:::No, the point of each user having their own welcome template is for them to be specific to the user welcoming - a different message for each one. If they just wanted to add their name to a stock welcome they could reply to the {{t|welcome}} message added by default. However, 10 users posting personalized welcomes is a lot of different welcomes to read - which is why it needs limiting.
 +
:::Seems like 4-5 is the limit we've agreed on; for the sake of looseness, '''the limit is now 5 welcome messages at most on any new user's talk page''' (not including the {{t|welcome}} message; does not apply to users created before this decision).

== AF Link Proposal ==

For April Fools pages, could we convert regular links in the page to the April Fools one instead, if possible?

But we shouldn't go on a massive editing spree for this - only change the links if we stumble upon them or add new ones. <scratchsig>TenType</scratchsig> 16:17, 30 July 2019 (UTC)

:I think that depends on the person that creates the page, but I think that April Fools pages aren't that huge of a deal to change every link, even if stumbled upon. Also, most pages don't have an alternate April Fools page to begin with. <br/>{{User:Jedibrine/Sig}} 05:48, 31 July 2019 (UTC)

::Support.

::{{User:Smileycreations15/sig}} 12:04, 31 July 2019 (UTC)

:::@Jedibrine: Sorry, by "stumbling upon", I meant when we add/modify the contents of an AF page. I don't want too many edits of just converting links.

:::Also, this will make AF pages more lively and humorous in a way. I myself have been disappointed in the past clicking on a link on an AF page, but found out that it led to a regular article.

:::And even if there isn't an alternate AF page, so what? We could just add the regular link for now, and then when it gets created, we could change it. <scratchsig>TenType</scratchsig> 16:03, 31 July 2019 (UTC)

::::I thought that on April Fools Day, then if you clicked a link, it would lead to the April Fools version of that page if there is one...{{User:EIephant Lover/Signature}} 22:28, 31 July 2019 (UTC)

:::::No no, that's not what I meant. What I meant was when you click on a link that's on an AF page, it leads you to the regular page, and my proposal is that we should change those links (once again on AF pages) to lead to the AF version of the link, if possible. Even if this could be rendered useless on April 1{{th|1}}, it still would be more humorous for users who browse AF pages. <scratchsig>TenType</scratchsig> 00:48, 1 August 2019 (UTC)

{{outdent|:::::}}

I don't think this is a good idea. What benefit will this bring? This change would mean that on AF Day, every ''mainspace'' page would be linking to the AF subpage instead of linking to other real pages. Then any normal user would suddenly be taken to some cryptic page titled "Scratch Wiki:April Fools/Ignatious Q. Higgenbotham" and not know what they were looking at. Plus, the {{t|April Fools}} template (which is on every ''mainspace'' page with an AF version) shows a header saying "this is a joke, scroll to the bottom for the real article"; the {{t|AF}} template (which is on the ''AF versions'' of mainspace pages) does not. Linking to AF versions from mainspace would remove the ability for educators, New Scratchers, and other members of our audience to get some serious help that they just happened to need on AF Day.

That's my two cents.

<small>BTW, @TenType, there's a shortcut for {{t|th}} for 1, it's {{t|st}}. There are also {{t|nd}} and {{t|rd}} for convenience.</small>{{User:Kenny2scratch/sig}} 04:17, 1 August 2019 (UTC)

:I don't think everyone knows what I'm saying. Only <u>on</u> AF pages should we link to other AF pages; why would we link AF pages from mainspace? <scratchsig>TenType</scratchsig> 16:04, 1 August 2019 (UTC)

::Dude. AF pages get ''transcluded into mainspace on AF Day''. The links remain unchanged upon transclusion.{{User:Kenny2scratch/sig}} 16:09, 1 August 2019 (UTC)

:::Welp, yes, but this would also benefit users who browse AF pages when it's not AF day. <scratchsig>TenType</scratchsig> 17:51, 1 August 2019 (UTC)

::::I don't really know that many people that browse AF pages outside of AF day, and there are ways for people to access AF pages if they really need to. If people want to reach a page on AF day, all they will find are AF pages. <br/>{{User:Jedibrine/Sig}} 04:03, 2 August 2019 (UTC)

::::<!-- this indentation is intentional -->I've made a change to the {{t|April Fools}} template (the one that goes on mainspace) so that it shows a little icon in the top right that links to the AF version. That should make things easier for the minority that browses AF pages, which substitutes the only real benefit of this; therefore I shall consider this {{done}}.{{User:Kenny2scratch/sig}} 04:26, 3 August 2019 (UTC)

[[Help talk:Welcome/4]] is used by new Wikians to test out using talk pages. But, there is also a real discussion on the page named 'Blanking' (although before the actual discussion, there are a few talk page tests).

I suggest that all test discussions should be moved to its own talk page (that is a sub-page of the real talk page), which could be named something like 'Help talk:Welcome/4/Testing'. {{User:Jammum/Signature}} 07:28, 6 August 2019 (UTC)

: They really should! <scratchsig>God286</scratchsig> 06:31, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

::I disagree - besides posting on talk pages, New Wikians should also learn how to get to them. If they have to additionally navigate to a subpage, they might be misimpressioned that they have to do that with all talk pages. At the most maybe indicate at the top of the page that ''real'' discussions should go in a subpage.{{User:Kenny2scratch/sig}} 07:46, 1 September 2019 (UTC)

== Wiki Wednesday - Participate! ==

Hi everyone!

Those who have been following Wiki Wednesday closely might have noticed that we introduced a new section in July, "Participate!". Our goals are to

* increase community engagement with the Wiki Wednesday event

* reduce (the relative amount of) spam on the topic

* show people that they can use the Wiki to answer many questions

* get more people interested in joining the Wiki by inspiring them with interesting questions/ topics that need coverage

In July's participate we asked people to ask questions, try to answer them with the Wiki or otherwise answer if they can. We got some interesting questions:

> Answered by wiki

* Where is the remix tree?

* What is the Wiki?

* What is Wiki Wednesday?

* Who invented Scratch?

> Answered by community

* Troubleshooting on MacBook

* Changing the profile picture on a tablet

* How many studios can someone create?

* How to make a thumbnail (that is not visible once the Green Flag was clicked) for a project

> Unanswered

* When are Scratch Updates launched?

