How to edit on the Scratch Wiki

We recommend that before you create your question, you read these tips to editing on the Scratch Wiki.

  • Sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) after your post.
  • To do various text formatting, follow the following rules, rather than using any other text-editing methods:
    • Make text bold with text.
    • Make text italics with text.
    • Make text bold and italics with text.
    • Make a link to a page outside of this wiki with [ link text] or if you don't want the Link icon.png symbol to appear (remember http:// prefix).
    • Make a link to an article on this wiki with Page name or Link text.
    • Make a link to a Wikipedia article with Wikipedia:Page name or Link text.
    • Indent a paragraph by putting a colon (:) before it.
    • For more, see the help page on formatting.
  • Put new text under old text.
  • Always remember to be polite and respectful, assume good faith, and be welcoming, while following the Scratch Community Guidelines.
  • When creating a new post, mark it as No Not done by putting not done at the top. Once the conversation has been resolved, replace it with done (producing Yes Done).

not done:

Threads that need "long time and hard work" will not be archived, but moved to Scratch Wiki talk:Community Portal/not done. Actually you can read and continue following threads there:

To make sure that your thread will not be archive put the template No Not done at the top.
Don't forget to replace it with the Yes Done template when the thread is finally finished.

Scratch Team Wiki Page

So as you know, the Scratch Team is growing bigger and bigger. Currently, I think I've been the ONLY one that has been updating the Scratch Team Wiki Page. Their were many Scratch Team Members that had been retired for a while, but they were not in the Retired Members section.

I was wondering, since their are a lot of new Scratch Team Members, on the Scratch Team Wiki Page, I was wondering if we should put a section in the Scratch Team Wiki Page called newest scratch team members and we can all edit that section and when a new Scratch Team Member comes, we put his/her name, and we congradulate him/her on the Wiki Page by leaving a sentence - paragraph saying welcome (etc.) and then we show that new Scratch Team Member that wiki page and hopefully it'll be a big surprise for them!

The reason I wanted do this on the Scratch Wiki, is Scratch Team Members don't check it often so we have a better chance of surprising a new Scratch Team Member!

Anybody on board with this idea? Let me know!

AghaCool (talk | contribs) 10:40 30 December 2015 (UTC)

So, you want to announce new Scratch Team Members on the Wiki's home page like we do curators?
I don't know if this is off topic, but I think it would be kind of cool to welcome new Wiki users somewhere too- probably not the front page because that could take up a lot of room.
Purplebook163's Profile Picture.gifpurplebook163 | Talk | Contribs | Edits 📖 📕 🔖 22:25, 30 December 2015 (UTC)
We could possibly do what you suggested first. I was more thinking to have the surprise welcome and new scratch team members on the Wiki Page that lists all of the Scratch Team, but what you said first is fine too. As for what you said second, that would be kind of hard to do and it won't exactly matter that much. Do you know what I mean?
Anyone else have any thoughts on the Scratch Team Wiki Page and the welcoming new Scratch Team Members thing?

Place for CP-threads that need "long time and hard work"

Yes Done - this thread can be archived now because we have a shorter replacement at the top of the cp.

I suggest to make a place for outdated but "not done" CP-threads that must be very easy to find and draw attention to things that need long time and hard work but getting swiped of the "short time attention"-CP to fast. To make a start I created:

What do you think?

Seeing some threads, that I thought were important and "not done" being archived, was to me like a Déjà-vu to the time, when I posted again and again "please let's start Interwiki" over years and being embarrassed again and again, that all posts got archived without anything happening. Perhaps I'm not the only one who sees a problem in things that need long time attention getting swiped of this CP. I also understand that this things shouldn't block and lengthen the "daily routine" CP usage. So we must find a good compromise to care for some "long time lasting things" without bothering people that are only interested in "easy action + fast successes" (We call that "Dünnbrettbohrer" in Germany ;-).
MartinWollenweber (talk | contribs)

I agree 100% on what you're talking about. We really needed a place for not done CP-threads. I think what you did was a good idea! I'll take a look more in-depth of everything that hasn't been completed, a little later. Thanks!
AghaCool (talk | contribs) 14:42, 2 January 2016 (UTC)
Yeah, this is a good idea. It will be nice to be able to see long-term threads in a place where they won't get archived until they are done.

No Not done . Or do you think it is done?

