic gallery features were implemented.[10]

October

  • 24 — The ability to flag comments as inappropriate was implemented.[11]

December

  • 7 — After reports of numerous bugs, Scratch 1.2.1 was released.[13]
  • 17 — The Scratch Website became available in multiple languages.[14]

2008

April

  • 29 — The Ignore List, new gallery features, character count in comment box, and ability to reply to comments were implemented.[15]

  • 24 — Scratch 1.3.1 was released.[18]

December

  • 6 — The first Scratch Day event was hosted (under the name Scratcher Meetup @ MIT).[20]
  • 12 — Signatures in the Scratch Forums were temporarily removed due to spammers using them to post inappropriate links.[21]

2009

May

  • 16 — The second Scratch Day event was hosted.[22]
  • 31 — The Newest Projects row was put back, but only available to Scratchers when they were logged in.[23]
  • 31 — The Top Downloaded row was removed.[25]

  • 11 — Operation: Cleanup is completed.[29]

April

  • 21 — The official project with the one millionth ID was shared on the Scratch Website.[31]

May

  • 19 — The first Community Moderator elections were held.[33]
  • 21 — The election results were released.[34]

June

  • 3 — The Scratch Wiki was released on wiki.scratch.mit.edu.[35]
  • 10 — The Scratch Forums received spam attacks from a group of trolls. In response, the Scratch Team decided to disable images.[36]
  • 11 — The second Operation: Cleanup is launched on the TBGs.[37]
  • 13 — Images were re-enabled for those that were not New Scratchers.[39]

July

  • 6 — The second Operation: Cleanup on the TBG ends.[40]

August

October

  • 20 — The second Community moderator elections were held.[44]
  • 22 — The election results were released.[45]
  • 27 — The third Operation: Cleanup is started on the TBG forum.[46]

November

  • 11 — Archived forums are available from the jump to tool at the bottom of every page.[48]
  • 15 — The Newest Projects row on the Front Page displays a random selection of projects.[49]

2011

April

  • 26 — Users banned on the Scratch Forums can no longer visit the Text Based Games Forums.[51]

July

  • 21 — The third Community Moderator elections were held.[52]
  • 22 — The election results were released.[53]

August

  • 27 — The official project with the two millionth ID was shared on the Scratch Website.[55]
  • 27-28 — The Scratch Website was temporarily set in read-only mode due to Hurricane Irene. The forums were temporarily shut down.[56][57]

November

December

  • 26 — [img] (Image tags) are disabled on the Scratch Forums. They remained enabled in signatures during this time.[59]

2012

January

  • 18 — Scratch protested SOPA and PIPA by featuring anti-SOPA projects, and putting up a banner saying "The Scratch Team values a free and open internet, so it opposes PIPA and SOPA".[60]
  • 27 — The Block Plugin was added to the Scratch Forums, which allows, in [scratchblocks] BBCode tags, scripts to be typed as they appear in Scratch, and they will parse.[62]

February

  • 15 — Post counts on the forums are now shown in levels, instead of the exact post count. Users with below 100 posts have the exact count shown; otherwise it shows 100+, 500+, or 1000+. This does not apply to the Text Based Games Forums, as some games require users knowing their or others' exact post count(s).[64]

April

  • 3 — Demosthenes retires from Community Moderator position.[65]
  • 5 — Nominations for the Spring 2012 Community Moderator elections begin.[66]
  • 9 — The candidates for the Community Moderator elections are announced.[67]
  • 11 — Voting begins for the Community Moderator elections. The vote was open from 11AM to 11PM, Scratch Time.[68]
  • 12 — The results from the Community Moderator elections were announced. The winners were Lucario621, Scimonster, and sparks. They did not begin moderating until the 18th, however.[69]
  • 13 — Image tags re-enabled.[39]

May

  • 19 — Scratch Day 2012 at MIT.[71]

August

  • 30 — Scratch Forums search index rebuilt, in the hopes of fixing some issues with the search.[73]

September

  • 10 — Flash Player updated to release candidate status, and redone in Scratch 2.0 styling.[74]

October

  • 18 — The Flash project player becomes the default.[75]

December

  • 23 — The official project with the three millionth ID was shared on the Scratch Website.[76]

2013

  • 6-8 — Both the Scratch 1.4 website and 2.0 beta website were shut down for the transition to Scratch 2.0.[79][80]
  • 9 — Scratch 2.0 was released to the public.[81]

August

October

  • 7 — The Community Moderator program ends, and they were replaced by the Scratch Mentors, with the first Mentors chosen being ErnieParke, LiFaytheGoblin, and P110.[83]
  • 27 — The official project with the 4 millionth ID was shared to the Scratch website.[84]

December

  • 9-15 — Scratch was featured in the Hour of Code.[85]
  • 10 — The search engine was changed to Google.