* Branding Tips

* Project ideas

* Wall detection platformer tutorial

* Make a bullet follow a player

* Full game tutorials

* How to draw in Scratch

* What did the ST expect people to do with studios?

* How to get hacked blocks

As you see some of the unanswered questions could have been answered using the Wiki - oh well, they were burried beneath spam I guess...

This month's Participate! is to give us feedback on last month's participate and Wiki Wednesday in general. It would be great if the Wiki Community could participate :) On the Wiki Wednesday post: https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/368257/ post your feedback! You can also make suggestions for future Participat! sections. Or say if you don't think Participate! is useful and try and develop another strategy. Thanks all!

-- <scratchsig>LiFaytheGoblin</scratchsig> 17:20, 28 August 2019 (UTC)

:{{cool|Very cool!}} Even though I didn't participate in last month's "Participate!", I will make sure to participate next time! (This sounds like a great idea btw!) {{e|:D}} <scratchsig>TenType</scratchsig> 01:44, 29 August 2019 (UTC)

I think we need to write in [[Scratch Statistics|this page]] that New Zealand is cut off massively, and can not really be seen. It's quite noticeable! <scratchsig>God286</scratchsig> 06:27, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

:Actually, this is a common thing done in corporate - New Zealand frequently doesn't constitute a large statistic, and its presence extends the map a lot, so it is commonly deliberately left out of statistics maps. You can tell the ST to add it back, I guess, for all the good it'll do :P{{User:Kenny2scratch/sig}} 07:39, 1 September 2019 (UTC)

== October 2019 EW Election ==

=== Overview ===

On behalf of all the Scratch Wiki admins and EWs, I am happy to announce that '''the seventh Experienced Wikian elections will be held in this month of October, 2019.'''

You can find the most relevant information on the election page: [[Scratch Wiki:Elections/October 2019]] and the [[Scratch Wiki:Elections/October 2019/Nominations|nomination page]]. Visit this page to learn more about being an Experienced Wikian: [[Scratch Wiki:Experienced Wikians]]

=== Rationale ===

This election is for mostly the same reason as the February 2018 elections. I (kenny2scratch) have now started 11{{th}} grade, and the level of stress is really high - this is the year where the vast majority of learning goes on. I'm not withdrawing or retiring from the Wiki like jvvg has, but I will definitely have to be far less active.

Now, the EWs elected in June have done their job very well - but I'm sure they'd love some help. Also, in the last election there was an experience imbalance - the candidates joined the Wiki in 2015, 2017, and 2018; additionally, at the time other nominees couldn't become candidates because of lack of experience. After three months, we feel confident that nominees will have more experience.

=== Expectations/Hopes ===

EWs elected in this election should be able to dedicate a set amount of time each day to patrolling edits made that day. Though all edits from each day must be patrolled, the elects need not patrol them all by themselves. Instead, they should coordinate with myself and other admins and EWs to patrol the day's edits.

Elects should also:

* Know the account request process well (processing account requests is what the entire EW role was created for)

* Have a certain amount of activity per day outside of patrolling. Edits made in the course of patrolling are usually enough.

* Know how to gently/nicely/politely correct new users' behavior

** No: "Please remember to indent. You did not indent on User's talk page."

** Yes: "Hi, I just saw your message on User's talk page. Your comment was rather [positive adjective], but I just want to mention that when replying to other people's posts we usually..."

=== Conclusion ===

Nominations open at 12:00 AM UTC on October 5 (which is 8pm Scratch Time on October 4). Good luck, and may the best candidates win!{{User:Kenny2scratch/sig}} 04:29, 1 October 2019 (UTC)

:Another one? It feels like we just did the last! Nevertheless, I'll nominate myself when it's open.<scratchsig>MClovers</scratchsig> 04:38, 1 October 2019 (UTC)

=== Candidates ===

Nominations are closed! After much deliberation by the admins and current EWs, here is the list of candidates (in alphabetical order) in the June 2019 election:

* apple502j

* Jammum

* MClovers

* TenType

Candidates: Start writing your speeches! Once you have written your speech and are happy with what it says, '''post it in a reply here'''. Remember that speeches must be no more than 108 words and not break any rules stated on the [[Scratch Wiki:Elections/October 2019|election page]]. If you like, you can post your speech multiple times - your last reply here that you mark as your official speech will be the speech displayed on the election page. You have until October 19 to write and post and/or revise your speech.

Everyone else: There's nothing for you to do right now - voting starts on October 19. Check back in a week!

(Edit: your speeches will only be displayed on the election page at the start of the voting period.){{User:Kenny2scratch/sig}} 08:48, 13 October 2019 (UTC)

:Hey there! My name's TenType. I have a lot of experience on the Scratch Wiki, such as cleaning up existing articles, helping users around the Wiki, fixing Wiki markup, and much more. Since I'm one of the most active users on the Wiki and moderate every edit that goes into Recent Changes, I believe I would be an excellent fit as an EW for patrolling, handling account requests, and maintaining the Wiki. Lastly, I consider myself to be a hard worker- meaning I would be great for repetitive tasks such as deleting unused/redirecting files. Vote TenType for EW! <scratchsig>TenType</scratchsig> 21:17, 13 October 2019 (UTC)

::Hello, I'm an well-known apple, apple502j. Being an admin for more than years on Japanese wiki, my knowledge on how to moderate Wiki, including ConfirmAccounts, is so huge. I look at Recent Changes almost every day using my free time and I'm sure I'm the best person for patrolling task. I have created many articles here and joined many discussions around the Wiki since two years ago. Also, my timezone is UTC+9; similar to Ken's, so I can help his jobs at the almost same time. Make the Wiki nice like an apple, by Voting Apple. {{User:Apple502j/siggy}} 07:20, 14 October 2019 (UTC)

:::Hello, Wikians! It is a great honour to be a candidate for this EW election. I have been on the Scratch Wiki for nearly a year (at the time of writing this) made over a thousand edits, so I have enough experience. If I get elected, I will do many helpful actions, such as putting lots of effort into helping out and improving this wiki, answer everyone's questions and more. I will carefully read account requests and fix other's spelling and grammar. Finally, I will aim to be on this wiki daily and will only use new privileges for the greater good of the wiki. {{User:Jammum/Signature}} 14:59, 14 October 2019 (UTC)

