How to edit on the Scratch Wiki

We recommend that before you create your question, you read these tips to editing on the Scratch Wiki.

  • Sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) after your post.
  • To do various text formatting, follow the following rules, rather than using any other text-editing methods:
    • Make text bold with text.
    • Make text italics with text.
    • Make text bold and italics with text.
    • Make a link to a page outside of this wiki with link text or if you don't want the Link icon.png symbol to appear (remember http:// prefix).
    • Make a link to an article on this wiki with Page name or Link text.
    • Make a link to a Wikipedia article with Wikipedia:Page name or Link text.
    • Indent a paragraph by putting a colon (:) before it.
    • For more, see the help page on formatting.
  • Put new text under old text.
  • Always remember to be polite and respectful, assume good faith, and be welcoming, while following the Scratch Community Guidelines.
  • When creating a new post, mark it as No Not done by putting not done at the top. Once the conversation has been resolved, replace it with done (producing Yes Done).

Not done

No Not done (this will never been done completely, so don't archive!)

Threads that need "long time and hard work" will not be archived, but moved to Scratch Wiki talk:Community Portal/not done. Actually you can read and continue following threads there:

To make sure that your thread will not be archive put the template No Not done at the top.
Don't forget to replace it with the Yes Done template when the thread is finally finished.

Suggestions to connect with the main website?

No Not done

You all may have noticed that we're relatively detached from the main Scratch website. We're trying to fix that by connecting the Wiki with the main site as much as we can, and we would like your input! Any ideas would be appreciated.

Please post your suggestions here

Awesome! I'll check it out. Thanks, jvvg!

Yep, and please also comment other suggestions if you like :) - LiFaytheGoblin Avatar.png LiFaytheGoblin (Talk) 20:05, 7 January 2016 (UTC)
That's really a great chance for the Scratch-Wiki...I hope all authors contribute with their thoughts and ideas
MartinWollenweber (talk | contribs) 12:40, 8 January 2016 (UTC)
Maybe there could be a link at the op of the page, like "Discuss" and "Explore"--
MegaByteCorporations (talk | contribs) 19:10, 7 June 2016 (UTC)
That's already been suggested, and I don't think we're doing it.

Scratch News

No Not done Do we really have to announce new FPC's and SDS's? Can't people just look at the front page? I think It should be about new and retiring ST members, and stuff that would go in the announcements.
Coke11 (talk | contribs) 13:10, 9 January 2016 (UTC)

I agree. That stuff is kind of obvious, and not very important. Also, it happens a lot, so it doesn't always get updated on time. For example, bjskistad was only curator for 1 or 2 more days when he or she was announced as the curator. Also, I think updates to Scratch should be announced.
Mitopolis (talk | contribs) 15:27, 9 January 2016 (UTC)
Yes
Coke11 (talk | contribs) 18:44, 9 January 2016 (UTC)
I agree, the News panel does need some revamps in what we put there. However, FPC's and (at least) SDS's are notable and fun to know about. Even though they might be on the Scratch front page doesn't mean we can't have it. I can understand though that FPC do get updated very frequently, every week, and might not be too notable.
Tomorrow I might add a bit of info to the news updating guidelines.
Update: I instead updated the News to include a somewhat recent update. That should act as a precedent.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 04:21, 10 January 2016 (UTC)
I agree with ErnieParke. I think that it is fun to know new SDS's and new FPC's, but we should also add new news like as you said new Scratch Team Members.
AghaCool (talk | contribs) 15:03, 10 January 2016 (UTC)
Maybe we could keep SDS news as it doesn't change too often, but maybe remove the FPC news, as users such as "thenextcurator" are becoming quite popular.
Bbciplayer (talk | contribs) 17:29, 27 January 2016 (UTC)
Definitely agreed. FPCs change every week now, so it's going to simply clutter up the news box and make more important announcements disappear more quickly. Maybe you could add an option in the Preferences allowing you to enable and disable FPC and SDS announcements?
Srevilo (talk | contribs) 21:26, 16 April 2016 (UTC)

Should We Move Content on the Computer Science to a New Article?

No Not done I realize now that when I wrote the Computer Science article a while back, I put in a lot about computer hardware, which is realistically a separate field. Do you think I should make a page on Computer Hardware? After all, it relates to Scratch, because you can't run Scratch if you have no hardware!
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 18:33, 18 January 2016 (UTC)

While I guess you're right in it relating to Scratch, it doesn't really relate in the sense of a geared-towards-children's block programming language xD I think that the materials listed in the article are very advanced for the younger, more popular age range in Scratch, and as such, should be more contained. While I completely agree it's great to have it, I think those topics should be less focused on and more together in one place. :) However, your topic covers a very wide range of information, so I do think a seperate article would be appropriate.

