The [https://scratch-dach.info/wiki/Scratch-Wiki:Scratch_Club Scratch club] is a weekly meeting among a group of Scratchers which are contributing actively to the Scratch Wiki and to Scratch in general. The meetings are used to discuss important issues, most notable was the discussion if the transition of the english Wiki should take place. Currently, the weekly meetings are held in German, but we used to have an international Scratch club following after the German one. An alternative could be to make it alternating every week between German and English. As a start, who of the English and international Wiki administrators would be interested in it and able to join? And what would be better: weekly every Monday at 9:00 PM CET or bi-weekly at 8:00 PM? Once I get a tendency about the ''if'' and ''when'', I will bring it up at the next German Scratch club, perhaps already next Monday. <scratchsig>Frodewin</scratchsig> 20:54, 12 April 2018 (UTC)

Tinkercad has a new feature called Codeblocks that looks similar to Scratch. It has hat blocks and variables. I think this could have a page on this wiki.

On Wikipedia, there is an option for new Wikians to complete the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:The_Wikipedia_Adventure Wikipedia Adventure]. This teaches them skills and covers all the basics of using Wikipedia. I think it'd be a good idea to create a Scratch Wiki Adventure of our own to teach new Wikians the basics of the Scratch Wiki. This would include editing tips, rules, etiquette, etc. I'm wondering what people's thoughts are on this idea and/or if anyone would like to work with me on creating this.<scratchsig>54329</scratchsig> 17:08, 20 November 2019 (UTC)

Hello! I'm an admin in Japanese Scratch Wiki. In that wiki, we have some articles that English Wiki doesn't have. (Of course, some can't be, due to the strict [[S:NOSP]]!)

== Suggestion: [[Scratch Wiki:Featured Image Suggestions]] ==

It's as it says on the tin.

As part of this new revival of featured images (and leading on from [[#An Interval for Featured Images]], I propose that we create a page similar in concept to [[S:WWS]], where users leave new section saying which image they think deserve to be featured. This will clean up the CP (just slightly). At around the same time as Wiki Wednesday, the EWs/Bureaucrats review the suggestions and pick three images which will then to onto [[S:FI]]. If necessary, we could also edit the current Wiki Wednesday suggestion forum post to incorporate Featured Images too.

@Ken won't a homepage tasks page just get cluttered up? If they had to filter through edits and news items to find featured images, wouldn't it be harder for the admins? Also, having a dedicated project space is better because it's a) more obvious to Wiki Editors what the page is for, and seems less boring and gruelling than "homepage tasks", which sounds like just a big long list of stuff to do. And b) it would be easier for editors to suggest, because having a clearer Featured Image Suggestions would be more obvious to others what has already been suggested and what hasn't, et cetera. And c) having a dedicated page would make it so much easier to implement into the current WW forum post.{{User:Drunken Sailor/Signature}} 08:49, 5 August 2018 (UTC)

:We could have [[Scratch Wiki:Homepage Tasks]] and have there be a section for featured images, news things, and any other sections that may be needed. Then it wouldn't be as messy (if there were sections). Then we could make a shortcut called [[S:FEATUREDIMAGESUGGESTIONS]] (although that's a pretty long "shortcut") and have it redirect to [[Scratch Wiki:Homepage Tasks#Featured Image Suggestions]]. Or we could have [[Scratch Wiki:Featured Image Suggestions]] redirect to [[Scratch Wiki:Homepage Tasks#Featured Image Suggestions]]. {{e|:)}}
{{User:Bigpuppy/Real Signature}} 15:32, 5 August 2018 (UTC)

Hi everyone! I wanted to put a little feeler out there to see who was interested in participating/creating content for a possible Scratch Wiki YT Channel. We would publish wiki-like content within YT's video format. We could then link to this content from within the Wiki. You could for example create a Scratch tutorial, run-through a certain block or feature, or discuss a recent community venture you participated in. If y'all are interested in seeing this idea come to fruition, please comment to express your interest and volunteer yourself for content creation. Thanks! <scratchsig>Makethebrainhappy</scratchsig> 14:51, 27 April 2020 (UTC)

My suggestion is above {{-}} that's pretty much it. When you click on your username, you would see your username, "Talk," "Preferences," "Watchlist," "Contributions," "Log out," and "Sandbox" thrown somewhere in there. "Sandbox" would direct you to your personal sandbox, not the public sandbox. If the user hasn't created their sandbox, it would direct them to the page to create it.
{{User:Bigpuppy/Real Signature}} 16:59, 16 May 2020 (UTC)

+
:::Wikipedia has this, but this is actually harder to implement than you might think - the skin does not hardcode the user dropdown links, they are generated by MediaWiki itself. Adding the sandbox link would require a hook somewhere in LocalSettings.php and that might mess up some rhythms. There could be a link in the For Editors box, though! '''How to Compliment'''
+
== Tell users on Wiki Wednesday topics not to spam in replies ==

We have a whole wiki page on it! {{e|:D}} You can find it here: [[Scratch Wiki:Compliment Tuesday|Compliment Tuesday]]
+
When Wiki Wednesdays are mentioned on the Scratch News on the homepage, some users' replies contain spam such as blockspam.

+
I suggest that at the end of each Wiki Wednesday initial post, it should say that when replying, users should not spam. It could also give the definition of what is considered spam (such as offtopic blocks, gibberish, emoji testing, etc.), so users will less likely be confused about what spam is (other than the food product of the same name), that spam could be reported, and that block testing and project advertisements go in the Forum blocks testing topic and the Show and Tell forum respectively. {{User:Jammum/Signature}} 09:23, 25 June 2020 (UTC)
+
:It's a good idea - and I agree with you, but I think that's not a exact solution manner. As an example, lots of announcements and sticky topics (Wiki Forum Community Portal) are getting blockspam; some people, like me, TenType, SausageMcSausage or ST, warn them, but I see a new spam everyday when I check Wiki Forum Community Portal. Also, nobody don't write aggressive posts for warn users; for example, don't write "DON'T MAKE BLOCKSPAM OR SOMEBODY MAY WARN YOU(ME OR ANYBODY ELSE)". I think WW could include a link [[topic:387618|to here.]]{{User:Ahmetlii/sig}} 11:14, 25 June 2020 (UTC)

Ken and I have agreed that there is a lot of potential in creating tutorials in other programming languages which compare the syntax of that language to Scratch. We are roughly aiming for ten tutorials per language at the start of this tutorial. The pages could possibly receive a bar at the end of the front page (i.e. a try this out bar). We were thinking of having Python (3), C++, C#, C, Ruby, Java, PHP, JavaScript and we are looking for more suggestions. The suggested page hierarchy is (Programming Language)/(Tutorial Name) <scratchsig>Makethebrainhappy</scratchsig> 15:16, 24 August 2018 (UTC)

Hi folks! On the topic of reviving [[S:CPND]], I have another suggestion. My previous suggestion (collapsing discussions) got implemented, but it is a very minor change. As someone who usually updates the featured images, I was thinking about a discussion that I personally would like people to participate in, [[Scratch Wiki talk:Community Portal/Not Done#Suggestion: Scratch Wiki:Featured Image Suggestions]]. That specific discussion has been going on since August 2018 and it hasn't yet come to a conclusion.