::::Hi fellow wikians! I'm @MClovers but you can call me Alpha. I'm so happy that I was considered as a candidate for the election! I just want to thank the current EW's and admins for choosing me as a candidate, It means a lot to me! Anyways, let's get onto my speech. I've been on the Scratch wiki for over 2 years now and I've enjoyed every second of it! I believe that the wiki is not just a place to get information but a whole community. Following this belief, I know how to manage online communities. I have a popular community known as 'ShopBux'. I won't get into what it actually is but the core of it is a thriving online community with over 300 pages and around 20 employees. I am a bit of a computer geek as well so I spend a lot of time on my laptop, meaning I am able to be on the wiki on command. Relating to this, my timezone is NZT so you can figure out when I'll be able to get on. I have the ability to correct users politely as I believe that new wikians may be put off if an EW came to them and attacked them. I can easily learn things so this will mean me learning every single nook and cranny of being an EW. Relating to this, I love learning new things so I will enjoy this position. My activity on this wiki will skyrocket as I understand the dedication required to be an EW. I will also try to reccomend the ideas of users to the other EWs and admins. Remember to #VoteAlpha if you want a say in how this online community is run!<scratchsig>MClovers</scratchsig> 03:49, 16 October 2019 (UTC)

:::::@MClovers, two problems with your speech:

:::::# Your username is MClovers, not AlphaZetta. "#VoteAlpha" doesn't really make sense in this context.

:::::# The word limit for speeches is 108 words. Your speech is 290 - over twice the limit.

:::::In any case, thank you all for your speeches - you now have until this Saturday to revise them. The last reply of yours here that you mark as your official speech will be used on the election page.{{User:Kenny2scratch/sig}} 04:59, 16 October 2019 (UTC)

== Show Preview Loading ==

Is it just me, or is "Show preview" loading slower and slower as time progresses? At first, since I was using a phone to edit, I thought it was just the side effect of editing on mobile. However, I tried using "Show preview" on my two other laptops and the same happened- I clicked "Show preview", then the gray loading circle would pop up. It takes a VERY long time to load and sometimes won't even load at all. If you click on it again, the circle would disappear and the preview would still not be shown. "Save changes" and "Show changes" works just fine. Is anyone else experiencing this and if someone else is, then could this be fixed?

:::::: Sorry so much for how the message was delivered, I was half asleep. I believe I was refering to the little rage icon on the front page that brings you to the April Fools pages. {{outdent|7}} Maybe this button could be moved somewhere? <scratchsig>TenType</scratchsig> 02:57, 5 November 2019 (UTC)

:First off, does it actually bother anyone that much? I don't notice it at all - it's a white image on a light background.

:Second, if you were to look at the full-sized image you would see that the icon actually says "APRIL FOOOOOOOOOOOOOLS DAYYY" rather than what you think.

:Third, I partially meant that icon as a way of introducing the idea of April Fools' pages to people who actually notice it - a fun thing to find out, like "hey the Wiki does April Fools too".

:Fourth, the other purpose of the icon is its main one - a convenient link to the April Fools' version of the page. It's much harder to type "Scratch Wiki:April Fools/Scratch Wiki Home" into the address bar than it is to click "Scratch Wiki Home" then the rage icon.

:I like it where it is; I guess I'm not strongly opposed to moving it somewhere else on the main page, but it serves its purpose best in its current state.{{User:Kenny2scratch/sig}} 01:46, 13 November 2019 (UTC)

== Suggestion for a new Scratch block: StringBuilder‎‎ ==

{{done}}<br><big>Hello fellow Scratch Wiki users,</big>

I’ve been using Scratch over the past couple of years and I noticed something quite frustrating: Text.

It is really hard to portray graphical text in scratch that can easily be modified(ex. a sprite that dynamically changes it’s text based on the user input.)

Right now, there are only a few, limited choices with drawbacks:

1) <u>Using the say block</u>

Using the say block will trigger the particular sprite to mention user-specified text(ex. Hello!). This method is simple, and easily able to dynamically change, but it comes with a few drawbacks. It is really hard in itself to customize the text, in ways like changing the size, color, and font. Furthermore, the text will always appear in a text bubble above the existing sprite, hindering it’s usability in many programs.

2) <u> Preparing code to make dynamic text </u>

In addition, people using scratch can develop their own typography to display dynamically. The procedure can be done by making the 26 costumes in an “Alphabet” sprite either by hand or using the existing typography. After the process, a “cloning” function can be made to generate the desired text. This is the other alternative to using speech bubbles, and it appears in various other types of  games. Unfortunately, it is really hard customizing features like size and font, because every other costume will be needed to be changed into the desired style. Moreover, getting the word function to actually work can

also be a problem.

<u><big> A hybrid of some sorts should be made, to further enhance the efficiency of the Scratch language we have come to know and love!</big></u>

<u><big>StringBuilder!</big></u>

My proposed idea, StringBuilder, can be a hybrid between the two options, having the ease of dynamically changing and generating the text itself with having it being it’s own sprite!

To elaborate, StringBuilder should be a special type of sprite put into the “Add Sprite” button, so that users can get it themselves. It should also come with it’s own blocks and settings.

<scratchblocks>

when green flag clicked

set StringBuilder text to [Hello World]

set StringBuilder height = [100]

set StringBuilder font to [Arial v]

set StringBuilder language to [English v]

set StringBuilder color to Red: [0] Green: [0] Blue: [0]

add[hello] to [StringBuilder 1 v] starting at index (1)

remove String at index (1) for [StringBuilder 1 v]

wrap text when <>

</scratchblocks>

I know these blocks aren’t perfect, so I am open to new suggestions!

I recently reverted 2 edits that a New Wikian made. They were presumably test edits, but I think they could be mistaken for vandalising. :::::Our article is 5th in rank in Google search results for "scratch privacy policy" (at least in my region), so I think if any redirecting happens it should be to the current title.

:::::The ideal solution is to add our own content regarding the privacy policy. Could we explain each clause of the policy rather than (or in addition to) directly quoting it? Maybe give examples, or make the meaning clearer? I'm loath to delete an article that should have good use but just doesn't at the moment.