2014

January

  • 10 — Scratchers were given the ability to opt in/out of a beta project player.

March

  • 15(?) — The official project with the 5 millionth ID was shared.

May

June

  • 4 — The footer of the main website was changed, and the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy were added.[87]
  • 10 — Scratch 1.4 was added to Raspberry Pi, with an extension block for its GPIO pins.[88][89]

July

  • 16 — The official project with the 6 millionth ID was shared.
  • 28 — Creative Characters Camp ends.[90]
  • 30 — ScratchJr is officially released to the public.

September

  • 24 — Follower, following, and profile comment counts were removed from profiles.[91]

October

  • 15 — Spike in traffic due to Europe Code Week.[92]
  • 29 — Fixed Chrome keyboard lag bug, prevent invalid characters from erasing comments, fixed remix count on Top Remixed sometimes shows as on, project & Studio owners should no longer able to report their own stuff, add “Be Honest” to Community Guidelines, put grey box around sprite thumbnails to make “invisible sprites” visible.[93]

November

  • 12 — New sprites, backdrops, and sounds in editor, optimized graphics in editor, new "Pong" tutorial in editor, Add Scratch Press page to footer.[94]
  • 15 — The official project with the 7 millionth ID was shared.

December

  • 17 — New sprites, backdrops, and sounds in editor.

2015

January

  • 6 — The five millionth account was created.[97]

February

  • 12 — A new Valentine's themed tutorial and sprites were added. The tutorial can be found here.

April

  • 16 — A re-design for the Tips window was implemented.[99]

May

  • 9 — Scratch Day 2015.[100]

July

  • 4 — The Scratch Website reached 10 million projects and a special Scratch Design Studio was created for this occasion. This studio can be found here.
  • 15 — An "About" Tab was added to the navigation bar.[101]
  • 15 — A project filter based on language was added to the "Explore" Tab.
  • 26 — End of Mix and Match Camp.

August

  • 8 — Front Page Curator Shifts were shortened from two weeks, to one week.[102]
  • 11 — The Picoboard and Lego WeDo extensions were updated.
  • 15 — End of Scratch2015AMS Conference.

September

  • 28 — "Race to Finish" tutorial was added.[104]

October

  • 5 — Hora do Codigo Brasil (The Brazilian Hour of Code) Begins.
  • 9 — Europe Code Week Begins.
  • 14 — The project with the 11 millionth ID was shared.
  • 26 — The Scratch Team completely redesigned the Scratch Homepage.[105]

December

  • 7 — International Computer Science Education Week 2015 and the Hour of Code began. Scratch was featured in the event for its third year in a row.[106]
  • 13 — Computer Science Education Week 2015 ended.
  • 21 — The Record Project Video feature was added to the Scratch Program.[107]

  • 31 — The SDS Curators released their last SDS, which later turned out to be an April Fools joke.

April

  • 1 — The Scratch Team released its April Fools joke that the Scratch Cat went on vacation. Scratchers had to create projects on where they think the Scratch Cat was. The Scratch Cat left clues on where they were on their profile page.

October

  • 15 — Scratch reached its 100th SDS.[113]

December

  • 5 — International Computer Science Education Week 2017 began. Scratch was featured in the event.[114]
  • 11 — International Computer Science Education Week 2017 ended.

2017

April

  • 1 — The Scratch Wiki celebrated April Fool's Day by changing many pages' content to absurd joke pages. The original content could be found at the bottom of the page and this lasted for one day.

May

July

August

  • 7 — Third part of Scratch Camp: Down Deep began.[118]
  • 13 — Scratch Camp: Down Deep ended.

