User Talk Pages

Yes Resolved (since 30 June 2023)

What are user talk pages for? Kpoovakan, Wiki Editor and Scratcher. Learn more about me at https://scratch.mit.edu/users/kpoovakan/ or at
Kpoovakan (talk | contribs) 00:59, 23 June 2023 (UTC)

1. User talk pages are used for sending a message to a specific user.
2. Why is your signature so long? It breaks off ito 3 lines, and the custom signature guidelines say that custom signatures should only occupy one line.

Why is there a rule that you cannot create any of the subsections of the main page as AF subpages?

Yes Resolved (since 15:30, 15 July 2023 (UTC))

I don't see why this should be a rule...
Ilikecereal1 (talk | contribs) 14:21, 15 July 2023 (UTC)

All corresponding subsections are on the joke home page itself; the rule against creating the subpages is likely to keep them in one place.

How can I have a different username on the Scratch Wiki?

Yes Resolved (since 22:08, 17 July 2023 (UTC))

I've been referring to myself as BobRocks20 since 2020 and while I know you can't change your username on the Scratch website (with some exceptions), I want to have my current wiki username changed to reflect my preferred username. I know one wiki editor whose username in the wiki is different from his Scratch username and his name is Jammum so I guess that means its possible to do that. If so, how?
Cutebross260IsBack (talk | contribs) 21:26, 17 July 2023 (UTC)

As far as I know, it's not possible unless your Scratch account username was changed (this happened to me). Afterwards, an admin will change your Wiki account name. The Wiki admins don't change usernames for request or for personal preference. Jammum's Scratch username differs from his Wiki one because he originally requested an account on his @Jammum Scratch account, however later moved to his current one @SausageMcSauce. So he never really had a username change; he just moved accounts.
Kanga logo.png KangaCoder talk β€’ contribs β€’ profile 21:57, 17 July 2023 (UTC)
Oh, okay. I've been wanting to move accounts for a while but I can't do that...it's a long story. Thanks for telling me.

Talk page inactivity

I have noticed in the past few months that very few edits have been made to talk pages across this wiki. This includes the Community Portal, where there has been a two week gap between edits, and a week's gap between this being posted and the last revision. The number of active users has not decreased massively (78 at the time of writing), so are users less interested in posting on talk pages, or might the welcome page on talk pages be often overlooked? There might not be an actual reason for talk page inactivity; these are just some theories.
Jammum Icon.png Jammum (πŸ’¬ Talk - ✍️ Contribs - 🐱 Scratch) 17:06, 25 July 2023 (UTC)

I think the reason is no one is interested in talking is because they just don't want to go through the effort of checking the talk page for replies when they ask a question for an article. For example, I had sent a message on some talk page about half a year ago, and I didn't get replies after two months so I just did the edit. Most people just prefer to edit it and let other people revert/undo it if it shouldn't be there.

The Diccustion Invitation page exist but then most people see the invites after the discussion has been finished by two people. Thing is, no one is encouraged to make talk page edits. I remember there was this user who edited 90 percent main pages, and they were congratulated for having all mainspace. There was also a user who only had 7 userspace edits [they left the wiki], the rest were all mainspace and talk pages, but no one recognized them for it.

