Can I create a really nice-looking [[Scratch Wiki:Elections November 2014]] page using good CSS styling and formatting for the elections? For some reason I want to make the page.<scratchsig>Turkey3</scratchsig> 01:18, 24 September 2014 (UTC)

It appears that ''n''th curator is grammatically incorrect. Take the latest one. Two-hundred-ninety-sixth should not be that. It is incorrect. It should be two-hundred-and-ninety-sixth. <br/>{{User:Banana439monkey/sig}} 16:54, 16 March 2018 (UTC)
:Sure. You can draft it as a subpage of your userpage. Please just include all the info on the current page ([[Scratch Wiki:Elections/October 2014]]), but add anything else you think would be important.<scratchsig>jvvg</scratchsig> 01:20, 24 September 2014 (UTC)

:Ninja'd! :P<scratchsig>jvvg</scratchsig> 15:17, 24 September 2014 (UTC)

:Talking through the mouse is done with the HTML "title" attribute. So this:

:::::Per our policy, I am not allowed to distribute the list of candidates yet, as we are still discussing it and the nomination period is not over. == A new question about ScratchR... ==
+
How do you add an archive to a talk page?<scratchsig>NYCDOT</scratchsig> 19:49, 29 March 2018 (UTC)
 +
:Hi! You can make a subpage of your talk page named "[[User talk:NYCDOT/Archive]]" or "[[NYCDOT/Archive 1]]" or something like that. Then, you can copy and paste the contents of your talk page into your new archive. After that, you can delete the messages in your talk page. Alternatively, you could use the move button.<br/>{{User:Bigpuppy/Real Signature}} 21:35, 29 March 2018 (UTC)
 +
::Thank you so much!<scratchsig>NYCDOT</scratchsig> 22:48, 29 March 2018 (UTC)

Remember jvvg how you uploaded a copy of ScratchR and shared it in the CP? I just unzipped it and got a .vmdk and a .ovf file. I also downloaded virtual box to run the vmdk, and added the vmdm: http://tinypic.com/m/idhj82/1<br />
+
== Erm... ==
After that, I ran the vmdk and got: http://tinypic.com/m/idhj6o/1

I'm not sure what to do after this to open the Scratch 1.4 website, or if I'm doing anything wrong. Can you help me? Also, I'm running OSX Mavericks. <scratchsig>ErnieParke</scratchsig> 20:14, 24 September 2014 (UTC)

:That's odd. You should be getting an OVA file by itself.<scratchsig>jvvg</scratchsig> 21:56, 24 September 2014 (UTC)

::An .ova file? I'll try redownlaoding ScratchR then.

::In the meanwhile, since several Wikians liked the story I submitted for KrIsMa's speech collection effort earlier in the CP, would you mind if I submitted a CP topic about [[User:ErnieParke/My Idea of a Story‎|a new narrative]]? Or would you consider that off topic? <scratchsig>ErnieParke</scratchsig> 22:52, 24 September 2014 (UTC)

:You use the HTML "title" attribute (this question always comes up here every time he archives his talk lol). For example, this:
 +
<pre><span title="Hi">hOII</span></pre>

:Makes this:
 +
<span title="Hi">hOII</span>

:::You've said that before, too - but since Scimonster is effectively dead and you're partially the face of the Wiki, people naturally see your talking through mouse before Scimonster's - I suppose if you credited Scimonster in the thing itself more people would ask him, but then again they might still ask you since Scimonster won't respond.{{User:Kenny2scratch/sig}} 04:55, 11 April 2018 (UTC)

:I looked at your talk page, and all of the messages it left you are correct. You need to sign your post by leaving your signature (<code><nowiki>~~~~</nowiki></code>) at the end. :In case you're wondering why it doesn't look at the template contents, there are two major reasons:

::Well, I can only give you the bits I know about it, and I only sort of follow the traditional rules. The basic rule is that you need to include all three elements of a chord (1 3 5) in every chord. You also need to avoid certain things, such as parallel fifths or octaves (that's the rule I break most). == Alright then ==
+
Hi! I saw that every time WikiMonitor comments on a talk page, it re-creates the three messages over and over again. You could put the three messages as templates instead to save space and time. Can you change WM to just use user subpage templates? {{User:CrazyBoy826/sig}} 18:40, 8 August 2018 (UTC)
 +
:The space savings would be minimal (a few hundred bytes per message), and I don't see how it would save time. However, this would also lead to having extra dependencies, where old messages would depend on current templates, and this would also mean that if I ever decide to change the message, then it will change for ''everyone'' who has ever received it.<scratchsig>jvvg</scratchsig> 00:52, 9 August 2018 (UTC)
 +
:: I mean new messages will use the template, old ones stay the same. By saving time I mean that more text uploaded will take a longer time to get through. If users want, they can change their bot messages to the template. {{User:CrazyBoy826/sig}} 01:57, 9 August 2018 (UTC)
 +
:::Using templates would also mean that the messages would be cache-dependant, and directly posting them avoids that; besides, templates increase the link indexing that needs to be done, so in reality the space savings are near zero.{{User:Kenny2scratch/sig}} 08:20, 9 August 2018 (UTC)

:The header image looks fine to me. Your browser was probably just trying to display it in the size of the old image. Refreshing the page usually takes care of that. For the citation needed tag, that was probably put back before we had an authoritative source saying what the Scratch 3.0 header would be, so the header was basically us guessing that they would use that header for Scratch 3.0. Since it now is the header, I removed that tag since the Scratch website header can be considered common knowledge.<scratchsig>jvvg</scratchsig> 22:00, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

::Well, at least to get started, I actually had LS97 give me a short crash course in it. I then just started creating stuff with it (my first project was "CodeShare", a website to upload code). :::::Just wondering, how much experience do you have in other languages? If you have significant experience in Java or C(++) then PHP may be difficult for a couple reasons. == How do I use welcome templates? ==
 +
Hey, I noticed you place a welcome template on all new users' talk pages. I made one and I know how to paste it (it's Template:Welcome By EIephant Lover, but with two brackets on either end). I just don't know how you have managed to do one every time. Do you have some sort of bot do it for you or do you just notice when a new user comes and paste it there? For the former, is it possible that I could do this and if so how? For the latter, how can you see when a new user comes? Thanks so much :) <scratchsig>EIephant_Lover</scratchsig> 20:22, 25 January 2019 (UTC)

:You can store your welcome message as a template in your userspace (for example, '''User:JJBullet/Welcome''') and then whenever a new user joins, you can just comment <code><nowiki>{{User:JJBullet/Welcome}}~~~~</nowiki></code> to leave your message. However, it is not possible for you to make your message be included ''automatically'' on new users' talk pages without use of a bot (and we will not approve any such bots). :::As banana pointed out, you should use "Show Preview" to see how things look while you edit. When you save a page, it makes an entry in the page history as well as the [[Special:RecentChanges|recent changes log]] (which a bunch of people look at to monitor how things are going on the Wiki), and saving frequently creates a ton of entries, making it harder to keep track of what's going on. If you want to save your work while you're working, the best thing to do is save it somewhere else (like a Word doc or something).<scratchsig>jvvg</scratchsig> 15:23, 15 August 2019 (UTC)

Hi. I just wanted to inform about WikiMonitor. WikiMonitor doesn't work as well in Scratch Wiki:Sandbox. I have no idea about why the bot doesn't clean the page. For your information.{{User:Ahmetlii/sig}} 19:20, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
 +
:WikiMonitor is a script that is running in the background, and when it sees an edit to the sandbox it will clear it four hours later. However, for various reasons the script stops running (like today, my Pi had to be unplugged to install an air conditioner) and doesn't resume until I manually restart it. In cases where I know it stopped, that's usually pretty quick, but in other cases (such as a power outage when I'm not home or even a power loss that only lasts a second and I don't otherwise notice) I don't know it's not running and thus don't restart it for a while.<scratchsig>jvvg</scratchsig> 04:55, 26 May 2020 (UTC)

== Glitch(?) with ConfirmAccounts ==
 +

 +
Hey jvvg, I'm not sure if you know about this already (I faintly recall talk about a similar glitch in the past), but today I experienced a glitch with ConfirmAccounts — specifically with this account request: https://en.scratch-wiki.info/w/index.php?title=Special:ConfirmAccounts/authors&acrid=6397&wpShowRejects=1
 +

 +
Instead of directing me to the correct profile, the link directed me to a ten-year-old inactive account. I'm glad I checked the Scratch account verification project, as otherwise the correct user would not have gotten notified via Scratch and if the wrong user ever came back to Scratch, they could have been worried that their account had been compromised.
 +

