I know someone already brought it up...<br/>

Anyways, Not Done is not getting any attention. I know that Kenny2scratch already added “Things To Do” on the left sidebar, and the TOC of Not Done, yet no one seems to notice it. I think that we should release an announcement to all existing editors about ND, and all incoming users about ND on their welcome page. In fact, I’m going to add that to my welcome right now.<br/>

Suggestion: Scratch Wiki:Featured Image Suggestions
not done

It's as it says on the tin.

As part of this new revival of featured images (and leading on from #An Interval for Featured Images, I propose that we create a page similar in concept to S:WWS, where users leave new section saying which image they think deserve to be featured. This will clean up the CP (just slightly). At around the same time as Wiki Wednesday, the EWs/Bureaucrats review the suggestions and pick three images which will then to onto S:FI. If necessary, we could also edit the current Wiki Wednesday suggestion forum post to incorporate Featured Images too.

::::I think the featured images are too minor to have a dedicated projectspace page. I propose instead to have a miscellaneous "homepage tasks" page (or something like that) where you can suggest news items, featured images, and edits to other things that appear on the homepage. Does that sound better? 19:51, 4 August 2018 (UTC)

@Ken won't a homepage tasks page just get cluttered up? If they had to filter through edits and news items to find featured images, wouldn't it be harder for the admins? Also, having a dedicated project space is better because it's a) more obvious to Wiki Editors what the page is for, and seems less boring and gruelling than "homepage tasks", which sounds like just a big long list of stuff to do. And b) it would be easier for editors to suggest, because having a clearer Featured Image Suggestions would be more obvious to others what has already been suggested and what hasn't, et cetera. And c) having a dedicated page would make it so much easier to implement into the current WW forum post. 08:49, 5 August 2018 (UTC)

:We could have Scratch Wiki:Homepage Tasks and have there be a section for featured images, news things, and any other sections that may be needed. Then it wouldn't be as messy (if there were sections). Then we could make a shortcut called S:FEATUREDIMAGESUGGESTIONS (although that's a pretty long "shortcut") and have it redirect to Scratch Wiki:Homepage Tasks#Featured Image Suggestions. Or we could have Scratch Wiki:Featured Image Suggestions redirect to Scratch Wiki:Homepage Tasks#Featured Image Suggestions. :)<br/> 15:32, 5 August 2018 (UTC)

::If we're talking about shortcuts, how about S:FIS, since S:FI redirects to the featured images? 08:44, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

New page for mall simulators
not done

Should we make a new page for mall simulators? Mall simulators are sort of big with the biggest mall simulator (Palace of Points) having more than 1400 members. Should we create a page for it? <scratchsig>Sti_scratch</scratchsig> 04:55, 21 November 2018 (UTC)

:Maybe not as a whole page, but as a section in Simulation Projects?<br/> 16:11, 22 November 2018 (UTC)

::Mall simulators, let me explain, are studios where people can register and make projects and add them to the studio. These projects are shops, where people (that are registered in a mall simulator the shop is added in) can buy from. Mall simulators invent their own currency, not tradeable for real money, that is used within the mall simulator itself. So, I don't really think it would fit there since it's technically not a project. <scratchsig>Sti_scratch</scratchsig> 08:54, 23 November 2018 (UTC)

Split the Paint Article
Needs doing

I was browsing the wiki and noticed that the Paint editor article (here) is really long and could possibly be split up into three different articles: History of the paint editor, 2.0 Bitmap Paint editor, and 2.0 Vector Paint Editor. <scratchsig>Jakel181</scratchsig> 20:55, 18 September 2018 (UTC)

:It is kinda long, but so is the CP, and do we split this? I realize it's not exactly the same thing, but it's not long enough to truly need splitting. 07:03, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

::in Japanese wiki, we did split it. At that time, "Types of Graphics", "Bitmap Editor", "Vector Editor", "Bitmap and Vector Comparison", "Paint Editor Conversion", "Interaction With Other Programs", "Example Uses", and "Alternatives" section is kept. Others are moved to version subpages, such as Paint Editor (2.0). Guess what will happen next January here, without the change.

::By the way, block workaround page is enough big to split, too, I think. It will be good for performance issues. 08:24, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

:::Currently, Bitmap Editor redirects to Paint Editor#Bitmap Editor. The bitmap editor is a large part of Scratch, so I think it needs its own article. 01:29, 22 December 2018 (UTC)

::::So Vector Editor too? 03:25, 22 December 2018 (UTC)

:::::I merged the previous 'The "Bitmap Editor" Page' topic with this one that I pulled from the archives, as I realize that the original one shouldn't have been archived. If the replies by CrazyBoy826 onwards seem out of context, that's why.

:::::Next question: "Paint Editor" will have to redirect to either Bitmap or Vector Editor (not a disambig page, because there's only two). Which one? 05:19, 22 December 2018 (UTC)

::::::There are some sections that cannot be on the two: Types of Graphics, Bitmap and Vector Comparison, Costume Pane, Basic Options, Interaction With Other Programs, Example Uses, History, and Alternatives. Keep them on Paint Editor. 10:40, 22 December 2018 (UTC)

3.0 updating question
+
So, there are currently four lists of deleted pages on this wiki:
not done
+
* Mathfreak231's, which is the most comprehensive but is no longer updated in his absence
 +
* Mine, which is a duplicate of Mathfreak's but hopefully more organized
 +
* Jammum's Deleted Pages, which are more recent than either of the above
 +
* Jammum's All Deleted Pages, which seems to be more recent and extensive but has the least information (it's only a list of titles)
 +

 +
I suggest (from jakel181's idea) that these become a single page in projectspace, something like "Scratch Wiki:Deleted Pages". This could be a Scratch Wiki Project.
 +