== I forgot to mention: We have syntax highlighting now! ==
+
I think I've come up with something that may help solve the Not Done problem. Well, I didn't exactly come up with it, because I got the idea from Wikipedia's [[Wikipedia:WP:Feedback request service|Feedback request service]]. As I understand it, with Wikipedia's Feedback request service, when a discussion needs an outside editor to provide comment, a bot comments on the talk page of someone who has added their name to the list. I'd like to make it clear: '''my suggestion would not require a bot.''' Wikipedia needs stuff like that because it's giant.

I installed [[:mw:Extension:SyntaxHighlight|SyntaxHighlight]] a few days ago, and I forgot to tell you about it. This will come in handy for the [[Language Tutorials]].
+
Basically, when a discussion is going stale or needs a few more editors to provide feedback, a proactive editor can comment the Discussion Invitation template (currently at [[User:Bigpuppy/Discussion Invitation System/Template]]) on a few user talk pages of people who have signed up to be invited to discussions.

;Usage
+
Here are some examples of when this would be useful:

<syntaxhighlight lang="python3">import random
+
* For asking editors to participate in a [[S:CP]] or [[S:CPND]] discussion that has gone inactive or that has a deadline
print(random.randint(1, 5))</syntaxhighlight>

+
* For asking editors their opinion on a discussion on the talk page of an article that only a few people are participating in
yields

<syntaxhighlight lang="python3">import random

print(random.randint(1, 5))</syntaxhighlight>

and

Hello, <syntaxhighlight lang="javascript" inline>"world"</syntaxhighlight>!

yields

Hello, <syntaxhighlight lang="javascript" inline>"world"</syntaxhighlight>!
+
I think this will help with more than reviving [[S:CPND]], though {{-}} it will help on ''any'' discussion that isn't getting the attention it deserves.

If the <pre> tag is being used for code, replace it with <syntaxhighlight>. Replace <code> tags with inline syntaxhighlight tags.
+
I've decided to start this program up in my userspace, though if people like it maybe it can be moved to project space (the Scratch Wiki namespace). The list of people who have signed up is currently at [[User:Bigpuppy/Discussion Invitation System/List]] (as of writing, only me). ::It could be a good idea, but I'm not sure that it's really matter. As you said before, Wikipedia is a big place and a lot of discussion creators in [[S:CPND]] is inactive/quitted Scratch. Also, I think a lot of the discussions are not necessary. For example, are you think "Secret Compliments" important today? Also, asqwde has been inactive since 8 months.
+
::I'm supporting main idea, also it can be helpful for usual stuffs, but also nobody cannot use it for old Not Done topics. Additionally, I suggest another idea; Scratch Wiki could have multiple portals. For example; Scratch Modifications portal, Extensions portal, etc. Maybe not for now, but it could be helpful when discussions are too much.{{User:Ahmetlii/sig}} 20:03, 28 June 2020 (UTC)
+
:::Well, I don't think that it matters that some people in [[S:CPND]] are inactive; that doesn't mean their discussions aren't relevant anymore. As for the discussions that you don't think are relevant anymore, like "Secret Compliments," you should discuss that in the appropriate section at [[S:CPND]] and make sure people agree with you. I would like to add my name to the list, however one quick thing: why do we link to our Scratch profiles and not our Wiki profiles, or perhaps our Wiki talk page? Surely linking to our userpage would make a lot more sense, unless there is a specific reasoning for not doing this that I am not understanding.

:As to your question, there are likely not going to be any new bureaucrats, as EWs do their current jobs well and bureaucrats mainly exist to transfer privileges, block users, and anything else unique to the usergroup that you can find in [[Special:ListGroupRights]].

== Changing minor edit box to major edit ==

All those times when you forget to click the minor edit box... Most of the edits on the wiki are major edits. So why not have the minor edit box already ticked and if it is a major edit untick it, or change the minor edit box to a major edit box. If you look at RC most nearly all edits are minor so that is why i am suggesting this change {{User:Asqwde/sig}} 12:59, 8 September 2018 (UTC)

:Ahem! There is a user preference in [[Special:Preferences]] that will do exactly that - check the minor edit box by default. I don't think everyone should be making minor edits by default (especially newer users - on Wikipedia anonymous users can't even make minor edits at all!). If you think your own edits will be minor by default, set your [[Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing|preferences]] that way (check the "Mark minor edits by default" box).{{User:Kenny2scratch/sig}} 13:40, 8 September 2018 (UTC)

Full protection prevents editing by everyone except admins and EWs. Fully protected media files cannot be overwritten by new uploads.

Semi-protection prevents editing by New Wikans

Creation protection prevents a page (normally a previously deleted one) from being recreated.

Move protection protects the page solely from moving (renaming).

Upload protection prevents new versions of a file from being uploaded except by admins and EWs, but it does not prevent editing the file's description page.

Pending-changes protection means edits by unregistered and new contributors are not visible to readers until the edits are approved by an admin or EW.

Extended confirmed protection, also known as 30/500 protection prevents editing by users without three months and 500 edits on the English Wiki.

What do you think?

<scratchsig>Whatsfordinner77</scratchsig> 04:23, 15 September 2018 (UTC)

:Correct me if I'm wrong, but we can already protect pages. I'm pretty sure that since our wiki is hosted by MediaWiki ''(?)'' we either can already do it or can but we're not using that features. I'd ask an admin or EW for more help on this one. {{User:Redglitter/Signature}} 07:12, 15 September 2018 (UTC)

::This wiki indeed uses MediaWiki (we're not hosted by Wikimedia, but we use their software), so we already have full, semi, creation, move, and upload protection (though with different implications), and we don't intend to add pending-changes protection or extended confirmed protection. {{done}}{{User:Kenny2scratch/sig}} 07:34, 15 September 2018 (UTC)

:::For newer wikians, we'll need to tell them where and where not you can edit. <scratchsig>Whatsfordinner77</scratchsig> 02:07, 16 September 2018 (UTC)

::::::Then too bad, they obviously have never encountered protection before so we'll just have to explain it to them. == Split the Paint Article ==

I was browsing the wiki and noticed that the Paint editor article ([[Paint Editor|here]]) is '''really''' long and could possibly be split up into three different articles: History of the paint editor, 2.0 Bitmap Paint editor, and 2.0 Vector Paint Editor. <scratchsig>Jakel181</scratchsig> 20:55, 18 September 2018 (UTC)

:It is kinda long, but so is the CP, and do we split this? I realize it's not exactly the same thing, but it's not long enough to truly need splitting.{{User:Kenny2scratch/sig}} 07:03, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

::in Japanese wiki, we ''did'' split it. At that time, "Types of Graphics", "Bitmap Editor", "Vector Editor", "Bitmap and Vector Comparison", "Paint Editor Conversion", "Interaction With Other Programs", "Example Uses", and "Alternatives" section is kept. Others are moved to version subpages, such as [[Paint Editor (2.0)]]. Guess what will happen next January here, without the change.