 +
I didn't mention either username here due to the sheer publicity of talk pages, but you can click the link inside the ConfirmAccounts interface to go to the 10-year-old inactive account, and you can go to the Scratch user verification project to find the correct user (it's pretty obvious which user it is due to the similar username to the inactive user).
 +

 +
Again, I remember there being an issue in the past with the system getting confused if a user had two consecutive underscores in their username (if I remember correctly), but I don't remember exactly how that got resolved so I decided to notify you anyway.
 +

 +
Also, while I'm here, do you prefer stuff like this to be posted on your talk page or your Scratch profile?
 +

 +
Thanks! {{e|:)}}<br/>{{User:Bigpuppy/Real Signature}} 03:03, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
 +
:Also, don't get me wrong, it's a rarity that someone has a username like this, so it may not be worth fixing (if it's even possible to fix). {{e|:)}}<br/>{{User:Bigpuppy/Real Signature}} 03:05, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
 +
:That's not the only issue, wfGetLBFactory was deprecated in 1.27, which means by 1.28, it had the potential of being broken. Future updates to MediaWiki will result in ConfirmAccount not working at all unless the modifications are rewritten entirely.  <br/>{{User:Banana439monkey/sig}} 08:40, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
 +
::I'm not sure there's much I can do about this, as this is more of a MediaWiki issue. Ultimately the extension (using the original code) uses a built-in function to convert usernames to the MediaWiki format, which I think eliminates consecutive underscores.<scratchsig>jvvg</scratchsig> 23:24, 30 May 2020 (UTC)
 +
:::Ah, okay. Thanks for replying. If I get directed to a user who probably didn't apply (like this ten-year-old inactive account) again, I'll just check the account confirmation project to make sure it's the right account. Thanks! {{e|:)}}<br/>{{User:Bigpuppy/Real Signature}} 23:27, 30 May 2020 (UTC)

WikiMonitor asked me not to do several edits in a short amount of time, edits on [[User:Col_Cat228]] which is my userpage, when i was just adding and moving stuff to it. Could you ''please'' make it so WikiMonitor has no effects on people's userpages? It's annoying. Thanks <scratchsig>Col_Cat228</scratchsig> 11:47, 26 June 2020 (UTC)

:See: {{user|WikiMonitor|user}}. One of WikiMonitor's purposes is warning users about fast edits. If you don't want to add a notification, simply add <nowiki>{{NoBots}}</nowiki> to your talk page or your main page, but it's not recommended by myself.{{User:Ahmetlii/sig}} 14:03, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
 +
::Col_Cat228, all edits you make to the wiki have to be [[Special:Log/patrol|patrolled]], so it's helpful if people don't make a lot of edits in a short amount of time. WikiMonitor is there for a reason; <u>I recommend you ''do not'' add {{t|NoBots}} to your talk page because you may end up missing some important notifications.</u> Thanks, and thank you for editing the wiki! {{e|:D}}<br/>{{User:Bigpuppy/Real Signature}} 15:59, 26 June 2020 (UTC)

== Thoughts on Making Users Read the Pages Before Requesting Account ==
+
I have been having some problems with my scratch account, the only fix for it may be to create a new one, which I would not like, but may happen nonetheless. I want to ask: Is it possible to change the username of a scratch wiki account so as to reflect the scratch account?
 +
I am asking this as the only fix might be to get a new account, and so I would like the usernames to match.

There has to be ''something'' we could do about this. I am not sure how much control you have over Wiki code, but my idea was that when they read [[S:CONTRIB]] a cookie is stored in their browser and the account will not be requested unless that cookie is present. We could also maybe make usage of Javascript alerts warning that reading the pages is extremely important and determinant on whether or not the account will be accepted or rejected.<scratchsig>Turkey3</scratchsig> 00:59, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
+
I haven't asked anyone else, and this is just an is this possible? question and NOT an actual request to do so yet.
:Unfortunately, I really don't have much control over Wiki code. Since I hardcoded much of the request system software too, it would be hard to change that without going through the whole mess on github.<scratchsig>jvvg</scratchsig> 01:00, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Welcome to my talk page!

Feel free to leave me a message! It can be for anything - about an edit I made, about a community issue, asking me a question, or even just saying hello.