 +
;Advantages
 +
* More organized

“Secret” Compliments
 +

 +
We all know Compliment Tuesday. To suggest compliments we have the S:CT page. It’s a great way to compliment people, but could be even better.
 +

 +
Right now you suggest a compliment, everyone who wants to including the person who was complimented can see it and get posted on CP.
 +

 +
So I thought that’s good but you do let look forward to the CP post because you know if you have been complimented.
 +

 +
I propose proposing compliments on a way no-one else can see apart from the organizer(s). This can be achieved by a Google Form.
 +

 +
Proposed new method:
 +

 +
* Users suggest compliments on Google Form entering all details as they would before
 +

 +
* End of the month (organizer)s have admin access to the form and gather responses
 +

 +
* Posted in CP
 +

 +
This way:
 +

 +
* Users will look forward to see compliments received and not seeing anytime of the month

:There are pros and cons to this... on one hand, people will be less self-conscious about complimenting if nobody knows it's them, but on the other hand some compliments either don't make sense if you don't know who it is or imply on their own who the person complimenting is. I do like the idea of looking forward to compliments rather than seeing them immediately, but the con to that is people might be disappointed if CT doesn't come out at the end of the month due to not enough people complimenting... 07:39, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
 +
::I'm on board with this. I still would like to keep the non-secret compliments as a second option if we go about this. The main problem would be moderation. With anonymity, there is more of a chance that something mean would come out of it. An unwritten policy of CT is, if I see a disrespectful "compliment" it won't be included. If we were to use a google forum, we would have to have some way of knowing who compliment who, we can't just ask for a username since we can't verify it wasn't an impostor. == Welcome templates ==
 +
Limit not yet negotiated
 +

 +
A lot of people have their own "welcome" templates that they post on new users' talk pages. This is a great idea, because new users can get to know new people and, of course, feel welcomed. However, the welcoming effect starts diminishing when things like this happen:
 +

 +

 +

 +
10 different people jumping on the new user is too much - it's not welcoming, it's downright scary! How would you feel if you created an account somewhere and you were confronted with a wall of "welcome"s?

Should we rename the page Getting Started with Scratch to Getting Started with Scratch 2.0 and create a new page called Getting Started with Scratch 3.0? Because some people (Mainly teachers who's curriculum is based around S2) will still use the offline 2.0 editor.<scratchsig>Jakel181</scratchsig> 22:41, 8 January 2019 (UTC)
+
To counteract this, I don't propose forbidding welcomes entirely; what I instead think should be the case is that we have a limit on how many welcome messages can be on a talk page - probably around 4-5 at the most. That does mean it turns into a race as to who can get their message on first, but that can't be helped - if you want to get your message in, ya gotta be active at the right time.

Sometimes, I'll start editing, and notice that the little rainbow wheel shows up, and when it does, the code and wiki markup show in different colors. If you hover over it, it says "Disable CodeMirror (Syntax highlight)". If you click it, everything is shown as plain text and the wheel turns black, and it says "Enable" instead of "Disable". I know what it does and what it's for, but sometimes it doesn't even show up. It's weird and inconsistent, since I was testing it out and it isn't showing up now but it is in a different Community Portal discussion. 15:43, 2 March 2019 (UTC)

::::Be careful: Long comment. Nutshell: too hard to implement

::::This is apple502j, the one who made ScratchBlocks4 extension. I know what you need, and it's nice. I'd wanted to make it possible to install both (2.0 version and 3.0 version) version to MediaWiki, but it was too hard to do so.

::::Old scratchblocks (Old for short) and new scratchblocks (New for short) uses the same global(window.) variable name. If you install Old first and New second, Old's JS variable is gone, and vise versa. I tried to solve the problem by replacing the name of New JS with a simple Python script, but it didn't work well. Without the script, we had to manually change it, which is also too hard. To make ScratchBlocks4 available earlier, I had to cut the feature.

::::Old and New also use the same identifier inside MediaWiki. This was a bit easier than that JS one.

::::While it's possible to beg tjvr, it would still need time. For this reason, I think it's hard to implement. 06:54, 23 March 2019 (UTC)

:::::I support! Now I know it's hard to implement, but it becomes easier if we accept a tradeoff: each article can only have one scratchblocks version. That way there aren't any name conflicts and it'll still work fine. I'll look into it later. 06:08, 30 March 2019 (UTC)

::::::I was thinking that each version of scratchblocks should be stored in a different global variable (new idea made from Apple502j's explanation), but your idea sounds more practical! 02:05, 1 April 2019 (UTC)

I don't think this is a good idea. What benefit will this bring? This change would mean that on AF Day, every mainspace page would be linking to the AF subpage instead of linking to other real pages. Then any normal user would suddenly be taken to some cryptic page titled "Scratch Wiki:April Fools/Ignatious Q. Higgenbotham" and not know what they were looking at. Plus, the April Fools template (which is on every mainspace page with an AF version) shows a header saying "this is a joke, scroll to the bottom for the real article"; the AF template (which is on the AF versions of mainspace pages) does not. Linking to AF versions from mainspace would remove the ability for educators, New Scratchers, and other members of our audience to get some serious help that they just happened to need on AF Day.

