How to edit on the Scratch Wiki

We recommend that before you create your question, you read these tips to editing on the Scratch Wiki.

  • Sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) after your post.
  • To do various text formatting, follow the following rules, rather than using any other text-editing methods:
    • Make text bold with text.
    • Make text italics with text.
    • Make text bold and italics with text.
    • Make a link to a page outside of this wiki with link text or if you don't want the Link icon.png symbol to appear (remember http:// prefix).
    • Make a link to an article on this wiki with Page name or Link text.
    • Make a link to a Wikipedia article with Wikipedia:Page name or Link text.
    • Indent a paragraph by putting a colon (:) before it.
    • For more, see the help page on formatting.
  • Put new text under old text.
  • Always remember to be polite and respectful, assume good faith, and be welcoming, while following the Scratch Community Guidelines.
  • When creating a new post, mark it as No Not done by putting not done at the top. Once the conversation has been resolved, replace it with done (producing Yes Done).

EW election (we are NOT hosting one right now just to be clear)

As I said in the title, let me be clear that we are not hosting an EW election now or in the near future.

Anyway, that aside, we have had several instances where there have been no EWs or admins around for periods of several days. This means that the news doesn't get updated promptly and that disputes can take a lot longer to resolve. Obviously, this isn't a good thing, and several people have suggested that we elect a new EW to help mitigate this problem. I have discussed this a bit with the other EWs and admins, and we haven't reached a conclusion yet. While electing another EW would help mitigate the problem, it does come with some costs. As some of you remember, the last election had several disputes over the procedures, and that could happen again if we have another election. Also, training new EWs takes a while, as there are a lot of subtleties to the rules that have to be picked up, especially those about processing account requests. That would take time to do, and it's possible we'll end up with someone who ends up causing a lot of problems.

Given the potential risks and benefits, what does everyone think about voting for a new EW sometime in 2016? The election would not be immediate (nominations would start February at the very earliest, and probably significantly later), and we would probably only choose one new EW. Also, if anyone has any other comments or suggestions about having an election, please say them now so that they can be taken into account.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 15:55, 27 December 2015 (UTC)

Anyone could cause problems its more of trying to figure out who would cause the least. Also since you said there isn't really an official process it would be confusing for some. The EW's and admins are also probably getting older which means more homework which means not as much wiki time. I think that some new ones MIGHT be worth while, But that's my opinion. Also if you do get into MIT (which many are hoping you will) means even LESS wiki time so I'd say Yes, most likely.
Programmer1121 (talk | contribs) 18:47, 27 December 2015 (UTC)
I definitely think an EW election is in need. I feel that almost none of the higher authorities are active anymore :( As for this disputes, I would ensure that the Scratch Team plays a role in the election to help settle arguments. I do think an election would be a good idea. As for the training problem, I would make sure to only allow people to run that have shown a history of activeness on and off the wiki, meaning the website, to prove that they will be there to receive their training as quickly as possible to reduce mistakes. What does everyone else think?

St19 Galla Logo.png St19_Galla   Talk • Contribs  21:55, 27 December 2015 (UTC)
I think what is being inferred here is that an election at this time isn't the best time because the current ews and admins are very busy. Teaching new ews take a lot of effort and time, which the ews and admins don't fully have at this time, so it wouldn't be the best idea.
stgalla, your custom signature needs to be transcluded, not a copy and paste raw format. (look at my signature markup for an example) Could you please change that as soon as possible? Transclusions make it way easier to fix and change the sig if ever needed. Thanks..
KrIsMa Anamation2.gif KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 00:13, 28 December 2015 (UTC)
I think an election is in need. EW's are important for the community to run, and our lack of any super active people is not good. Not that I'd be a good EW :P
Rollercoasterfan (talk | contribs) 16:23, 28 December 2015 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── After reading everyone's responses and talking a little bit with KrIsMa, I think we will have an election sometime next year. I have outlined the rules and procedures that I think we should use in my sandbox. Please take a look at them and suggest any changes you think we need.

