English Scratch Club
Not done
The Scratch club is a weekly meeting among a group of Scratchers which are contributing actively to the Scratch Wiki and to Scratch in general. The meetings are used to discuss important issues, most notable was the discussion if the transition of the english Wiki should take place. Currently, the weekly meetings are held in German, but we used to have an international Scratch club following after the German one. An alternative could be to make it alternating every week between German and English. As a start, who of the English and international Wiki administrators would be interested in it and able to join? And what would be better: weekly every Monday at 9:00 PM CET or bi-weekly at 8:00 PM? Once I get a tendency about the if and when, I will bring it up at the next German Scratch club, perhaps already next Monday. Frodewin (talk | contribs) 20:54, 12 April 2018 (UTC)

- I would definitely like to join, but neither 8 or 9 PM CET work for me - I'm in Hong Kong, and 8PM CET is 3AM HKT... Best would be on weekends, since everyone's time is likely to be more flexible - on weekdays, we have work and school, but on weekends times that would normally be during work/school are usually ok. Would 2PM CET on Saturdays (or Sundays) be workable?

I know someone already brought it up...
Anyways, Not Done is not getting any attention. I know that Kenny2scratch already added “Things To Do” on the left sidebar, and the TOC of Not Done, yet no one seems to notice it. I think that we should release an announcement to all existing editors about ND, and all incoming users about ND on their welcome page. In fact, I’m going to add that to my welcome right now.

- I think the exact date created is too easy to get wrong and too hard to get write to merit inclusion in forum pages. The forum could have been open for days before anybody noticed it.

Translating Japanese articles into English
Hello! I'm an admin in Japanese Scratch Wiki. In that wiki, we have some articles that English Wiki doesn't have. (Of course, some can't be, due to the strict S:NOSP!)
- ja:音量を使ってScratchを制御する (Control Scratch via Loudness Block)
- ja:Some Blocks (An early extension of Scratch 3.0, which is removed later.)
- ja:画像のホスト/cubeupload.com (How to Use Cubeupload.com)
- ja:商標の方針 (Trademark Policy)
Please discuss whether they are useful. Thank you! Apple502j Talk/Activities 2,114edit 22:54, 15 July 2018 (UTC)
- Cool articles! I definitely think we should add the "Some Blocks" one; since it was a Scratch 3.0 extension just like the pen extension or the music extension, it's just that it was removed.
- I think the cubeupload one might work well on the Wiki - or at least as a section in Image Hosting.
- I think we could possibly add the Trademark Policy one - after all, we have articles for the Privacy Policy, Terms of Use, and Community Guidelines.
- Could you please explain the first one a bit more? Thank you.
- Anyway, thanks for pointing these out - in my opinion most, if not all of them, could be good articles on the English Scratch Wiki as well as the Japanese one!

Uploading ScratchBlocks files
I can't upload .sb2 or .sb3 files, even though I can upload the original .sb files. There's also the issue where I can't ignore the 'empty file' warning when uploading an 'sb2' file. 1a3c5e7g9i(Talk|Contributions) 22:15, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
- An .sb .sb2 or .sb3 is a scratch project file. If you want to use scratch block like this:
When GF clicked
then you use it as if you were using in the scratch fourms. You can also us this to help you make them as well: https://scratchblocks.github.io/Jakel181 (talk | contribs) 16:49, 3 August 2018 (UTC)

1a3c5e7g9i(Talk|Contributions) 02:19, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
- It's much better, usually, to painstakingly copy it block by block, however. Downloading someone else's files and modifying them doesn't teach you as much as re-making the script yourself and attempting to understand it as you do so. A 3.0 scratchblocks is coming, and once it's out we'll use it.

Suggestion: Scratch Wiki:Featured Image Suggestions
It's as it says on the tin.
As part of this new revival of featured images (and leading on from #An Interval for Featured Images, I propose that we create a page similar in concept to S:WWS, where users leave new section saying which image they think deserve to be featured. This will clean up the CP (just slightly). At around the same time as Wiki Wednesday, the EWs/Bureaucrats review the suggestions and pick three images which will then to onto S:FI. If necessary, we could also edit the current Wiki Wednesday suggestion forum post to incorporate Featured Images too.

