Rage icon.png This is an April Fools' Day version of Sound Effect. Please don't take it seriously. You can find the original here.

This page is about sound effects in Scratch 3.0. For sound effects in Scratch 3.0, see Sound Effect. For sound effects in Scratch 3.0, see Sound Effect.

A sound effect is a way to make a sound play in different ways, sometimes distinguishable by people, but always distinguishable by computers.

During Scratch 2.0, the Scratch Team felt that sound effects were more important than music, so while developing Scratch 3.0, they banished music from the main Scratch program, so it can only get in through a Scratch Extension. At the same time,[when?] they added some blocks that can manipulate sounds in ways known as Sound Effects, which included:

Sound Effect-related blocks

Also sadly, the Scratch Team removed all of the sound effects but "pitch" and "pan left-right" on 31 June 2017. This is sad because many Scratchers adored the excluded Sound Effects from the moment they heard of them.[citation excluded]

List of Sound Effects

The sound effects available to a Scratch program are as follows:

  1. Pitch
  2. Pan Left/Right

Main article: Pitch

Pitch is a solid-ish liquid derived from petroleum, coal, or plants. Some forms of pitch may be called tar, bitumen, asphalt, low, or high.

Currently, pitch is most commonly used to slow sounds down to 1/230,000,000,000 the speed of water, which is so close to solid that such sounds can only be heard by elephants once every ten years. However, pitch is also occasionally used to speed up sounds as high as only bats can hear, to help the bats catch bugs.

Pan Left/Right

Left/Right pans are a type of pan that cooks food in a way that restricts its movement to the directions -90 and 90.

Left/Right pans are used in Scratch to change the x position of sounds, because without them, only sprites can have their x positions changed, which makes sounds jealous.
