How to edit on the Scratch Wiki

We recommend that before you create your question, you read these tips to editing on the Scratch Wiki.

  • Sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) after your post.
  • To do various text formatting, follow the following rules, rather than using any other text-editing methods:
    • Make text bold with text.
    • Make text italics with text.
    • Make text bold and italics with text.
    • Make a link to a page outside of this wiki with link text or if you don't want the Link icon.png symbol to appear (remember http:// prefix).
    • Make a link to an article on this wiki with Page name or Link text.
    • Make a link to a Wikipedia article with Wikipedia:Page name or Link text.
    • Indent a paragraph by putting a colon (:) before it.
    • For more, see the help page on formatting.
  • Put new text under old text.
  • Always remember to be polite and respectful, assume good faith, and be welcoming, while following the Scratch Community Guidelines.
  • When creating a new post, mark it as No Not done by putting not done at the top. Once the conversation has been resolved, replace it with done (producing Yes Done).

How about we...

How about we make a page with all the electives running for Community Modertor and there speeches, so if someone doesn't know where to look for the speeches, they can look here! :)
Joletole (talk | contribs) 20:36, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

I don't think it's really necessary. All of the pages are in a single thread in the announcements forum - it doesn't get more complicated than that. We can have an item in the news on the main page for the elections, but an article or sub-article for the topic isn't needed.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 20:51, 9 April 2012 (UTC)
maybe a link the forum page on the "moderator" wiki page (since it breaks up the elections anyway)?

Media Wiki Update

The Scratch Wiki is using version 1.15.3 of MediaWiki released over 2 years ago. Newer versions fix bugs and security issues. They also add new features. Maybe it is time for an update.
Bsteward (talk | contribs)22:13, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

I do agree, although the skin might break. JSO?
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 22:48, 9 April 2012 (UTC)
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 03:55, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
Updating MediaWiki is quite complicated because we use a whole bunch of extensions (both custom one's and widely used ones) that probably break when we would upgrade. As a lazy man might say... "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" :D Although if new versions of mediawiki would provide important new functionality, an update is worth considering.
JSO (talk | contribs) 11:56, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
Well, maybe you should check out what was added in new versions, then decide whether we should update.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 12:29, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
Have you ever seen the awesome new editor in Wikipedia? It comes in the WikiEditor extension which is only compatible with MediaWiki 1.17+ (Preinstalled in Media Wiki 1.18). You can allso take a look at the new features in MediaWiki 1.16, MediaWiki 1.17, and MediaWiki 1.18.
Bsteward (talk | contribs)12:34, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
Nothing too spectacular in those changelogs, it seems. Although WikiEditor looks interesting.
JSO (talk | contribs) 13:19, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

You could make a copy of the Scratch Wiki, upgrade it, and do some testing to see what works and what breaks.
Bsteward (talk | contribs)20:24, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

Good idea.

Uploading image problem

So, I'm trying to upload a GIF for the "Barrier Grid Animation" page, but it says "The file you uploaded seems to be empty. This might be due to a typo in the file name. Please check whether you really want to upload this file." every time. The file name is correct, and the image is not deleted.

Here's the link to it, I put it on Dropbox incase anyone else wants to try. The file
Wolvesstar97 (talk | contribs) 01:52, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

I get the same error.

Easy. I just used my admin powers to zoom the URL into the box. Like, really.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 04:34, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

Clarity and Conciseness

I've been rereading some of my Game-Tree article and some of it seems to overcomplicate the issue. I'd really appreciate it if someone could try to explain it in an easier-to-understand way. I'll try and fix it up tomorrow regardless, but if someone could shorten up some of the walls of text and try for conciseness and clarity, I'd much appreciate it.
MoreGamesNow (talk | contribs) 03:51, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

I didn't see anything wrong with it. I fixed a bit of grammar, changed some wording, and categorized. It was a great article!
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 04:21, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
Usually articles by people new to the wiki aren't so good, and need a bunch of fixing. I'll actually refer to that when making an app. (I want to sell it, so it won't be on Scratch.)
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 04:22, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for categorizing and the fixes. I think your absolutely right about the articles; I suppose when I get some more experience under my belt, my articles can only improve. The only way I can go is up :)
MoreGamesNow (talk | contribs) 12:22, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
Actually, I meant that, usually, newbie articles aren't so good, but yours was great! Any other changes you wanted to make to it?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 12:35, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
I'll be reviewing it today. I'll let you know if there's anything I need. Thanks for the support! :)
MoreGamesNow (talk | contribs) 12:40, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

Partially Scratch-Related Topics

I know the wiki is meant for Scratch related topics. Can I make a tutorial about using FireMMO, for instance--FireMMO isn't directly related to Scratch. I know there is a rule against pages about Scratch projects. (plus I might want to include some history)
Bobbybee (talk | contribs) 21:06, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

Based on the thread about FireMMO here, I think having an article about it is certainly acceptable. It is Scratch related, and I think anybody interested about learning more about Mesh and other forms of Scratch multi-player would be very much interested in your article! :)
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 21:27, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
Alright. Would it be acceptable to link to the article from other mesh articles. (I'm newer to the wiki...)
Bobbybee (talk | contribs) 21:29, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
Certainly! The easiest way is to have it as a "See Also" section at the bottom of the page: like this:
See Also
*Article name (link)
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 21:52, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! I'll try that!
Bobbybee (talk | contribs) 21:58, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
Placing them in the same category is also a good way to connect pages.