November

  • 30 — The Scratch Team announced a new userscript policy, in which userscripts and browser extensions for Scratch could no longer be advertised.[119]

December

  • 4 — Computer Science Education Week began. Scratch was featured in the event.[120]
  • 10 — Computer Science Education Week ended.

2018

January

  • 24 — The Scratch Team posted an official YouTube video, where speakvisually plays projects by the Scratch Community in zero-gravity.[121]

February

  • 15 — It was announced that cloud data would only have 128 characters at most in Scratch 3.0. Hexadecimal numbers will be prohibited.[122]
  • 16 — The Scratch Wiki at wiki.scratch.mit.edu was transferred over to en.scratch-wiki.info.[123]

March

  • 22 — The amount of shared projects exceeded 30 million.[124]

April

  • 9 — Scratch reached its 300th front page curator.[125]
  • 21 — The "Recently Shared Projects" row on the Front Page was removed.[126]

  • 10 — The cloud data limit was raised to 256 characters.[129]

  • 18 — The Scratch Team implemented a new update, changing the "Load from your computer" action to replace the current project instead of creating a new one. This was based on user feedback.[132]
  • 19 — The Scratch Team posted an announcement about new bug fixes and updates.[133]

July

August

  • 1 — The Scratch Team updated the sound editor based on feedback from the community, and removed the echo effect.[135]

2020

January

  • 11 — There was a disruption with emails where emails from the Scratch Team didn't send properly. It was fixed at 8am EST.[136] Also, an orange/red (depending on the screen) banner saying "We are experiencing a disruption with email delivery. If you are not receiving emails from us, please try after 8am EST." was added at the top of every page on the Scratch Website.[137] When the disruption was fixed, the banner was removed.

February

  • 13 — The Scratch Team changed the paint editor to make aligning to the center more precise.[138]

May

  • 14 — The Scratch Team added several Sprites to the sprite library. They were originally from the "Character Remix" studio featuring costumes made by Scratch Team members Zinnea, KayOh, dsquare, and pondermake. [139] They included 2 character packs with multiple costumes and 7 individual sprites: Kia, Luca, Noor, Sasha, Tatina, Trisha, and Taylor.[140]
  • 28[141]-30[142] — The official project with the 400,000,000th ID was shared.

  • 11 — The official project with the 500 millionth ID was shared.[145]
  • 31 — The 500000th forum topic was created.[146]

April

  • 9 — 200 million project comments have been made.[147]

May

June

  • 18 — Two new emojis, _blm_ and _pride_, were added.[150]
  • 25 — The studio with the 30 millionth ID was created.[151]

July

August

  • 2 — Scratch Camp: Try Something New began.[154]
  • 23 — Profile comments were moved from Scratch's physical servers to a host in the cloud. Studio and project comments will be moved at separate times.[155]

September

November

  • 11 — The project with the 600 millionth ID was shared.[157]

2022

January

  • 18 — The first Activity Swap began.[158]
  • 31(?) — Weekend, the oldest project on Scratch, was taken down, briefly making Sandwhich the oldest shared project.[159]

February

April

  • 12 — Censor outage occurs, resulting in comments being temporarily disabled sitewide

May

  • 16-21 — Scratch Week 2022 took place
  • 19 — The Scratch Team hosted a celebration of Scratch's 15th birthday

July

August

  • 1 — Scratch Camp: Fantastical Fantasies began
  • 8 — Project Save & Level Codes forum was released.

2023

February

  • 3 — The Black History Month 2023 studio was created and the Love, Favourite and Remix icons were changed.

March

  • 3 — Maintenance work on the front page started; no projects or studios were added onto it.[163]

May

June

  • 28 — The Scratch Team implemented the feature to change from normal blocks to Color Contrast blocks. On the same day, the navigation bar changed from blue to purple.[164]

July

August

  • Throughout the month — Several downtimes occurred to various parts of the Scratch Website for backend updates. These happened on the 11th to the 13th, the 18th to the 20th, and the 25th to the 27th.

November

  • 30 — After a significant downtime of the forums from the 23rd to the 30th of November, the Discussion Forums were updated. This updated included the addition of the main site filterbot to the forums, the removal of a mobile view, and the addition of a posting restriction for New Scratchers on the Discussion Forums.

2024

April

  • 12 — The official project with an ID of one billion was made and shared.[165]

May

  • 6-10 — Scratch Week 2024 took place