Wiki Cleanup

No Not done We haven't started it yet! I was thinking, some pages need to be simplified. Others are too simple. And there are more that need updating. The stubs. Also, a bunch of files need reverting/updating. I bet there is at least some vandalism on at least 1 page. I thought, let's clean up the Wiki! VoxBot might help, because we can ask it questions and they'll get answered. I was thinking call it "Wiki Cleanup." It would look like this:

when gf clicked
forever
if <the current page is a stub?> then
expand this page
end
if <the current page is too complicated?> then
simplify this page
end
if <the current page is too simple?> then
make this page slightly more complex//Notice that I said "complex," not "complicated." We would keep it easy to understand, but make it describe what it is about in more of detail.
end
if <the current page is unhelpful?> then
ask an admin to delete this page
end
if <the current page has been vandalized?> then
un-vandalize this page
end
if <the current page is a file?> then
if <the current file is outdated?> then
update this file
end
if <the current file needs to be reverted?> then
revert this file
end
end
end
Maybe we could do it every 2 months or something?

Mitopolis (talk | contribs) 16:14, 5 January 2016 (UTC)

We're sort of trying to do this all of the time, it just can be forgotten at times though. Thank you for the idea! Maybe it could be something we do regularly, sort of as a collective push. Maybe we could add some incentives?
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 23:01, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
Sorry, I don't know what incentives are. I mainly got the idea from reading about Operation: Cleanups on the TBG article. Should we start it?
Mitopolis (talk | contribs) 16:35, 6 January 2016 (UTC)
This is a response to here and my talk page. Incentives are basically rewards to make people what to edit more. For example, you have to mow my lawn. The incentive is, if you mow my lawn today, I will give you five pieces of hand-made chocolate.
On second thought, I don't think we need a special event to be editing the Wiki. If people have time and want to edit, they will.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 00:01, 10 January 2016 (UTC)
The point is to help us find the problems. This would work because, during Wiki Cleanup, finding things to change could be our main focus.

Should we start this? I really want some more opinions.
Popular GIF.gif Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 20:38, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
A better script would be
when gf clicked
repeat until <all of the pages are good enough to end cleanup for now?>
if <the current page is a stub?> then
expand this page
end
if <the current page is too complicated?> then
simplify this page
end
if <the current page is too simple?> then
make this page slightly more complex//Notice that I said "complex," not "complicated." We would keep it easy to understand, but make it describe what it is about in more of detail.
end
if <the current page is unhelpful?> then
if <I am an admin?> then
delete this page
else
ask an admin to delete this page
end
end
if <the current page has been vandalized?> then
undo the vandalism and notify the user who did it
end
if <the current page is a file?> then
if <the current file is outdated?> then
update this file
end
if <the current file needs to be reverted?> then
revert this file
end
end
next page
end

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────Or even

when gf clicked
repeat until <all of the pages are good enough to end cleanup for now?>
if <the current page is a stub?> then
expand this page
end
if <the current page is too complicated?> then
simplify this page
end
if <the current page is too simple?> then

Spanish Scratch Wiki + The Wiki Times

Hello fellow Wiki Editors, administrators, and Experienced Wikians! You may or may not know about the Spanish Scratch Wiki (which is currently on the Test Wiki) You can find a link to it here. We desperately need other users to help us out with the Spanish Scratch Wiki. If you speak Spanish or even better you are a native spanish speaker, please create an account on the Test Wiki either through here or through here. We would greatly appreciate any help we can get. If you know someone on Scratch that can either speak Spanish or is a native Spanish speaker please refer them to the Spanish Scratch Wiki and ask them if they would like to join and also tell them HOW to join. Any help and support would be greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, let me know! I should be pretty active these next two weeks because I am on spring break!

If you'd like to be a reporter for the Wiki Times, we will be releasing our next newspaper on Friday. If you'd like to join please go here. Scratch On!

The international Scratch Wikis need your help

Scratch-wiki-FAQ logo.png

Every author of the English Scratch Wiki is welcomed to help as an "International Scratch Wiki Coach" even without knowing other languages, because for motivating, coaching and teaching English works very well. It's also interesting for making international contacts and doing good deeds in a globalized world. :-)

We have been quite successful with starting wikis of other languages as you can see here:

But because there is so much work left to do, we urgently need wiki-authors who can help. Some of the international authors are very productive but most of them do not know much about working at a wiki and will loose faith when working there alone. It would be helpful, if everybody of the active international wikians would have a guide to help and motivate him: So feel free to go to their Scratch-User profile and start a conversation like:

You did start editing the <one language> Scratch-Wiki at <http://test.scratch-wiki.info/wiki/Fr:Scratch_Wiki_Accueil> Wouldn't you like to continue? I am an author of the English Scratch Wiki and would like to help you build up your Scratch Wiki by showing you how wiki-things like templates, categories, cp, discussion and so on work at the English wiki, so you can start doing it in your language.