::By the way, block workaround page is enough big to split, too, I think. It will be good for performance issues. {{User:Apple502j/siggy}} 08:24, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

I was just looking through [[Special:Categories]] and the eigtheenth one that shows up is Category:BYOB Images. Back in August, CrazyBoy826 moved it to Category:Snap! Images. However, there are still pages categorised undder this category. The edit summary included: {{quote|The categorized pages will be fixed later}}

== A question no one thought of before ==

I was looking around the Wiki when suddenly I came up with a problem: what if a user coincidently shares the name of a bot (but not connected to it) and decides to come on the Wiki? This is a very unlikely situation, but if it happened, the whole wiki would be scrambling for ways to fix the problem. What should we do to fix this problem, if the need ever arises? {{User:CrazyBoy826/sig}} 17:38, 21 September 2018 (UTC)

== Userpages ==

Recently, I've seen a few newer wikians without userpages. I know that generally when a new account is created, a userpage is created with it. I don't know how to phrase this very well, but should I make a list of the users who don't have userpages, make them myself, or just leave it so they can create their own? Examples:

Biran4454,

HR18K,

Cris524.

{{User:Redglitter/Signature}} 16:23, 22 September 2018 (UTC)

:User pages are no longer created when a new account is created{{User:Asqwde/sig}} 19:21, 22 September 2018 (UTC)

::They have to create them themselves as I think it is a userspace violation. <scratchsig>Jakel181</scratchsig> 19:23, 22 September 2018 (UTC)

:::I would think so. <scratchsig>Purplewolves</scratchsig> 23:41, 22 September 2018 (UTC)

::::Userpages being created automatically was a bug, not a feature. (Well, the extension treats it as a feature but since we don't use the "biography" section it's a bug.) After the transfer, with jvvg's new version of CA, we could finally turn off automatic userpage creation. Also for some people their userpages were created by Krett12 and his "NoRed" movement, but that was stopped quickly.

::::TL, DR: when a new account is created, it's not supposed to have a userpage. It's up to the user to visit their own userpage and find that it's not created. {{done}}{{User:Kenny2scratch/sig}} 00:51, 23 September 2018 (UTC)

==Category Suggestion==

Hello! I would like to suggest to add the category [[:Category:Uncategorized]]. Why you may ask? Well even though Wiki Monitor reminds you to categorize pages sometimes you forget to add it. A bot (The one I am suggesting [[User:Jakel181/Sandbox/3#SemicoIon|here]])(Or WM) could add the [[:Category:Uncategorized]] category and wiki editors can easily find what pages need to be categorized. ::::::New users on Wikipedia can sometimes have literally ''no'' experience with the site, so they need a more experienced user to help them along; we have a much more strenuous account request process that ensures that new users already know some things about this wiki; therefore, mentoring is essentially unnecessary on this site, and if it is necessary usually one of the admins ends up watching specific users for a while.{{User:Kenny2scratch/sig}} 06:15, 1 October 2018 (UTC)

=== Why there was an IP ban ===

No, it wasn't a MediaWiki ban. Because the page title had a website domain in it, and I attempted to view it, I apparently triggered some sort of anti-commercial spam mechanism that caused me to be IP banned. The ban just got lifted (which is why I can talk to you now), but I've censored the page title for its misdeeds.

To be safe, in the future do not put other websites in page titles.{{User:Kenny2scratch/sig}} 14:27, 8 October 2018 (UTC)

::I don't need to censor those revisions, because anybody going into that history is looking for the link anyway. I only removed it so that random not-logged-in users wouldn't see it immediately while looking at the current CP.{{User:Kenny2scratch/sig}} 09:52, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

== We can now use images from other wikis, on other wikis! ==

You can now include images from any wiki, on any wiki! This means if a file exists on one wiki it can be included on any other. There's no special syntax to include cross-wiki images, it's just a normal file link. As an example, scroll to the bottom of [[User:Kenny2scratch/Sandbox|my sandbox]]; The QR code there is actually a file on the Japanese wiki: [[:ja:ファイル:ウェブサイトのQRコード.png]]! Note that the "File:" part has to be in the correct language for your wiki.

== Add Siggy Warner to [[MediaWiki:Common.js]] ==

So for those who don't know what [[User:Kenny2scratch/Project Guides/Siggy Warner|Siggy Warner]] is, it's basically a JavaScript thing that pops up a confirmation box when you forget to sign, as well as adding a notice to previews when you don't sign. You can still deliberately omit the signature by either checking the "minor edit" box or typing "CONFIRM" when prompted.

Since forgetting to sign your post is one of the most common mistakes, I propose that instead of people opting into using my siggy warner, we add it to [[MediaWiki:Common.js]] as something that is loaded for all users. I think my siggy warner has reached a development status where it's ready to be included for everyone.

Potentially there could be a way to opt out of it, too - maybe by loading a user JS file that counteracts the effects of Siggy Warner.

What do you think about adding Siggy Warner to common.js?{{User:Kenny2scratch/sig}} 13:42, 10 October 2018 (UTC)

:::::Plenty of things that the Wiki itself relies on started off as user-generated things. This would be no exception. As apple rightfully points out, SWS2 and the Report extension are technically user-generated, as are WikiMonitor, TemplatesFTW, and other major parts. The only difference is that the "major" parts have been approved by the community to be a part of the Wiki itself and no longer counted as user-generated. By posting this, I am requesting that the community decide whether this should be moved into the main codebase and no longer simply a user-created script.{{User:Kenny2scratch/sig}} 13:50, 18 October 2018 (UTC)

::(this indentation indicates a reply to @D_S) jvvg also noticed that I'm slowly integrating more WM functions into the core. He's fine with it, though, since it would be less for him to maintain. Actually, WM doesn't need to check file categories anymore, either - an abuse filter prevents file uploads without categories. But WM isn't anywhere near out of a job yet - it has curator updating and rapid edit detection, neither of which we can do regularly.

These don't work. Seriously, there Scratch. I can understand Commons and WM being blocked, but why is Scratch CDN not working. Hello! I haven't been here in a while, and it's nice to be back. :) I just clicked "Random Page" and it brought me to the "Projects Loved By Scratcher's I'm Following" page. I've noticed by looking in [https://scratch.mit.edu/studios/5448215/ this studio] that most people don't like that row to be on the front page. Do you think I should add a section about the controversy?

<scratchsig>Purple_Ember</scratchsig> 21:47, 25 October 2018 (UTC)

:I don't see much controversy, and the only reason why it's currently being talked about is because of the current question of the week. <scratchsig>Jakel181</scratchsig> 22:17, 25 October 2018 (UTC)

== H: shortcuts for Help pages ==

I am suggesting that shortcuts for Help: pages to have shortcuts under the H: prefix.

An example would be H:BLOCK, which is meant to redirect to [[Help:Blocking users]]. <scratchsig>Jammum</scratchsig> 17:00, 26 October 2018 (UTC)

:I think short cut should say as "S:" as S stands for shortcut, If we use H: for a shout cut on help pages then we can use T for talk U for user, a letter for all the namespaces, and at that point there would be 15+ Different trypes of shortcuts to use and it would be confusing and hard to keep track. <scratchsig>Jakel181</scratchsig> 17:41, 26 October 2018 (UTC)

::You get this idea from Wikipedia, I presume? We don't have enough need for shortcuts to help pages to separate help shortcuts from project shortcuts, I believe. If we had many more help pages, with much more interest in them, then maybe we might consider adding help shortcuts.{{User:Kenny2scratch/sig}} 03:06, 28 October 2018 (UTC)

::: Firstly, I didn't get the idea from Wikipedia. Secondly, I think T: shortcuts and U shortcuts might be a bit spammy and unnecessary. Thirdly, I think S: does not stand for shortcut, I think it stands for the "Scratch Wiki:" namespace, as there is B: shortcuts for bots. <scratchsig>Jammum</scratchsig> 16:55, 28 October 2018 (UTC)