DACH-Scratch-Wiki-Frontpage-Features at 2016-1-2.png

The de:Hauptseite (Frontpage) has some innovative features. Have a detail look at the picture to the right, to see it explained in the English bubble-help. Perhaps a discussion about some of that features could be interesting for Scratch_Wiki_Home too? What do you think?

Some Features are:

  1. Edit-Link to every Box
  2. Headline-Link to every Box
  3. Picture-Link in "Article of the Week"
  4. Dates of upcoming and past Scratch-Events
  5. Picture-Links to 5 selected Articles (not just only one "picture of the week" without link where it is used)
  6. List of Articles that are new or changed very much (so every Author can add their articles + there are much changes: => very motivating for readers an authors)
  7. List of interesting categories
  8. Creative Commons Logo (CC BY-SA 4.0, nearly like licensing of Wikipedia, see )

MartinWollenweber (talk | contribs) 19:50, 2 January 2016 (UTC)

Hi! I think the features are great and I think we should implement some of those features into the Scratch Wiki Home Page. We do not have an edit link to each box and I'm not sure that is necessary since only EW's/admins can access change the Scratch Wiki Home Page. The Dates of Upcoming Scratch Events is a good idea. What we could've done is added the event "Hour of Code" on the Scratch Wiki Homepage and some other upcoming events in the future instead of just having the FPC listed on the home page. I also like the idea of having the list of articles that are changes a lot in the homepage too. Thanks for sharing this with us!:D
AghaCool (talk | contribs) 20:09, 2 January 2016 (UTC)
@MartinWollenweber: I'll comment on these one by one:
  1. The front page and the various templates can only be edited by EW/admins, so this won't be helpful.
  2. Done.
  3. That sounds like a nice idea. Not every article has an image though...
  4. This also sounds nice. The Wiki traditionally has been stringent with what it puts as news. I think it would be nice to be more flexible.
  5. We actually have two pictures of the "week". ;)
  6. Another interesting idea.
  7. That is going to take a long time to even add. Also, I understand it was helpful for the German Wiki to have the license image, but is it helpful to have for the English Wiki?
    ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 21:53, 2 January 2016 (UTC)
Very interesting, deserves to be on the English Wiki!

Front Page Updated... Thoughts?

Following MartinWollenweber's post and pointers, I have updated the front page with some of the best ideas put forth earlier. What does everyone think of it now? Are there any new ideas on how it can be improved?

Thank you for the feedback The_Grits and Programmer1121!
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 04:40, 15 January 2016 (UTC)
Yes, that are some slight but very effective improvements :-)
MartinWollenweber (talk | contribs) 13:50, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

Your favorite additional feature?

My favorite feature is the box "List of Articles that are new or changed very much".
What is yours?
Are their additional ideas for features to make the start page more attractive?

Suggestions to connect with the main website?

No Not done

You all may have noticed that we're relatively detached from the main Scratch website. We're trying to fix that by connecting the Wiki with the main site as much as we can, and we would like your input! Any ideas would be appreciated.

Please post your suggestions here

Scratch News

No Not done Do we really have to announce new FPC's and SDS's? Can't people just look at the front page? I think It should be about new and retiring ST members, and stuff that would go in the announcements.
Coke11 (talk | contribs) 13:10, 9 January 2016 (UTC)

I agree. That stuff is kind of obvious, and not very important. Also, it happens a lot, so it doesn't always get updated on time. For example, bjskistad was only curator for 1 or 2 more days when he or she was announced as the curator. Also, I think updates to Scratch should be announced.
Mitopolis (talk | contribs) 15:27, 9 January 2016 (UTC)
Coke11 (talk | contribs) 18:44, 9 January 2016 (UTC)
I agree, the News panel does need some revamps in what we put there. However, FPC's and (at least) SDS's are notable and fun to know about. Even though they might be on the Scratch front page doesn't mean we can't have it. I can understand though that FPC do get updated very frequently, every week, and might not be too notable.
Tomorrow I might add a bit of info to the news updating guidelines.
Update: I instead updated the News to include a somewhat recent update. That should act as a precedent.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 04:21, 10 January 2016 (UTC)
I agree with ErnieParke. I think that it is fun to know new SDS's and new FPC's, but we should also add new news like as you said new Scratch Team Members.
AghaCool (talk | contribs) 15:03, 10 January 2016 (UTC)
Maybe we could keep SDS news as it doesn't change too often, but maybe remove the FPC news, as users such as "thenextcurator" are becoming quite popular.

Should We Move Content on the Computer Science to a New Article?