I also asked scmb1 if having an election would be ok. Once we have a clear idea of how it's going to work and that scmb1 is ok with it, we'll decide on a date. As in previous elections, the existing EWs and admins will be in charge of running the election.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 16:29, 28 December 2015 (UTC)

I took a look at the rules and procedures. They all made sense and were very well said. I would suggest adding something along the lines of "being 'friendly' with admins and EWs will not increase your chances of being selected." as I foresee users commenting on admin/EWs talk pages saying hello, etc. to get them to like them more xD

St19 Galla Logo.png St19_Galla   Talk • Contribs  22:27, 28 December 2015 (UTC)
The rules and procedures look good! I think maybe we might need two new EWs...

Hamish752 (talk | contribs) 00:35, 29 December 2015 (UTC)
I think that two new EWs might be a good idea. What specific problems were there with previous elections?
Purplebook163's Profile Picture.gifpurplebook163 | Talk | Contribs | Edits 📖 📕 🔖 00:49, 29 December 2015 (UTC)
I agree with two new EWs, but I think we could get away with 1 :)

St19 Galla Logo.png St19_Galla   Talk • Contribs  01:10, 29 December 2015 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── I have one suggestion. In the section above "Rules" you refer to "the rules listed above." I suggest that the Rules be actually listed above that section, or that "the rules listed above" be changed to "the rules listed below." ;)
Amateurradiogeek15 (talk | contribs) 01:38, 29 December 2015 (UTC)

The rules look fair to me. I wonder if any wikians without a lot of edits on big articles will start editing. That's my only worry.
Programmer1121 (talk | contribs) 01:45, 29 December 2015 (UTC)
I'm replying to a bunch of people here, so this is going to be kind of messy.
1. While that is something of note, the detail about being friendly with admins is not an actual rule that people need to follow in order to keep a civil election. While it is true that we only really consider the stuff specifically listed, it's not an actual rule in the same way as the others.
2. I'm not sure whether we need one or two new EWs at the moment. I'll discuss this with the other EWs and admins that we have now and we'll decide. I'll keep everyone posted.
3. The problem with the previous election is that some users were rather angry about not being chosen to run in the final vote and the fact that someone who wasn't actually in charge of coordinating the election was trying to run it himself. I'd rather not go into more detail.
4. "Rules listed above" refers to the previous lines the user posted (all the "I agree/understand that..." stuff).
5. We will consider the overall behavior of all candidates who nominate themselves, and this includes anything they do in an obvious effort to be chosen. If someone just looks like they're making edits to get attention, then they probably won't make it onto the final list. The best thing to do from now until the election to be chosen is just to keep editing productively like normal.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 02:58, 29 December 2015 (UTC)
What can we do to make sure that no one is trying to run the election if they are not in charge?
Purplebook163's Profile Picture.gifpurplebook163 | Talk | Contribs | Edits 📖 📕 🔖 03:38, 29 December 2015 (UTC)
Not let them make any decisions :P @jvvg I didn't mean to make it into a rule, I meant rather as an informative statement :)

St19 Galla Logo.png St19_Galla   Talk • Contribs  04:07, 29 December 2015 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── @Purplebook163: This time we're going to be a lot more strict and clear about the rules of the election in order to make sure it runs smoothly. If anyone that's not actually an election coordinator tries to take control of the election, they will receive consequences in keeping with the Wiki guidelines. I'm specifically enumerating a rule about that this time. @st19_galla: I might make a "notes" section, but I'm still thinking about that.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 15:57, 29 December 2015 (UTC)

I outdented due to jvvgs text not looping to a new line. I think an informative "notes" section would be nice. It could include a basis on how the election works, voting, speeches, etc. Although it should probably not be called "notes" as those are very important xD
St19 Galla Logo.png St19_Galla   Talk • Contribs
Ok, I added a section titled "notes and stuff" that explains the voting and how we will decide which candidates will run.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 23:51, 29 December 2015 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── @jvvg: Your sandbox looks great. :D Could you add a section briefly describing the duties of any elected EWs? Maybe even add a section about what happens after the election as far as what their responsibilities will be, roughly how active they would be preferred to be, etc. that way they can get an idea of exactly what they are signing up for.