:::::Side note: if you already posted on its talk page, and nobody responded, I think it's fair to get more attention on the issue by bringing it up here. You (Groko13) did the right thing here.

To clarify, I linked to the German privacy policy because that is privacy policy for all wikis. It's legally dangerous to translate the privacy policy (as discussed in another topic somewhere, I think) so all wikis just link to it directly. What exactly does it mean when you protect a page?  I know that you use the <nowiki>{{Protect}}</nowiki> template and then (if fitting), the page is "locked" (protected).  My question is who can edit it after that? Does it mean that it's only editable by the page creator (owner, if on a userspace) and EW+?  Or nobody can edit it?  Thanks.<scratchsig>54329</scratchsig> 05:17, 18 November 2019 (UTC)

:Marking a page with {{t|protect}} tells admins that the page needs to be protected. To protect a page means to "lock" a page from being edited/moved by normal users based of of their rank. There are 4 levels of protection; one of them includes, EWplus, which only lets EWs, admins, or bureaucrats edit/move the page. Another includes "Autoconfirmed", which only lets an autoconfirmed user or any rank higher than it can edit/move the page, etc. (there are no exceptions to the creator) You can look at [[Help:Protected pages]] for more info. <scratchsig>TenType</scratchsig> 05:37, 18 November 2019 (UTC)

== Template Preview ==

== Moving Plural page titles to singular ==
 +
{{not done}}
 +
On the wiki, there are many page titles like "Blocks" and "Numbers". This makes it confusing to users and editors, as well as links. "<nowiki>[[Block]]s</nowiki> makes a link to singular that appears plural, but there is no equivalent for singular-appearing plural-leading links.

In the Visual Editor (or maybe in the source editor as well) Wikipedia is able to preview the templates we selected and a preview of the docs of the templates. I constantly get the templates' names wrong (and its syntax) which messes up the looks of the template. I always then have to look for the correct template which takes a lot of time. Having this plugin would help me get the correct template faster, and more efficiently. <br/>{{User:12944qwerty/Templates/Sig}} 23:06, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
+
This is a big change in the Wiki, so further discussion will be needed to manage the moves.{{User:CrazyBoy826/sig}} 00:07, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
:There's a simpler solution: Preview the page before saving it! That'll show you what the template use will look like, as well as what the rest of the page will look like.
+
:Could we start a Scratch Wiki Project? I  definitely think we should keep the pages consistently singular. <scratchsig>Groko13</scratchsig> 02:05, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
:If you know the template name, go to the template documentation to learn the syntax. If you don't remember the name, go to [[:Category:Templates]] and look for it there. If you keep forgetting template names, start learning them.
+
:: Singular page titles would seem strange, since the plural describes a general thing, there is not only one. Also, I fixed a spelling mistake. {{unsigned|Congyingzhou}}

+
:::Many page titles cannot be made into plural form. Having both plural and singular forms is confusing and creates other problems. Singular page titles are also easier to work with, as I said in my first post. Also, remember to not change other users' posts without permission.

::Ah, makes sense.<scratchsig>54329</scratchsig> 01:54, 10 December 2019 (UTC)

:::To give more detail, it was actually originally protected at the "autoconfirmed" level by author request in 2014. This level was mostly symbolic - "hey, even though you can edit this, think hard about it before you do" - because all users here are autoconfirmed by virtue of having been confirmed by ConfirmAccounts.

:::Later, at some point in 2018, we added the Wikian protection level. Soon after, we also added AbuseFilter, and added (in March 2018) a filter that prevented New Wikians from editing others' userpages.

:::Even later, in July 2018, I came across that userpage, and changed its protection level from autoconfirmed to Wikian. At the time, I had forgotten about AbuseFilter, and I thought I was helping out by raising the protection level to something actually useful for them; in retrospect it now serves the same purpose as the autoconfirmed protection did before: a warning against editing, even if able.{{User:Kenny2scratch/sig}} 03:11, 10 December 2019 (UTC)

I'm trying to remove a category from a specific page but I don't know how. Could someone please tell me? Thanks!<scratchsig>Nambaseking01</scratchsig> 15:43, 28 December 2019 (UTC)

:what page? if at the bottom of the page you dont see a <code><nowiki>[[Category:blah]]</nowiki></code> then its probably transcluded from a template in which check template documentation to confirm and usually putting the parameter <code>cat=no</code> in the template will remove the auto categorization. {{User:KrIsMa/Sig2}}  16:13, 28 December 2019 (UTC)

::Yes, but there is an FAQ template. You can remove it from the category by adding "|cat=no" to the end of the template (the one that says faq and is surrounded by these: {{}} ) as another parameter. Some templates automatically put pages into a category, but you can disable that for a page by adding cat=no.<scratchsig>Groko13</scratchsig> 14:44, 30 December 2019 (UTC)

On the [[Privacy Policy]] article, there is a horizontal rule that separates the summarized Privacy Policy from the rest of the article. However, placing a blank line before the horizontal rule is apparently [[Scratch Wiki:Style Guide#no-hr-whitespace|bad style]]. To me, it looks weird without the extra space. I couldn't find any rules on when to use horizontal rules on the Scratch Wiki. How/when should they be used in an article (if ever)? Is this an exception to the style guide? == Why no plural redirects? ==

Many of the pages on the wiki already have plural redirects, and they make it a lot more convenient for users to navigate the wiki. :They are really just too small of a difference to really care about. Even when deleting a page, there are a list of default reasons for the summary and one includes plural/grammar redirects. == New User Recommendation Program (Reminder) ==

Hello everyone. It's been awhile since IWB has scanned the wikis for interwikis to add, and now is probably a good time to do that!
Hello everyone! Since I'm seeing a lot of new faces in the community portal, I just wanted to send out a reminder about our [[Scratch_Wiki:New_User_Recommendations|New User Recommendation]] program. If you nominate people through this system, we will evaluate their potential to be a Wikian and invite them to apply on your behalf. This is a great way to help us build an active community for all of us. If you have any questions or suggestions for how we should give this program more attention, please let me know. I look forward to all your comments and recommendations! <scratchsig>Makethebrainhappy</scratchsig> 03:13, 16 January 2020 (UTC)

== Request to Allow Plural and Singular Redirects ==
+
Several issues have already been discovered:
{{done}}

Plural and singular grammar form redirects are not allowed on the Scratch Wiki for being redundant and unnecessary. However, this has led to many navigation problems, and possibly even users not finding content that exists.