No Not done I realize now that when I wrote the Computer Science article a while back, I put in a lot about computer hardware, which is realistically a separate field. Do you think I should make a page on Computer Hardware? After all, it relates to Scratch, because you can't run Scratch if you have no hardware!
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 18:33, 18 January 2016 (UTC)

While I guess you're right in it relating to Scratch, it doesn't really relate in the sense of a geared-towards-children's block programming language xD I think that the materials listed in the article are very advanced for the younger, more popular age range in Scratch, and as such, should be more contained. While I completely agree it's great to have it, I think those topics should be less focused on and more together in one place. :) However, your topic covers a very wide range of information, so I do think a seperate article would be appropriate.

Yes Done Can some help me format the images on the BeetleBlocks page?
JayceeMinecraft (talk | contribs) 19:24, 18 January 2016 (UTC)

I was actually thinking delete that page. I think very few Scratchers know about BeetleBlocks. I don't consider it notable at all.
Mitopolis (talk | contribs) 21:09, 18 January 2016 (UTC)
That's the whole thing. Since not many Scratchers know about BeetleBlocks, we should tell them about it with that page.

Hamish752 (talk | contribs) 23:07, 18 January 2016 (UTC)
Things need to be notable to be on here. I might make the "Non-Notable Scratch Wiki" on my userpage. I would put BeetleBlocks there.
Mitopolis (talk | contribs) 01:12, 19 January 2016 (UTC)
It's a programming language based off Scratch, which uses software developed by a former Scratch Team member. How is that not notable? We have pages for Scratch Extensions and also a page for Snap!, and this is very similar. I say we keep it.

Hamish752 (talk | contribs) 03:30, 19 January 2016 (UTC)
@JayceeMinecraft: I formatted the images on BeetleBlock. What do you think?
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 15:10, 19 January 2016 (UTC)
When someting is notable, most Scratchers know about it. Scratch Wiki:New Page Policies
Mitopolis (talk | contribs) 03:06, 20 January 2016 (UTC)
This discussion about deleting the article BeetleBlocks, reminds me awkwardly to the horrible "deleting discussions" in the German Wikipedia: IMHO German Wikipedians spent more time with discussions, if or not articles should be deleted than writing new articles: I already had that years ago with the German Wikipedia-Articles I wrote about Scratch, BYOB and Snap! Nobody talks about if the article is useful knowledge for the reader, but only about if it fulfills the relevance-laws, that only about 250(!!!) German Wikipedia admins practice so strict (without asking the 100 Million readers!), that the number of authors decreased in the last years rapidly because most authors loose interst when their articles got deleted, after investing lots of time and efforts. I hate this "deleting knowledge'-thing of the German Wikipedia and I'm happy that the English Wikipedia is not like that. PLEASE don't start that thing here at the Scratch-Wiki!!! Instead of doing that, you could risk a look at this Video of Eric Rosenbaum, a former member of the Scratch Team, demonstrating BeetleBlocks at the Scratch2015AMS. Also have a look at S:CPND#Lack of curiosity at Scratch Wiki? where lots of things, that are worth writing an article about, are still waiting.
MartinWollenweber (talk | contribs) 16:07, 22 January 2016 (UTC)
+1 let's use our energy to make and improve articles instead of discussing about their deletion.

New Template

No Not done Should we add

DocumentInQuestion.png Is is in question whether the subject of this page meets the Scratch Wiki's notability guidelines. You can discuss whether you want it deleted or not on its talk page.
Reason: {}

as a template?
Mitopolis (talk | contribs) 03:01, 21 January 2016 (UTC)
No support, just use Not notable instead.

Hamish752 (talk | contribs) 03:08, 21 January 2016 (UTC)
You can, but notability is why most people use that template. Why not have it as its own template?
Mitopolis (talk | contribs) 03:19, 21 January 2016 (UTC)
You could just use not notable to get that. It would just be easier.
Mitopolis (talk | contribs) 03:21, 21 January 2016 (UTC)
NotUseful is better IMO since it is a general template that indicates we might not want the page, but it lets you be more specific too. Having multiple templates suggesting we might want to delete the page seems redundant.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 12:56, 21 January 2016 (UTC)
I'll temporarily put it on BeetleBlocks as an example.
Mitopolis (talk | contribs) 21:00, 21 January 2016 (UTC)
I made a better example here.