Help talk:Welcome/4 is used by new Wikians to test out using talk pages. But, there is also a real discussion on the page named 'Blanking' (although before the actual discussion, there are a few talk page tests).
 +

 +
I suggest that all test discussions should be moved to its own talk page (that is a sub-page of the real talk page), which could be named something like 'Help talk:Welcome/4/Testing'. 07:28, 6 August 2019 (UTC)

::I disagree - besides posting on talk pages, New Wikians should also learn how to get to them. If they have to additionally navigate to a subpage, they might be misimpressioned that they have to do that with all talk pages. At the most maybe indicate at the top of the page that real discussions should go in a subpage. 07:46, 1 September 2019 (UTC)

Wiki Wednesday - Participate!
 +

 +
Hi everyone!
 +

 +
Those who have been following Wiki Wednesday closely might have noticed that we introduced a new section in July, "Participate!". Our goals are to
 +
* increase community engagement with the Wiki Wednesday event
 +
* reduce (the relative amount of) spam on the topic
 +
* show people that they can use the Wiki to answer many questions
 +
* get more people interested in joining the Wiki by inspiring them with interesting questions/ topics that need coverage
 +

 +
In July's participate we asked people to ask questions, try to answer them with the Wiki or otherwise answer if they can. We got some interesting questions:
 +

 +
> Answered by wiki
 +
* Where is the remix tree?
 +
* What is the Wiki?
 +
* What is Wiki Wednesday?
 +
* Who invented Scratch?
 +

 +
> Answered by community
 +
* Troubleshooting on MacBook
 +
* Changing the profile picture on a tablet
 +
* How many studios can someone create?
 +
* How to make a thumbnail (that is not visible once the Green Flag was clicked) for a project
 +

 +
> Unanswered
 +
* When are Scratch Updates launched?
 +
* Branding Tips
 +
* Project ideas
 +
* Wall detection platformer tutorial
 +
* Make a bullet follow a player
 +
* Full game tutorials
 +
* How to draw in Scratch
 +
* What did the ST expect people to do with studios?
 +
* How to get hacked blocks
 +

 +
As you see some of the unanswered questions could have been answered using the Wiki - oh well, they were burried beneath spam I guess...
 +

 +
This month's Participate! is to give us feedback on last month's participate and Wiki Wednesday in general. It would be great if the Wiki Community could participate :) On the Wiki Wednesday post: https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/368257/ post your feedback! You can also make suggestions for future Participat! sections. Or say if you don't think Participate! is useful and try and develop another strategy. Thanks all!

:Hi, nice to know you're engaged in this wiki!

:I noticed that you made a lot of edits for this, which is fine, but it takes more work for admins to patrol them. To avoid this in the future, you can use the show preview button at the bottom.

:I also noticed how you formatted you links. I'm glad that you used the internal link format, but you didn't have to rename it. <code>|NAME]]</code> (that part). As long as you inputted the link where you want to go, and its not named to something else. (for example, cheatsheet, look inside). You also included a '/'. This will bring the link to the subpage of the current page. It will most likely bring you to a non-existent page. Hello everyone,
+
Tinkercad Codeblocks
I’ll get right to the point. Currently, there are three "special case" Wikis, which have domains according to scratch-*.info instead of *.scratch-wiki.info.
+
Tinkercad has a new feature called Codeblocks that looks similar to Scratch. It has hat blocks and variables. I think this could have a page on this wiki.
These cause several problems:
+
<scratchsig>LiamSapp123</scratchsig> 19:47, 27 September 2019 (UTC)
* Links to them in Scratch comments aren’t clickable
+
:Does it have a specific connection to Scratch in particular though? We don't have a page on Blockly, even though it's a similar concept (and even though 3.0 has Blockly code in it). 04:35, 28 September 2019 (UTC)
* People keep asking why those domains are special

* Code linking to those wikis has to be duplicated

On the GitHub issue I linked above, LiFay suggested moving the special cases to normal domains, and having the “special case” domains redirect to the normal ones. I think this is a good idea, but we need more discussion on it first.
+
October 2019 EW Election
Moving it:

* Solves all the problems above

* Makes things consistent

However, it also:

* Needs redirecting

What are your thoughts? Should we move, or no? What else is there to consider? 06:02, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
+
Overview
:The special-domains of those wikis only have historically reasons and so I vote for moving them to the domains with the same structure as all others while additional making them fully accessible under their historic domains. 15:07, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
+
On behalf of all the Scratch Wiki admins and EWs, I am happy to announce that the seventh Experienced Wikian elections will be held in this month of October, 2019.

Changes to Compliment Tuesday?
+
You can find the most relevant information on the election page: Scratch Wiki:Elections/October 2019 and the nomination page. Visit this page to learn more about being an Experienced Wikian: Scratch Wiki:Experienced Wikians
I'm a big fan of motivating things like "Compliment Tuesday" but couldn't it be more effective, if we decrease the times per year say down to 4 or 2? It's more motivating honored and to be honored rarely by manny than often by just a few...   06:26, 3 April 2019 (UTC)

:I'm on board with that, currently we do Compliment Tuesday, every Tuesday, when there is four or more compliments. Though doing it every 6 months seems too far apart, but if we do it once a month, say the first Tuesday of the month, it's often enough that I don't forget, ;) but not too often that it is not that effective. What do you think?<scratchsig>Jakel181</scratchsig> 11:33, 3 April 2019 (UTC)

The bot tweaker has no Im A bot template, It may make confusion.
+
Rationale
 +
This election is for mostly the same reason as the February 2018 elections. I (kenny2scratch) have now started 11th grade, and the level of stress is really high - this is the year where the vast majority of learning goes on. I'm not withdrawing or retiring from the Wiki like jvvg has, but I will definitely have to be far less active.

done
+
Now, the EWs elected in June have done their job very well - but I'm sure they'd love some help. Also, in the last election there was an experience imbalance - the candidates joined the Wiki in 2015, 2017, and 2018; additionally, at the time other nominees couldn't become candidates because of lack of experience. After three months, we feel confident that nominees will have more experience.
If you look o the page https://en.scratch-wiki.info/w/index.php?title=Special:ListUsers&group=bot You see that tweaker is a bot. If you look at User:Tweaker, you don't see the template.
+