- I think the featured images are too minor to have a dedicated projectspace page. I propose instead to have a miscellaneous "homepage tasks" page (or something like that) where you can suggest news items, featured images, and edits to other things that appear on the homepage. Does that sound better?

@Ken won't a homepage tasks page just get cluttered up? If they had to filter through edits and news items to find featured images, wouldn't it be harder for the admins? Also, having a dedicated project space is better because it's a) more obvious to Wiki Editors what the page is for, and seems less boring and gruelling than "homepage tasks", which sounds like just a big long list of stuff to do. And b) it would be easier for editors to suggest, because having a clearer Featured Image Suggestions would be more obvious to others what has already been suggested and what hasn't, et cetera. And c) having a dedicated page would make it so much easier to implement into the current WW forum post. Drunken Sailor [ Talk | Contribs | More... ] 08:49, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
- We could have Scratch Wiki:Homepage Tasks and have there be a section for featured images, news things, and any other sections that may be needed. Then it wouldn't be as messy (if there were sections). Then we could make a shortcut called S:FEATUREDIMAGESUGGESTIONS (although that's a pretty long "shortcut") and have it redirect to Scratch Wiki:Homepage Tasks#Featured Image Suggestions. Or we could have Scratch Wiki:Featured Image Suggestions redirect to Scratch Wiki:Homepage Tasks#Featured Image Suggestions.

I'm not ignoring issues with Vector because it's not my skin; they're not as important because anonymous users don't use Vector and can't set it to that. Styling problems mostly only require operating system and browser versions; occasionally resolution is also important. kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 03:09, 20 August 2018 (UTC)

Other Language Tutorials
Not done
Ken and I have agreed that there is a lot of potential in creating tutorials in other programming languages which compare the syntax of that language to Scratch. We are roughly aiming for ten tutorials per language at the start of this tutorial. The pages could possibly receive a bar at the end of the front page (i.e. a try this out bar). We were thinking of having Python (3), C++, C#, C, Ruby, Java, PHP, JavaScript and we are looking for more suggestions. The suggested page hierarchy is (Programming Language)/(Tutorial Name) Makethebrainhappy (talk | contribs) 15:16, 24 August 2018 (UTC)

- Please do not edit other people's messages. People's messages are considered part of their userspace, which is to remain inviolate.
- As to your question, there are likely not going to be any new bureaucrats, as EWs do their current jobs well and bureaucrats mainly exist to transfer privileges, block users, and anything else unique to the usergroup that you can find in Special:ListGroupRights.
- Essentially, there are not going to be any new bureaucrats for a loooong while.
- Please post any new questions as a separate topic.

Changing minor edit box to major edit
All those times when you forget to click the minor edit box... Most of the edits on the wiki are major edits. So why not have the minor edit box already ticked and if it is a major edit untick it, or change the minor edit box to a major edit box. If you look at RC most nearly all edits are minor so that is why i am suggesting this change asqwde talk | contribs 12:59, 8 September 2018 (UTC)
- Ahem! There is a user preference in Special:Preferences that will do exactly that - check the minor edit box by default. I don't think everyone should be making minor edits by default (especially newer users - on Wikipedia anonymous users can't even make minor edits at all!). If you think your own edits will be minor by default, set your preferences that way (check the "Mark minor edits by default" box).

