How to edit on the Scratch Wiki

We recommend that before you create your question, you read these tips to editing on the Scratch Wiki.

  • Sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) after your post.
  • To do various text formatting, follow the following rules, rather than using any other text-editing methods:
    • Make text bold with text.
    • Make text italics with text.
    • Make text bold and italics with text.
    • Make a link to a page outside of this wiki with link text or if you don't want the Link icon.png symbol to appear (remember http:// prefix).
    • Make a link to an article on this wiki with Page name or Link text.
    • Make a link to a Wikipedia article with Wikipedia:Page name or Link text.
    • Indent a paragraph by putting a colon (:) before it.
    • For more, see the help page on formatting.
  • Put new text under old text.
  • Always remember to be polite and respectful, assume good faith, and be welcoming, while following the Scratch Community Guidelines.
  • When creating a new post, mark it as No Not done by putting not done at the top. Once the conversation has been resolved, replace it with done (producing Yes Done).

xD This reminds me of YouTube for some strange reason ;P
derpmeup (talk | contribs) 19:13, 14 October 2014 (UTC)
Why? I don't get it. My YouTube? BTW I just uploaded something :D
SSSLogo.png SuperSmashScratch (talk | contribs) 19:14, 14 October 2014 (UTC)
Seriously?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 19:30, 14 October 2014 (UTC)
No, people say 1st on YT way too much. xP

derpmeup (talk | contribs) 22:08, 14 October 2014 (UTC)
I think we are on topic because we are the number 1 wiki in the world. Right guys? That's what we were talking about? :P
-PRO- (talk | contribs) 22:55, 14 October 2014 (UTC)
Yeah, we're the best wiki :D But honestly, I like editing Wikipedia and Wiktionary too :3 Because they actually give users the patrol feature (but only to new pages, not all edits) on Wikipedia, I've patrolled about 150 new pages. Yay xP
derpmeup (talk | contribs) 00:50, 15 October 2014 (UTC)
Thank you jvvg. I now know which post it was where he said that.
SSSLogo.png SuperSmashScratch (talk | contribs) 18:18, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
Did you know I am the cause of Lightnin's famous quote "Stay on topic"?

Scratch News Change

When we put a new SDS into the news, the default message that we put is "The Scratch Team has released a new SDS!". But, it's actually the Scratch Team and the SDS curators, in fact, the SDS curators brainstorm many ideas for themes, and they all voice their opinions on new themes and when they should be released. Maybe we should change it to say "The Scratch Team and the SDS curators"?
derpmeup (talk | contribs) 22:08, 14 October 2014 (UTC)

I think it is the right thing to do but it is too long.
-PRO- (talk | contribs) 22:53, 14 October 2014 (UTC)
3 extra words is too long? :P
derpmeup (talk | contribs) 00:49, 15 October 2014 (UTC)
It's four more words.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 04:45, 15 October 2014 (UTC)
^^ :P
-PRO- (talk | contribs) 11:36, 15 October 2014 (UTC)
Oh! Never mind lol
derpmeup (talk | contribs) 13:55, 15 October 2014 (UTC)
But the Scratch Team is the only unit that has the ability to release it.

Shortcut deletions

Yes Done

In the old S:GUIDELINES, there were shortcuts to many sections and rules listed there - there were around 15 shortcuts leading to sections of that page. Can an admin or EW go through them and see which shortcuts need to be deleted?
derpmeup (talk | contribs) 02:45, 17 October 2014 (UTC)

I would but don't know what you mean... Shortcuts to what? All links seem fine to me,
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 03:19, 17 October 2014 (UTC)
like S:STARTREK
KrIsMa Anamation2.gif KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 03:23, 17 October 2014 (UTC)
That's not really what I meant :P Click here to see a list of redirects that go to an old section of that page, and delete the ones that aren't shown on the shortcuts template on the main guideline page.
derpmeup (talk | contribs) 18:52, 17 October 2014 (UTC)
I went through the old shortcuts, deleted them, and put new shortcuts in.
Mathfreak231 (talk | contribs) 13:46, 18 October 2014 (UTC)

Newer example projects

On most project tutorial articles it seems like the examples are all from 2010 or 2011 and made in Scratch 1.4. Maybe they should be updated to Scratch 2.0 projects that newer users could relate to more?
Djdolphin (talk | contribs) 02:55, 17 October 2014 (UTC)

That's not a bad idea! Feel free to start working on some new tutorial articles and move the 1.4 tutorials to have (1.4) at the end of their name :)
derpmeup (talk | contribs) 03:02, 17 October 2014 (UTC)
Bravo! I like that idea.
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 03:17, 17 October 2014 (UTC)
I made the account Wiki_Scripting a long time ago---want me to dig it out again?
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 03:31, 17 October 2014 (UTC)
@derpmeup I think you misunderstood. It's not about rewriting the tutorials, it's about changing the example project links.
@Krett What for..?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 09:06, 17 October 2014 (UTC)
@scimonster: Krett12 just loves making accounts for absolutely no reason.
-PRO- (talk | contribs) 11:46, 17 October 2014 (UTC)
Well I have an account on a lot of different wikis.....
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 13:00, 17 October 2014 (UTC)
So... what do y'all think about my actual idea?
Djdolphin (talk | contribs) 16:53, 18 October 2014 (UTC)
I like it.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 17:21, 18 October 2014 (UTC)

Footer

A link to the statistics page was added to the footer on the main site under Scratch Wiki on the community section. Can somebody who can change the wiki skin update the footer?
derpmeup (talk | contribs) 20:19, 17 October 2014 (UTC)

I will make a Pull Request on GitHub.
-PRO- (talk | contribs) 13:01, 18 October 2014 (UTC)

IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO ALL WIKIANS : YOU NEED TO READ THIS!