For example, let's say that a page named "Block" existed, but had no redirect from "Blocks". When a user searches "blocks", the top search results will be other articles containing the word "blocks". This happens because the search does not recognize "blocks" being a variant of "block". The page Block will not show up, because its title Block does not match the search term Blocks.
+
* Not properly handling empty interwikis, ex <nowiki>en:</nowiki>, see the ja homepage
 +
* test -> tw
 +
* The bot is proposing adding interwikis to other pages when they already have an interwiki for that language
 +
* Help:Namespaces has a flat out wrong interwiki suggestion

This has become an issue even for me navigating the Wiki, as I sometimes need to enter the search term in singular and plural form. Can sommeone please allow these redirects?{{User:CrazyBoy826/sig}} 02:16, 23 January 2020 (UTC)
+
This might take another round or two to remove perviously undiscovered bugs, but with the wikis growing more complex, it's important to get them now. Thank you <scratchsig>ErnieParke</scratchsig> 01:37, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
:No.

:The real problem is that we're inconsistent about plurals in titles. Ideally, all articles should be singular only, because then one can safely search for the singular at all times. However, we currently have a mix of singular (e.g. [[Scratcher]]) and plural (e.g. [[Blocks]]). This is the real problem that needs solving.

:Now, a mass move of plural titles to singular would be a large shift... so if we do end up moving all plural titles to singular then I'd be happy to have those moves leave behind redirects, at least while Google search results are still catching up with the moves. However, new plural redirects are still not OK.

:But also, for your own navigation, just enter the singular and then look through autocomplete, rather than actually submitting the singular as a search term. Typing "Wug" will bring up the autocomplete result "Wugs".{{User:Kenny2scratch/sig}} 07:58, 23 January 2020 (UTC)

::So can we just move all plural pages to singular and have a bot fix all the double redirets and links to redirects?

::This will also make it  easier to make links, as there is a handy tool for making links to singular pages appear plural (<nowiki>[[Block]]s</nowiki>), but no tool to make plural links appear singular.{{User:CrazyBoy826/sig}} 17:54, 26 January 2020 (UTC)

:::Please don't change the topic, but rather start a new one.{{User:Kenny2scratch/sig}} 10:13, 28 January 2020 (UTC)

:Does anyone have an answer to this? (Sorry if i'm being too impatient){{User:Dominic305/signature}} 02:19, 31 January 2020 (UTC)

:::Well, there is a magic word called <code>formatnum</code> (you can find it under Formatting in [[Help:Magic words]]) which adds/removes commas and other things. The <nowiki>{{Special:Editcount/USERNAME}}</nowiki> function outputs the result with commas, so you can try something like this: <pre>{{formatnum:{{Special:Editcount/Dominic305}}|R}}</pre> to remove the commas that break the equation. <scratchsig>TenType</scratchsig> 17:17, 1 February 2020 (UTC)

== Moving Plural page titles to singular ==
+
== Sonic the Hedgehog ==
{{not done}}

On the wiki, there are many page titles like "Blocks" and "Numbers". This makes it confusing to users and editors, as well as links. "<nowiki>[[Block]]s</nowiki> makes a link to singular that appears plural, but there is no equivalent for singular-appearing plural-leading links.

This is a big change in the Wiki, so further discussion will be needed to manage the moves.{{User:CrazyBoy826/sig}} 00:07, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
+
Right now the wiki is saturated with Sonic the Hedgehog stuff, specially the AF pages. Lots of example of stuff are Sonic stuff. The entire wiki feels like an indirect Sonic ad. We should change a lot of this examples. <scratchsig>Scramaso</scratchsig> 11:25, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
:Could we start a Scratch Wiki Project? I  definitely think we should keep the pages consistently singular. <scratchsig>Groko13</scratchsig> 02:05, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
+
:Other than April Fools pages, could you give a few examples? <scratchsig>Ravenclaw900</scratchsig> 13:46, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
:: Singular page titles would seem strange, since the plural describes a general thing, there is not only one. Also, I fixed a spelling mistake. {{unsigned|Congyingzhou}}
+
::Just wiki search Sonic or Hedgehog. Also a lot of examples are by PrincessPandaLover and need to be changed int more generic stuff. <scratchsig>Scramaso</scratchsig> 14:29, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
:::Many page titles cannot be made into plural form. Having both plural and singular forms is confusing and creates other problems. Singular page titles are also easier to work with, as I said in my first post. Also, remember to not change other users' posts without permission.
+
:::If I'm not mistaken, the Sonic stuff is limited to only AF pages. It's fine to gradually phase AF pages away from Sonic content while making other edits to the pages, but don't go mass editing out Sonic stuff. • Sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) after your post.
  • To do various text formatting, follow the following rules, rather than using any other text-editing methods:
    • Make text bold with '''text'''.
    • Make text italics with ''text''.
    • Make text bold and italics with '''''text'''''.
    • Make a link to a page outside of this wiki with [http://www.example.com link text] or {{plain link|1=http://www.example.com|2=link text}} if you don't want the Link icon.png symbol to appear (remember http:// prefix).
    • Make a link to an article on this wiki with [[Page name]] or [[Page name|Link text]].
    • Make a link to a Wikipedia article with [[Wikipedia:Page name]] or [[Wikipedia:Page name|Link text]].
    • Indent a paragraph by putting a colon (:) before it.
    • For more, see the help page on formatting.
  • Put new text under old text.
  • Always remember to be polite and respectful, assume good faith, and be welcoming, while following the Scratch Community Guidelines.
  • When creating a new post, mark it as No Not done by putting {{not done}} at the top. Once the conversation has been resolved, replace it with {{done}} (producing Yes Done).

Articles to update for 3.0

No Won't be done for a long time

Hello everyone, it's already January 2nd for me, so I figure I might as well get the preparations started.