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────Or here.
Popular GIF.gif Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 21:15, 27 January 2016 (UTC)

I think notUseful replaces it well.
KrIsMa Anamation2.gif KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 17:54, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
The main purpose is that it would be faster and it already has a link to Scratch Wiki:New Page Policies, which really decides if we keep a page. Also, BeetleBlocks seems like it is nothing but a violation of those guidelines. Maybe one of us should ask non-Wikians on the main site if they know about BeetleBlocks. Most would probably ask, "What's BeetleBlocks?"
Popular GIF.gif Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 20:48, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
Hm, no offence please but I don't quite see how most people not knowing something is a reason against having an article on the wiki where people can in fact learn about things that exist in the world of Scratch that they didn't know about before? I don't know, does that make sense? - LiFaytheGoblin Avatar.png LiFaytheGoblin (Talk) 21:03, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
Those policies clearly state that something must be notable to be on here.
Popular GIF.gif Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 21:08, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
They say, "Only create pages for Scratch modifications that would widely be considered extremely notable." BeetleBlocks would widely be considered extremely un-notable.
Popular GIF.gif Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 21:17, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
It is indeed a requirement to create a page, but please keep the discussion about BeetleBlocks on its talk page. As that applies to this template, it's also a requirement that articles be appropriate (we actually used to have a template for that, but we removed it), not duplicates, and clearly related to Scratch, but we don't have templates for all those. We just use NotUseful instead, since it's a multi-purpose template.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 02:11, 29 January 2016 (UTC)

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────OK. Do you think this would benefit, hurt, or not affect the Wiki?
Popular GIF.gif Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 02:14, 29 January 2016 (UTC)

It probably wouldn't hurt per se, but I don't think it would help much. One of the goals of the Wiki is avoiding redundancy, and at least in my opinion, the NotUseful template accomplishes basically the same thing, but also puts pages in a category so we can see them all at once.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 12:45, 29 January 2016 (UTC)
OK. It would be so you could be more specific about why it isn't notable without a super-long reason.
Popular GIF.gif Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 17:04, 29 January 2016 (UTC)
You could still do <Not notable because most Scratchers haven't heard of it>. That isn't that long (it really only adds the first three words) but still brings across the same message.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 02:14, 30 January 2016 (UTC)

My Apologies!

Hey Guys! Just wanted to say sorry for not being active in the last couple of days! Exams are finally over so my free time is back up a bit ready to be spent on the wiki. Thanks!
St19 Galla Logo.png St19_Galla   Talk • Contribs

Also, I am going to start the task of adding citations in replace of citation needed. It is my belief that a good wiki is one that is as true and factual as possible and part of making that happen starts with removing [citation needed] templates. Throughout the next couple of weeks you will probably see a lot of my edits starting with the word "OpCit:". That simply means that that edit was only about adding a citation. I'm hoping that this task will make the wiki better and more factual place. :)
St19 Galla Logo.png St19_Galla   Talk • Contribs
No apologies needed! Real life should always take priority over the Wiki, since we after all do all lead lives outside of here. Anyway, it's nice to see that you're back, and I'm glad that someone is tackling the large amount of needed citations.

Much nicer editor. Can you add an item for the <scratchblocks></scratchblocks> tags?

Very interesting! Although, when I turned all lab features on and the new extension, the publish button on the top right isn't working.

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── also, there is a blue bar on the right of the edit text box when no labs are enabled, which makes it blank. it seems out of place

Make vector skin default

Popular GIF.gif Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 17:38, 28 January 2016 (UTC)

This skin looks better, relative to Scratch's main site. Vector looks generic and disconnected from Scratch.
KrIsMa Anamation2.gif KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 17:51, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
Ok. I just thought vector was easier to navigate in. ScratchWikiSkin seems buggy and crowded, especially on laptops.

Popular GIF.gif Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 18:02, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
Admittedly, the SWS isn't great on small screens. However, instead of just throwing in the towel and using a stock skin, we should instead work on improving the Scratch skin so that it does work better on smaller screens. Once the front page skin on the website goes live to everywhere else, we are going to start a major rewrite of the skin to copy the style here. However, in the meantime, we want to be clear that the Wiki is a part of Scratch, and keeping the design consistent is an important way to do that.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 18:11, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
Ok. For one thing, we can remove the 1-inch margins.
Popular GIF.gif Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 18:20, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
That's to make sure pages have consistent width, I think. It makes managing the front page easier at least. Having a smaller margin at that screen size would make the skin worse for smaller screens.
Then again, I never made the skin.

You can see the entire skin code on Github.