Unfortunately your essential Krettie will be leaving for three days and we need a new Most Active Wikian. I choose derpmeup.

oh ok ;)
and ps the title too "big"?? ;) (we dont all need to see it :P)

You'd be shocked if you saw my actions count in Special:ActiveUsers Smiley - Cat Face.png
derpmeup (talk | contribs) 02:50, 18 October 2014 (UTC)
Oh, ok. Smiley - Cat Face.png
SSSLogo.png SuperSmashScratch (talk | contribs) 16:32, 18 October 2014 (UTC)
Well, now that I think about it, really, derpmeup is the most active wikian, not Krett12. xD
SSSLogo.png SuperSmashScratch (talk | contribs) 20:36, 19 October 2014 (UTC)
Dig this, you who questions my activeness. If I get on 10 times a day and make 1 edit each time I check RC, and derpmeup gets on twice a day and makes 10 edits. Which is more, 10 or 2? 10. That makes me more active. boom. But it seems like derpmeup is more active because they make 20 edits a day, not 10. Don't try; I always win.
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 21:46, 19 October 2014 (UTC)
Nah I make like 50-100 a day ;P
derpmeup (talk | contribs) 00:40, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

Any articles that I can edit that need cleaning up or updating?

I'm in the mood to edit some articles tomorrow, so I'm wondering what articles need a serious case of clean-up or updating so that I can work on editing them. Or at least ones that need it very badly. The wiki is good, but "good" is not good. We need to strive for excellence.

All of those categories will work. Sometimes, though, I'll press random page to get to a random page, and if it's not about a block (because there's not too much to write about them), I'll press edit and expand what I can. I definitely do use all those categories too, though ;)

Thanks to all of you! I'll go through them and see what I can do this afternoon. I have to eat lunch now. :-/.
TheHockeyist (talk | contribs) 17:46, 18 October 2014 (UTC)
I just decided to expand the Current () page a bit by adding a section about how 05:09:03 can appear as 5:9:3 if you're not careful and a way to fix it.

Scratch Trends article

Are we ever going to create one? I think it was decided here that we would be making one.
SSSLogo.png SuperSmashScratch (talk | contribs) 20:31, 18 October 2014 (UTC)

Oops, it wasn't decided yet. Well, time to revive the discussion either way :P
SSSLogo.png SuperSmashScratch (talk | contribs) 20:32, 18 October 2014 (UTC)
Sure - I'll go ahead and start the article right now!

Why don't we allow capitalization redirects?

Sometimes, if you search something but use the wrong capitalization (or manipulate the URL to get to a page), it'll say the page won't exist. I'm just wondering - why don't we allow capitalization redirects? I don't see anything bad about them...
derpmeup (talk | contribs) 01:24, 19 October 2014 (UTC)

I'm asking this because jvvg deleted every one of them back in March and deletes all of the new ones, but what's the reason for not having them?
derpmeup (talk | contribs) 02:13, 19 October 2014 (UTC)
At some point we decided to dump them, but i can't find the discussion.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 10:37, 19 October 2014 (UTC)
The department of redundancy department doesn't approve of them. In real words, they're unnecessary redirects. Having two pages of the same name except for capitalization just wastes space (not so much on the disk but in the search bar). If I am searching for a page and I type in the first two words (assuming several pages begin with those two words), a capitalization redirect is one potential entry on the list that won't go to another actually different page.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 14:33, 19 October 2014 (UTC)

New features!

scmb1 has implemented two new features:

  • Hiding specific revisions from a page (like what we do when a user shares contact info)
  • Adding an EW level of protection

Admins, if you have any questions, I can probably answer them.

Thank you scmb1 for putting this in!
jvvg (talk | contribs) 02:02, 19 October 2014 (UTC)

Awesome! Did she just edit the github, or the main server?
derpmeup (talk | contribs) 02:03, 19 October 2014 (UTC)
The main server. GitHub doesn't actually affect what's on the server, stuff needs to be manually pulled.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 02:10, 19 October 2014 (UTC)
Okay!
derpmeup (talk | contribs) 02:11, 19 October 2014 (UTC)
@jvvg: Neat! It's interesting to see new helpful features coming to the wiki. Thank you Scmb1!
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 02:15, 19 October 2014 (UTC)
Nice to finally have this. Thanks scmb1!
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 10:30, 19 October 2014 (UTC)
I know I don't have it but, good work scmb1!
JayceeMinecraft (talk | contribs) 10:36, 19 October 2014 (UTC)

Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 12:25, 19 October 2014 (UTC)
derpmeup: I made that pull request on github and scmb1 pulled it in. It was added.

Block Articles category

Should I make a category that will contain all of the articles about blocks, or is that a bit too vague?
derpmeup (talk | contribs) 03:01, 19 October 2014 (UTC)

I don't think it's needed. See also Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Block

When will the next election be held?

I am assuming it will be in the autumn of 2015, based on the last two election cycles. I have updated the elections article to include this speculative information. If I am assuming wrong, please update the article with the correct information. Thank you.
TheHockeyist (talk | contribs) 23:59, 19 October 2014 (UTC)

We hold them whenever we feel a need, which depends on the amount of active EWs and admins. There is not a fixed time schedule. As such, I reverted your edits.