I think people would edit talk pages more if we gave them a incentive to check talk pages.
SpiderLogo.png Vdiu | Talk | Contributions | Scratch Profile 04:22, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
Another theory involving talk page inactivity, even though it might be a bit like a self-fulfilling prophecy, might be that they become less visible/abundant in Recent Changes through a first major decrease, then resulting in an even higher decrease in posts.
Jammum Icon.png Jammum (πŸ’¬ Talk - ✍️ Contribs - 🐱 Scratch) 08:47, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
(another addition) Some proposed changes to articles through the talk page would are becoming more difficult to implement due to this phenomenon, due to needing the agreement/consensus of multiple users, which might be more than the unknown number of users who regularly watch talk pages.
Jammum Icon.png Jammum (πŸ’¬ Talk - ✍️ Contribs - 🐱 Scratch) 08:50, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
According to what I've seen, there are around 7 people who comment on talk pages.
SpiderLogo.png Vdiu | Talk | Contributions | Scratch Profile 15:17, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
I have noticed this, too. I have become much less active due to the lack of talk page activity. The lack of activity makes it hard to get stuff done that needs consensus. It also makes it hard to know what is needed there. So I went to checking the wiki a lot but not doing anything to not checking the wiki at all. I have previously signed up to discussion invitation, but I got removed due to inactivity. The main Scratch website has also seemed to get quiet, too.
-unsigned comment by Ideapad-320 (talk | contribs)
I would say talk page activity is secondary to mainspace activity, for sure. There's a reason we focus on mainspace contributions. S:BRD also defines Discussion (talk page edit) as subsequent to both Bold (mainspace edit) and Revert (mainspace edit).
I think there are a number of solutions to talk page inactivity, each with their drawbacks:
  • Technological - add Echo or some other method of notifying people when they are replied to. Drawback is that this requires technical effort and possibly an overhaul of the skin.
  • Cultural - people should use their watchlist more and ideally turn on email notifications if that's their forte. Drawback is that this requires a community cultural shift.
  • Procedural - start using discussion invitations much more eagerly, perhaps as soon as topics are posted. Drawback is that this may be annoying to some and also puts more burden on those posting on talk pages.
Bear in mind also that it's currently summertime. A lot of our activity in general happens during the school year since that's when people use Scratch (at school) and thus the Wiki. Another solution may simply be to wait.
Kenny2scratch logo.jpg kenny2scratch  Talk  Contribs  Directory
02:52, 30 July 2023 (UTC)
Quite a few of these ideas seem useful for proposed solutions to increase talk page activity; I have a few comments about a few of them:
  • For the Echo proposal, there has been an attempt by Jvvg to implement it, although it was eventually oversighted and needs re-implementing again due to 1.39 skin updates.
  • S:DIS's activity, I think, is starting to slow down, but I think it is still useful to invite participating users into discussions; I think it could be promoted more.
  • Now replying back to something in my original post, I mentioned in one of my posts that one possible reason for talk page activity decrease could be users oversighting the welcome tutorial (although I do not think anything can really prove it). I think the welcome pages as a whole seem a bit wordy (some content comes from an old Wikipedia tutorial) and some of it could be updated to mention some Wiki procedures, so would a Welcome tutorial overhaul be useful?

Jammum Icon.png Jammum (πŸ’¬ Talk - ✍️ Contribs - 🐱 Scratch) 08:29, 30 July 2023 (UTC)
Certainly couldn't hurt to overhaul the Welcome tutorial. Please propose it in a separate topic and perhaps make a S:SWP out of it.

I might think of creating a topic about a welcome re-haul eventually (I might also bring up the inactive Scratch Wiki Adventure and whether it is still feasible).
Another thing regarding S:DIS, I think a promotion of it should be added to the Community Portal help box. I recently added the list of unresolved non-CP discussions (although I think no changes in activity were made).

Add image-rendering: pixelated to the pixelated emoji

As visualized in User:Mybearworld/Demo, the emoji can get a little blurry when scrolling. Could someone who has the necessary priveleges surround all the pixelated emoji with <span style="image-rendering:pixelated">...</span>?

I don't have the time to exhaustively test each emoji, and given my vision my judgement may also be flawed. Can you go through each one and determine which should and shouldn't be pixelated? Then I can make the necessary edits.
Note also that I haven't edited the individual emoji templates like {{smile}} etc., which {{e}} uses. Those can be updated with your more detailed investigation.

New navbox suggestion

I am proposing a new 'Scratch Events' navbox for pages in Category:Scratch Events and subcategories. I am mainly proposing this because several of the Scratch Camp pages link to several of the other Camp pages, which some of them might be inconsistent, and it might be useful to link from other non-Camp events from others.

The page is currently stored in my sandbox for drafting.

Scratch wiki is extremely slow right now

Currently the wiki is extremely slow. It is taking a long time to load pages (sometimes 5 seconds or more). Recent changes is taking 20 seconds. The parser profiling data for this page shows a CPU time of .444s and a Real time usage of 5.32 seconds.

I think the problem was on your end, because the pages were loading fine yesterday for me.
SpiderLogo.png Vdiu | Talk | Contributions | Scratch Profile 05:31, 20 August 2023 (UTC)
In the future plase report this on Scratch Wiki talk:Community Portal/Logging server faults instead of the full CP. But also sometimes the Wiki is just under heavy load for whatever reason and it's usually a good idea to wait a while before trying to make further requests.
That being said, parser profiling showing 5 seconds is concerning. I'll bring it up but I doubt there's anything we can do without a repro case.