<scratchsig>Ideapad-320</scratchsig> 16:14, 16 April 2019 (UTC)
+
Expectations/Hopes
: That template was never used on that bot's page (Plus, the bot was only used to replace WikiMonitor temporarily) (and as a reminder Ideapad, please use proper spelling and grammar on the wiki, this is a "professional" wiki). <scratchsig>Jammum</scratchsig> 05:29, 17 April 2019 (UTC)
+
EWs elected in this election should be able to dedicate a set amount of time each day to patrolling edits made that day. Though all edits from each day must be patrolled, the elects need not patrol them all by themselves. Instead, they should coordinate with myself and other admins and EWs to patrol the day's edits.
::Tweaker was always meant to be temporary, and it never got proper bot rights nor was it ever really a bot. The link to Special:Log on its userpage was meant to show recent things it might have done. It doesn't really deserve the "I'm a bot" template.
+

::@Jammum, your point is clear but harshly made. @Ideapad-320: Thanks for pointing it out, and I hope my reply clarifies things. Do remember that we're a professional<small>(-ish)</small> encyclopedia, and proper spelling and grammar in a talk page help get your meaning across better. :) But if that's too much, as long as you use proper typography in mainspace articles then that's fine (though we may misunderstand you at times). 18:03, 17 April 2019 (UTC)
+
Elects should also:
 +
* Know the account request process well (processing account requests is what the entire EW role was created for)
 +
* Have a certain amount of activity per day outside of patrolling. Edits made in the course of patrolling are usually enough.
 +
* Know how to gently/nicely/politely correct new users' behavior
 +
** No: "Please remember to indent. You did not indent on User's talk page."
 +
** Yes: "Hi, I just saw your message on User's talk page. Your comment was rather [positive adjective], but I just want to mention that when replying to other people's posts we usually..."
 +

 +

Nominations are closed! After much deliberation by the admins and current EWs, here is the list of candidates (in alphabetical order) in the June 2019 election:

* apple502j

* Jammum

* MClovers

* TenType

Candidates: Start writing your speeches! Once you have written your speech and are happy with what it says, post it in a reply here. Remember that speeches must be no more than 108 words and not break any rules stated on the election page. If you like, you can post your speech multiple times - your last reply here that you mark as your official speech will be the speech displayed on the election page. You have until October 19 to write and post and/or revise your speech.
 +

 +
Everyone else: There's nothing for you to do right now - voting starts on October 19. Check back in a week!

:Hey there! My name's TenType. I have a lot of experience on the Scratch Wiki, such as cleaning up existing articles, helping users around the Wiki, fixing Wiki markup, and much more. Since I'm one of the most active users on the Wiki and moderate every edit that goes into Recent Changes, I believe I would be an excellent fit as an EW for patrolling, handling account requests, and maintaining the Wiki. Lastly, I consider myself to be a hard worker- meaning I would be great for repetitive tasks such as deleting unused/redirecting files. In Scratch_Books the link for the book Coding for Beginners Using Scratch is broken. == Show Preview Loading ==
 +

 +
Is it just me, or is "Show preview" loading slower and slower as time progresses? At first, since I was using a phone to edit, I thought it was just the side effect of editing on mobile. However, I tried using "Show preview" on my two other laptops and the same happened- I clicked "Show preview", then the gray loading circle would pop up. It takes a VERY long time to load and sometimes won't even load at all. If you click on it again, the circle would disappear and the preview would still not be shown. "Save changes" and "Show changes" works just fine. Is anyone else experiencing this and if someone else is, then could this be fixed?

How to edit on the Scratch Wiki

We recommend that before you create your question, you read these tips to editing on the Scratch Wiki.

  • Sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) after your post.
  • To do various text formatting, follow the following rules, rather than using any other text-editing methods:
    • Make text bold with text.
    • Make text italics with text.
    • Make text bold and italics with text.
    • Make a link to a page outside of this wiki with link text or if you don't want the Link icon.png symbol to appear (remember http:// prefix).
    • Make a link to an article on this wiki with Page name or Link text.
    • Make a link to a Wikipedia article with Wikipedia:Page name or Link text.
    • Indent a paragraph by putting a colon (:) before it.
    • For more, see the help page on formatting.
  • Put new text under old text.
  • Always remember to be polite and respectful, assume good faith, and be welcoming, while following the Scratch Community Guidelines.
  • When creating a new post, mark it as No Not done by putting not done at the top. Once the conversation has been resolved, replace it with done (producing Yes Done).

Known Bugs is for bugs that are consistently reproducible (actual bugs); this is for faults that occur, sometimes randomly, that are not reproducible or only happen once (glitches).

Articles to update for 3.0

No Won't be done for a long time

Hello everyone, it's already January 2nd for me, so I figure I might as well get the preparations started.

Observations/Edit Guidance

Pages outdated upon 3.0 release are incredibly numerous. In most cases, one or more of the following edits can or should happen:

  • Parts that talk about 3.0 features in future tense (e.g. "there will be a new paint editor") should be changed to use present tense (e.g. "there is a new paint editor") or past tense (e.g. "a new paint editor was introduced")
  • Parts that talk about 3.0 changes in future tense (e.g. "the editor will be moved to the right side") should be changed to use past tense (e.g. "the editor was moved to the right side")
  • Parts that mention dates in any tense should have their tense updated (e.g. "the official release will be January 2019" -> "the official release was January 2019")
  • Parts that talk about 2.0 features in any tense (e.g. "the paint editor has these features") should be changed to use past tense (e.g. "the paint editor had these features")
  • Parts that talk about 2.0 changes in any tense (e.g. "the editor was moved to the left") should all be changed to past tense if they haven't already.
  • Take this opportunity to update things that weren't changed from 1.4 days as well.

Progress

Here is a list of articles that need to be updated (on their real versions in mainspace) upon the release of 3.0. You can probably already start updating them now. Articles marked with an asterisk (*) have updates available at Scratch Wiki:3.0 Articles/the article title, but:

Note Warning: do not copy articles directly from their 3.0 versions!