Also, would it be a good idea to set up how a tie would be broken? I saw that was a small problem when I looked over the talk pages of previous elections.
Purplebook163's Profile Picture.gifpurplebook163 | Talk | Contribs | Edits 📖 📕 🔖 01:25, 30 December 2015 (UTC)

We already have Scratch Wiki:Experienced Wikians to explain the duties. Most of the other stuff is pretty adaptable and not really set in stone. We also only discussed tie-breaking in the previous election in case it happened, but it didn't. However, if it does, we'll just use the most #1 votes, then the most #2 votes, and so on until the tie is broken.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 02:36, 30 December 2015 (UTC)
Oh, okay. Thanks for the answer.
Purplebook163's Profile Picture.gifpurplebook163 | Talk | Contribs | Edits 📖 📕 🔖 02:44, 30 December 2015 (UTC)
Also, I think an EW -> Admin election might be a good idea. Having an extra admin would be useful for those tasks which EWs can't do.

Hamish752 (talk | contribs) 08:47, 30 December 2015 (UTC)
We already chose KrIsMa to become an admin at the time of the election.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 14:42, 30 December 2015 (UTC)
Wow, congratulations KrIsMa! However, if that's the case, then I would suggest electing two new EWs as there would be no more active ones left. Hardmath's last contrib was in January and Turkey3 left a comment on the CP that he/she would no longer be active :(
St19 Galla Logo.png St19_Galla   Talk • Contribs
I agree, we should definitely have a new EW election!

AghaCool (talk | contribs) 010:28, 30 December 2015 (UTC)
Like I said, we'll discuss whether one or two is better after ErnieParke is back. I'll keep everyone posted. Also, we will probably have the election in March, but that isn't the final chosen date yet and may change.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 16:42, 30 December 2015 (UTC)

Scratch Team Wiki Page

So as you know, the Scratch Team is growing bigger and bigger. Currently, I think I've been the ONLY one that has been updating the Scratch Team Wiki Page. Their were many Scratch Team Members that had been retired for a while, but they were not in the Retired Members section.

I was wondering, since their are a lot of new Scratch Team Members, on the Scratch Team Wiki Page, I was wondering if we should put a section in the Scratch Team Wiki Page called newest scratch team members and we can all edit that section and when a new Scratch Team Member comes, we put his/her name, and we congradulate him/her on the Wiki Page by leaving a sentence - paragraph saying welcome (etc.) and then we show that new Scratch Team Member that wiki page and hopefully it'll be a big surprise for them!

The reason I wanted do this on the Scratch Wiki, is Scratch Team Members don't check it often so we have a better chance of surprising a new Scratch Team Member!

Anybody on board with this idea? Let me know!

--
AghaCool (talk | contribs) 10:40 30 December 2015 (UTC)

So, you want to announce new Scratch Team Members on the Wiki's home page like we do curators?
I don't know if this is off topic, but I think it would be kind of cool to welcome new Wiki users somewhere too- probably not the front page because that could take up a lot of room.
Purplebook163's Profile Picture.gifpurplebook163 | Talk | Contribs | Edits 📖 📕 🔖 22:25, 30 December 2015 (UTC)
We could possibly do what you suggested first. I was more thinking to have the surprise welcome and new scratch team members on the Wiki Page that lists all of the Scratch Team, but what you said first is fine too. As for what you said second, that would be kind of hard to do and it won't exactly matter that much. Do you know what I mean?
Anyone else have any thoughts on the Scratch Team Wiki Page and the welcoming new Scratch Team Members thing?

AghaCool (talk | contribs) 30 December 2015 (UTC)

Scratch Team Involvement in the Wiki

I have found two articles that are protected and only the Scratch Team can edit that are in much need of updating, clean up, or keeping up to wiki standards.

For example, Scratch Helper Groups is very short, and I would consider it a stub. Also, I believe "Future additions include groups that will support giving project feedback and moderating the Scratch forums." is no longer accurate.