Search this talk page and it's archives not working

The Search this Talk page and it's archives button on the Community Portal doesn't work correctly. If you type something into the box and press the button, it brings you to a search page that says 'Only searching in pages whose title starts with "Scratch Wiki talk:Community Portal#"'. However, there are results outside of the Community Portal.

There probably is no longer an option for searching subpages on the search page anymore in vanilla MediaWiki, but the functionality is available in a MediaWiki extension called AdvancedSearch, according to MediaWiki's website, but is requires some extra software other than MediaWiki extensions to be installed along with it.
Jammum Icon.png Jammum (πŸ’¬ Talk - ✍️ Contribs - 🐱 Scratch) 07:58, 20 August 2023 (UTC)
Why not remove the option for it then? It's just adding to the page size and confusing some wikians (like me).

An explanation of today's downtime

Yes Resolved (since 21:36, 5 October 2023 (UTC))

Hi everyone,

Over the past 90 minutes or so, the Wiki has been intermittently down. This was caused by me finally implementing a solution to the performance problems we've had the past few weeks. Basically, I found a bunch of outdated server software (PHP version and a number of PHP extensions) and updated it to newer versions. In the process, this completely erased everything we have in the cache, especially the localization cache. Running the Wiki with absolutely nothing in the cache is an extremely computationally expensive thing to do, and basically our server couldn't handle the load. This started to resolve itself on its own as cache entries started to get populated, but was going to take a long time before we were fully back up and running as normal. To avoid prolonging the problem, I took down the English Wiki, which has by far the highest traffic, while rebuilding the localization cache for all of the Wikis; if I did not do this, the server would not have been able to run the script to rebuild it under the load. We should be good going forwards and the Wiki does seem to be performing much better now. If any issues come up, please post them here, or if the Wiki is unavailable, on our Wiki forum topic.

Thank you everyone for your understanding, and apologies for the disruption.

Scratch 0.x pages rework

There are currently 15 Scratch 0.x pages on the Wiki (plus an extra one that's a work in progress), although there are many more 0.x versions. However, making a page for every single 0.x version would be unfeasible and pointless since there are over 100 0.x versions that have been discovered. I suggest that pages should be made for versions in a specific time frame (for example, "Scratch versions from April to June of 2006") rather than pages for specific versions.
Ametz807 (talk | contribs) 22:16, 11 September 2023 (UTC)

My preference would be to only make pages on 0.x versions that introduce significant/major changes to the Scratch interface (e.g. 26May04); that way, the wiki isn't cluttered with pages about versions that are virtually identical and there's complete coverage of the hundreds of 0.x versions.

Hi everyone,

As part of the effort to avoid the 508 errors we've intermittently been getting, we have had to disable Recent Changes for now. Recent Changes is extremely resource intensive and my suspicion is that there is something that needs to be optimized with it that isn't currently optimized. We will look into this further and hopefully get it available to everyone again soon. Apologies for any inconvenience.

Hopefully final report on the 508s

Hi everyone,

I have what is hopefully the final report on the 508 errors we have been dealing with over the past month or so. There were two main causes, and I will cover each one.

The first and less important cause was Recent Changes. Recent Changes was using very high amounts of CPU and RAM and multiple loading this at once could slow down the server. The stop-gap solution was to block it, but in the meantime we have implemented some optimizations to improve its performance and it is usable again. From my personal experience it now loads much faster. The one caveat is there are now lower limits on how far you can go back in time in order to avoid excessively large queries.

The second and more important reason was a surge in traffic from Bytespider. I set up a bunch of diagnostic tools to help track down slow scripts and spikes in traffic, and after the most recent 508s started popping up, I promptly looked at the server logs for suspicious traffic. I saw a large number of requests with a "Bytespider" User-Agent, which were sprinkled throughout the log but formed an increasingly large portion of the requests leading to nearly 100% of them at the time the 508s started. After doing some research on the topic, I learned that Bytespider is a web crawler made and operated by Bytedance, the company that makes the social media app TikTok. Web crawlers are programs that automatically look around the internet and find content for various purposes, most often search indexing (for example, Google has a crawler that indexes all the sites it finds periodically to keep their search indices up to date). However, unlike a lot of other crawlers out there, Bytespider does not respect robots.txt (which establishes rules regarding what web crawlers can do) and does not have rate limiting to avoid overwhelming sites. As a result, we were absolutely bombarded with them and it overwhelmed the server. All of the information I could find about them online recommended blocking them, so that is what we did. Within minutes of doing that, the 508s stopped and have not come up again. We are also looking into other mitigation strategies to avoid similar problems from popping up in the future.