Though in most cases the information will be correctly updated, make sure to use your own judgement as to its accuracy.

Note Note: Some of the articles listed below need to be created.

Feel free to update this list yourself. Add any articles that you discover that need updates; remove articles that have been updated.

  • Blocks
  • Change () Effect by () (sound block)
  • Development of Scratch 3.0
  • Project
  • File:Name bar.png
  • File:Offline Editor Share Icon.png

Remember to take this opportunity to clean up articles as well as update them!

Fix typography or other writing issues as you come across them

We don't want to have to make a second sweep to clean up all the weird grammar from tense changes. Remember to fix the grammar and spelling of the articles as a whole while you update them.

Ask for help when you need it

If a page or redirect needs to be deleted or you need some other admin action, leave a message at Scratch Wiki talk:Community Portal/Admin Requests. If you don't specifically need admin actions, you can ask anyone you think would know the answer to your question.

Here's to a good 3.0 release!

Should Scratch Wiki:3.0 Articles/Front Page (2.0) be updated? It's so similar to Front Page, that it seems redundant to create a new page.
Jakel181 (talk | contribs) 22:46, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
I noticed that many of the things needed to be changed were the same in 2.0 and 3.0. What should we do?

Please don't externally link to Wiki pages! And please don't use underscores in links.

Nothing has changed between 2.0 to 3.0 in Front Page, Messages, Discuss, Profiles. (Maybe more but these are all I've been to). The Project page and project editor are the only ones that have.
12944qwerty Logo.png 12944qwerty  Talk  Contribs  Scratch  15:01, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
The front page has changed, they've just been using the 3.0 skin for a while. Notice how the top bar is bright blue there and on project pages but a darker blue in discuss and the profiles as well as studios. Messages have also been at the 3.0 skin for a while. My stuff (and everything in it, like trash) has not been updated either.
EIephant_Lover (talk | contribs) 02:36, 5 January 2019 (UTC)
Also I think "Images of stuff in 2.0 should be updated to 3.0." should be included. VFDan.png VFDan  Talk  Contribs  On Scratch  22:03, 28 May 2019 (UTC)

List of deleted pages

No Not done

(Brought up here after discussion here.)

So, there are currently four lists of deleted pages on this wiki:

  • Mathfreak231's, which is the most comprehensive but is no longer updated in his absence
  • Mine, which is a duplicate of Mathfreak's but hopefully more organized
  • Jammum's Deleted Pages, which are more recent than either of the above
  • Jammum's All Deleted Pages, which seems to be more recent and extensive but has the least information (it's only a list of titles)

I suggest (from jakel181's idea) that these become a single page in projectspace, something like "Scratch Wiki:Deleted Pages". This could be a Scratch Wiki Project.

Advantages
  • More organized

Okay, I just created a page called User:TenType/Deleted Files, was scrolling through the Community Portal, and found this discussion. :/
Maybe this page could contain pages only and not files? (I really spent a lot of time and effort onto my deleted files page) Anyways, still waiting for a response on whether or not this project will be started.

“Secret” Compliments

We all know Compliment Tuesday. To suggest compliments we have the S:CT page. It’s a great way to compliment people, but could be even better.

Right now you suggest a compliment, everyone who wants to including the person who was complimented can see it and get posted on CP.

So I thought that’s good but you do let look forward to the CP post because you know if you have been complimented.

I propose proposing compliments on a way no-one else can see apart from the organizer(s). This can be achieved by a Google Form.

Proposed new method:

  • Users suggest compliments on Google Form entering all details as they would before
  • End of the month (organizer)s have admin access to the form and gather responses
  • Posted in CP

This way:

  • Users will look forward to see compliments received and not seeing anytime of the month
  • People will be more encouraged by the compliments

Ideas?
Logoasqwde.png asqwde talk | contribs 07:28, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

There are pros and cons to this... on one hand, people will be less self-conscious about complimenting if nobody knows it's them, but on the other hand some compliments either don't make sense if you don't know who it is or imply on their own who the person complimenting is. I do like the idea of looking forward to compliments rather than seeing them immediately, but the con to that is people might be disappointed if CT doesn't come out at the end of the month due to not enough people complimenting...
Kenny2scratch logo.jpg kenny2scratch  Talk  Contribs  Directory
07:39, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
I'm on board with this. Any ideas how to go about this?
Jakel181 (talk | contribs) 11:48, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── But also,Scratch and Scratch Wiki are growing up with "Imagine, Program, Share".Here's an rejected example suggestion:

Private Messaging

When communication is public, people are more likely to be respectful because they know that everyone can see it. However, when posting PMs, people know that only the intended recipient can see it, so do not think as much before posting. Even if a "Flag PM" function is implemented, the Scratch Team currently does not have the resources to moderate it, because of the reason said before there would be a lot of inappropriate/disrespectful messages.

– Scratch Team

Also,we can see other's compliments(Google Forms give this in finish of the form, right?).

Shortly:

  • It's a bad idea because...
  • It means a lot of disrespectful or other bad messages
  • I have some questions about Google Forms security
  • Also, we'll need a lot code(if we'll use the Wiki for this)
  • And,we and Scratch Team have some notes about private messaging
  • If we'll try to check all of messages,it'll mean more time and more work
  • Anonymous and fake users have a big problem(in Google Forms)

Ahmetlii (talk | contribs) 20:59, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