SDS Change

The SDS changed to the topic All About Animals.
Joletole (talk | contribs) 19:15, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

Indeed, we recently changed the theme gallery!

Creating article

Can only wiki admins create articles?
Stevetheipad (talk | contribs) 21:46, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

no :P Just enter the title in the url bar after /wiki/ and start creating it :)
JSO (talk | contribs) 21:48, 12 April 2012 (UTC)
*votes for an easier way to discover how to create new pages* :D
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 22:56, 12 April 2012 (UTC)
I think making a page is pretty easy.
Joletole (talk | contribs) 23:07, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Scratch in Wikipedia

Check out MartinWollenweber's post here :P Sorry if you think this doesn't belong here, but thought this would be a good place to advertise it.
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 21:52, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

An interesting suggestion. Would there be a "wiki" account on Scratch (mainsite)? And, out of curiosity, does the Scratch Wiki currently support embedding projects? Is this a question of "are we allowed to" or a statement of "we should be able to"?
MoreGamesNow (talk | contribs) 01:57, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
One would also have to acknowledge that pages would take longer to load, and whether it is worth the added wait when such a project could simply be linked to. Especially since most people come to the wiki to reference, not in-depth learning (right?)
MoreGamesNow (talk | contribs) 01:59, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
I've always wanted the Scratch extension here...
MGN has a valid concern about loading time. Maybe we should just link... IDK
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 18:57, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

Image tags re-enabled

It should be an event, as it happened today (and it's pretty big...). I already updated the Scratch Timeline, but the events is locked, so I need a Wiki Administrator to do that.
Bobbybee (talk | contribs) 01:12, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for mentioning the event ^^
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 04:53, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
Your welcome.

Scratch File Format

Hi everyone! I just finished importing the little wiki I made to its new home at Scratch File Format, and tidied it up to make it all new and shiny.

Would you mind taking a look? It's intended to be a guide to anyone who wants to reverse-engineer the file format themselves (like I did in Python for Kurt) — so it may be a bit technical in places :P Hopefully it's still easy enough to follow, though :)

I quoted people off the forums (notably nXIII) in several places — can I just include what they said as part of the article, and then edit it to clarify/improve things — or should I just quote them exactly?

Many thanks! :)
Blob8108 (talk | contribs) 11:05, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

It looks a bit cleaner than the old wiki, I suppose
Bobbybee (talk | contribs) 12:27, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
Woah. It's great to see a simple article by me evolve into something so complex and informative. Great job! :)
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 18:22, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
Thank you! :)
Blob8108 (talk | contribs) 18:30, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
You should quote the users directly.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 18:53, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
Like I did, you mean? Okay. :) Thanks!
Blob8108 (talk | contribs) 19:03, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

Reference bug

I've noticed that in some articles, references show up a line below the text using it. See HTML Viewer.
Technoboy10 (talk | contribs) 14:28, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

I've seen this all over the place and forgot to report it. It does kind of worry me, JSO must have done something with the parser.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 15:06, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
Clear your cache.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 15:32, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
Indeed - clear your cache :) If it doesn't fix it, let me know.
JSO (talk | contribs) 19:28, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
The magical solution, it would seem. :P Anybody know how to clear a cache on a mobile device?
Technoboy10 (talk | contribs) 21:27, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
Never mind, it cleared on its own.
Technoboy10 (talk | contribs) 21:28, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
Ah, thanks. Works perfectly.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 21:55, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

If you want to know what the problem was: I don't remember if it had always done this, but it put a <div id="cite-ref-0" class="anch"></div> right before the sup tag. The div was displaying block, so i added css div.anch {display:inline} to fix it.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 07:12, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Scimonster, please do not use MediaWiki:Common.css for changes to the wiki skin itself, and certainly not without any prior discussion. There are several reasons for this. First of all, all of the skin-related CSS has to be in the skin files, so that the skin can be deployed to other MediaWiki installations easily. If am asked for the skin, like with the german language Scratch wiki, I want to be able to send it to them and trust that it works just like I expect it to work.
Secondly, this is a wiki with quite some readers, with all different kinds of browsers. It's a site in "production". We just can't afford to change the site wide CSS on the fly without any testing or warning. Everything has to be discussed first, and if we agree it's a necessary tweak, I can alter the skin files.
Thirdly, clearing your cache or doing a full refresh, (shift-refresh, control-refresh, ... depending on your browser) is something you should always do when you are having trouble with changes made to the site's CSS. (certainly being a programmer yourself...) even though I probably posted my obvious "solution" after you pushed your changes to the CSS.
About the changes I made - I indeed slightly changed the anchoring system to allow it to work nicely in the new 2.0 layout I am developing.
Thanks in advance.

new mods

someone should update the main page :)

It's on there. April 12th entry.

Is there anything bad about redirects?

I noticed Lucario has been removing redirects for some reason. Does he feel there's something wrong with them? What about other people? I'm completely fine with them.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 04:07, 18 April 2012 (UTC)

He has??? :O Luc needs to explain himself if that's true :D
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 04:54, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
Though personally I find them rather useless because of the changed search engine...
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 04:55, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
Where? And I do agree, there's really no point with this search.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 05:30, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
It does quicken typing though.
[1] [2] [3] i could find right now.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 06:13, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
When adding links to articles I tend to avoid using redirects, but IMO yeah there's no need to hunt down redirecting links and change them :P
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 08:10, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
Hmm... indeed I was doing it for maybe two or three edits but then I stopped, deciding that it was overall pointless. My mistake. :P
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 15:18, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
OK. :P
It is pretty pointless. :P