What do you think?"

Also there is lots of organizational work left to be done, see:

At the moment it seems to me that only user:LiFaytheGoblin, user:ErnieParke and I are caring regularly for the international wiki community. We meet in an online hangout called "International Scratch Club" every Monday at 9:00 p.m (German time, I think's that's 15:00 (or 3:00 PM) at the east cost, see de:Scratch-Wiki:Scratch_Club the orange entries there are the English agendas/protocols (blue ones are German)): We would be happy if experienced scratch-wikians would join and help. You can request an account at http://test.scratch-wiki.info/wiki/Special:RequestAccount, only mention you want to help and give a link to your existing wiki-account. We hope many of you will join, or start caring again if they already joined. Thank you in advance!

I'll hopefully get a german wiki account at some point :). That's my only way that I can help
Makethebrainhappy (talk | contribs) 18:53, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

Programmer1121 (talk | contribs) 20:48, 28 April 2016 (UTC)
The main reason why people aren't joining the hangout is because of timezone issues. If it could be moved to a weekend, that would be great :)
KrIsMa Anamation2.gif KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 02:05, 29 April 2016 (UTC)
Hi Martin. I agree with KrIsMa, I haven't been able to attend Scratch Club before because of my timezone. It's rather early in the morning for me. Anyway, I requested an account on the test wiki, I hope I can be of use there ;)
Hamish752 (talk | contribs) 08:27, 29 April 2016 (UTC)
@All: The most important thing is not to join the online-hangout we have, but to help the international wikis ;-) Nevertheless I would be happy to meet you online in our Scratch-Club voice chat (we used skype, google hangout and currently teamspeak) so I suggest to make at least one weekend-date for the first and than see how we could solve the timezone issues. I suggest next Sunday. Does that fit and what time would would be good fore you? (please not middle of the night ;-)
@ErnieParke: Could you also join us?
@Hamish: Creating an account: Great! That's what I hoped some people would do...but I cant't see your account request (http://test.scratch-wiki.info/wiki/Special:RequestAccount) nor do I see your username at the verification project. Until now the account request system, user:jvvg installed for us, worked...Can you please try again?

My google-name ist "mtwoll" you can write me at mtwoll [ät] gmail [dot] com in case of problems.

Programmer1121 (talk | contribs) 17:47, 30 April 2016 (UTC)
The meeting will be on Google Hangouts. You need a Google account for that, after which you can go here ( https://hangouts.google.com ) and call Mtwoll to join.

Next date for Monthly Online Meeting: Sunday 5. June 2016 at 20:00 MET

I think we had a good online meeting yesterday with user:LiFaytheGoblin, user:KrIsMa, user:St19_galla, user:ErnieParke. Thank you all for joining. We decided to have an Online Meeting about the International Scratch Wiki every first Sunday of the week at 8:00pm. So next meeting will take place at Sunday the 5. of June 2016. Comments?
But again: It's not nessecairy to join the online Eeting to help the international scratch wikis and you don't need to know a foreign language to help there with coaching.

WM is back online!

Although my networking issues still persist and I still have to use a proxy to access the Wiki, I was able to run WikiMonitor through a proxy as well and it is back online. Everything should work as it did before, just beware that it is slightly slower than before due to the proxy.

That being said, please do not make edits designed to trip WM. If I need to test anything, I will.

Overuse of Not Done template?

Yes Done

I think that people are overusing the Not Done template to 'pin/feature' their post so almost through every archive everyone will see it, meaning that the archive of the current posts doesn't wipe out all of the conversations. So after time everyone will use the Not Done template and the archive wipe means nothing to us then. If people were to actually change it to Yes Done when they actually had finished their post - I wouldn't be saying this.
Golden-scratch (talk | contribs) 12:51, 30 April 2016 (UTC)

I think we already have a solution for that problem: Every old thread that is "not done" can be removed from the CP by coping it to S:CPND and only put it's Header to #Not done. That solution was created, after multiple times threads that were important but needed a lot of time, have been archived wrongly.