::::It is indeed true that S: stands for "Scratch Wiki", but B: doesn't stand for any namespace, does it? Also, I think you missed jakel181's point: if we were to have another shortcut prefix for a specific namespace, that would open up the possibility of more prefixes for even more namespaces, causing clutter. Anyway, help pages are not referred to frequently enough for a special prefix to be necessary - if you need to create a help shortcut, use a plain S: shortcut.{{User:Kenny2scratch/sig}} 02:10, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

Hi I created a reply template ([[User:Jakel181/Templates/@|Here]]) and I am wondering would it be something that you would use? If so would it be ok to move it to the template mainspace? Also if someone used it to reply to you, would you be ok with being pinged on your talk about that? <scratchsig>Jakel181</scratchsig> 12:44, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

:To clarify, since the OP isn't very clear: What is the community opinion on being messaged on your talk page, notified with a banner, or otherwise made aware of being mentioned with a template on some talk page? I.e. if someone were to
<nowiki>{{@|Kenny2scratch}}</nowiki>
I would get a talk page message, or a banner, or something else telling me that I have been pinged on a talk page. == Something about the vector skin ==

When I was viewing kenny2scratch's userpage in the vector skin, I clicked on a link, where it went back to the normal skin. To fix this, I recommend that links when viewing in the vector skin to have ?useskin=vector at the end. <scratchsig>Jammum</scratchsig> 16:55, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

:That is because when you click on a vector link, the page and only the page you clicked on will be vector. If your default is the sw skin. So if you click on a link that is normal (No specified skin) even if you are viewing it in vector but your delfault is the sw skin then you will see the sw skin when you click on the link. <scratchsig>Jakel181</scratchsig> 20:29, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

::I think I understand you right... you mean that links to pages when viewing in a skin other than your set skin should have
?useskin=skin
? I.e. if you're viewing in another skin, links should not take you back to your set skin?

::Good idea. Now is it worth the effort?

::Changing links on the server-side is likely the most elegant solution, but also the most difficult.

::Changing links with MW JS is hackier, but easier. Thing is, it also eats up processing power, especially when there are a lot of links. It's also difficult to discern what links are internal and what links aren't.

::If you want to preview in a certain skin, though, you can use my [[User:Kenny2scratch/useskin.js|useskin.js file]] (add the line <syntaxhighlight lang="javascript" inline>mw.loader.load('https://en.scratch-wiki.info/w/index.php?action=raw&ctype=text/javascript&title=User:Kenny2scratch/useskin.js');</syntaxhighlight> to [[Special:MyPage/common.js|your common.js file]]) which adds a dropdown that lets you choose what skin to preview in.{{User:Kenny2scratch/sig}} 03:30, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

== The server transfer: what it is and why the last try failed ==

So I want to clear up several things... Sorry I didn't bring this up before. (For the sake of making grammar work, I will speak in future tense here.)

=== What it is ===

There is another server transfer upcoming. (For those wondering what I mean by "another", see [[Scratch Wiki#Server Transfer]].) The purpose of this transfer is as follows:

* To move the Wikis onto their own dedicated machines

* To give the admins more freedom and power on the servers

* To release us from the constraints and worries of being on someone else's company's server

For those who don't know:

* {{user|MartinWollenweber}} is the person who financially supports the Wikis. Currently, the Wikis live in a folder on his company's server.

* To prevent us from doing any potential harm, he only allows we admins to access the servers via FTP, which does not let us do any advanced configuration.

** I am an exception to this. I currently have command-line access on his company servers for the sake of preparing for the transfer.

=== Why it failed ===

I attempted to perform this transfer at 10:00AM (UTC) last Friday. However, the attempt ended up failing. I was presented with MySQL error 2013 (search it up for more info) when dumping the wiki databases to transfer to the new servers. There are two possible causes of this error:

* The database is corrupted (doesn't seem to be the case)

* The database is too large, and MySQL times out when reading from it (very likely)

=== When the next one is ===

We're not really sure on this one. We're still trying to arrange a time. But do be warned that while the transfer is ongoing, the Wikis will be set to "read-only" mode. This means nobody can make any database changes.

I would like to create a template for when a page needs its name to be changed.

:Thanks for suggesting this idea. What would be the use of the template though? Why can’t you just move the page yourself? If it is move protected then that means the title is suitable, if you disagree you can bring it up on the CP. I don’t see the use for this. {{not done|No support!}} {{User:Asqwde/sig}} 19:48, 9 November 2018 (UTC)

Should we make a new page for mall simulators? Mall simulators are sort of big with the biggest mall simulator (Palace of Points) having more than 1400 members. Should we create a page for it? <scratchsig>Sti_scratch</scratchsig> 04:55, 21 November 2018 (UTC)

+
:Here's two images: [[:File:Transparent_Stamps.png|1]] and [[:File:Gobo_Keychain.jpg|2]]. I don't know if these have been used in the past or not. Maybe we should start keeping a list. Is there any rule against reusing images? <scratchsig>Groko13</scratchsig> 03:37, 1 July 2020 (UTC)
::Mall simulators, let me explain, are studios where people can register and make projects and add them to the studio. These projects are shops, where people (that are registered in a mall simulator the shop is added in) can buy from. Mall simulators invent their own currency, not tradeable for real money, that is used within the mall simulator itself. So, I don't really think it would fit there since it's technically not a project. <scratchsig>Sti_scratch</scratchsig> 08:54, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
+
::If images have the {{t|featured}} template on them, they have been used before. That said, there may have been some times where we forgot to add that template.
:::That's a new kind of [[shop]]. Actually, there is no article to write about it, I think. {{User:Apple502j/siggy}} 12:56, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
+
::As for whether there's a rule against re-using images, I'm not sure, though I'm guessing the {{t|featured}} template doesn't support such a case currently.
{{User:Bigpuppy/Real Signature}} 17:06, 1 July 2020 (UTC)
::::Yeah, it means that we have to create two pages. for the shops and the sim itself. <scratchsig>Sti_scratch</scratchsig> 03:34, 25 November 2018 (UTC)
+
:::Okay, thanks! Before I thought that the template was only for WW articles. <scratchsig>Groko13</scratchsig> 18:03, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

== Compliment Tuesday! November 27{{th}}, 2018 ==
+
== Constructiveness in Community Portal - An Idea ==

1:Welcome to the 16{{th}} Compliment Tuesday! November 27{{th}}, 2018.
+
Hello there!
2:WOW! Look at all these compilments. This is truly amazing!

'''What is Compliment Tuesday?'''
+
In case you didn't know, I'm a Forum Helper (https://scratch.mit.edu/studios/3688309/) on Scratch, which means I generally help out on the the Scratch discussion forums. One day, I headed over to the Community Portal and it seemed like a sort of "discussion forums" within the Scratch Wiki, and I understand that the concept is different, but for me it personally seemed that way.

