How to edit on the Scratch Wiki

We recommend that before you create your question, you read these tips to editing on the Scratch Wiki.

  • Sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) after your post.
  • To do various text formatting, follow the following rules, rather than using any other text-editing methods:
    • Make text bold with text.
    • Make text italics with text.
    • Make text bold and italics with text.
    • Make a link to a page outside of this wiki with link text or if you don't want the Link icon.png symbol to appear (remember http:// prefix).
    • Make a link to an article on this wiki with Page name or Link text.
    • Make a link to a Wikipedia article with Wikipedia:Page name or Link text.
    • Indent a paragraph by putting a colon (:) before it.
    • For more, see the help page on formatting.
  • Put new text under old text.
  • Always remember to be polite and respectful, assume good faith, and be welcoming, while following the Scratch Community Guidelines.
  • When creating a new post, mark it as No Not done by putting not done at the top. Once the conversation has been resolved, replace it with done (producing Yes Done).

+1 To KrIsMa, Wiki Images might mean images from wikipedia:

Dating templates?

Don't get mad at me because I am suggesting that we do something the same as Wikipedia. Anyways, Wikipedia puts date arguments in their templates to show how recently this was found or if it was from long ago. It's pretty much a page tracking tool. I can't really find any other reason because I'm not 100% sure why they actually do it... But could we make it a thing?
Mathfreak231 (talk | contribs) 00:56, 21 July 2014 (UTC)

But why? What use would it serve us?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 09:02, 21 July 2014 (UTC)
it shows how long a page has it's template on the page for. I don't think it will benefit many because if for example an inaccurate template was placed on a page it should be fixed ASAP and adding a date won't really make people want to edit the page more. Mathfreak231, an example of a template this date param suggestion will go great with?
20px KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 18:23, 21 July 2014 (UTC)
Perhaps In Progress (as we kind of have a time limit). I can't really think of others; it just seems like a general thing.
Mathfreak231 (talk | contribs) 23:24, 21 July 2014 (UTC)

Front page problem

Zoom in very closely on the "Scratch News" header and look at the corners of the division as opposed to the other sections on the page. They are not rounded but the division inside the division has 90° corners.
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 03:17, 22 July 2014 (UTC)

arent (all rounded corners) always like that? (if i know what you are thinging about) :)
20px KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 04:33, 22 July 2014 (UTC)
oh i see what you mean - ill check the code later - maybe because of a background image

Scratch Modifications

I think that we should have a place where it lists if it is open source, if it is still being worked on. I could be in charge of asking the developers but I know some of them still are. Opinions?
-PRO- Logo2.png-PRO- (talk | contribs) 18:20, 25 July 2014 (UTC)

Explain further. Most mod articles were deleted anyways especially those that aren't being worked on. We wouldn't want to bring those back.
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 21:28, 25 July 2014 (UTC)
I was talking about the ones that were already created. So I would put on Explore that it is still being developed.
-PRO- Logo2.png-PRO- (talk | contribs) 21:34, 25 July 2014 (UTC)

We reached 70 archives!

Yay! This is the 70th one :)

It's a new ten.

NEWS!

As of 4 minutes ago, Scratch Jr is available. Let's add to the news!
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 15:39, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

Usually, we only put in the new SDSs and curators.
SuperSmashScratch (talk | contribs) 15:41, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
Oops, I was wrong there.
SuperSmashScratch (talk | contribs) 15:42, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

Oh, sorry. Since Krett12 did it I thought I could. I thought she'd gotten permission.

Scratch Jr Wiki

Anyone else like this idea? I am building a web server in a week.
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 23:27, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