Observations/Edit Guidance

Pages outdated upon 3.0 release are incredibly numerous. In most cases, one or more of the following edits can or should happen:

  • Parts that talk about 3.0 features in future tense (e.g. "there will be a new paint editor") should be changed to use present tense (e.g. "there is a new paint editor") or past tense (e.g. "a new paint editor was introduced")
  • Parts that talk about 3.0 changes in future tense (e.g. "the editor will be moved to the right side") should be changed to use past tense (e.g. "the editor was moved to the right side")
  • Parts that mention dates in any tense should have their tense updated (e.g. "the official release will be January 2019" -> "the official release was January 2019")
  • Parts that talk about 2.0 features in any tense (e.g. "the paint editor has these features") should be changed to use past tense (e.g. "the paint editor had these features")
  • Parts that talk about 2.0 changes in any tense (e.g. "the editor was moved to the left") should all be changed to past tense if they haven't already.
  • Take this opportunity to update things that weren't changed from 1.4 days as well.

Progress

Here is a list of articles that need to be updated (on their real versions in mainspace) upon the release of 3.0. You can probably already start updating them now. Articles marked with an asterisk (*) have updates available at Scratch Wiki:3.0 Articles/the article title, but:

Note Warning: do not copy articles directly from their 3.0 versions!

Though in most cases the information will be correctly updated, make sure to use your own judgement as to its accuracy.

Note Note: Some of the articles listed below need to be created.

Feel free to update this list yourself. Add any articles that you discover that need updates; remove articles that have been updated.

  • Blocks
  • File:Name bar.png
  • File:Offline Editor Share Icon.png

Remember to take this opportunity to clean up articles as well as update them!

Fix typography or other writing issues as you come across them

We don't want to have to make a second sweep to clean up all the weird grammar from tense changes. Remember to fix the grammar and spelling of the articles as a whole while you update them.

Ask for help when you need it

If a page or redirect needs to be deleted or you need some other admin action, leave a message at Scratch Wiki talk:Community Portal/Admin Requests. If you don't specifically need admin actions, you can ask anyone you think would know the answer to your question.

Here's to a good 3.0 release!

Nothing has changed between 2.0 to 3.0 in Front Page, Messages, Discuss, Profiles. (Maybe more but these are all I've been to). The Project page and project editor are the only ones that have.

The front page has changed, they've just been using the 3.0 skin for a while. Notice how the top bar is bright blue there and on project pages but a darker blue in discuss and the profiles as well as studios. Messages have also been at the 3.0 skin for a while. My stuff (and everything in it, like trash) has not been updated either.

List of deleted pages

No Not done

(Brought up here after discussion here.)

So, there are currently four lists of deleted pages on this wiki:

  • Mathfreak231's, which is the most comprehensive but is no longer updated in his absence
  • Mine, which is a duplicate of Mathfreak's but hopefully more organized
  • Jammum's Deleted Pages, which are more recent than either of the above
  • Jammum's All Deleted Pages, which seems to be more recent and extensive but has the least information (it's only a list of titles)

I suggest (from jakel181's idea) that these become a single page in projectspace, something like "Scratch Wiki:Deleted Pages". This could be a Scratch Wiki Project.

Advantages
  • More organized
  • One place for all
  • Can be updated by anyone
Disadvantages
None I can think of off the top of my head

Thoughts? Shall we do it?

“Secret” Compliments

We all know Compliment Tuesday. To suggest compliments we have the S:CT page. It’s a great way to compliment people, but could be even better.

Right now you suggest a compliment, everyone who wants to including the person who was complimented can see it and get posted on CP.

So I thought that’s good but you do let look forward to the CP post because you know if you have been complimented.

I propose proposing compliments on a way no-one else can see apart from the organizer(s). This can be achieved by a Google Form.

Proposed new method:

  • Users suggest compliments on Google Form entering all details as they would before
  • End of the month (organizer)s have admin access to the form and gather responses
  • Posted in CP

This way:

  • Users will look forward to see compliments received and not seeing anytime of the month
  • People will be more encouraged by the compliments

Ideas?
Logoasqwde.png asqwde talk | contribs 07:28, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

There are pros and cons to this... on one hand, people will be less self-conscious about complimenting if nobody knows it's them, but on the other hand some compliments either don't make sense if you don't know who it is or imply on their own who the person complimenting is. I do like the idea of looking forward to compliments rather than seeing them immediately, but the con to that is people might be disappointed if CT doesn't come out at the end of the month due to not enough people complimenting...
Kenny2scratch logo.jpg kenny2scratch  Talk  Contribs  Directory
07:39, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
I'm on board with this. I still would like to keep the non-secret compliments as a second option if we go about this. The main problem would be moderation. With anonymity, there is more of a chance that something mean would come out of it. An unwritten policy of CT is, if I see a disrespectful "compliment" it won't be included. If we were to use a google forum, we would have to have some way of knowing who compliment who, we can't just ask for a username since we can't verify it wasn't an impostor. Any ideas how to go about this?
Jakel181 (talk | contribs) 11:48, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── But also,Scratch and Scratch Wiki are growing up with "Imagine, Program, Share".Here's an rejected example suggestion:

Private Messaging

When communication is public, people are more likely to be respectful because they know that everyone can see it. However, when posting PMs, people know that only the intended recipient can see it, so do not think as much before posting. Even if a "Flag PM" function is implemented, the Scratch Team currently does not have the resources to moderate it, because of the reason said before there would be a lot of inappropriate/disrespectful messages.

– Scratch Team

Also,we can see other's compliments(Google Forms give this in finish of the form,right?).