I would generally discourage the use of google forms for this kind of project given that you are seeking input from the entire community.
Makethebrainhappy (talk | contribs) 00:33, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
I also disagree with using Google Forms because fake or anonymous users could abuse the feature. However, maybe Special:ComplimentTuesday could be the way to go...
TenType (talk | contribs) 02:53, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
Google Forms are out by multiple Community and Wiki G/guidelines. A special page is the way to go. @Ahmetlii: If we're using a special page, problems solved include:
  • It means a lot of disrespectful or other bad messages
Compliments would be reviewed before being shown. Inappropriate messages are vandalism and would be treated as such. Yes Solved
  • I have some questions about Google Forms security
No Google Forms. Yes Solved
  • Also, we'll need a lot code(if we'll use the Wiki for this)
Not a problem for me, it'll be fun! :) Yes Solved
  • And,we and Scratch Team have some notes about private messaging
Compliments are shown to everyone - only who submitted the compliment is hidden. Not private messaging. Yes Solved
  • If we'll try to check all of messages,it'll mean more time and more work
Not very much more, and @jakel181 has been doing a great job on CT so far, I'm sure he wouldn't mind looking through the compliments before he posts them.
  • Anonymous and fake users have a big problem(in Google Forms)
Not with a special page! Yes Solved
I think a special page is definitely the way to go. I believe the following are the only questions to really consider:
  • Do we actually want compliments to be hidden from everyone (except the organizer and the submitter) until they are posted?
    • If so, who do we want to review the compliments so that nothing is inappropriate?
  • Do we actually want to allow anonymous compliments? (Note: This and the previous question are two separate questions - the answer to one does not imply any answer to the other.)
    • If we do want to allow anonymous compliments, we will have to still also allow onymous compliments - people can just include their names in their compliments.
This concludes my post.

  • Do we actually want compliments to be hidden from everyone (except the organizer and the submitter) until they are posted? -Yes, they are. (I don't need it :P)
    • If so, who do we want to review the compliments so that nothing is inappropriate? -It's named as "be shy" :)
  • Do we actually want to allow anonymous compliments? (Note: This and the previous question are two separate questions - the answer to one does not imply any answer to the other.)

-No, we don't because S:JOIN-if somebody want to send a message, they must join and login to the Wiki.

    • If we do want to allow anonymous compliments, we will have to still also allow onymous compliments - people can just include their names in their compliments.

-They can use Scratch profiles to send a message - it's only a Wiki about Scratch.

Welcome templates

No Limit not yet negotiated

A lot of people have their own "welcome" templates that they post on new users' talk pages. This is a great idea, because new users can get to know new people and, of course, feel welcomed. However, the welcoming effect starts diminishing when things like this happen:

That's a lot of welcomes.PNG

10 different people jumping on the new user is too much - it's not welcoming, it's downright scary! How would you feel if you created an account somewhere and you were confronted with a wall of "welcome"s?

To counteract this, I don't propose forbidding welcomes entirely; what I instead think should be the case is that we have a limit on how many welcome messages can be on a talk page - probably around 4-5 at the most. That does mean it turns into a race as to who can get their message on first, but that can't be helped - if you want to get your message in, ya gotta be active at the right time.

I don't think there's much room for debate on the necessity of the limit, but what can be bargained is the limit itself - how many topics do you think is too many?
Kenny2scratch logo.jpg kenny2scratch  Talk  Contribs  Directory
07:59, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

I think that a limit of 4-5 is a great idea :) I still remember when I started the messages really confused me. Also, I'd say that if you post a welcome message, it should have a variation of the simple title "Welcome!". I tried to make mine a bit different. I like the "All aboard!" one. Maybe we could say if there are more than eight messages already, really don't put one, but if there are 4-5 try not to put your template, but a personal message is okay.

I see this level of enthusiasm as very exciting. While it may be a little intimidating, I look at it more as a great way to integrate yourself with the community immediately and meeting many of the people who you will be working with side-by-side. Nonetheless, I would love to see more data on this and interview some people on their experiences regarding this to see if it does have a negative impact.
Makethebrainhappy (talk | contribs) 00:35, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
As we are bargaining for this, I was just wondering what we'll be doing now. Should we be limiting welcomes now? Or do we continue welcoming as much as we can :D?

Block Problems

No Not done, as blocks are still unfinished or broken
Today I started to finish up the script for How to Evaluate an Expression, and things got out of hand. When I first completed it, I realized I did some of the block loops wrong, and it like wrapped around some things that I didn't want to wrap around, while I also couldn't get this one if then else block to wrap around something else — it was all a mess. I cleaned some of it up, but I am afraid I'll make it worse and I already spent more than an hour on it. Also, I have to save it each time I want to check if it is correct, since for some reason the blocks won't load up in Show preview mode (it appears in code) but loads when the changes are saved. Can somebody please fix up the script to match the one in post #19 in this forum topic?

AF Link Proposal

For April Fools pages, could we convert regular links in the page to the April Fools one instead, if possible?

But we shouldn't go on a massive editing spree for this - only change the links if we stumble upon them or add new ones.
TenType (talk | contribs) 16:17, 30 July 2019 (UTC)

I think that depends on the person that creates the page, but I think that April Fools pages aren't that huge of a deal to change every link, even if stumbled upon. Also, most pages don't have an alternate April Fools page to begin with.
Jedibrine Logo.png Jedibrine  Talk  Contribs  Scratch  05:48, 31 July 2019 (UTC)

Smileycreations15 Profile Icon.png smileycreations15 (talk | contribs) 12:04, 31 July 2019 (UTC)
@Jedibrine: Sorry, by "stumbling upon", I meant when we add/modify the contents of an AF page. I don't want too many edits of just converting links.
Also, this will make AF pages more lively and humorous in a way. I myself have been disappointed in the past clicking on a link on an AF page, but found out that it led to a regular article.
And even if there isn't an alternate AF page, so what? We could just add the regular link for now, and then when it gets created, we could change it.
TenType (talk | contribs) 16:03, 31 July 2019 (UTC)
I thought that on April Fools Day, then if you clicked a link, it would lead to the April Fools version of that page if there is one...
EIephant Lover logo.png EIephant_Lover  Talk  Contributions  Subpages
22:28, 31 July 2019 (UTC)
No no, that's not what I meant. What I meant was when you click on a link that's on an AF page, it leads you to the regular page, and my proposal is that we should change those links (once again on AF pages) to lead to the AF version of the link, if possible. Even if this could be rendered useless on April 1st, it still would be more humorous for users who browse AF pages.
TenType (talk | contribs) 00:48, 1 August 2019 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── I don't think this is a good idea.