hmm, scratch is scratch though
20px KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 23:34, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
I think we should just use this wiki.
Swampert11 (talk | contribs) 23:36, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
Naw, we're makin' it a wiki! We can be the entrepreneurs (I didn't use spellcheck!) of this idea!
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 00:21, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
I could snap scratch-jr-wiki.org. Anyone got better ideas?
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 00:36, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
I don't support. Although a Wiki would be a great source of knowledge, would a 4-6 year old really be interested in looking through a Scratch Jr Wiki? Besides, how would we tell 4-6 years olds about the Scratch Jr Wiki in the first place?
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 02:24, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
Maybe it could be for parents. If we do make it, just let me know how to log in, I will set it all up.
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 02:30, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
I think it would be a good idea, considering in maybe half a year there will be an online community. There would be a lot to cover surely.
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 04:23, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
Alright let's ask them for a sub domain.
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 04:48, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
I don't support. We would have to make that wiki in different languages as well.
JayceeMinecraftlogo.png JayceeMinecraft user | talk | contributions 09:05, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
I think we should make it for parents. Then if their child is having trouble with it, they can go to the wiki and find some info and help them. If kids can't figure it out, then they won't participate.
-PRO- Logo2.png-PRO- (talk | contribs) 11:33, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
Who says we need different languages? The Scratch Wiki only started out in English.
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 12:51, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────Yeah, this wiki went for four years with just the English one. And we still only have the German one.
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 13:38, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

Yeah, let's start it now off site, then in half a year when there's a community we can ask them to move it. Sound good? I'll start getting it set up.
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 13:45, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
[http://scratchjrwiki.x10.bz/wiki/index.php/Main_Page Here's a temporary one. If you want an account, let me know, I'll set you up with one. But make sure you've set up your wiki e-mail on this wiki so I can send you your temp password. After we've gotten it built up, we can send the database to the Scratch Jr Team, and they can place it on their site. I tried to set the logo to the Scratch JR logo, but due to squaring, all it shows is a giant T :P.
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 15:53, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
I'd like an account. It would be great if someone got MIT and Tufts to approve a wiki and have it moved to wiki.scratchjr.org.
Djdolphin (talk | contribs) 02:07, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
What's the .x10? And why .bz?
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 13:01, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
Free hosting sucks.
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 23:34, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

NoRed User Pages

Um... I thought the consensus was to not create all the nil user pages "just to avoid redlinks"?
Userlogoaonymousguy.png AonymousGuy (talk | contribs | Scratch account) 01:31, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

I thought that too but I guess there is no point of return anymore.
20px KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 01:51, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
Yeah, even if the pages are deleted it will still show the deletion log :/
Userlogoaonymousguy.png AonymousGuy (talk | contribs | Scratch account) 01:54, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

Even if there was one, it was to do it this way. We should keep making them.
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 01:56, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

From what I read, a large majority of people disagreed that they should be created.
Userlogoaonymousguy.png AonymousGuy (talk | contribs | Scratch account) 02:00, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
People, please, before you create pages, discuss it on Community Portal :/
SuperSmashScratch (talk | contribs) 11:55, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
Looking back at the discussion, it seems like Krett was the only one that actually agreed.
Mathfreak231 (talk | contribs) 12:10, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
It looks like -PRO- also agrees now that they're creating the talk pages. Is there something we could do to prevent this in the future?
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 12:51, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
I could run a bot on my main to delete the pages.
Mathfreak231 (talk | contribs) 12:52, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

No., you really couldn't, since people besides don't want them deleted. You could create a a script to make them though.
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 13:35, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

Maybe we could also protect the pages? Does that sound possible?
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 13:28, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
Protection might be nice, but TIAC is only a normal not.
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 13:47, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
deleting it would ruin the historical status of the page more. How would we protect the pages but allow the users to create them if wanted later on? It will cause some inconveniences.
20px KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 17:58, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── I know, that's why I told him he couldn't. Besides, I bet you to find a user that has no userpage that has signed in in the past year.
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 18:01, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

What do you mean "prevent doing this in the future", ErnieParke? That statement is a bit nebulous but I am assuming you mean prevent people from doing something that will change the wiki substantially? I think the main problem in that was the discussion ending with unclear verdicts. This is what caused no concrete embodied concensus to be formed. Ps Krett what do you mean signed?
20px KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 18:05, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
I only did it to User:Adlogi because they actually log on and I hate looking at red links. Then Krett decided to do a whole lot so I thought I could too.
-PRO- Logo2.png-PRO- (talk | contribs) 19:20, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