Popular GIF.gif Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 02:46, 8 February 2016 (UTC)
MediaWiki skins are a lot more complicated than just a single CSS file, so you do need MediaWiki in order to be able to test it, and you need a Github account to send changes to the ST to put on the Wiki.

EW Election Discussion/Announcement Thread

No Not done

The previous thread was archived, so I'm continuing here.

Just a reminder to everybody that nominations open on February 1, 2016 (Monday). If I set it up right, the page will automatically unprotect itself at midnight UTC (7:00 PM Scratch Time). If that doesn't work, I'll unprotect it myself as soon as I am aware. Once the page is unprotected, users may nominate themselves. All you need to do is click the link at Scratch Wiki:Elections/February 2016/Nominations and submit the edit (please check that it displays everything properly and let me know if it doesn't).

A few reminders:

  • Remember that your account must have been created before January 1, 2016 and must at least have 50 mainspace edits if you wish to nominate yourself.
  • Nomination will be open for several days - you don't need to rush there immediately
  • We don't give any weight to the order in which users nominate themselves when choosing candidates

With that, happy election!

Awesome~! I'm really excited! Thanks for working on this, jvvg!

Nominations open in about 1 hour. Remember that you don't all need to rush there at once, since nominations will be open for several days, and we don't care about the order users nominate themselves in.

Hello all fellow "Scratch Wikians", it's me, PrincessPandaLover! Since September 2014, I have been making very essential and helpful edits to all the mainspace articles, such as adding references, pictures, and important content (wow, almost made 2,500 edits); oh, and also removing unneeded content and creating several articles and redirects. I'm very sweet and gentle, welcoming new scratchers and supporting users whenever they're in trouble. Everyday, I pop up onto the wiki, review the recent changes, and do whatever needs to be done. Whenever an interesting discussion pops up, I immediately join into the conversation and start chatting about what needs to be done. Scratching since June 2013, I have a decent amount of Scratch knowledge and will not hesitate to share my methods and skills. I hope you'll vote for me and gladly congratulate me for joining in this year's election, stay Sonic!

Popular GIF.gif Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 03:02, 9 February 2016 (UTC)
Nice speech, PPL! Here's mine...

Hey, I'm Hamish752! I've been here for 6 months now, and I've made 1200+ edits. I don't believe that edit counts really matter though, I think that the quality is what's important. I try to make sure that all of my edits really do make the Wiki a better place. In the time I've been here, I've made many new pages and expanded countless others. I often make redirects, fix grammar and upload images. I know lots of wiki code, HTML and CSS, which is helpful for templates. I want to be an EW so I have the powers needed to do things without having to ask an admin, such as deleting pages which go against the guidelines. I stalk Recent Changes like a hawk, and I always try to fix things when needed. I also think I'd be great at reviewing account requests, as I've had the same kind-of role as FPC and SDS curator. I enjoy welcoming new users to the Wiki, and I'm always happy to answer their questions. Thanks for reading, and good luck to all! :)

Quick question: does the limit of 8 lines mean that it can't go over 8 lines if you put it on a blank page (like above), or how many lines it takes up when it's put on the speeches page (which has a smaller border)?

Hamish752 (talk | contribs) 06:01, 9 February 2016 (UTC)
Lines as sentences. :)
KrIsMa Anamation2.gif KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 16:31, 9 February 2016 (UTC)
Great speeches! This is mine:

I believe that the Scratch Wiki is a wonderful place for anyone to learn more about a wide variety of topics. I'm so grateful that I get to be here editing alongside you guys. However, I also feel that the wiki could use some valuable improvements. With contributions ranging from creating and editing many pages, I hope that you'll see me as an Experienced Wikian who will help approve account requests, keep the Wiki from being vandalized, and ensuring that it continues to be an amazing place for Scratchers to go for learning. I have experience doing the tedious work from being an SDS Curator and will approve account requests very quickly and efficiently. I pledge to be extremely active, easy-to-reach, connected to the main site (for updating the News Section and various articles), and the best EW I can be. Thank you for all of your contributions to the Scratch Wiki and for considering me to be one of the elected EWs. Wiki On! -St19_Galla

I believe it fits the requirements, but if not, I will gladly change it. I'm still a bit confused on the whole line vs sentence thing :P
St19 Galla Logo.png St19_Galla   Talk • Contribs

