:To be brutally honest, I don't like the idea. I believe that people should figure out their own style of welcome template, instead of all following one standard. Also, if people start using it and then you change it, you're effectively editing the messages of multiple people at once, all over the place. You'll notice that my welcome template is a) the ''first'' one, and b) the only one that has the image to one side. Then someone else made one and everybody copied their style instead of ''learning'' how to make their own.
:I think you can see by now that I really dislike - not user templates, but user templates ''that control other user templates''. This, I think, is the crucial difference. I'm fine with customhacker's Inactive Template, since there's nothing bad about it - it's simply something to show that you'll be away. However, your idea is something that controls how ''other'' user templates look. That is much more dangerous.

::If you look closely, you’ll notice a few things:
*The main div has <code>class="mw-collapsible"</code> and <code>id="mw-customcollapsible-sidebar"</code>. This makes it collapsible, and specifies that it has custom labels that refer to the div called “sidebar”.
*The “collapse” label has <code>class="mw-customtoggle-sidebar"</code>, meaning “this is a collapse/expand link for ‘sidebar’.”
*The “+” label also has <code>class="mw-customtoggle-sidebar"</code>, meaning “this is another collapse/expand link for ‘sidebar’.”
*I deliberately put the “+” label ''behind the sidebar'' so that it would be hidden until the sidebar collapsed.

:uh *shrug* sure! I’ll just stop using indents here so I don’t have to type a colon too many times :)

So when you’re making a template, you just put some standard text that you want to include everywhere. So let’s dissect Cool for a bit:
 {{msgnw:Cool}}
So the emoji is just an emoji - no trickery there. Then there’s a bit of bold - no trickery there.

The trickery comes in the <code><nowiki>{{{1|Cool}}}</nowiki></code>. Let’s say you do <nowiki>{{example|test}}</nowiki>. Anywhere inside there, if there is a {{{1}}}, it is replaced with a “test” word - so it is basically a function parameter. If you want to specify something that that parameter should be if it’s empty (only white space or of zero length) then you add a pipe (|) and the default value.
<br/>So <nowiki>{{{1|Cool}}}</nowiki> produces Cool unless parameter “1” is specified.

Then you have a close to the bold, and then there’s a &lt;noinclude> - that makes sure that part’s contents are never shown when ''transcluded'' - only when the template page is directly viewed. The <nowiki>{{/doc}}</nowiki> just transcludes Template:Cool'''/doc''', and there’s a category  in there too that shouldn’t be put on normal pages.

On some templates you will see an &lt;includeonly> tag - what this does is the exact opposite of noinclude - it makes sure the stuff inside is ''only'' shown when transcluded - and never when viewed directly.

On user templates you might see &lt;onlyinclude> tags - these are not the opposite of noinclude - but rather the inversion - it makes sure that only that content is transcluded.

Magic words - these are things that do special things when placed. There are theee main types of magic words - behavior switches, variables, and parser functions.

Behavior switches are anything in double underscores - like <nowiki>__TOC__</nowiki> makes the table of contents appear whether it likes it or not.

Variables are usually things that look like templates but are in all caps, like <nowiki>{{CURRENTTIMESTAMP}}</nowiki> displays the current time stamp, like this: {{CURRENTTIMESTAMP}}.

Parser functions are usually things that look like templates but have a colon (:) and sometimes a hash (#), like <nowiki>{{gender: username|male return string|female return string|unspecified return string}}</nowiki> produces the gender of the user as set in their preferences, like this: <nowiki>{{gender:customhacker|he|she|they}}</nowiki> produces {{gender:customhacker|he|she|they}}.

Parser functions. These are not built in - they come from a MediaWiki extension.
*<nowiki>{{#if: string | value if string is not empty or pure white space | value if string is pure white space or empty}} - this is kinda self-explanatory. If the thing you pass first is empty or only white space (white space includes spaces, new lines, and word-joiners), then it will return the last parameter. Otherwise, it will return the second to last parameter. This is mainly used on templates that can show a reason:</nowiki>
<pre>{{#if: {{{1|}}} | Reason: {{{1}}} }}</pre>
:<nowiki>Take careful note that there is a pipe (|) in {{{1|}}} - this makes the parameter become blank if not specified, instead of just showing up as {{{1}}}.
*<nowiki>{{#ifeq: string | string2 | value if strings are equal | value if strings are not equal}} - this checks whether string1 and string2 are equal, and gives the second to last parameter if they are - and the last parameter otherwise. This is used in templates that support cat=no:</nowiki>
<pre>{{#ifeq: {{{cat}}} | no | <!-- leave this parameter blank! --> | [[Category:Whatever]] }}</pre>
*<nowiki>{{#expr: mathematical expression}} - evaluates a mathematical expression. Logical expressions are also supported - 3 and 4 returns bitwise 3&4, while 1 and 0 returns 0 (false). Not used much.</nowiki>