That's my two cents.

BTW, @TenType, there's a shortcut for th for 1, it's st. There are also nd and rd for convenience.
Kenny2scratch logo.jpg kenny2scratch  Talk  Contribs  Directory
04:17, 1 August 2019 (UTC)

I don't think everyone knows what I'm saying. Only on AF pages should we link to other AF pages; why would we link AF pages from mainspace?
TenType (talk | contribs) 16:04, 1 August 2019 (UTC)
Dude. AF pages get transcluded into mainspace on AF Day. The links remain unchanged upon transclusion.
Kenny2scratch logo.jpg kenny2scratch  Talk  Contribs  Directory
16:09, 1 August 2019 (UTC)
Welp, yes, but this would also benefit users who browse AF pages when it's not AF day.
TenType (talk | contribs) 17:51, 1 August 2019 (UTC)
I don't really know that many people that browse AF pages outside of AF day, and there are ways for people to access AF pages if they really need to. If people want to reach a page on AF day, all they will find are AF pages.
Jedibrine Logo.png Jedibrine  Talk  Contribs  Scratch  04:03, 2 August 2019 (UTC)
I've made a change to the April Fools template (the one that goes on mainspace) so that it shows a little icon in the top right that links to the AF version. That should make things easier for the minority that browses AF pages, which substitutes the only real benefit of this; therefore I shall consider this Yes Done.

Split Help talk:Welcome/4

Help talk:Welcome/4 is used by new Wikians to test out using talk pages. But, there is also a real discussion on the page named 'Blanking' (although before the actual discussion, there are a few talk page tests).

I suggest that all test discussions should be moved to its own talk page (that is a sub-page of the real talk page), which could be named something like 'Help talk:Welcome/4/Testing'.

I disagree - besides posting on talk pages, New Wikians should also learn how to get to them. If they have to additionally navigate to a subpage, they might be misimpressioned that they have to do that with all talk pages. At the most maybe indicate at the top of the page that real discussions should go in a subpage.

Wiki Wednesday - Participate!

Hi everyone!

Those who have been following Wiki Wednesday closely might have noticed that we introduced a new section in July, "Participate!". Our goals are to

  • increase community engagement with the Wiki Wednesday event
  • reduce (the relative amount of) spam on the topic
  • show people that they can use the Wiki to answer many questions
  • get more people interested in joining the Wiki by inspiring them with interesting questions/ topics that need coverage

In July's participate we asked people to ask questions, try to answer them with the Wiki or otherwise answer if they can. We got some interesting questions:

> Answered by wiki

  • Where is the remix tree?
  • What is the Wiki?
  • What is Wiki Wednesday?
  • Who invented Scratch?

> Answered by community

  • Troubleshooting on MacBook
  • Changing the profile picture on a tablet
  • How many studios can someone create?
  • How to make a thumbnail (that is not visible once the Green Flag was clicked) for a project

> Unanswered

  • When are Scratch Updates launched?
  • Branding Tips
  • Project ideas
  • Wall detection platformer tutorial
  • Make a bullet follow a player
  • Full game tutorials
  • How to draw in Scratch
  • What did the ST expect people to do with studios?
  • How to get hacked blocks

As you see some of the unanswered questions could have been answered using the Wiki - oh well, they were burried beneath spam I guess...

Thanks all!

Scratch down

Anyone know why the Scratch website is down? I’m at school, so I can’t check the Twitter posts.

Hmm, I don't know. When I got on at about 1:10, it said down for maintenance, and then I just checked back to get to the Twitter posts and it's back up again, at 1:11. Weird.

Maybe your school banned Scratch since there a games there.

No, it was down, like down for maintenance. Not banned. I wasn't at school anyway.

Maybe this?

It happened when 2.0 was turning into 3.0, but by the date of the post, I don't think the reason was due to that.

Statistics - New Zealand

I think we need to write in this page that New Zealand is cut off massively, and can not really be seen. It's quite noticeable!
God286 (talk | contribs) 06:27, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Actually, this is a common thing done in corporate - New Zealand frequently doesn't constitute a large statistic, and its presence extends the map a lot, so it is commonly deliberately left out of statistics maps. You can tell the ST to add it back, I guess, for all the good it'll do :P
Kenny2scratch logo.jpg kenny2scratch  Talk  Contribs  Directory

It's statistics can hardly be seen, due to the fact you have to hover your mouse on a little dot.

Giving Credit on the Wiki

No Not done I think that we should make a template for credit like this:

Remix notice 3.0.png Credit to Scratch-Coding for this template.

. It would be helpful. We could use the remix button image instead of the one I have.
Scratch-CodingProfilePic.png Scratch-Coding (Talk |Scratch |(374 edits) 00:09, 10 September 2019 (UTC)

When and where will it be used?
Logo of Apple502j.jpg Apple502j Talk/Activities 2,069edit 01:05, 10 September 2019 (UTC)
What would you use this for, and why? The wiki is a collaboration and we all own a part of it. No one owns a article unless they created it on there userspace where they can so whatever they want with it.
AjsyaSmallpfp.png ajsya  Profile | Talk | Contribs  01:13, 10 September 2019 (UTC)
Templates are mainly created for mainspace Wiki articles — when and why would this be needed?
TenType (talk | contribs) 01:58, 10 September 2019 (UTC)
It would be used on userspaces, giving credit for a image, and giving credit for an example.
Scratch-Coding (talk | contribs) 17:44, 10 September 2019 (UTC)
You can use it on your userspace but I don't think it's necessary. Btw: What did you do to your signature? It's broken.
AjsyaSmallpfp.png ajsya  Profile | Talk | Contribs  20:49, 10 September 2019 (UTC)
This wouldn't be that beneficial to the Wiki, especially if it is mostly used on userspace. I still disagree.
TenType (talk | contribs) 04:05, 11 September 2019 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Who would use it?
Congyingzhou (talk | contribs) 13:08, 11 September 2019 (UTC)

Yeah, I don't think this is necessary. If you need to credit someone you don't need a template. Furthermore, you wouldn't need to credit anyone on mainspace, this is collaborative and we don't get/need credit for what we write here.