Protection
Like Wikipedia, the Scratch Wiki should have locking.
Full protection prevents editing by everyone except admins and EWs. Fully protected media files cannot be overwritten by new uploads.
Semi-protection prevents editing by New Wikans
Creation protection prevents a page (normally a previously deleted one) from being recreated.
Move protection protects the page solely from moving (renaming).
Upload protection prevents new versions of a file from being uploaded except by admins and EWs, but it does not prevent editing the file's description page.
Pending-changes protection means edits by unregistered and new contributors are not visible to readers until the edits are approved by an admin or EW.
Extended confirmed protection, also known as 30/500 protection prevents editing by users without three months and 500 edits on the English Wiki.
What do you think?
Whatsfordinner77 (talk | contribs) 04:23, 15 September 2018 (UTC)
- Correct me if I'm wrong, but we can already protect pages. I'm pretty sure that since our wiki is hosted by MediaWiki (?) we either can already do it or can but we're not using that features. I'd ask an admin or EW for more help on this one.
Redglitter (Talk ~ Contributions ~ 506 edits) 07:12, 15 September 2018 (UTC)
- This wiki indeed uses MediaWiki (we're not hosted by Wikimedia, but we use their software), so we already have full, semi, creation, move, and upload protection (though with different implications), and we don't intend to add pending-changes protection or extended confirmed protection.

Split the Paint Article
I was browsing the wiki and noticed that the Paint editor article (here) is really long and could possibly be split up into three different articles: History of the paint editor, 2.0 Bitmap Paint editor, and 2.0 Vector Paint Editor. Jakel181 (talk | contribs) 20:55, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
- It is kinda long, but so is the CP, and do we split this? I realize it's not exactly the same thing, but it's not long enough to truly need splitting.
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 07:03, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
- in Japanese wiki, we did split it. At that time, "Types of Graphics", "Bitmap Editor", "Vector Editor", "Bitmap and Vector Comparison", "Paint Editor Conversion", "Interaction With Other Programs", "Example Uses", and "Alternatives" section is kept. Others are moved to version subpages, such as Paint Editor (2.0). Guess what will happen next January here, without the change.
- By the way, block workaround page is enough big to split, too, I think. It will be good for performance issues.

A question no one thought of before
I was looking around the Wiki when suddenly I came up with a problem: what if a user coincidently shares the name of a bot (but not connected to it) and decides to come on the Wiki? This is a very unlikely situation, but if it happened, the whole wiki would be scrambling for ways to fix the problem. What should we do to fix this problem, if the need ever arises? Userpages
Recently, I've seen a few newer wikians without userpages. I know that generally when a new account is created, a userpage is created with it. I don't know how to phrase this very well, but should I make a list of the users who don't have userpages, make them myself, or just leave it so they can create their own? Examples:

- Userpages being created automatically was a bug, not a feature. (Well, the extension treats it as a feature but since we don't use the "biography" section it's a bug.) After the transfer, with jvvg's new version of CA, we could finally turn off automatic userpage creation. Also for some people their userpages were created by Krett12 and his "NoRed" movement, but that was stopped quickly.
- TL, DR: when a new account is created, it's not supposed to have a userpage. It's up to the user to visit their own userpage and find that it's not created.

Hello! I would like to suggest to add the category Category:Uncategorized. Why you may ask? Well even though Wiki Monitor reminds you to categorize pages sometimes you forget to add it. A bot (The one I am suggesting here)(Or WM) could add the Category:Uncategorized category and wiki editors can easily find what pages need to be categorized. Thoughts? - New users on Wikipedia can sometimes have literally no experience with the site, so they need a more experienced user to help them along; we have a much more strenuous account request process that ensures that new users already know some things about this wiki; therefore, mentoring is essentially unnecessary on this site, and if it is necessary usually one of the admins ends up watching specific users for a while.

- Hey Sparf!
- Three things:
- Make sure to sign your post after the whole thing with "~~~~", not just after the header.
- When linking to a page inside the Scratch Wiki or Wikipedia, you can use internal links instead of using the normal URL format. Use this syntax:
[[Wiki Page Name#Section (Optional)|Link Name]]
When linking to Wikipedia, add "Wikipedia:" before the page name. - Why not post this on the page's talk page so future people editing that page can see it?
- Thanks.
bigpuppy talk | contribs 00:45, 29 September 2018 (UTC)
- Because the section name was really obtrusive, I've moved your signature to the correct place for you, sparf.
- Bigpuppy is completely right - especially about internal links, as we have a style guideline against external links to internal pages. And yes, questions about specific pages go on the pages' talk page.