Scratch Press is another good example. There are typos, missing categories, and missing templates on this page. "Lifehacker (February 2015) Top 10 Ways to Teacher Yourself to Code" should be "Lifehacker (February 2015) Top 10 Ways to Teach Yourself to Code". The page should have an External Programs and a Scratch Team Page template. It should also be categorized under Category:Scratch Culture.

How do we get the Scratch Team more involved in what happens on the wiki? What do we do to fix articles like these that aren't editable by us? Are there any active Scratch Team members that have wiki accounts or are interested in the wiki? Can these problems be fixed by an admin or EW?
Purplebook163's Profile Picture.gifpurplebook163 | Talk | Contribs | Edits 📖 📕 🔖 22:44, 30 December 2015 (UTC)

The Wiki is fairly autonomous and the Scratch Team really doesn't do much with it. Consequently, most of them don't really know how it works that well and aren't familiar with the writing standards we use. It would be nice to have the Scratch Team involved, as having technical issues resolved can take up to a week, even though the issue itself may be fairly simple. The possible upshot is that I may be going to MIT this fall (if I get in, fingers crossed), and if I do, they will likely let me administer the Wiki as a Scratch Team member. However, in the meantime, I actually can't edit the pages. They are only editable by Scratch Team members.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 23:01, 30 December 2015 (UTC)
user:LiFaytheGoblin could surely help: She is DACH-Scratch-Wiki-Author and Admin and currently became a new Scratch-Team-Member. Also Christan (user ceebee) a member of the Scratch-Team visited our weekley online hangout de:Scratch Club curently. The Scratch-Team seems to be interested to make more conections to the Scratch-Wikis again. An article with suggestions and wishes, how the Wikis could be even more connected with the Scratch-Mainpage and the Community could be a good idea.

I only have normal user rights here in the wiki as far as I see... However if I had the rights, I'd prefer if people rewrite the article on their talk page and I copy it over, so I don't have to worry about my english... - LiFaytheGoblin Avatar.png LiFaytheGoblin (Talk) 22:57, 1 January 2016 (UTC)
@Lifay: I suggest you ask the Scratch-Team to give you Bureaucrats-Rights:I think you would care for the wiki much more than anyone else of the Scratch-Team. I would also be happy if user:jvvg would get Scratch-Team-Member and Bureaucrat, because he is one of the most experienced Scratch-Wiki-Admins, but for the moment I think the fastest way getting a wiki-experienced-scratch-team-bureaucrat is Lifay applying for it. --

Spanish Scratch Wiki?

Hey,

The Spanish population is quickly growing! I was wondering if we have a Spanish Scratch Wiki (although I don't think we do.) I can speak Spanish pretty well. Do you know if someone could start a Spanish Wiki?

Thanks,
AghaCool (talk | contribs) 30 December 2015 (UTC)

I also speak Spanish fairly well. If you want to create a Spanish wiki, just go to the Test Wiki and request an account (I'll approve it, just mention that you want to create a Wiki in Spanish). For all of your articles, start them with "es:", such as "es:Página Principal". Once we have a bunch of articles and enough people join, we can ask for it to be made into its own Wiki.

¡Bueno suerte con el wiki de Español! Deseo que tiene muchas páginas.
On the bright side of things, I got InterwikiBot working again. It caught quite a few interwikis this time around.

Hi Ernie, Happy new year! I'm happy that you are back and hope you had a great time in California. 20 years ago I was on a 3-week holiday-cranaven tour from San Francisco including Las Vegas down to Los Angeles and even Tijuana (though I don't speak Spanish like you do): Great! Things I'm looking forward in 2016:

Interesting...

It's been nearly, if not two weeks since I changed my logo on the Main Site, nothing new on the Wiki yet though. Not terrible, but I thought it would have changed by now. :P I know it can take awhile for it to propagate to the Wiki, but I've never had it take this long before.

It's been like a month since I changed mine. But still, nothing....

Scratch Wiki Home Page...possible change?

Hi...On the Home Page, There is this text:

Made by Scratchers, for Scratchers. 967 articles since created on December 6, 2008

This doesn't seem to flow very well to me...