Please keep these in mind
  • If I left a message on your talk page, it does not matter to me whether you respond on your talk page or here.
  • Unless you ask me otherwise, if you leave me a message, I will respond here
  • The Community Guidelines and Scratch Wiki Guidelines still apply here - please follow them.
  • If you leave a disrespectful message, I will remove it without providing a response.
  • I am an administrator; therefore I can delete pages, protect pages, restore deleted pages, and edit protected pages
  • If I made a mistake (of any kind) or WikiMonitor malfunctioned, please try to post your concerns calmly and provide relevant details.
  • Please treat me as you want me to treat you and think about what you post before posting it.
  • I will answer questions not related to the Wiki as long as they're not too personal.

How do you have so many archives and have so many messages on your talk as I don't have a lot?

I've been around for a very long time, so over that time the messages accumulated.

WM's FPC updater script

It appears that nth curator is grammatically incorrect. Take the latest one. Two-hundred-ninety-sixth should not be that. It is incorrect. It should be two-hundred-and-ninety-sixth.

Oh yeah. I just noticed that. That should be fixed

Logoasqwde.png asqwde talk | contribs 12:23, 17 March 2018 (UTC)
No, "two-hundred-ninety-sixth" is grammatically correct. However, I feel like it would be better to simply say 123{{th}} instead of spelling out the number.

Confirmation Code

Hey jvvg, because you accepted my application letter I assume you know the answer to this. Why is my confirmation code not working? Also, how do you talk through a mouse
NYCDOT (talk | contribs)I AM THE ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 21:06, 16 March 2018 (UTC)

Talking through the mouse is done with the HTML "title" attribute. So this:
<span title="talking through mouse">text</span>
Makes this:
text
As for the confirmation code, why do you need one? You can't have more than one account on the Wiki.

I want the confirmation code to work so I can get email notifications for scratch. Where would you put the code for the talking through the mouse? wiki.
NYCDOT (talk | contribs)I AM THE ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 14:16, 17 March 2018 (UTC)
Oh, email notifications... But that doesn't need a confirmation code, you just need to click the link that gets sent to your email. Are you not getting the link? Check your spam folder if that's the case.

Archives

How do you add an archive to a talk page?
NYCDOT (talk | contribs) 19:49, 29 March 2018 (UTC)

Hi! You can make a subpage of your talk page named "User talk:NYCDOT/Archive" or "NYCDOT/Archive 1" or something like that. Then, you can copy and paste the contents of your talk page into your new archive. After that, you can delete the messages in your talk page. Alternatively, you could use the move button.

You can look at Special:ListUsers. If you want to see users that have joined recently, look at Special:Log/newusers.

How to create a message from the mouse

I've seen a large magority of users on the wiki that have a message talking out of your mouse-pointer. Could you help me make it? Thank you in advance! :)
PrincessFlowerTV (talk | contribs) 00:23, 11 April 2018 (UTC)

You use the HTML "title" attribute (this question always comes up here every time he archives his talk lol). For example, this:
<span title="Hi">hOII</span>
Makes this:

hOII

The "title" attribute can go on most HTML elements, I think.

It's funny how everyone associates this with me. I actually got the idea from Scimonster.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 03:48, 11 April 2018 (UTC)
You've said that before, too - but since Scimonster is effectively dead and you're partially the face of the Wiki, people naturally see your talking through mouse before Scimonster's - I suppose if you credited Scimonster in the thing itself more people would ask him, but then again they might still ask you since Scimonster won't respond.

I looked at your talk page, and all of the messages it left you are correct. You need to sign your post by leaving your signature (~~~~) at the end. In yours, it looks like you just included your username, but we need your full Wiki signature (the four tildes I mentioned in the previous sentence) so that there's a uniform experience and we know when you posted it. For example:
This is a post is signed properly.~~~~
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for letting me know. I'm working on improving the detection for what is/isn't a message, and I added this to the list of things to look out for. Also, in the future, if you mark an edit as minor, WM won't check it for a signature.

NOT categorized: Add category via Edit (the same way you edit a page)
ALREADY categorized: You don't need to do

Hello, I'm WikiMonitor, a bot that patrols the Recent Changes. This is just a friendly reminder that it appears you forgot to sign your post in revision 195806 of User talk:Jvvg/sandbox. Please fix this by adding four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your post to insert your signature and remember to sign your posts in the future. Yikes! WM Mistake

I got an incorrect notifacation from WikiMonitor. I did sign my post, even though WM says I did not.