Having a list of explicit images isn't enough. To actually use WM Commons, we need to be able to censor any explicit images from being included at all, which is not possible with any of our current tech. I will not listen to any more arguments for using WM Commons files, unless you can point out a simple way to censor explicit images. Rejected

- If there is any way it could change color every second?

Why there was an IP ban
No, it wasn't a MediaWiki ban. Because the page title had a website domain in it, and I attempted to view it, I apparently triggered some sort of anti-commercial spam mechanism that caused me to be IP banned. The ban just got lifted (which is why I can talk to you now), but I've censored the page title for its misdeeds.
To be safe, in the future do not put other websites in page titles. kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 14:27, 8 October 2018 (UTC)

We can now use images from other wikis, on other wikis!
You can now include images from any wiki, on any wiki! This means if a file exists on one wiki it can be included on any other. There's no special syntax to include cross-wiki images, it's just a normal file link. As an example, scroll to the bottom of my sandbox; The QR code there is actually a file on the Japanese wiki: ja:ファイル:ウェブサイトのQRコード.png! Note that the "File:" part has to be in the correct language for your wiki.

Add Siggy Warner to MediaWiki:Common.js
So for those who don't know what Siggy Warner is, it's basically a JavaScript thing that pops up a confirmation box when you forget to sign, as well as adding a notice to previews when you don't sign. You can still deliberately omit the signature by either checking the "minor edit" box or typing "CONFIRM" when prompted.
Since forgetting to sign your post is one of the most common mistakes, I propose that instead of people opting into using my siggy warner, we add it to MediaWiki:Common.js as something that is loaded for all users. I think my siggy warner has reached a development status where it's ready to be included for everyone.
Potentially there could be a way to opt out of it, too - maybe by loading a user JS file that counteracts the effects of Siggy Warner.
What do you think about adding Siggy Warner to common.js? kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 13:42, 10 October 2018 (UTC)

- Plenty of things that the Wiki itself relies on started off as user-generated things. This would be no exception. As apple rightfully points out, SWS2 and the Report extension are technically user-generated, as are WikiMonitor, TemplatesFTW, and other major parts. The only difference is that the "major" parts have been approved by the community to be a part of the Wiki itself and no longer counted as user-generated. Purple_Ember (talk | contribs) 21:47, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
- I don't see much controversy, and the only reason why it's currently being talked about is because of the current question of the week.

H: shortcuts for Help pages
I am suggesting that shortcuts for Help: pages to have shortcuts under the H: prefix.
An example would be H:BLOCK, which is meant to redirect to Help:Blocking users. Jammum (talk | contribs) 17:00, 26 October 2018 (UTC)
- I think short cut should say as "S:" as S stands for shortcut, If we use H: for a shout cut on help pages then we can use T for talk U for user, a letter for all the namespaces, and at that point there would be 15+ Different trypes of shortcuts to use and it would be confusing and hard to keep track.
Jakel181 (talk | contribs) 17:41, 26 October 2018 (UTC)
- You get this idea from Wikipedia, I presume? We don't have enough need for shortcuts to help pages to separate help shortcuts from project shortcuts, I believe. If we had many more help pages, with much more interest in them, then maybe we might consider adding help shortcuts.
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 03:06, 28 October 2018 (UTC)
- Firstly, I didn't get the idea from Wikipedia. Secondly, I think T: shortcuts and U shortcuts might be a bit spammy and unnecessary. Thirdly, I think S: does not stand for shortcut, I think it stands for the "Scratch Wiki:" namespace, as there is B: shortcuts for bots.
Jammum (talk | contribs) 16:55, 28 October 2018 (UTC)
- It is indeed true that S: stands for "Scratch Wiki", but B: doesn't stand for any namespace, does it? Also, I think you missed jakel181's point: if we were to have another shortcut prefix for a specific namespace, that would open up the possibility of more prefixes for even more namespaces, causing clutter. Anyway, help pages are not referred to frequently enough for a special prefix to be necessary - if you need to create a help shortcut, use a plain S: shortcut.