Compliment Tuesday is a way of showing appreciation to other Wikians. Feel free to congratulate someone for finishing a large page, or even just give minor thanks for a minor edit. Just remember to keep everything positive! {{e|:)}}
+
Anyways, I mostly help around a lot on the Suggestions forum, which, yet again, redirects to the Community Portal since there are a lot of suggestions for the Scratch Wiki here. One difference is though, that the Scratch Team and some Scratchers (like me) enforce the rule of "constructiveness" while making posts, and I'm pretty sure most of you know what that means but I'll just clarify:

'''How to Compliment'''
+
* It means that one does not simply post "Support!", "Good idea!", or "+1!" and explain why they like the suggestion, that they provoke discussion, and look for possible issues instead of continuosly leaning on one side, like "I love this suggestion" or "I hate this suggestion"

We have a whole wiki page on it! {{e|:D}} You can find it here: [[Scratch Wiki:Compliment Tuesday|Compliment Tuesday]]
+
* It means that one does not simply add one sentence to act as if their post is constructive. For example, "Support, because this might be useful for many Wikians!" seems constructive but it isn't really constructive, because they're not stating how it would be useful for many Wikians or why it would be.

+
Now, I've been looking around in the CP, and I've been seeing a couple of responses just saying "+1!" or merely "Support!" without provoking any further discussion and merely showing your satisfaction. So I thought, maybe, we could enforce the constructive rule on the CP as well. Especially because the ideas here much more mature and complex, and not like Scratch where it's just new blocks or random new features.

'''Compliments'''
+
I do agree that many people are already following this rule, but maybe just enforce it more? I do think it'll be incredibly helpful for the type of suggestions being given here.

The Compliments are *drum roll please*
+
wow... that's... long
+
<scratchsig>Nambaseking01</scratchsig> 09:31, 4 July 2020 (UTC)
+
:While I understand what you're saying, I don't think it would be necessary to enforce constructiveness here. The discussion forums and Community Portal are two fundamentally different things. The Scratch Team has an extremely large userbase. Thus, there are many possible people contributing to discussions, and also many people that decisions will affect. It makes sense for there to be an expectation that people are constructive. However, as of writing, there are 72 [[Special:ActiveUsers|active users]] on the Scratch Wiki. This is much smaller than the userbase on Scratch. And yes, you might argue that our "userbase" is not just our editors but also our readers; yes, but our editors are the ones who are supposed to make the decisions here.

+
:Anyway, on the topic of having fewer active users on the wiki, it helps to see if someone ''supports'' your idea. And it matters, too. If multiple people like your idea, it probably has a better chance of being successful here. This is in stark contrast to the Suggestions Forum, where that is simply not true. This is why simply saying "support" or "no support" on that forum is not helpful, nor constructive.

{| class="wikitable" width="100%"
+
:In summary, yes, I think it would be ''helpful'' for people to provide a reason that they like or dislike an idea (perhaps we could recommend it), but I don't think it's necessary to ''enforce'' it. I don't think that it's fair to compare the convention ''here'' to the convention ''on the Suggestions Forum,'' because the CP is fundamentally different from the Suggestions Forum and the discussion forums in general. That said, if someone ''dislikes'' an idea, I think it is more necessary to provide reasoning than if they like it, as they are disagreeing with the reasoning provided by the OP, and thus need to provide their own reasoning.

When custom welcome messages on new Scratch Wikians' talk pages are not transcluded from a templat (when the entire contents, including the formatting is copied and pasted onto the talk page), it could lengthen the talk page.
Ok, so my signature is acting weird, whenever I put <nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>, This is what happens:

{{User:12944qwerty/Sig}}

I suggest that there should be a rule (unless one already exists) requiring all custom welcome messages (this excludes the default Scratch Wiki welcome message) to be transcluded as a template (from the creator's userspace, obviously). {{User:Jammum/Signature}} 16:04, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

First, sorry for not appearing on this Wiki! I'm kinda busy on jawiki and other stuff. Anyway it's the 106th archive time!
{{not done}}
If we look on the top left, we see the boxes, ''Navigation, For Editors, Tools''. I was thinking of making it fixed on every page, so when we scroll, it stays in position to screen. Any support?
{{User:12944qwerty/Sig}} 14:48, 28 November 2018 (UTC)
:'''Edit:''' This would be helpful in especially long pages like this one. and template for 'not done'
{{User:12944qwerty/Sig}} 03:12, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

::I made a css script you can add to you common.js file, that does just that! Hover over the sidebar and scroll to see the parts that go off screen, and if you scroll while not hovering over the sidebar then it will stay there! I had to move the side bar to the far left though because it was blocking the "About" section on the footer. Here is the code:
mw.loader.load('/w/index.php?title=User:Jakel181/Code/FixedSidebar.css&action=raw&ctype=text/css');//Fixes the sidebar to the screen when you scroll. Credit To Jakel181 for the code

:::Thanks, but what I meant was for it to be built into Scratch Wiki.
{{User:12944qwerty/Sig}} 20:50, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

:::So, I just tried it but it doesn't work. {{e|:(}}
{{User:12944qwerty/Sig}} 20:56, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

::::It says in the main post to add it to your [[Special:MyPage/common.js|common.js]] file, not your common.css file. Also, some people prefer the sidebar the where it is right now.<scratchsig>Jakel181</scratchsig> 22:49, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

:::::Still doesn't work.....

:::::My computer is really laggy and won't scroll to the top smoothly. {{e|:(}}
{{User:12944qwerty/Sig}} 23:45, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

::::::Ah I see the problem now, bad on my part. Use this code instead:
mw.loader.load('/w/index.php?title=User:Jakel181/Code/FixedSidebar.css&action=raw&ctype=text/css', 'text/css' );//Fixes the sidebar to the screen when you scroll. Credit To Jakel181 for the code
<scratchsig>Jakel181</scratchsig> 00:02, 30 November 2018 (UTC)

::I too made a CSS file that I think is better than Jake's (Jake, yours has a few problems regarding minute height and width tweaking. Also you use too many hacks :P). Use it by adding <syntaxhighlight lang="js" inline>mw.loader.load('/w/index.php?title=User:Kenny2scratch/fixedsidebar.css&action=raw&ctype=text/css', 'text/css');</syntaxhighlight> to [[Special:MyPage/common.js|your common.js file]].{{User:Kenny2scratch/sig}} 04:19, 30 November 2018 (UTC)

:::Haha! Thanks your is 8 lines while mine is 13 :P In short Ken code > Jake code. :P<scratchsig>Jakel181</scratchsig> 12:27, 30 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi! I noticed that when you are logged in the wiki and search for a page that doesn't exist like [https://en.scratch-wiki.info/w/index.php?search=Goldfish&title=Special%3ASearch Goldfish], it says: "'''Create the page "[[Goldfish]]" on this wiki!'''" but when you are logged out all it says is "There were no results matching the query." So my suggestion is instead of saying "There were no results matching the query." when logged out it should say "'''Request the page "[https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/294197/ Goldfish]" on this wiki!'''" == Active Users ==

The [[Special:ActiveUsers|Active Users List]] shows people that are active from the last 30 days. The only flexibility is to hide bots and admins. I feel we could add a little more flexibility of seeing the active users from most active to least activeness instead of alphabetically. Thoughts?
{{User:12944qwerty/Templates/Sig}} 15:23, 10 December 2018 (UTC)

:[[Special:ActiveUsers]] is built into media wiki directly, I don't see any configuration settings or MediaWiki interface pages for it. (Not to say that there isn't I just haven't found any) So this most likely would have to be done with an extension which is kind of impractical for us. <scratchsig>Jakel181</scratchsig> 22:20, 10 December 2018 (UTC)

== Step-by-Step publishing ==

In the [[Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing|editing section in preferences]], there is a option for step-by-step publishing which adds the publish button on the top of the edit box. Is it possible to fix?
{{User:12944qwerty/Templates/Sig}} 15:33, 10 December 2018 (UTC)

:I had the same problem. It is because step by step publishing is a lab and still in development, so it is not recommended to be used. It is technically possible to fix, but not worth it for the scratch wiki. You can either turn it off or use wiki markup as a work around.<scratchsig>Jakel181</scratchsig> 19:37, 10 December 2018 (UTC)

== 3.0 Release: 2.0 "Archiving" ==

Hi everyone, just wanted to say - Scratch 3 gets released very soon, so that means that we need to make sure everything about 2.0 has been "archived" on the wiki. Are there any pages that need more info to do with 2.0? (e.g images?) Because after about a month, there won't be a chance to screenshot parts of the website etc.