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Ohhh, 8 sentences? Okay, here's my new (8 sentence) speech...
I've been here for 6 months now, and I've made 1200+ edits, I don't believe that edit counts really matter though, I think that the quality is what's important. I try to make sure that all of my edits really do make the Wiki a better place. In the time I've been here, I've made many new pages and expanded countless others, I often make redirects, fix grammar, add interwiki links and upload images, I also enjoy welcoming new users to the Wiki, and I'm always happy to answer their questions. I know lots of wiki code, HTML and CSS, which is helpful for templates. I want to be an EW so I have the powers needed to do things without having to ask an admin, such as deleting pages which go against the guidelines. I'm very active here on the wiki, which means that I could quickly update the news as soon as it comes out, I also constantly check recent changes, and I always try to fix things when needed. I also think I'd be great at reviewing account requests, as I've had the same kind-of role as Front Page Curator, an SDS curator and a Welcoming Committee Curator, where I've shown patience, and I've used my judgement to review projects, similar to reviewing account requests. Thanks for reading, and good luck to all!
Hamish752 (talk | contribs) 21:50, 9 February 2016 (UTC)

Here is my speech.

I would make a great EW because I would be able to deeply disect account requests and wisely decide wether or not the person applying is a good pick for a Wiki Editor. Though I haven't made as many edits as others, I'm still a good writer. Like the Wiki is always saying, it's not the number of edits that matter, it's the quality. I like to sit down and hit the "Random" button on the wiki and correct as many errors as I can find; these are the kind of quality edits I make. While I haven't been very active as of late, I will be very active soon. I will be able to focus a great amount of my energy into the Wiki. I look forward to the chance of being able to quickly and efficently take care of the needs of this Wiki, such as deleting pages, updating the news, and confirming accounts. Thank you for this great oppurtunity!

Here's mine!

Hey everybody! I’m The_Grits, and I’ve been on the Wiki for just over a year. I have nearly 3 years of experience in web development and am very familiar with markup, experience that helps me a lot when I edit the Wiki. I tend to help out in the Wiki by discussing issues in the Community Portal, expanding stubs so that they can be unstubbed, or by simply fixing the grammatical and factual errors I come across in the Wiki. The Wiki is an important learning resource for Scratchers of all stages, a resource that needs to be kept up-to-date and accurate. This is why I would like to help the community even more by becoming an Experienced Wikian. Thank you for your consideration! - The_Grits

I voted, but I didn't notice that we were supposed to vote for ourselves last. Oops. When I press "reset" or "startover" I am repeatedly told that I have allready voted upon login. Is there a way for me to vote again? I just want to make sure that my vote is valid.

Voting does indeed end tonight at 12 midnight UTC or 7 PM Scratch Time. Results will be announced shortly after (i.e. as soon as I can get on my computer, which hopefully won't take that long), and I have adjusted the votes for everybody running in the election who didn't rank themselves last.

Wiki Cleanup

No Not done We haven't started it yet! I was thinking, some pages need to be simplified. Others are too simple. And there are more that need updating. The stubs. Also, a bunch of files need reverting/updating. I bet there is at least some vandalism on at least 1 page. I thought, let's clean up the Wiki! VoxBot might help, because we can ask it questions and they'll get answered. I was thinking call it "Wiki Cleanup." It would look like this:

when gf clicked
if <the current page is a stub?> then
expand this page
if <the current page is too complicated?> then
simplify this page
if <the current page is too simple?> then
make this page slightly more complex//Notice that I said "complex," not "complicated." We would keep it easy to understand, but make it describe what it is about in more of detail.
if <the current page is unhelpful?> then
ask an admin to delete this page
if <the current page has been vandalized?> then
un-vandalize this page
if <the current page is a file?> then
if <the current file is outdated?> then
update this file
if <the current file needs to be reverted?> then
revert this file

Maybe we could do it every 2 months or something?

Mitopolis (talk | contribs) 16:14, 5 January 2016 (UTC)

We're sort of trying to do this all of the time, it just can be forgotten at times though. Thank you for the idea! Maybe it could be something we do regularly, sort of as a collective push. Maybe we could add some incentives?
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 23:01, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
Sorry, I don't know what incentives are. I mainly got the idea from reading about Operation: Cleanups on the TBG article. Should we start it?
Mitopolis (talk | contribs) 16:35, 6 January 2016 (UTC)
This is a response to here and my talk page. Incentives are basically rewards to make people what to edit more. For example, you have to mow my lawn. The incentive is, if you mow my lawn today, I will give you five pieces of hand-made chocolate.
On second thought, I don't think we need a special event to be editing the Wiki. If people have time and want to edit, they will.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 00:01, 10 January 2016 (UTC)
The point is to help us find the problems. This would work because, during Wiki Cleanup, finding things to change could be our main focus.