Could you help?
Mrbumppo (talk | contribs) 13:01, 5 May 2018 (UTC)

You actually did not sign your post. WM does not look at the contents of templates. Please sign your posts outside of the template.
In case you're wondering why it doesn't look at the template contents, there are two major reasons:
  • It would take extra processing time, and
  • You could change the template later to not have your signature, and nobody would notice.
Remember to sign your post on the top level next time. Thanks.

There actually was a error, but it was a bit more subtle than that. Mrbumppo added the signature in a later edit, but at that time I hadn't implemented checking for it. However, that has been fixed and should no longer be a problem.

Deleted Images

You deleted my image Scratch-online-editor.png, thinking it was a duplicate of another image. Actually, that image was the offline editor, and this is for the online editor. CrazyBoy826 (Talk|Contribs)

They both look the same to me. Both images have "Join Scratch/Sign In" at the top, while the offline editor does not, so it looks like the original image (the one I said yours is a duplicate off) was also from the online editor.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 22:20, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
It is not a duplicate because above the stage in my image, there is a texxt box, while the other one does not because it is offline.
CrazyBoy826 (talk | contribs)
There are no text boxes in your image that are not in the other image. The only text box I see in your image is the one for the project title, which is also present in the other one (File:Scratch Layout.png).

Which Way Do You Sign Your Username?

Do you sign your username as four tildes or using scratchsig tags?

Use four tildes, that way it also includes the timestamp. WikiMonitor requires that you include the timestamp for it to be considered a valid signature.

A mistake in the FPC list

Hello! Someone told me that there was a mistake in the list of FPCs. The mistake is that an FPC is listed twice. Since we're not supposed to edit some parts of that page (the parts that WikiMonitor edits), I didn't fix the mistake. However, could you please change it? I looked in the history of that page, and it doesn't seem that it's a glitch with WikiMonitor, so that's good.

Transit Systems

I see you are a fan of Transit Systems. So am I! I am in love, repeat, absolute love with the MTA (New York Metro Area). My favorite line is the 7 or the F or the E. What's yours?
NYCDOT Logo.jpg NYCDOT [ Talk Page | Contributions | Directory ] 19:29, 24 June 2018 (UTC)

I've only been to NYC a few times (you can see my pictures of the NYC subway here). My favorite line I rode while there was the A train, mostly because it has several long gaps between express stops, and sailing across Manhattan and Brooklyn on an express is really fun. I actually one time did the Subway Challenge, where I rode to and stopped at all 472 stations (it took me 29 hours). I really enjoyed riding BART in San Francisco (pictures), the Los Angeles Metro (pictures), the Cleveland RTA (pictures), and the Charlotte Lynx Blue Line (pictures).
jvvg (talk | contribs) 21:57, 24 June 2018 (UTC)
Nice! How is it possible to do the Subway Challenge? I would die if I had to do that! I don't like the A Train because of the amount of Homeless People that seem to get attracted to that line. I wish to ride on the BART and the LA Metro one day. Your photos are great too! Are you also a professional photographer?
NYCDOT Logo.jpg NYCDOT [ Talk Page | Contributions | Directory ] 22:08, 24 June 2018 (UTC)
The way to do the subway challenge is to find a route that visits all 472 stations in the least amount of time possible (it must stop at each station at least once, not just pass through), and then actually get on the train and follow that route. I'm not a professional photographer, unfortunately. I'm just a college student who likes taking pictures and sometimes has too much free time.

Using templates for WM

Hi! I saw that every time WikiMonitor comments on a talk page, it re-creates the three messages over and over again. You could put the three messages as templates instead to save space and time. Can you change WM to just use user subpage templates?
CrazyBoy826-Icon.png CrazyBoy826 Talk | Contribs | Scratch account
18:40, 8 August 2018 (UTC)

The space savings would be minimal (a few hundred bytes per message), and I don't see how it would save time. However, this would also lead to having extra dependencies, where old messages would depend on current templates, and this would also mean that if I ever decide to change the message, then it will change for everyone who has ever received it.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 00:52, 9 August 2018 (UTC)
I mean new messages will use the template, old ones stay the same. By saving time I mean that more text uploaded will take a longer time to get through. If users want, they can change their bot messages to the template.
CrazyBoy826-Icon.png CrazyBoy826 Talk | Contribs | Scratch account
01:57, 9 August 2018 (UTC)
Using templates would also mean that the messages would be cache-dependant, and directly posting them avoids that; besides, templates increase the link indexing that needs to be done, so in reality the space savings are near zero.