Reply template
Hi I created a reply template (Here) and I am wondering would it be something that you would use? If so would it be ok to move it to the template mainspace? Also if someone used it to reply to you, would you be ok with being pinged on your talk about that? Jakel181 (talk | contribs) 12:44, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
- To clarify, since the OP isn't very clear: What is the community opinion on being messaged on your talk page, notified with a banner, or otherwise made aware of being mentioned with a template on some talk page? I.e. if someone were to

Something about the vector skin
When I was viewing kenny2scratch's userpage in the vector skin, I clicked on a link, where it went back to the normal skin. To fix this, I recommend that links when viewing in the vector skin to have ?useskin=vector at the end. Jammum (talk | contribs) 16:55, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
- That is because when you click on a vector link, the page and only the page you clicked on will be vector. If your default is the sw skin. So if you click on a link that is normal (No specified skin) even if you are viewing it in vector but your delfault is the sw skin then you will see the sw skin when you click on the link.
Jakel181 (talk | contribs) 20:29, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
- I think I understand you right... you mean that links to pages when viewing in a skin other than your set skin should have
?useskin=skin
? I.e. if you're viewing in another skin, links should not take you back to your set skin? - Good idea. Now is it worth the effort?
- Changing links on the server-side is likely the most elegant solution, but also the most difficult.
- Changing links with MW JS is hackier, but easier. Thing is, it also eats up processing power, especially when there are a lot of links. It's also difficult to discern what links are internal and what links aren't.
- If you want to preview in a certain skin, though, you can use my useskin.js file (add the line
mw.loader.load('https://en.scratch-wiki.info/w/index.php?action=raw&ctype=text/javascript&title=User:Kenny2scratch/useskin.js');
to your common.js file) which adds a dropdown that lets you choose what skin to preview in.kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 03:30, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

The server transfer: what it is and why the last try failed
So I want to clear up several things... Sorry I didn't bring this up before. (For the sake of making grammar work, I will speak in future tense here.)
What it is
There is another server transfer upcoming. (For those wondering what I mean by "another", see Scratch Wiki#Server Transfer.) The purpose of this transfer is as follows:
- To move the Wikis onto their own dedicated machines
- To give the admins more freedom and power on the servers
- To release us from the constraints and worries of being on someone else's company's server
For those who don't know:
- MartinWollenweber (talk | contribs) is the person who financially supports the Wikis. Currently, the Wikis live in a folder on his company's server.
- To prevent us from doing any potential harm, he only allows we admins to access the servers via FTP, which does not let us do any advanced configuration.
- I am an exception to this. I currently have command-line access on his company servers for the sake of preparing for the transfer.
Why it failed
I attempted to perform this transfer at 10:00AM (UTC) last Friday. However, the attempt ended up failing. I was presented with MySQL error 2013 (search it up for more info) when dumping the wiki databases to transfer to the new servers. There are two possible causes of this error:
- The database is corrupted (doesn't seem to be the case)
- The database is too large, and MySQL times out when reading from it (very likely)
When the next one is
We're not really sure on this one. We're still trying to arrange a time. But do be warned that while the transfer is ongoing, the Wikis will be set to "read-only" mode. This means nobody can make any database changes.
Questions?
Hopefully that explained most of everything. Any questions? kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 11:53, 7 November 2018 (UTC)

Template
I would like to create a template for when a page needs its name to be changed.
Tarekzaki (talk | contribs) 18:09, 9 November 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for suggesting this idea. What would be the use of the template though? Why can’t you just move the page yourself? If it is move protected then that means the title is suitable, if you disagree you can bring it up on the CP. I don’t see the use for this.
No support!
asqwde talk | contribs 19:48, 9 November 2018 (UTC)

New page for mall simulators
Not done
Should we make a new page for mall simulators? Mall simulators are sort of big with the biggest mall simulator (Palace of Points) having more than 1400 members. Should we create a page for it? Sti_scratch (talk | contribs) 04:55, 21 November 2018 (UTC)
- Maybe not as a whole page, but as a section in Simulation Projects?
bigpuppy talk | contribs 16:11, 22 November 2018 (UTC)
- Mall simulators, let me explain, are studios where people can register and make projects and add them to the studio. These projects are shops, where people (that are registered in a mall simulator the shop is added in) can buy from. Mall simulators invent their own currency, not tradeable for real money, that is used within the mall simulator itself. So, I don't really think it would fit there since it's technically not a project.