Thank you everyone for your patience and apologies for the downtime. Please let me know if there are any further issues.

As Ahmetlii notes, Google Analytics across all wikis was disabled due to GDPR concerns. The International Stats page, however, does not rely on GA data and should still be running. ErnieParke is the correct person to contact about the matter. I will see what I can do.

I can look into getting stats back up with IWB. Apologies for not being more active as I've been throwing up for over a year, something that's still clearing up, so I may be slower then normal.

@Ahmetlii + @Kenny2scratch I can't fully understand why the function of the Interwiki-Bot, which is to create interwiki entries and determine the number of pages accessed on our wikis, would need Google Analytics. Shouldn't this be possible without Google Analytics?

Well, there are indeed alternatives; according to an evaluation done in the aftermath of this, in a certain communication channel which I can't name or link per the Guidelines. However, none of the alternatives were deemed suitable for the Wiki's usecases at that time.

Featured image Update

Yes Resolved (since 18:19, 10 October 2023 (UTC))

Hello! I Recently Updated File:FollowLimitMessage.jpeg For Scratch's New Purple Theme, But Because Jpeg Images Have Caused Problems In The Past, I Uploaded It As File:FollowerLimit.png Instead. However, It Appears That the Jpeg Version Is Currently The Featured Image On Scratch Wiki Home. Could It Be Updated To FollowerLimit.png?

We don't delete wiki accounts unless in compliance with GDPR. As a result, you're best off signing out of your account and not using it (forgetting the password in your browser can be used too, if it helps).

November Featured Images

Yes Resolved (since 02:06, 18 November 2023 (UTC))

Hello everyone! It's time to decide on featured images for November. If you have any suggestions, please leave them below. Please also include an explanation for why you think the image(s) that you suggest should be featured.

What can I suggest?

You can suggest any image(s) on the English Scratch Wiki that have not been featured previously.

How do I tell if an image has already been featured?

It will have the {{featured}} template on it, shown as a star icon in the top right corner of the image page.

Is there a limit to the number of images I can suggest?

No. However, please don't suggest too many... :P

How do I change the title of a page?

Yes Resolved (since 00:35, 22 October 2023 (UTC))

Is there a way to change the title of a Scratch Wiki page without creating a new page and moving the content there?
Stegie1234 (talk | contribs) 02:27, 19 October 2023 (UTC)

If you click the pencil icon on the top right, there should be an option called "Rename".

No article on full-screen 3.0

There is an article on the same in 1.x and 2.0 versions but not 3.0. The 1.0 version gives a redirect to the 2.0 article for information on 3.0 but there is no information about that in there. Can anyone help me with it or we have to make a new article?
Dahipuri (talk | contribs) 13:33, 20 October 2023 (UTC)

I'm not sure that it's really necessary to make a page on Scratch 3.0's fullscreen. The reason the presentation mode article exists is because of the minor differences that can be found between them (and even then the article's quite short). As far as I'm aware, there's no difference between the editor's Stage and fullscreen mode, aside from a couple of minor graphical differences.

Tips on how to create a good userpage?

So I made a temporary userpage but I don't like. Any help on it/tips?
Kleemiya_the_furball (talk | contribs) 14:19, 24 October 2023 (UTC)

Well, the definiton of 'goodpage' is different from Scratcher to Scratcher, so the first thing to do is define 'good userpage' You might wish to start looking at other's userpage (not mines! I feel ok with that temporary page). Then, you can try to get the thing you like to your page. Remember to have fun while doing so! You may also want to some templates or font!
Purin2022 (talk | contribs) 10:21, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
"Good" is highly subjective, but if you want good tips, start by describing yourself, use headers to seperate the page into sections, add images that you like (projects or art you made) and make use of other formatting techniques to add flair to the page. Check out other users to get inspiration (but not mine)

How do people got image with profile name 'Scratcher'?

Yes Resolved (since 09:21, 26 October 2023 (UTC))

How do people get images with the profile name 'Scratcher', like on the right?