Questions about some edits

So I uploaded a new version of the header at File:ScratchHeader.PNG but it got all squished and I don't know how to fix it...

Also, do we need the citation needed tag at Navigation_Bar#Scratch_Wiki about the headers?

Jandrewg (talk | contribs) 21:29, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

The header image looks fine to me. Since it now is the header, I removed that tag since the Scratch website header can be considered common knowledge.

Please categorize new pages

Hello, I'm WikiMonitor, a bot that patrols the Recent Changes. This is just a friendly reminder that when making the page Uncategorized Page, you did not include any categories. Please remember to categorize all new pages and files. Check out Help:Categories for details. Thanks!
This message was sent by an automated bot run by jvvg. You can contact him on his talk page with any concerns.

Github follows?

I noticed that you are following me and jakel181 on github but not ken, or any other awesome coders. Just me and jakel181. Why???
12944qwerty Logo.png 12944qwerty  Talk  Contribs  Scratch  17:49, 17 January 2019 (UTC)

There's no specific reason, I just haven't. However, as is true with Scratch, GitHub is not a popularity contest, and we shouldn't be focusing on follows.

Can you help me test (removed)? I included a chat widget into it. I want to test it.
To get the chat, keep refreshing until a circle in the bottom right appears. Click it, and do a test message. Then let me know here.
Then, we can have a little test chat.

How do I use welcome templates?

Hey, I noticed you place a welcome template on all new users' talk pages. I made one and I know how to paste it (it's Template:Welcome By EIephant Lover, but with two brackets on either end). I just don't know how you have managed to do one every time. Do you have some sort of bot do it for you or do you just notice when a new user comes and paste it there? For the former, is it possible that I could do this and if so how? For the latter, how can you see when a new user comes? Thanks so much :)
EIephant_Lover (talk | contribs) 20:22, 25 January 2019 (UTC)

Although I am not jvvg, you have to do it manually. :( But, you can use some tricks. I use a preload. See this link. Or, you can use Ken's welcome.js

Welcome Message

hi there, a while ago bigpuppy was trying to teach me how to set a welcome message to automatically go onto a new users talk page, he said something that i cannot remember, i tried what he said and it didnt work, would you mind telling me so i can get it to work?? many thanks,
Jjbullet.png JJBullet  Talk  Contribs  Directory

You can store your welcome message as a template in your userspace (for example, User:JJBullet/Welcome) and then whenever a new user joins, you can just comment {{User:JJBullet/Welcome}}~~~~ to leave your message. However, it is not possible for you to make your message be included automatically on new users' talk pages without use of a bot (and we will not approve any such bots). You can see when new users join by looking at the user creation log though.

Hey There, recently i have been thinking about elections, and i was just wondering if you (the Bureaucrats and admins) can perform an election soon as i feel some wikians would benefit from an election many thanks,

Elections are not held periodically, but rather when the existing admins feel that more administrative help is needed. For now, we are doing fine with the amount of help we have, so there won't be any elections for the immediate future.

In the future, if you receive an incorrect notification from WikiMonitor, please don't remove it, as I don't want to have to dig through the page history to figure out what you're talking about. Anyway, regarding that specific edit, the div tag you added shouldn't have beeen added to the page, and if you are making an edit to a talk page that is not a message, if you mark it as minor, WikiMonitor will ignore it.

WM

Can you explain why I can't edit a lot on one page?
FrenchBread49 (talk | contribs) 03:29, 2 June 2019 (UTC)

Editing the same page multiple times clogs up the recent changes, which has to show one entry per edit. Instead of editing many times, use the "show preview" button! It's right next to the "save changes" button and it shows you what your edit will look like before you save. Once you're happy with how the edit looks, then you can save changes.
Kenny2scratch logo.jpg kenny2scratch  Talk  Contribs  Directory

Banana439monkey.png banana439monkey (Talk | Contribs | Scratch | Edits (3,098)) 13:12, 13 August 2019 (UTC)
huh your rule made me work twice on an entire section. I am used to save work.
Congyingzhou (talk | contribs) 05:06, 14 August 2019 (UTC)
As banana pointed out, you should use "Show Preview" to see how things look while you edit. When you save a page, it makes an entry in the page history as well as the recent changes log (which a bunch of people look at to monitor how things are going on the Wiki), and saving frequently creates a ton of entries, making it harder to keep track of what's going on. If you want to save your work while you're working, the best thing to do is save it somewhere else (like a Word doc or something).