Bot Shortcut for GA Stats
GA stats should have a a shortcut. Like B:IWB/GA? Apple502j Talk/Activities 2,114edit 02:54, 9 December 2018 (UTC)
- Actually, I think it should be a main shortcut like S:GA -> User:InterwikiBot/GA_Stats

Assets Page
Hi everyone! On the Community Portal on the forums, there has been a request for a page about assets on the wiki. I just want to get your opinion on whether it'd be worthwhile writing an article on it?

- Pretty good idea. :ok_hand:

- I asked them, on the topic, for more clarification on the idea before we start making it. Likely it'll end up being a duplicate of Sprite Library or something, but if it turns out to actually be unique we'll probably include it.

Active Users
The Active Users List shows people that are active from the last 30 days. The only flexibility is to hide bots and admins. I feel we could add a little more flexibility of seeing the active users from most active to least activeness instead of alphabetically. Thoughts? 12944qwerty Talk Contribs Scratch 15:23, 10 December 2018 (UTC)
- Special:ActiveUsers is built into media wiki directly, I don't see any configuration settings or MediaWiki interface pages for it. (Not to say that there isn't I just haven't found any) So this most likely would have to be done with an extension which is kind of impractical for us.

- I've wished for such a feature, but unfortunately there's no such option. And customizing it is incredibly difficult and not really worth it. Sorry.

Step-by-Step publishing
In the editing section in preferences, there is a option for step-by-step publishing which adds the publish button on the top of the edit box. Whenever I use this button to make a new section, It removes the subject and includes the content into the previous section. Why? Is it possible to fix? 12944qwerty Talk Contribs Scratch 15:33, 10 December 2018 (UTC)
- I had the same problem. It is because step by step publishing is a lab and still in development, so it is not recommended to be used. It is technically possible to fix, but not worth it for the scratch wiki. You can either turn it off or use wiki markup as a work around.

- Yeah.... What is a wiki markup?

- Scratch_Wiki:Cheatsheet you want to use a level two heading.

- Oh. Forgot that Wiki markup is formatting.

- I feel like the option should be disabled completely. All in favor?

3.0 Release: 2.0 "Archiving"
Hi everyone, just wanted to say - Scratch 3 gets released very soon, so that means that we need to make sure everything about 2.0 has been "archived" on the wiki. Are there any pages that need more info to do with 2.0? (e.g images?) Because after about a month, there won't be a chance to screenshot parts of the website etc.
EDIT: We'll also need to start a page on the development of Scratch 3.0 before the chance to screenshot parts of the beta is gone.
Redglitter (Talk ~ Contributions ~ 506 edits) 16:08, 10 December 2018 (UTC)
- I agree, we should have a 2.0 archive in some shape or form. Though we can still get most 2.0 editor images relatively easily because the offline editor is still available to be downloaded.
Jakel181 (talk | contribs) 22:33, 10 December 2018 (UTC)
- Well, Scratch Wiki:3.0 Articles will come into play upon release... I think I'll supervise the transfer of those articles to mainspace while other EWs help out in other areas. (The details will be worked out later.)

- If possible, please screenshot all the pages with old navbar. (Like project pages) Credits, Educators and Parents page will also need screenshots. Localized versions are also welcomed.

- I've started Scratch Wiki:3.0 Articles/Development of Scratch 3.0. If anyone wants to help, that'd be much appreciated!

Contributions
So, I was looking at my contributions and I found that many of the contribs I did were on pages with the User: namespace or the User talk: namespace. I feel that this wouldn't show our contributions to the Wiki. Is there any ways to change this? Or is it from the mw software? 12944qwerty Talk Contribs Scratch 18:08, 12 December 2018 (UTC)