EDIT: We'll also need to start a page on the development of Scratch 3.0 before the chance to screenshot parts of the beta is gone.

{{User:Redglitter/Signature}} 16:08, 10 December 2018 (UTC)

:I agree, we should have a 2.0 archive in some shape or form. Though we can still get most 2.0 editor images relatively easily because the offline editor is still available to be downloaded. <scratchsig>Jakel181</scratchsig> 22:33, 10 December 2018 (UTC)

:Well, [[Scratch Wiki:3.0 Articles]] will come into play upon release... I think I'll supervise the transfer of those articles to mainspace while other EWs help out in other areas. (The details will be worked out later.){{User:Kenny2scratch/sig}} 03:24, 11 December 2018 (UTC)

How to edit on the Scratch Wiki

We recommend that before you create your question, you read these tips to editing on the Scratch Wiki.

  • Sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) after your post.
  • To do various text formatting, follow the following rules, rather than using any other text-editing methods:
    • Make text bold with '''text'''.
    • Make text italics with ''text''.
    • Make text bold and italics with '''''text'''''.
    • Make a link to a page outside of this wiki with [http://www.example.com link text] or {{plain link|1=http://www.example.com|2=link text}} if you don't want the Link icon.png symbol to appear (remember http:// prefix).
    • Make a link to an article on this wiki with [[Page name]] or [[Page name|Link text]].
    • Make a link to a Wikipedia article with [[Wikipedia:Page name]] or [[Wikipedia:Page name|Link text]].
    • Indent a paragraph by putting a colon (:) before it.
    • For more, see the help page on formatting.
  • Put new text under old text.
  • Always remember to be polite and respectful, assume good faith, and be welcoming, while following the Scratch Community Guidelines.
  • When creating a new post, mark it as No Not done by putting {{not done}} at the top. Once the conversation has been resolved, replace it with {{done}} (producing Yes Done).

Tinkercad Codeblocks

Tinkercad has a new feature called Codeblocks that looks similar to Scratch. It has hat blocks and variables. I think this could have a page on this wiki.
LiamSapp123 (talk | contribs) 19:47, 27 September 2019 (UTC)

Does it have a specific connection to Scratch in particular though? We don't have a page on Blockly, even though it's a similar concept (and even though 3.0 has Blockly code in it).

Scratch program image

No Not done
The image showing the scratch program should be 3.0, not 2.0, right?
Mohie (talk | contribs)

Not necessarily, we use the 2.0 version for historical references. So, we should have to images for this. One for 3.0, and one for 2.0.
Also, could you link to what you're talking about, please? It would be so much easier for someone to know what you were talking about easily.
-unsigned comment by 12944qwerty (talk | contribs)
He meant the picture of the Scratch program shown in Scratch Wiki:Table of Contents needs to be updated to 3.0. Could an admin do this?
TenType (talk | contribs) 23:25, 11 November 2019 (UTC)
Okay... So is there going to be another section for 3.0, or is 2.0 going to be merged with 3.0?
And also, TenType is correct. I do mean the SW TOC.

Scratch Wiki Adventure

No Not done

On Wikipedia, there is an option for new Wikians to complete the Wikipedia Adventure. This teaches them skills and covers all the basics of using Wikipedia. I think it'd be a good idea to create a Scratch Wiki Adventure of our own to teach new Wikians the basics of the Scratch Wiki. This would include editing tips, rules, etiquette, etc. I'm wondering what people's thoughts are on this idea and/or if anyone would like to work with me on creating this.

I hope you're prepared to put in the amount of work involved, because The Wikipedia Adventure is really involved (I've done it once before) and a lot of stuff has to be created for it to work. I like the idea, but I don't know if anyone here has the follow-through to actually focus on a project like this that could take a week or more to make.
If you think you can commit yourself (and furthermore get others to commit themselves) you can make a Scratch Wiki Project of it. Good luck!

Woohoo; we got bureaucratic approval! I think we can do it (maybe not as well as the Wikipedia Adventure, but still good). I'll start thinkin' up some basic ideas to start us off. If anyone is interested in working with me on this, please let me know on my talk page. :)

Jammum Icon.png Jammum (💬 Talk - ✍️ My 2,170 Contribs - 🐱 Scratch) 06:41, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
No, the Wikipedia Adventure is really involved and more interactive.
TenType (talk | contribs) 06:44, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
Adding on, when I did it, it felt a lot more like a game/activity than a guidebook. It allows the user to actually collaborate, talk to people and create/edit a page all in a sandbox setting. It helped me learn the basics of Wikipedia far more than a guide could (probably because I was really interested in it and getting those shiny badges was nice).

Suggestion: Mention that the Privacy Policy and Disclaimers are in German

Currently, the links under the 'Legal' category do not are not mentioned that they are in German. I suggest that the footer mentions that the content under the Legal category are in German.

Without mentioning that, some people might be confused that they are in German, and not English. They also cannot be translated into English without it being inaccurate.
Jammum Icon.png Jammum (💬 Talk - ✍️ My 2,170 Contribs - 🐱 Scratch) 13:21, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

Why would they be German?
OurPrincess (talk | contribs) 16:35, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
The Wiki servers are located in Germany and therefore follow the rules/regulations of Germany.
Makethebrainhappy (talk | contribs) 00:33, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
Would you be amenable to using the external link marker on them instead? Putting "(German)" on a footer link seems unorthodox...
Kenny2scratch logo.jpg kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory
10:33, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
The servers are German because they are owned by Martin Wollenweber, who lives in Germany.
OurPrincess (talk | contribs) 11:55, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
Maybe the Privacy Policy and the Disclaimers can be individually labelled that they are in German, or is that still 'unorthodox'? They could have 'in German' put in brackets after them.
Jammum Icon.png Jammum (💬 Talk - ✍️ My 2,170 Contribs - 🐱 Scratch) 13:29, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
I think it's fine the way it is, but it should get translated for other wikis so we know what happens to our data.

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Did you read the OP? They can't be translated accurately.

Having a notice at the top of the actual pages saying something similar to what I say on my userpage (the "many other wikis link here" thing), ideally translated into everything, would also be fine for me - I'm only opposed to changing the footer.

Scratch Wiki YT Channel

Hi everyone! I wanted to put a little feeler out there to see who was interested in participating/creating content for a possible Scratch Wiki YT Channel. We would publish wiki-like content within YT's video format. We could then link to this content from within the Wiki. You could for example create a Scratch tutorial, run-through a certain block or feature, or discuss a recent community venture you participated in. If y'all are interested in seeing this idea come to fruition, please comment to express your interest and volunteer yourself for content creation. Thanks!
Makethebrainhappy (talk | contribs) 14:51, 27 April 2020 (UTC)

I think that this would compete with the Scratch Wiki Adventure though...