Popular GIF.gif Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 20:38, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
A better script would be
when gf clicked
repeat until <all of the pages are good enough to end cleanup for now?>
if <the current page is a stub?> then
expand this page
if <the current page is too complicated?> then
simplify this page
if <the current page is too simple?> then
make this page slightly more complex//Notice that I said "complex," not "complicated." We would keep it easy to understand, but make it describe what it is about in more of detail.
if <the current page is unhelpful?> then
if <I am an admin?> then
delete this page
ask an admin to delete this page
if <the current page has been vandalized?> then
un-vandalize this page
if <the current page is a file?> then
if <the current file is outdated?> then
update this file
if <the current file needs to be reverted?> then

Wiki Wednesday

Good news! Via LiFay, who is a Scratch Team member, I have learned that we will soon be having a Wiki Wednesday on the Scratch main website. Details are still fuzzy, but the plan is to feature, on the Scratch website, a new article each month. There are a few things we need to do to make sure this works:

  • We need to make a single page for the article of the month, which we will EW protect. Featured article text will be copy and pasted into the article of the month page. If any changes need to be made, those changes should be communicated to EW/admins via their talk page or via the article of the month talk page.
  • We need to make sure we pick an article of the month every month. I propose doing everything two weeks before hand to be extra secure. We have to pick things by the Monday before Wiki Wednesday.

The really fun stuff is that:

  • Wiki Wednesday should be featured in Scratch news. Yay!
  • Wiki Wednesday will also be featured in the forums.
  • International wikis might get to join in on the fun.

Note that things are still being discussed and can be changed.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 20:47, 8 February 2016 (UTC)

Sounds super cool! This should be great to link the wiki to the main site!
The_Grits (talk | contribs) 20:53, 8 February 2016 (UTC)
Definitely! That's the main purpose of this.
By the way, I update with a few more details.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 20:56, 8 February 2016 (UTC)
Woah, sounds awesome! That's a great idea! :D

Hamish752 (talk | contribs) 21:03, 8 February 2016 (UTC)
New updates! The first Wiki Wednesday will be on February 24th, 2016. It will now happen on the last Wednesday of each month. I will be creating the protected Article of the Month page later on today.
For now, it would be nice if we can find the first WW article of the month. We need to make sure its a super good article to show how good of an idea WW is. Any suggestions?
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 17:08, 13 February 2016 (UTC)
How about Snap! (Programming Language) or BeetleBlocks?
-unsigned comment by Mitopolis (talk | contribs)

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────I think BeetleBlocks should be the article, because it was mentioned in a SVU and possibly Scratchers will want to know about it:)
Fmtfmtfmt2 (talk | contribs) 19:27, 13 February 2016 (UTC)

I feel that Snap! needs a bit more cleaning up, and also needs to further explain the difference between BYOB and Snap!, before it could become the article of the month. I like the idea of BeetleBlocks becoming article of the month though, the article is fairly well written, and it's something that a lot of Scratchers would like to know about.

Hamish752 (talk | contribs) 21:19, 13 February 2016 (UTC)
I think an article about a feature of Scratch, the community or maybe a tutorial would be cool. I think we maybe shouldn't put an article about something non-Scratch in the first Wiki Wednesday, but that's just a feeling. What do you think? -

Hamish752 (talk | contribs) 21:58, 13 February 2016 (UTC)
Remix sounds like a good choice. I especially like the little section about the origin of the term. Meanwhile, Cloud Data is a little crowd specific. It feels like something for another WW.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 22:50, 13 February 2016 (UTC)

Hamish752 (talk | contribs) 23:37, 13 February 2016 (UTC)

How to redirect pages?