Shortly:

  • It's a bad idea because...
  • It means a lot of disrespectful or other bad messages
  • I have some questions about Google Forms security
  • Also, we'll need a lot code(if we'll use the Wiki for this)
  • And,we and Scratch Team have some notes about private messaging
  • If we'll try to check all of messages,it'll mean more time and more work
  • Anonymous and fake users have a big problem(in Google Forms)

Ahmetlii (talk | contribs) 20:59, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

I would generally discourage the use of google forms for this kind of project given that you are seeking input from the entire community.
Makethebrainhappy (talk | contribs) 00:33, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
I also disagree with using Google Forms because fake or anonymous users could abuse the feature. However, maybe Special:ComplimentTuesday could be the way to go...
TenType (talk | contribs) 02:53, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
Google Forms are out by multiple Community and Wiki G/guidelines. A special page is the way to go. @Ahmetlii: If we're using a special page, problems solved include:
  • It means a lot of disrespectful or other bad messages
Compliments would be reviewed before being shown. Inappropriate messages are vandalism and would be treated as such. Yes Solved
  • I have some questions about Google Forms security
No Google Forms. Yes Solved
  • Also, we'll need a lot code(if we'll use the Wiki for this)
Not a problem for me, it'll be fun! :) Yes Solved
  • And,we and Scratch Team have some notes about private messaging
Compliments are shown to everyone - only who submitted the compliment is hidden. Not private messaging. Yes Solved
  • If we'll try to check all of messages,it'll mean more time and more work
Not very much more, and @jakel181 has been doing a great job on CT so far, I'm sure he wouldn't mind looking through the compliments before he posts them.
  • Anonymous and fake users have a big problem(in Google Forms)
Not with a special page! Yes Solved
I think a special page is definitely the way to go. I believe the following are the only questions to really consider:
  • Do we actually want compliments to be hidden from everyone (except the organizer and the submitter) until they are posted?
    • If so, who do we want to review the compliments so that nothing is inappropriate?
  • Do we actually want to allow anonymous compliments? (Note: This and the previous question are two separate questions - the answer to one does not imply any answer to the other.)
    • If we do want to allow anonymous compliments, we will have to still also allow onymous compliments - people can just include their names in their compliments.
This concludes my post.

    • If so, who do we want to review the compliments so that nothing is inappropriate? -It's named as "be shy" :)
  • Do we actually want to allow anonymous compliments? (Note: This and the previous question are two separate questions - the answer to one does not imply any answer to the other.)

-No, we don't because S:JOIN-if somebody want to send a message, they must join and login to the Wiki.

Welcome templates

Yes Done

A lot of people have their own "welcome" templates that they post on new users' talk pages. This is a great idea, because new users can get to know new people and, of course, feel welcomed. However, the welcoming effect starts diminishing when things like this happen:

That's a lot of welcomes.PNG

10 different people jumping on the new user is too much - it's not welcoming, it's downright scary! How would you feel if you created an account somewhere and you were confronted with a wall of "welcome"s?

To counteract this, I don't propose forbidding welcomes entirely; what I instead think should be the case is that we have a limit on how many welcome messages can be on a talk page - probably around 4-5 at the most. That does mean it turns into a race as to who can get their message on first, but that can't be helped - if you want to get your message in, ya gotta be active at the right time.

I don't think there's much room for debate on the necessity of the limit, but what can be bargained is the limit itself - how many topics do you think is too many?
Kenny2scratch logo.jpg kenny2scratch  Talk  Contribs  Directory
07:59, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

I think that a limit of 4-5 is a great idea :) I still remember when I started the messages really confused me. Also, I'd say that if you post a welcome message, it should have a variation of the simple title "Welcome!". I tried to make mine a bit different. I like the "All aboard!" one. Maybe we could say if there are more than eight messages already, really don't put one, but if there are 4-5 try not to put your template, but a personal message is okay.

I see this level of enthusiasm as very exciting. While it may be a little intimidating, I look at it more as a great way to integrate yourself with the community immediately and meeting many of the people who you will be working with side-by-side. Nonetheless, I would love to see more data on this and interview some people on their experiences regarding this to see if it does have a negative impact.

I was just scrolling through the CP, and this caught my eye. Great idea, I definitely think this needs to be considered. I understand that people are just trying to be kind by sending the welcome messages, but it would almost be like a horror film for the person who owns the account. I think 4-5 welcome templates are enough, but I think there needs to be a break between even those. Getting 4-5 welcomes in a couple of seconds is also not the best of ideas.
Nambaseking01 (talk | contribs) 17:55, 14 November 2019 (UTC)
We should ask new users for their opinion on this right after they get the welcomes.
TenType (talk | contribs) 00:06, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
I think 4-5 is a good limit. I personally liked getting welcomes, but I only got 3 of them.
Groko13 (talk | contribs) 14:49, 30 December 2019 (UTC)
I'm a fairly new user, and I got 4 welcomes. It seemed fine for me, so I agree that 4-5 sounds like a good limit.

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────How about one or two users post a template, or we just use the automatic one at the top, and then people below can put encouraging words (not large templates) followed by a sig? This would not be too much for the user, but still shows lots of people are there to support them!

Maybe we can create a welcome template, and a bot automatically adds it for every new user. Any user edit it (just like an article). Maybe there could be in it for all the users that contributed.
VFDan.png VFDan  Talk  Contribs  On Scratch  19:21, 27 March 2020 (UTC)
Please fix your signature!
No, the point of each user having their own welcome template is for them to be specific to the user welcoming - a different message for each one. If they just wanted to add their name to a stock welcome they could reply to the {{welcome}} message added by default. However, 10 users posting personalized welcomes is a lot of different welcomes to read - which is why it needs limiting.
Seems like 4-5 is the limit we've agreed on; for the sake of looseness, the limit is now 5 welcome messages at most on any new user's talk page (not including the {{welcome}} message; does not apply to users created before this decision).
@Nambaseking01: Limiting the rate of welcomes is a separate topic that should be proposed separately.

Block Problems

No Not done, as blocks are still unfinished or broken
Today I started to finish up the script for How to Evaluate an Expression, and things got out of hand. When I first completed it, I realized I did some of the block loops wrong, and it like wrapped around some things that I didn't want to wrap around, while I also couldn't get this one if then else block to wrap around something else — it was all a mess. I cleaned some of it up, but I am afraid I'll make it worse and I already spent more than an hour on it. Also, I have to save it each time I want to check if it is correct, since for some reason the blocks won't load up in Show preview mode (it appears in code) but loads when the changes are saved. Can somebody please fix up the script to match the one in post #19 in this forum topic?

What would you use this for, and why? The wiki is a collaboration and we all own a part of it. No one owns a article unless they created it on there userspace where they can so whatever they want with it.
AjsyaSmallpfp.png ajsya  Profile | Talk | Contribs  01:13, 10 September 2019 (UTC)
Templates are mainly created for mainspace Wiki articles — when and why would this be needed?