Well we would be able to produce varied content aside from Wiki Wednesday. People have also suggested tutorials for S:WELCOME to me privately. We'd be modeling it in some regards to Wikipedia's YT Channel.

I'm interested! But... What do you mean by "volunteer yourself for content creation"? Is there a specific page to apply?

I'm interested too — I'd like to help make a few videos. I already have a YouTube channel but I can't share it because of my real name and face reveal. I'm just ten years, but I don't think that will affect anything as I enjoy talking on-camera and a lot of people tell me I have a talent for vlogging / gaming (not to brag though). I also have a Scratch tutorial series, so I already have some experience with it.

Suggestion: Add a "sandbox" option in the user pull-down on the header

No Not done

My suggestion is above — that's pretty much it.

Sounds like a cool feature. +1!

I think it's a good idea, but I think we can create a disambiguation page rather than direct to the personal sandbox. However, +1!
Ahmetlii (talk | contribs) 18:14, 16 May 2020 (UTC)
Wikipedia has this, but this is actually harder to implement than you might think - the skin does not hardcode the user dropdown links, they are generated by MediaWiki itself. Adding the sandbox link would require a hook somewhere in LocalSettings.php and that might mess up some rhythms. There could be a link in the For Editors box, though! Special:MyPage/Sandbox is a handy link. What say y'all?

Tell users on Wiki Wednesday topics not to spam in replies

When Wiki Wednesdays are mentioned on the Scratch News on the homepage, some users' replies contain spam such as blockspam.

Jammum Icon.png Jammum (💬 Talk - ✍️ My 2,170 Contribs - 🐱 Scratch) 09:23, 25 June 2020 (UTC)

It's a good idea - and I agree with you, but I think that's not a exact solution manner. I think WW could include a link to here.

Discussion Invitation System

No Not done

Hi folks! On the topic of reviving S:CPND, I have another suggestion. My previous suggestion (collapsing discussions) got implemented, but it is a very minor change. As someone who usually updates the featured images, I was thinking about a discussion that I personally would like people to participate in, Scratch Wiki talk:Community Portal/Not Done#Suggestion: Scratch Wiki:Featured Image Suggestions. That specific discussion has been going on since August 2018 and it hasn't yet come to a conclusion.

I think I've come up with something that may help solve the Not Done problem. Well, I didn't exactly come up with it, because I got the idea from Wikipedia's Feedback request service. As I understand it, with Wikipedia's Feedback request service, when a discussion needs an outside editor to provide comment, a bot comments on the talk page of someone who has added their name to the list. I'd like to make it clear: my suggestion would not require a bot. Wikipedia needs stuff like that because it's giant.

Basically, when a discussion is going stale or needs a few more editors to provide feedback, a proactive editor can comment the Discussion Invitation template (currently at User:Bigpuppy/Discussion Invitation System/Template) on a few user talk pages of people who have signed up to be invited to discussions.

Here are some examples of when this would be useful:

  • For asking editors to participate in a S:CP or S:CPND discussion that has gone inactive or that has a deadline
  • For asking editors their opinion on a discussion on the talk page of an article that only a few people are participating in

I think this will help with more than reviving S:CPND, though — it will help on any discussion that isn't getting the attention it deserves.

I've decided to start this program up in my userspace, though if people like it maybe it can be moved to project space (the Scratch Wiki namespace). The list of people who have signed up is currently at User:Bigpuppy/Discussion Invitation System/List (as of writing, only me). If you'd like to sign up, please do!
Bigpuppy Logo.png bigpuppy talk | contribs 18:53, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

I think this is a great idea!
Groko13 (talk | contribs) 19:10, 28 June 2020 (UTC)
It could be a good idea, but I'm not sure that it's really matter. As you said before, Wikipedia is a big place and a lot of discussion creators in S:CPND is inactive/quitted Scratch. Also, I think a lot of the discussions are not necessary. For example, are you think "Secret Compliments" important today? Also, asqwde has been inactive since 8 months.
I'm supporting main idea, also it can be helpful for usual stuffs, but also nobody cannot use it for old Not Done topics. Additionally, I suggest another idea; Scratch Wiki could have multiple portals. For example; Scratch Modifications portal, Extensions portal, etc. Maybe not for now, but it could be helpful when discussions are too much.
Ahmetlii logo.gif ahmetlii Talk Contributions Directory
20:03, 28 June 2020 (UTC)
Well, I don't think that it matters that some people in S:CPND are inactive; that doesn't mean their discussions aren't relevant anymore. As for the discussions that you don't think are relevant anymore, like "Secret Compliments," you should discuss that in the appropriate section at S:CPND and make sure people agree with you. You could get people to add to the discussion on whether they are relevant anymore using the system I suggested ;)
Bigpuppy Logo.png bigpuppy talk | contribs 20:08, 28 June 2020 (UTC)
I just used the system on the talk pages of the two people (other than me) who signed up:
Keep in mind that in the future, people would not message everyone on the list (because hopefully lots of people sign up!), but rather message the number of people that they need.
Bigpuppy Logo.png bigpuppy talk | contribs 01:26, 29 June 2020 (UTC)
I'm happy to see people using the system already! :)
Bigpuppy Logo.png bigpuppy talk | contribs 19:09, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
Also, I added {{open userpage}} to all of the Discussion Invitation System pages except the template, so feel free to improve any of them!
Bigpuppy Logo.png bigpuppy talk | contribs 19:25, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────Oh yes, I remember when I first suggested that. I was thinking about it recently actually - what a coincidence!

I would like to add my name to the list, however one quick thing: why do we link to our Scratch profiles and not our Wiki profiles, or perhaps our Wiki talk page? Surely linking to our userpage would make a lot more sense, unless there is a specific reasoning for not doing this that I am not understanding.

In any case, I think this is a fantastic idea. Glad to see it's working already! Thanks for taking this on, bigpuppy. :)
border=3px Drunken Sailor [ Talk | Contribs | More... ] 15:34, 2 July 2020 (UTC)

Where do people link to their Scratch profiles? On the list page, we are using the {{user}} template, which adds a link to the user's userpage and talk page. :)
Bigpuppy Logo.png bigpuppy talk | contribs 16:29, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
Wait, nevermind. I saw {{users}} in the code, and mistook it to be the new [[users:]] interwiki, which points to their Scratch profile. Whoops!

If images have the {{featured}} template on them, they have been used before. That said, there may have been some times where we forgot to add that template.
As for whether there's a rule against re-using images, I'm not sure, though I'm guessing the {{featured}} template doesn't support such a case currently.

Constructiveness in Community Portal - An Idea

Hello there!

  • It means that one does not simply post "Support!", "Good idea!", or "+1!" and explain why they like the suggestion, that they provoke discussion, and look for possible issues instead of continuosly leaning on one side, like "I love this suggestion" or "I hate this suggestion"
  • It means that one does not simply add one sentence to act as if their post is constructive. For example, "Support, because this might be useful for many Wikians!" seems constructive but it isn't really constructive, because they're not stating how it would be useful for many Wikians or why it would be.