Alert.PNG

I mean, I know that you can use F12 to open the inspection page and change the name, but it does not make sense that people use this on Scratch Wiki...
Purin2022 (talk | contribs) 14:39, 25 October 2023 (UTC)

I think you answered your own question. People are using the inspector to change it. The reason would be to make the image more generic and avoid drawing attention to a specific user. There isn't a rule specifically requiring it, but some users do it.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 21:19, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
You can also use Inspect Element [in the right click menu] to edit the page [this method is easier that F12]. People normally make it generic so that the username in the image does not draw attention. However, we do have a few images with a non-generic usernames [the reason is sometimes that the page screenshotted does not exist or is not accesible anymore].

Should we add this?

 Unresolved (see all...)

Basically, we have a category for pages that have requested a merge, but we should probably have a category for pages that need to be merged. This would make it much easier to find the pages that need to be merged. It would tell if a page needed to be merged by if it's merge template had the third thing filled in (see merge template's page).
MagicCoder330 (talk | contribs) 20:00, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

The category for 'pages that have requested a merge' and for 'pages that need to be merged' are under the same template of {{merge}}, and trying to create 2 catogries for a single template is not a good idea.
Purin2022 (talk | contribs) 20:31, 17 November 2023 (UTC)
Ah, sorry, I'm new to the wiki and don't know too much about the merge system. I just thought it might be easier lol.

How Do I Create A Header for My Userspace?

Apologies if this is an obvious question. But I've seen many users with headers on their userpage with various links. How do I create one?
Bobcat0701 (talk | contribs) Insert generic signature here. 00:54, 17 November 2023 (UTC)

You can use templates. Create a page named User:Bobcat0701/header and add the header template's content there. And then you just need to {{/header}} to every single page of your userspace. (There isn't a better way to do so)
Purin2022 (talk | contribs) 20:35, 17 November 2023 (UTC)

Fair Use page

We've recently deleted many Fair Use images. However, this is causing many dead links across the wiki (mainly the April Fools pages). Should we create a page explaining what happened to those image?
Purin2022 (talk | contribs) 19:02, 18 November 2023 (UTC)

I don't think a page is needed just to explain this mass-deletion; I think it just need to be mentioned here.
To sum up, I have been mass-deleting fair use images from April Fools' Day pages; because those images are not being used educationally on the April Fools' Day pages, I have decided to delete many of them and explicitly mention in AF rules that they cannot go in AF pages.
I have mentioned this with other EW+ users off-wiki that I intend to mass-delete those images; there had been an unwritten, but rarely enforced, rule before then that about fair use images and AF pages.
I have removed a few image dead links to those files and uploaded new versions of some files that are free but with similar content; I intend to remove or replace many of the dead links eventually.

"Sorry! We could not process your edit due to a loss of session data." Errors

Lately I recieved this error when I submit an edit, multiple times:

Sorry! We could not process your edit due to a loss of session data. You might have been logged out. Please verify that you're still logged in and try again. If it still does not work, try logging out and logging back in, and check that your browser allows cookies from this site.

I've allowed all cookies for this site, and I can verify that I'm logged in. Resubmiting the edit seems to fix this. Is it just me or are everyone experiencing this problem? (Yes, I also recieved that error while trying to post this topic)
Purin2022 (talk | contribs) 18:31, 19 November 2023 (UTC)

I have received this error only once. I know that MediaWiki here has had a minor update recently, so that could be one possible origin of this issue.

I usually get it if I am in the page editor for a long time and try to save the edit so that might be the reason why it has been happening to you.

It couldn't a server error be because @Jammum only encounter it once even though he edits multiple times, but I received the error 10 times out of the last 10 edits.

It also happens if you don't submit edits for a long time, as mentioned by @Scratchgodo. If it is neither of the cases above, it probably means that you are submitting another kind of data at the same time. Normally when this happens, I just press save page again and it goes through.

Dark mode page preview bug

The bug

So I found this out but when viewing a page preview in dark mode, the background of the preview stays white, while the text changes from black to white, making the text really low contrast. I think this could be solved by either forcing the text to be black, or making the background of the page preview dark.
Small ninjahanzo pfp.png ninjahanzo ( Talk | Contribs | Scratch ) 02:28, 21 November 2023 (UTC)

This isn't the only UI element like this, most of them still have the light gray text while changing the background to white (the edit header when visual editing, the error message when an image couldn't be uploaded, the pop-up menu for editing equations, etc.)