Why why why. Why can't people respect consensus, especially for something like this? It's going to be hard to fix. Perhaps the best thing is to replace the contents of nored to essentially imitate the current system, and show nothing for user pages, and a welcome message for talk pages.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 19:24, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

Genius Sci!I'll do that!
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 19:55, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
I thought Krett asked someone.
-PRO- Logo2.png-PRO- (talk | contribs) 19:34, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
@KrIsMa: When I said "prevent doing this in the future", I was referring to preventing the creation of non-created user talk pages because it would destroy the historical aspect of the non-created pages. Besides, as @Scimonster said, we've already reached a consensus in the CP earlier.
@-PRO-: I don't remember seeing @Krett12 ask.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 19:50, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
Well she might not have. She told me she could. Look on her talk page.
-PRO- Logo2.png-PRO- (talk | contribs)

I am a boy. Even the Wiki database knows that.
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 23:18, 31 July 2014 (UTC)19:56, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

ernie can you point me to the place where the idea "dont create red link user pages" was stated not to go on?
20px KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 21:58, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
I completely agree with Scimonster - the pages that have the nored template on them should probably be blanked. For the talk pages, I think we should either blank them or provide the normal welcoming message with the date and time the account was created for the timestamp and the message appearing to be posted by the person who created the account. We can find the date and time of an account creation and the person who created the account through the user creation log. I think we should blank the user pages that already have the nored template, and I think the talk page should be blanked, or have the second idea. For the talk pages, I think blanking them is a better idea, because the default welcome message sent when the account was created was introduced in jvvg's system, so I think we should probably blank it instead to keep the talk page's historical status. Those are my thoughts. :)

25px derpmeup (talk | contribs) 05:02, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

if were blanking, then are we deleting the nored addition revision? Also, Krett, don't start blanking the pages yet. Ernie, please read above for a question I posted, I'm in iPad so I can't copy and I'm a bit indolent.
20px KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 05:28, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
Well, why would we need do delete the revision? It seems ok to keep. ;)

25px derpmeup (talk | contribs) 05:34, 1 August 2014 (UTC) ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── I think we should keep the creator of the page obscure so one might not blame him (maybe)
20px KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 05:38, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

What i mean by blanking is to have the template show nothing. Don't bother editing each page further. And for the talk pages, we can just ignore the timestamp. Don't change the content of the page; just have the template place things there.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 13:10, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
are we just going to blank the template and add a documentation about no red links or something along the lines?
20px KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 22:18, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

New Article

I was thinking that I could make an article on how to modify the JSON file of a Scratch project to get in new features, but I'm not sure because of this post. What does everyone else think?
Userlogoaonymousguy.png AonymousGuy (talk | contribs | Scratch account) 16:36, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

Sure, and I'll help you. But let's make a notice that they don't like it.
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 17:46, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
That sounds like a nice idea because we do have a Squeak Tutorial.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 19:55, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
Awesome!
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 19:56, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

New button

I think there should be a new Stop editing button after the show changes because the only way you can stop editing is to press the browser's back button which sometimes comes out as a disaster.
JayceeMinecraftlogo.png JayceeMinecraft user | talk | contributions 10:11, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

By the way, the code would be:
<script>

function noEdit() { window.history.back() } </script>

<button onclick ="noEdit()">Stop Editing</button>

JayceeMinecraftlogo.png JayceeMinecraft user | talk | contributions 10:45, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

Just go to another page like Recent Changes or click on the Read tab (probably under the pencil menu in SWS)
Mathfreak231 (talk | contribs) 12:45, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
But it would make more sense to be in the editing section because it has got to do with editing.
JayceeMinecraftlogo.png JayceeMinecraft user | talk | contributions 12:50, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
Why does it come out as a disaster?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 13:11, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
That code has the same effect as clicking the browser's back button. And isn't there already a "Cancel" link?
blob8108 (talk | contribs) 00:13, 2 August 2014 (UTC)

slight change to the welcome message.

Welcome to the Scratch Wiki! Please read the help pages before making any edits, as they provide a very useful basis for editing. even though admins can delete edit histories, should we allow people to post personal information on the wiki (email)? [2]

Until we can request accounts, I think we should then we remove it. We should trust each other.