I do agree that many people are already following this rule, but maybe just enforce it more? I do think it'll be incredibly helpful for the type of suggestions being given here.

wow... that's... long

While I understand what you're saying, I don't think it would be necessary to enforce constructiveness here. The discussion forums and Community Portal are two fundamentally different things. The Scratch Team has an extremely large userbase. Thus, there are many possible people contributing to discussions, and also many people that decisions will affect. It makes sense for there to be an expectation that people are constructive. However, as of writing, there are 72 active users on the Scratch Wiki. This is much smaller than the userbase on Scratch. And yes, you might argue that our "userbase" is not just our editors but also our readers; yes, but our editors are the ones who are supposed to make the decisions here.
Anyway, on the topic of having fewer active users on the wiki, it helps to see if someone supports your idea. And it matters, too. If multiple people like your idea, it probably has a better chance of being successful here. This is in stark contrast to the Suggestions Forum, where that is simply not true. This is why simply saying "support" or "no support" on that forum is not helpful, nor constructive.
In summary, yes, I think it would be helpful for people to provide a reason that they like or dislike an idea (perhaps we could recommend it), but I don't think it's necessary to enforce it. I don't think that it's fair to compare the convention here to the convention on the Suggestions Forum, because the CP is fundamentally different from the Suggestions Forum and the discussion forums in general. That said, if someone dislikes an idea, I think it is more necessary to provide reasoning than if they like it, as they are disagreeing with the reasoning provided by the OP, and thus need to provide their own reasoning.
So, to end this off, I agree that we should recommend it, but I disagree that we should enforce it.

Good idea! I suppose that could work too.

Scratchblocks Plugin not Working

On any wiki page I go to that has the Scratchblock Plugin, all of the blocks end up half-rendered, except for the text. Are other people seeing this?

This does not happen to me - the bug might only happen to the device or computer you are using the Scratch Wiki on.

This might not be of much help but have you tried realoding the page or freeing space on your computer/device sometimes when the tablet I use is out of space/storage everything malnfuctions
Godslamb (talk | contribs) 15:09, 9 July 2020 (UTC)
What device/OS/browser are you using?
Bigpuppy Logo.png bigpuppy talk | contribs 15:37, 9 July 2020 (UTC)
If you are using a phone it is probably because the screen is too small so the wiki malfunctions. If you are on another device then I think it is because your storage is full, so in that case you need to free up space.

I'm using Brave Browser on a Macbook Pro, with about 70GB left on the hard drive. I have tried both reloading and clearing the cache, to no avail.
Ravenclaw900 (talk | contribs) 22:15, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
Hmm, could you try using a different browser, like Firefox or Chrome? That might be the issue. :)

Require custom welcome messages to be transcluded

When custom welcome messages on new Scratch Wikians' talk pages are not transcluded from a templat (when the entire contents, including the formatting is copied and pasted onto the talk page), it could lengthen the talk page.

I suggest that there should be a rule (unless one already exists) requiring all custom welcome messages (this excludes the default Scratch Wiki welcome message) to be transcluded as a template (from the creator's userspace, obviously).

#Standardized signatures Transcluded pages are loading slower, also the default welcome message is too big for transclusion.

Archive 106

First, sorry for not appearing on this Wiki! I'm kinda busy on jawiki and other stuff. Anyway it's the 106th archive time!

Things to archive:

Can these be archived as well?

Yay! 10milemoji.png Out of your "can these be archived as well" topics, here are the ones that I think can be archived:
If you disagree with any of those, please say so.
That leaves these ones that I'm not too sure about:

Bigpuppy Logo.png bigpuppy talk | contribs 18:29, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
I archived the finished and inactive discussions.
maybe I archived so fast

Ahmetlii, I think you archived some that shouldn't have been archived... such as: "Require custom welcome messages to be transcluded" (edit conflict with Ahmetlii)
Bigpuppy Logo.png bigpuppy talk | contribs 18:35, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
Also, I think the admins (like Ken) are supposed to do the actual archiving?
Bigpuppy Logo.png bigpuppy talk | contribs 18:36, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
oopsI came Jammum's topic to here again.also edit conflict

There are some others too; I'm currently looking through the archive.

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Should we do a bot for archiving? Yes, it's pretty Yes Done without a bot; but also I saw that I archived everything, nearly.

S:CPND

Yes Done

Can someone please help me find the problem at S:CPND? Everything is being collapsed by one of the topics... :/
Bigpuppy Logo.png bigpuppy talk | contribs 19:15, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

I'm not sure why {{collapse bottom}} is not working at the bottom of Scratch Wiki talk:Community Portal/Not Done#Embedding of Scratch Projects...
TenType (talk | contribs) 19:37, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
Looking in the page history, before this edit, everything seems normal. However, the problem is, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with that edit, and I don't remember it being like this since that edit. Sometimes I just really dislike wiki formatting. :/ Thanks for trying to help fix it.
Bigpuppy Logo.png bigpuppy talk | contribs 19:41, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
Very strange, is the signature messing the page up somehow?
TenType (talk | contribs) 19:44, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
I tried removing all instances of Ahmetlii's custom signature in my sandbox, and it kind of fixed the problem, but really just moved it to a different topic. :P
Bigpuppy Logo.png bigpuppy talk | contribs 19:51, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
To everyone — free to edit my sandbox to try to find out what the problem is. Rules against editing posts don't apply there, so please don't copy and paste from there into S:CPND. This is purely to identify the problem.
Bigpuppy Logo.png bigpuppy talk | contribs 19:53, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
So, something I did in User:Bigpuppy/Sandbox fixed the problem. I removed a lot of people's custom signatures. The problem was fixed when I removed this code, I think:
{{#ifeq:|nobr||
}}[[File:Eribetra%27s_Profile_Picture.gif|20px|link=User:Eribetra]]{{nbsp}}{{link style|User:Eribetra|color:black;font-weight:normal|text=Eribetra}}{{nbsp}}{{nbsp}}{{link style|User talk:Eribetra|color:black;font-weight:normal|text=Talk}}{{nbsp}}{{nbsp}}{{link style|Special:Contributions/Eribetra|color:black;font-weight:normal|text=Contribs}}{{nbsp}} 21:23, 3 January 2019 (UTC)
This is the code of Eribetra's custom signature — not sure why it wasn't transcluded.
The problem is, when I tried to remove just that code, it didn't fix the problem.
So I fixed the problem in my sandbox, now we just need to isolate what I did to fix it. :P
Bigpuppy Logo.png bigpuppy talk | contribs 20:15, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────Alright, I know for sure that there is something in User:Ahmetlii/sig that is causing trouble. Look at User:Bigpuppy/Sandbox 3, then look at its source code.
Bigpuppy Logo.png bigpuppy talk | contribs 20:43, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

Alright, I think I've fixed the issue!! 10milemoji.png
I think there were two things causing this:
  1. Something with the formatting of the "custom signatures" section. I don't know what, but if you read that discussion, Ken has tried to fix it as well.
  2. Something in Ahmetlii's custom signature.
I fixed the problem by:
  1. Moving the "custom signatures" section to its own subpage, Scratch Wiki talk:Community Portal/Not Done/custom signatures.
  2. Reverting Ahmetlii's custom signature to a previous version. I think it's okay that I edited userspace because the custom signature was adversely affecting other pages, though please correct me if I'm wrong about that.