I like to suggest that it be changed to:

Made by Scratchers, for Scratchers. 967 articles created since December 6, 2008.

Amateurradiogeek15 (talk | contribs) 22:24, 1 January 2016 (UTC)

Yeah, that looks good. I'll do that.

Ok! :)

new pages

Hey! I've let my bot pass through all new pages that were created (here) (notice the interwiki bot working! yay!). Wonderful work everyone! Just a small reminder:

  • The best way to find out about how to make a page (say, a tutorial) is by looking at other tutorial pages.
    • Tutorials should not be super specific or super obvious. Tutorials should be made such that it can be developed. For example, how to open up a project isn't ok, as it cannot be developed further than Press "Open Project".
  • Avoid making stubs. Develop ideas fully. Even if there are format issues, a developed article can be changed easier than an undeveloped one.
  • If you don't know whether or not to make an article, begin it up in the CP!
  • All the rules on making a new page is located Scratch Wiki:New page policies and Scratch_Wiki:Editing_Conventions, but you can just look at other wiki pages to get a hang of what a up-to-standard page looks like.
  • small change It is "See Also" and "External Links", not "See also" and "External links" (capitalization). Also, the order you put the sections are See Also, External Links, References. ref:Scratch_Wiki_talk:Community_Portal/Archive_69#about_the_order_of_S.A.2C_E.L_and_Refs

That's all! Thanks for all of your help.

New year, new EWs

I said that I would keep everyone posted on the election, so here's the first major update:

The third Scratch Wiki election will take place in February 2016.

All relevant information is on the election page and the nomination page.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 03:06, 2 January 2016 (UTC)

Quick question! Do we have to have Scratch Accounts (I have one that I can use) but I was just wondering. Thank you! I'm so excited! I'm going to run!
AghaCool (talk | contribs) 14:36, 2 January 2016 (UTC)
No, you just need a Wiki account to run. The only requirement is that your account must have been created before January 1, 2016 (yesterday) and must have at least 50 mainspace edits (if we someone doing a lot of edits to increase their edit count leading up to the election, we probably won't choose them as a candidate).
jvvg (talk | contribs) 15:04, 2 January 2016 (UTC)
Okay! Cool! I'm really active in the Wiki and I'm definitely going to run! I'm so excited! Also, how can you find your edit count? Thank you.:D
AghaCool (talk | contribs) 15:24, 2 January 2016 (UTC)
Oh wait nevermind, I found it. Whew I have 500 edits!
AghaCool (talk | contribs) 15:38, 2 January 2016 (UTC)
Whoo, thanks for the update jvvg :) I'm looking forward to see who is elected :D Also, @AghaCool, make sure you are looking at this page for your edit count: http://wiki.scratch.mit.edu/wiki/Special:Editcount

Place for CP-threads that need "long time and hard work"

I suggest to make a place for outdated but "not done" CP-threads that must be very easy to find and draw attention to things that need long time and hard work but getting swiped of the "short time attention"-CP to fast. To make a start I created:

What do you think?

BACKGROUND

Seeing some threads, that I thought were important and "not done" being archived, was to me like a Déjà-vu to the time, when I posted again and again "please let's start Interwiki" over years and being embarrassed again and again, that all posts got archived without anything happening. Perhaps I'm not the only one who sees a problem in things that need long time attention getting swiped of this CP. I also understand that this things shouldn't block and lengthen the "daily routine" CP usage. So we must find a good compromise to care for some "long time lasting things" without bothering people that are only interested in "easy action + fast successes" (We call that "Dünnbrettbohrer" in Germany ;-).
MartinWollenweber (talk | contribs)

I agree 100% on what you're talking about. We really needed a place for not done CP-threads. I think what you did was a good idea! I'll take a look more in-depth of everything that hasn't been completed, a little later. Thanks!
AghaCool (talk | contribs) 14:42, 2 January 2016 (UTC)
Yeah, this is a good idea. It will be nice to be able to see long-term threads in a place where they won't get archived until they are done.