Scratchblocks Extension (Possible) Update

Over the past several of days, I have been working in collaboration with blob8108 (link) to update the Scratch Wiki Scratchblocks plugin. It will bring the plugin up to the same level as the plugin in the Scratch forums, and also add a few new features. As blob8108 said: "Angled booleans, nicer rendering, lots of fixes, better translation support, etc etc..."

Once the plugin is polished and finished, I will test it out on the international Scratch Wikis. If that works, I will check with the ST if it is acceptable to update the English wiki's plugin.

As heads up, I believe this will break a few blocks that switch a block's type. Thankfully, most of those will be in List of Block Workarounds.

Hi dudes! v3.1 of scratchblocks is now released, much joy. ErnieParke has finished up the wiki plugin update too. I suggest you politely ask scmb1 or rschamp or some other appropriate ST member to pull in the new wiki plugin.

@ErnieParke probably a good idea if you put together a quick message saying what they need to do to update it.

Also, you guys should totally update the wiki page with all the new stuff.

Remove t template?

No Not done I personally think this template is workaroundable. For example NotUseful could replace NotUseful. In fact, they're both identical if you look NotUseful comes out as NotUseful and NotUseful comes out as NotUseful.
Banana439monkey.png banana439monkey (Talk | Contribs | Scratch | Edits (2,394)) 07:50, 22 May 2016 (UTC)

Yes, both approaches are almost identical. At the same time, approach #2 is quicker to type. I believe a few Scratchers prefer it too.
Overall, I see no major benefits to either method, so it would be best to leave this to user preference.

Wiki Wednesday for June

Hi everyone! Another successful Wiki Wednesday has rolled around, and it was a success too! To be honest, it's nice to think how WW lets us become more connected to the main website. In fact, since WW started, we seem to get many more account requests here at the Scratch wiki.

It is now time to pick our next Wiki Wednesday article. Suggestions are appreciated! I actually posted this a bit late, so we will be making a decision in two days.

p.s.: Unfortunately, I forgot to collect the page view statistics for April so I can't give any stats on how well April's WW went.

I propose Custom Blocks!
Chibi-Matoran (talk | contribs) 01:32, 24 May 2016 (UTC)
I talked with LiFay, and because of an upcoming Scratch event, we decided it would be best to feature Scratch in the Media for this month. However, that was on the condition that we merge Cartoon Network into the article.
Keep these suggestions in mind for the next WW! They look good. :)

Hey everyone! I didn't put the english article in the forum post last wednesday since it wasn't ready yet. Do you think I should add it now or next month? -

@LiFaytheGoblin Maybe we could use one of the suggestions for this discussion

@everyone: Out of curiosity, since this discussion is for the current WW, would it make more sense to call it May's WW or June's WW?
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 14:01, 28 May 2016 (UTC)
June's should do.

Okay, good to know!
By the way, I contacted LiFay, and she says she will edit the WW thread to include the English WW tomorrow. Thank you LiFay!

Sorry that this is so late, but -Ravindra- is FPC... can someone add her? Thanks :3

Wish List for our international Scratch Wikis

I started to write a wish list for our international scratch wikis. I am happy about everyone who helps to make some of the wishes come true step by step (I know that some of them will take years, but every long way starts with the first step ;-). See Details at the community portal of the Test Wiki:

MartinWollenweber (talk | contribs) 13:16, 28 May 2016 (UTC)

Fun fact

If I'm getting this data right, we have created about 670 accounts and processed about 2000 requests since the account request system was implemented (to get the amount of accounts I just looked at the first account I could find with the welcome message and for the amount of requests, I looked at the latest request id).

This means that we accept about 27% of the account requests here. Any thoughts?
jvvg (talk | contribs) 02:27, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

Wow, that's a small percentage. We should teach our kids how to type a proper request.
PPL Icon.gif ♥PrincessPandaLover Talk | Contributions | Scratch Account 04:15, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
Wow. xD
Banana439monkey.png banana439monkey (Talk | Contribs | Scratch | Edits (2,394)) 08:09, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
Wow.. Do some people make fake requests with random stuff in it, or do they just make really bad (but still serious) requests?
Pianogirl84's Logo.png Pianogirl84 Talk Contributions 12:57, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
If you want to see the particularly bad Wiki account requests we get, check out our Tumblr blog. About half of the requests that we reject end up on that blog, and the other half are ones that don't have egregious flaws but still miss important parts of S:CONTRIB.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 14:19, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
I know, let's teach kids to type, by creating a wiki page on proper wiki account requests, oh wait, WE HAVE ONE!