It would be used on userspaces, giving credit for a image, and giving credit for an example.

Yeah, I don't think this is necessary. If you need to credit someone you don't need a template. Furthermore, you wouldn't need to credit anyone on mainspace, this is collaborative and we don't get/need credit for what we write here.

Not necessarily, we use the 2.0 version for historical references. So, we should have to images for this. One for 3.0, and one for 2.0.

Scratch Wiki Adventure

No Not done

On Wikipedia, there is an option for new Wikians to complete the Wikipedia Adventure. This teaches them skills and covers all the basics of using Wikipedia. I think it'd be a good idea to create a Scratch Wiki Adventure of our own to teach new Wikians the basics of the Scratch Wiki. This would include editing tips, rules, etiquette, etc. I'm wondering what people's thoughts are on this idea and/or if anyone would like to work with me on creating this.

I hope you're prepared to put in the amount of work involved, because The Wikipedia Adventure is really involved (I've done it once before) and a lot of stuff has to be created for it to work. I like the idea, but I don't know if anyone here has the follow-through to actually focus on a project like this that could take a week or more to make.
If you think you can commit yourself (and furthermore get others to commit themselves) you can make a Scratch Wiki Project of it. Good luck!

TenType (talk | contribs) 06:44, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
Adding on, when I did it, it felt a lot more like a game/activity than a guidebook. It allows the user to actually collaborate, talk to people and create/edit a page all in a sandbox setting. It helped me learn the basics of Wikipedia far more than a guide could (probably because I was really interested in it and getting those shiny badges was nice).

Moving Plural page titles to singular

No Not done On the wiki, there are many page titles like "Blocks" and "Numbers". This makes it confusing to users and editors, as well as links. "[[Block]]s makes a link to singular that appears plural, but there is no equivalent for singular-appearing plural-leading links.

This is a big change in the Wiki, so further discussion will be needed to manage the moves.

Could we start a Scratch Wiki Project? I  definitely think we should keep the pages consistently singular.
Groko13 (talk | contribs) 02:05, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
Singular page titles would seem strange, since the plural describes a general thing, there is not only one. Also, I fixed a spelling mistake.
-unsigned comment by Congyingzhou (talk | contribs)
Many page titles cannot be made into plural form. Having both plural and singular forms is confusing and creates other problems. Singular page titles are also easier to work with, as I said in my first post. Also, remember to not change other users' posts without permission.
Should I put {{move}} on the plural pages?

Next time, don't add {{move}} to all of them; either move them all right away or wait. It makes a bunch of edits in Recent Changes which will all need to be undone when the final decision is decided.
TenType (talk | contribs) 04:02, 4 February 2020 (UTC)

User:InterwikiBot/Proposed_Edits

Several issues have already been discovered:

  • Not properly handling empty interwikis, ex en:, see the ja homepage
  • test -> tw
  • The bot is proposing adding interwikis to other pages when they already have an interwiki for that language
  • Help:Namespaces has a flat out wrong interwiki suggestion

This might take another round or two to remove perviously undiscovered bugs, but with the wikis growing more complex, it's important to get them now. Thank you

Advertising article

We really need to overhaul this article. A lot of it is just advertising the product. For example, do we really need a "Buying" section?
Groko13 (talk | contribs) 23:17, 14 March 2020 (UTC)

Scratch Bit has also a buying section. But the entire page is just an ad.

I've moved the GoPiGo article to the creator's userspace (which has precedent - see the last topic on User talk:DexterInd) and removed the categories & advertisement notes.
Scratch Bit is an official Scratch product and must be documented. It stays.

Sonic the Hedgehog

Right now the wiki is saturated with Sonic the Hedgehog stuff, specially the AF pages. Lots of example of stuff are Sonic stuff. The entire wiki feels like an indirect Sonic ad. We should change a lot of this examples.
Scramaso (talk | contribs) 11:25, 24 March 2020 (UTC)

Other than April Fools pages, could you give a few examples?
Ravenclaw900 (talk | contribs) 13:46, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
Just wiki search Sonic or Hedgehog. Also a lot of examples are by PrincessPandaLover and need to be changed int more generic stuff.
Scramaso (talk | contribs) 14:29, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
If I'm not mistaken, the Sonic stuff is limited to only AF pages. It's fine to gradually phase AF pages away from Sonic content while making other edits to the pages, but don't go mass editing out Sonic stuff. (Do note that I don't really see a problem with a Sonic theme in AF pages lol)

Suggestion: Mention that the Privacy Policy and Disclaimers are in German

Currently, the links under the 'Legal' category do not are not mentioned that they are in German. I suggest that the footer mentions that the content under the Legal category are in German.

Without mentioning that, some people might be confused that they are in German, and not English. They also cannot be translated into English without it being inaccurate.

Why would they be German?
OurPrincess (talk | contribs) 16:35, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
The Wiki servers are located in Germany and therefore follow the rules/regulations of Germany.
Makethebrainhappy (talk | contribs) 00:33, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
Would you be amenable to using the external link marker on them instead? Putting "(German)" on a footer link seems unorthodox...

The servers are German because they are owned by Martin Wollenweber, who lives in Germany.
OurPrincess (talk | contribs) 11:55, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
Maybe the Privacy Policy and the Disclaimers can be individually labelled that they are in German, or is that still 'unorthodox'? They could have 'in German' put in brackets after them.

Updating Translators page

The Scratch Team is no longer actively maintaining the translators page https://en.scratch-wiki.info/wiki/Translators

I'd like to remove the Scratch Team only badge and allow folks from the translation community to update the page. Ideally there would be just one or two people per language that would keep things up to date for their language.

Would there be a different process for translators to join as a wiki editor? Are there different suggestions for having the translators page managed by the community?

Thanks, --Chris

Ok! I'll remove the banner at the top of the page for you. As for the translation community updating the page, we can not allow a different application processes for translators joining the wiki, though they are welcome to follow the current application processes and join the wiki that way. Also if they chose not to join they can always leave a post on the Community Portal in the forums with what should be updated and one of our editors will happily make the change. Please let us know if there is anything else we can do.