How to use Scratch to host images?

It says right here that we can host images on scratch.mit.edu, but I don't know how. Could anyone teach me? Thanks!
Congyingzhou (talk | contribs) 13:17, 20 September 2019 (UTC)

You can use images hosted in scratch.mit.edu (project thumbnails, studio thumbnails, user icons, etc.), but you can't upload images there.

For example, your user profile picture on Scratch can be found at this link: (look at the url)

Tinkercad Codeblocks

Tinkercad has a new feature called Codeblocks that looks similar to Scratch. It has hat blocks and variables. I think this could have a page on this wiki.
LiamSapp123 (talk | contribs) 19:47, 27 September 2019 (UTC)

Does it have a specific connection to Scratch in particular though? We don't have a page on Blockly, even though it's a similar concept (and even though 3.0 has Blockly code in it).

October 2019 EW Election

Overview

On behalf of all the Scratch Wiki admins and EWs, I am happy to announce that the seventh Experienced Wikian elections will be held in this month of October, 2019.

You can find the most relevant information on the election page: Scratch Wiki:Elections/October 2019 and the nomination page. Visit this page to learn more about being an Experienced Wikian: Scratch Wiki:Experienced Wikians

Rationale

This election is for mostly the same reason as the February 2018 elections. I (kenny2scratch) have now started 11th grade, and the level of stress is really high - this is the year where the vast majority of learning goes on. I'm not withdrawing or retiring from the Wiki like jvvg has, but I will definitely have to be far less active.

Expectations/Hopes

EWs elected in this election should be able to dedicate a set amount of time each day to patrolling edits made that day. Though all edits from each day must be patrolled, the elects need not patrol them all by themselves. Instead, they should coordinate with myself and other admins and EWs to patrol the day's edits.

Elects should also:

  • Know the account request process well (processing account requests is what the entire EW role was created for)
  • Have a certain amount of activity per day outside of patrolling. Edits made in the course of patrolling are usually enough.
  • Know how to gently/nicely/politely correct new users' behavior
    • No: "Please remember to indent. You did not indent on User's talk page."
    • Yes: "Hi, I just saw your message on User's talk page. Your comment was rather [positive adjective], but I just want to mention that when replying to other people's posts we usually..."

Conclusion

Nominations open at 12:00 AM UTC on October 5 (which is 8pm Scratch Time on October 4). Good luck, and may the best candidates win!

Another one? It feels like we just did the last! Nevertheless, I'll nominate myself when it's open.
MClovers (talk | contribs) 04:38, 1 October 2019 (UTC)
It is unprecedented, to have two elections in such a short time, but the rationale is valid.

Candidates

Nominations are closed! After much deliberation by the admins and current EWs, here is the list of candidates (in alphabetical order) in the June 2019 election:

  • apple502j
  • Jammum
  • MClovers
  • TenType

Candidates: Start writing your speeches! Once you have written your speech and are happy with what it says, post it in a reply here. Remember that speeches must be no more than 108 words and not break any rules stated on the election page. If you like, you can post your speech multiple times - your last reply here that you mark as your official speech will be the speech displayed on the election page. You have until October 19 to write and post and/or revise your speech.

Everyone else: There's nothing for you to do right now - voting starts on October 19. Check back in a week!

(Edit: your speeches will only be displayed on the election page at the start of the voting period.)

Hey there! Vote TenType for EW!

Broken Link

In Scratch_Books the link for the book Coding for Beginners Using Scratch is broken. It apears that the company took down the book's page for a new book release which is updated for 3.0 I can never get the web archives to work for me so I thought I would tell all of you to decide what to do.
AjsyaSmallpfp.png ajsya  Profile | Talk | Contribs  21:08, 1 October 2019 (UTC)

I can't find it with the web archiver; it seems like it wasn't notable enough to document. I would suggest removing the book from the page entirely.
Makethebrainhappy (talk | contribs) 21:19, 1 October 2019 (UTC)
Okay, thanks for your advise. Since the book isn't for sale anymore on their website it's probably the right thing to do.

Does Image Hosting page need change?

In the Image Hosting page it seems that Xomf is still under the 'Pending review' section. According to this forum post by Paddle2See, they've tried to add Xomf but it didn't work. I think that this would make the wiki page out of date. Should I change it?

Show Preview Loading

Is it just me, or is "Show preview" loading slower and slower as time progresses? At first, since I was using a phone to edit, I thought it was just the side effect of editing on mobile. However, I tried using "Show preview" on my two other laptops and the same happened- I clicked "Show preview", then the gray loading circle would pop up. It takes a VERY long time to load and sometimes won't even load at all. If you click on it again, the circle would disappear and the preview would still not be shown. "Save changes" and "Show changes" works just fine. Is anyone else experiencing this and if someone else is, then could this be fixed?

At this very moment, I clicked "Show preview" and it is still loading... and loading... :(
TenType (talk | contribs) 23:45, 3 October 2019 (UTC)

On desktop, works normally for me... loaded as instantly as any other submit function.

Should the EW election nomination talk page be protected from New Wikians?

New Wikians are ineligible from running in EW elections. Should the nominations talk page of it be protected to prevent them from nominating themselves?