Just curious:)
Fmtfmtfmt2 (talk | contribs) 04:01, 9 February 2016 (UTC)

create a page with the title you want to redirect, and then the source as #REDIRECT (the page you want the redirect to go to)
KrIsMa Anamation2.gif KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 04:17, 9 February 2016 (UTC)
By the way, it's often easier to use the Edit Tools box at the bottom of the page (when you're editing a page). It wil automatically insert the #REDIRECT [[]], which is a lot easier than typing it out manually :)

My file isn't uploading

I'm trying to upload a picture of the old FAQ forums from Scratch 1.4 to add to the FAQ forum article, but it won't upload. I've tried doing it three times (two yesterday, one today) and it won't show up when I try to put it in the article, even though I pasted the name into the article and I'm positive the name is right. The upload file thing worked a week ago (I think) when I uploaded a picture for my user page, but it won't work now. Does anyone know why this won't work?
Pianogirl84 (talk | contribs) 21:34, 20 February 2016 (UTC)

Hmm. What happens when you try to upload the file? Do you get some sort of error? Because looking at your contributions, I don't see the image you're talking about (so obviously putting the file name in to an article won't work).
Hamish752 (talk | contribs) 23:40, 20 February 2016 (UTC)
No, it doesn't say anything. It's like I just refreshed the page, but I hit the "Upload" (or whatever it is) button. Then I looked in the Recently Uploaded (or whatever it is) section and it wasn't there. After that, I thought that either I did something wrong or it was a bug. :P Maybe I could try uploading another picture on my computer to put in my user/talk page and see if that works.
Pianogirl84 (talk | contribs) 01:22, 21 February 2016 (UTC)
I uploaded a picture of Bob the minion and it worked fine. I'm not sure why the other picture won't upload, but I'll try again.
EDIT: It uploaded now. Before, I wasn't checking "Ignore Warnings", but I did this time, so that might have been why it wouldn't upload.

Bot Development

I would like to make a bot for this:

  • Archive the CP when it gets over 30 discussions with done; leaving not done ones
  • Automatically remove S:CPND threads with done
  • Add "Is this a Flame War?" when two users are the only ones on a discussion and the use CAPITAL LETTERS places besides the first letters of words
  • Notify the currently most active EW/Admin when Category:Pages in Need of Deletion gets over 5 pages
  • Place a message here when it archives it saying, "This talk page was recently archived by a bot."
  • Any talk page-related suggestion anyone has

I think "MeowBot" would be a good name. I made a logo:
MeowBot.png The problem is, I have no idea how to make a bot. Can anyone please help? (I will give credit on the bot's user page.)
Popular GIF.gif Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 03:38, 21 February 2016 (UTC)

I think you should move this to Scratch Wiki:Bot Requests.

I actually want to literally write the bot on this thread.
Popular GIF.gif Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 03:51, 21 February 2016 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── My commentary:

  • Archiving: we sometimes keep certain threads, even those without "not done" from being archived, and protecting the archives would require giving admin privileges, which we don't want to do
  • Sometimes there is post-action discussion about done threads, and they shouldn't be removed anyway in case people want to look at them later
  • Flame wars are exceedingly rare on the Wiki, and they can happen in a lot of ways besides just using a lot of caps, and there are times I need to use all caps, for example if I were describing BYOB.
  • Deleting: We already check RC fairly frequently
  • The last one: see the first

jvvg (talk | contribs) 14:51, 21 February 2016 (UTC)

The archive message would be so that we knew to get any threads that we still wanted. The deleting thing would be just in case RC stuff got buried. I would have an "All-Caps Exception List" that would have things like BYOB, BeetleBlocks, and TurtleStitch. Also, if you have more suggestions, please make sure they are talk page-related.
Popular GIF.gif Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 15:52, 21 February 2016 (UTC)
Also, the archive message would mean "Please unarchive all wanted threads and protect the archive."

Where would a section for Applescript go?

Hey guys, I understand that Applescript is a niche language, and I'm wondering where, if anywhere, I should put it on the wiki. Python has an entire page - I think that Applescript should at least get a mention as it's one of the most useful scripting languages for beginners with Macs.

Hamish752 (talk | contribs) 06:17, 22 February 2016 (UTC)

We talked about that earlier, and had KrIsMa use VoxBot to mark them for deletion and give people time to say if any shouldn't be deleted. Maybe we should do that again.

Still a few outdated articles

There are still some articles in Category:Outdated Articles. This was done way back when 2.0 was released. They date back to when i was around! C'mon wikians, you've failed my expectations. How about it? Next time i stop in for an editing spree, i expect it to be empty.

All jesting aside, if anyone's looking for something to edit, here's a good place to stop. And Category:Article Stubs also could always use some work.

Categorizing block category lists under their category page

Did that title make any sense? No? Let me explain.

A page like Operators Blocks is not actually in Category:Operators Blocks, for reasons unexplained. I think that it would make sense to add it their, wit the format so that it shows up as the first, "subject", page. Any objections? (And volunteers? :))