-unsigned comment by Programmer1121 (talk | contribs)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── The best part is that I always get a few people who submit requests of the quality that go on the Tumblr blog who get a rejection message (the rejection message is "Your Scratch Wiki account request was rejected because you did not read http://wiki.scratch.mit.edu/wiki/S:CONTRIB prior to submitting your request.") and then tell me that they did read the page. I guess they figure that I don't actually check if the followed the instructions on it. Some of these people who protest the rejections are people who say stuff that doesn't even remotely follow the instructions are submitted by people whose accounts don't meet the criteria.

Are they allowed to reapply?
Makethebrainhappy (talk | contribs) 11:29, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
I read that they could I think... But probably if they mature.

I just started cracking up while reading that Tumblr blog... those hashtags are hilarious xD

@Makethebrainhappy: They can reapply after about two weeks. @Pianogirl84: Thanks. I have fun coming up with those. My favorite was when someone said something like "It is my dream to join the Scratch Wiki", and mathfreak231 hashtagged it "#keep dreaming".
jvvg (talk | contribs) 16:50, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
Those hash-tags are funny, but my favorite ones are the ones that are longs but say random things.
Programmer1121 (talk | contribs) 17:52, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
I love the request notes saying "lol" and I like the hashtag note saying "lolbac" xD

New featured images

We haven't updated the featured images in quite some time, so now it's time to pick some new ones. I already picked one, but there are two more spots open for community input. If you have any suggestions, please suggest an image. Around this time tomorrow, we will pick the two we think would be the best suited for the front page.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 01:49, 31 May 2016 (UTC)

What about that gif of the scratch cat running :P. Another suggestion would be the new video feature in action. How about an elaborate art piece by a community member? Those are my suggestions
Makethebrainhappy (talk | contribs) 01:08, 4 June 2016 (UTC)
Unfortunately, due to the lack of responses, I had to pick some myself.

Help page?

Yes Done
Maybe we could create something like Help:Archiving a talk page? What are your thoughts about this?
Banana439monkey.png banana439monkey (Talk | Contribs | Scratch | Edits (2,394)) 08:26, 4 June 2016 (UTC)

Hi, I think its a good idea could create something like that, or we could create something that helps people with creating a userspace, and have that as a section. There is a Userpage Shop run by Metropolis perhaps they would be interested in helping. I think it would be a good idea theres not many people who do archive talk pages it might be good to help out.
What do you think about the Help:Making A Userpage idea? User:Minerman6/Signature
The userspace thing really wouldn't have any steps since you can put what you want in your userspace, but there are two methods on archiving a talk page.
Banana439monkey.png banana439monkey (Talk | Contribs | Scratch | Edits (2,394)) 09:14, 4 June 2016 (UTC)
I understand that you can put what you want in your userspace. I was thinking along the lines of making tables and buttons, like the friend request button, or the leave a message button. The userpage shop has some examples of these. I think that archiving a talk page is a good idea, but I also feel like the ones that i have suggested are also useful. I think that both articles would work well as one article but if you want to make that article, then I would offer any help I can, although I have not actually got any talk page archives myself, if you would like my help then I offer my full support but consider the other sections I have stated.
Minerman6 (talk | contribs) 09:23, 4 June 2016 (UTC)
Should we start to make it then? we could work on it together, and that way it will get done quicker and be more accurate, is that something you would be willing to do?
I made the page actually, but you could help make it better.

Advertising

Hi, I have started a shop on Scratch, and I use the sandbox for writing down upcoming projects and planing what I am going to do on Scratch. In my sandbox I have a list of projects that I am making for the shop, if I was to write a to-do list and upcoming projects here, and link that to the shop would it count as advertising?
Minerman6 (talk | contribs) 16:51, 4 June 2016 (UTC)

As long as all the links are only in your sandbox or your user space that should be fine! :)

A suggestion for the home page

Maybe instead of saying "The Scratch Wiki" in the bottom left corner, it could say "About the Scratch Wiki" or "What is the Scratch Wiki?" since it's really just telling more about the Wiki.. Just an idea :P

Please set your emails

The email system is back up. This means that everyone who doesn't have an email address or hasn't confirmed their address needs to do so. Please go to Special:Preferences and look at the bottom in the "Email" box. Next to "Email confirmation", if it doesn't say "Your email address was confirmed on some date" then please set your email and confirm it. This is necessary in case you forget your password. Even if you don't think you'll forget your password, there's always the chance you will, and it seriously takes thirty seconds to set your email.

No Not done
Why don't we have a template that says "This article would normally break the Scratch Wiki's guidelines. However, an exception has been made for it because" and then the reason? What do you think about this?

@Tymewalk ones that would normally break the wiki guidelines like Kaj or removed pacman project