About WikiMonitor

Hi. I just wanted to inform about WikiMonitor. WikiMonitor doesn't work as well in Scratch Wiki:Sandbox. I have no idea about why the bot doesn't clean the page. For your information.
Ahmetlii logo.gif ahmetlii  Talk  Contributions  Directory
19:20, 25 May 2020 (UTC)

WikiMonitor is a script that is running in the background, and when it sees an edit to the sandbox it will clear it four hours later. However, for various reasons the script stops running (like today, my Pi had to be unplugged to install an air conditioner) and doesn't resume until I manually restart it. In cases where I know it stopped, that's usually pretty quick, but in other cases (such as a power outage when I'm not home or even a power loss that only lasts a second and I don't otherwise notice) I don't know it's not running and thus don't restart it for a while.

Glitch(?) with ConfirmAccounts

Hey jvvg, I'm not sure if you know about this already (I faintly recall talk about a similar glitch in the past), but today I experienced a glitch with ConfirmAccounts — specifically with this account request: https://en.scratch-wiki.info/w/index.php?title=Special:ConfirmAccounts/authors&acrid=6397&wpShowRejects=1

Again, I remember there being an issue in the past with the system getting confused if a user had two consecutive underscores in their username (if I remember correctly), but I don't remember exactly how that got resolved so I decided to notify you anyway.

Also, while I'm here, do you prefer stuff like this to be posted on your talk page or your Scratch profile?

Thanks! :)
Bigpuppy Logo.png bigpuppy talk | contribs 03:03, 28 May 2020 (UTC)

Also, don't get me wrong, it's a rarity that someone has a username like this, so it may not be worth fixing (if it's even possible to fix). :)
Bigpuppy Logo.png bigpuppy talk | contribs 03:05, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
That's not the only issue, wfGetLBFactory was deprecated in 1.27, which means by 1.28, it had the potential of being broken. Future updates to MediaWiki will result in ConfirmAccount not working at all unless the modifications are rewritten entirely.
Banana439monkey.png banana439monkey (Talk | Contribs | Scratch | Edits (3,098)) 08:40, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
I'm not sure there's much I can do about this, as this is more of a MediaWiki issue. Ultimately the extension (using the original code) uses a built-in function to convert usernames to the MediaWiki format, which I think eliminates consecutive underscores.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 23:24, 30 May 2020 (UTC)
Ah, okay. Thanks for replying. If I get directed to a user who probably didn't apply (like this ten-year-old inactive account) again, I'll just check the account confirmation project to make sure it's the right account. Thanks! :)
Bigpuppy Logo.png bigpuppy talk | contribs 23:27, 30 May 2020 (UTC)
I just got the same glitch with https://en.scratch-wiki.info/w/index.php?title=Special:ConfirmAccounts/authors&acrid=6675&wpShowRejects=1 :/
We should tell future EWs to check the verification project first if the account requester seems inactive.
TenType (talk | contribs) 04:03, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
Perhaps we should add something to Scratch Wiki:Become a contributor/Admin Guide or the Special:ConfirmAccounts interface?

Garnetluvcookie (talk | contribs)Garnetluvcookie 14:37, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

It's not malfunctioning, that's purpose of WikiMonitor. If you don't want any notification from bots, just add{{NoBots}} to top of your talk page.
Ahmetlii logo.gif ahmetlii  Talk  Contributions  Directory
14:46, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
You still need to add categories to a page, even if there is very little content. That helps us keep things organized on the Wiki. Also, please don't use {{NoBots}} just to avoid notifications for not putting categories, as it really is something everyone needs to do when creating pages. The page also usually doesn't need much content for you to know what category it belongs in, you can often tell just by the title.

About WikiMonitor

WikiMonitor asked me not to do several edits in a short amount of time, edits on User:Col_Cat228 which is my userpage, when i was just adding and moving stuff to it. Could you please make it so WikiMonitor has no effects on people's userpages? It's annoying. Thanks
Col_Cat228 (talk | contribs) 11:47, 26 June 2020 (UTC)

See: WikiMonitor (talk | contribs). One of WikiMonitor's purposes is warning users about fast edits. If you don't want to add a notification, simply add {{NoBots}} to your talk page or your main page, but it's not recommended by myself.
Ahmetlii logo.gif ahmetlii  Talk  Contributions  Directory
14:03, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
Col_Cat228, all edits you make to the wiki have to be patrolled, so it's helpful if people don't make a lot of edits in a short amount of time. WikiMonitor is there for a reason; I recommend you do not add {{NoBots}} to your talk page because you may end up missing some important notifications. Thanks, and thank you for editing the wiki! :D
Bigpuppy Logo.png bigpuppy talk | contribs 15:59, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
Also, I recommend you use the "Show preview" button. If you still make a mistake and end up making too many edits on a page, that's okay. But the WikiMonitor notification will help remind you of that.
Bigpuppy Logo.png bigpuppy talk | contribs 16:03, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
Userpages are actually one of the most common places where people make a lot of edits rapidly, so it was very much intentional that I included them. Regardless of where the edits take place, they show up in recent changes. Using "Show Preview" appropriately still applies there as much as it does everywhere else.

Congrats on the job! I see that your status space has been available for rent since June 20, 2018. How much? :P
Groko13 (talk | contribs) 22:57, 26 June 2020 (UTC)

Still one cent per nanosecond.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 23:08, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
Really? No one has rented it...ever...and you haven't lowered the rates? To be completely honest with you, I'm disappointed.
Bigpuppy Logo.png bigpuppy talk | contribs 23:16, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
Yeah, I only make $0.000000000000023148148 per nanosecond :(
Groko13 (talk | contribs) 23:18, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
jvvg just got a job, but if someone takes up his offer, he'll be able to quit his job. :P

Actually, looking at Drunken_Sailor's math above, that's an understatement. A huge understatement.
Bigpuppy Logo.png bigpuppy talk | contribs 23:31, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
If you make $1,000,000 a year, you'd still only be making $0.000000000031709792 per nanosecond (approximately 3-billionths of a cent). On the plus side, you'd make about 3 cents per second.

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Yeah, I didn't really count on getting any takers, but I can always hope.

Look here

Some old links are still working if I'm right.

That was created because the built-in account request system (Special:RequestAccount) didn't work. However, since we have since fixed it, we no longer use the system you linked to. It still exists, but no longer link to it in any official capacity. Thus, it doesn't really matter that the links may be broken, since nobody should be using it anyway.

File creation malfunction

When I was trying to upload a small file (it's about 4MB) I got the error message that said something similar to: "You forgot do put a catergory on your file". I did do that. Can you fix this?
Garnetluvcookie (talk | contribs) 15:42, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

You need to make sure to include a category in the file summary when you upload. It should be formatted like [[Category:Users' Images]] (replace "Users' Images" with the name of the relevant category). It looks like in that case, you misspelled "Category" as "Catergory".

Account naming

Hello jvvg,

I have been having some problems with my scratch account, the only fix for it may be to create a new one, which I would not like, but may happen nonetheless. I want to ask: Is it possible to change the username of a scratch wiki account so as to reflect the scratch account? I am asking this as the only fix might be to get a new account, and so I would like the usernames to match.

I haven't asked anyone else, and this is just an is this possible? question and NOT an actual request to do so yet.

I haven't updated the links at the top to this as, 1. I don't know how to, 2. I don't trust myself to try, 3. I have a sneaking suspicion it is automatic. Sorry for any waffling/overcomplicating.

Currently, I have put this as a warning on my talk/userpage:

Note Alert!: Currently my scratch account has been deleted by accident (not by me), and so PLEASE, PLEASE always contact me until this is removed via my talk page. Thanks for understanding.

Thanks.

I'm not Jvvg, but according to here, Scratch wiki usernames cannot be changed.

Ah, ok thanks Jammun.

Edit: This is now old and irrelevant, thanks. Jvvg, if you wish to, you may remove this.

Please Delete my account

Hello, Can you please delete my account. I want to register to the wiki under a new username
Acebsa (talk | contribs) 20:00, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

Unfortunately, this is not possible according to Scratch Wiki's guidelines. You cannot create a new account unless it's an approved bot account for Scratch Wiki. However, you can create a new redirect on the (User:your other account) page if you want.

No, that's not allowed either. You're unfortunately stuck with the first name you registered with - we don't support moving or renaming accounts, unlike the main site.

Even though redirecting your new username to your old username is not allowed now, feel free to propose that the rule be changed if you would like. ;)
